i bought my hero last week and ive been playing with it and installing alot of apps and such along with different roms testing the speed and overall battery life. right now im running fresh 1.1 rom and several apps from the market. the thing runs really fast and the battery life is amazing. it went all day yesterday and all last night and just now its at 29%. and this is with moderate use!
i do have a question though, how much free ram is normal for this phone. i see with all of my apps and such i have about 75-85% free when i use task killer. and yes my apps are on the sd!
also what would you guys recommend for a extended battery. i don't want a huge one that will require another back cover. just one that's a higher capacity.
edit: just a FYI, don't install the antivirus app from the market, it is a HUGE battery killer. i know we don't need the app but i wanted to test it out.

first read this. as far as your memory goes istalling and testing all those apps have you cleared out your cache recently? As even though the apps are on the SD they still store the cache on internal.
I'll second nixing the task killer. I was a skeptic at first, but I sacked the task killer and took note over the next two days. Much better WITHOUT the task killer.

Yup. Very happy with speed and reliability. Can't imagine why I ever needed a task killer.
Battery is way better than I expected. I play with my hero all day, browser internet, youtube watch, check email, download apps. The phone still has 20% more battery. And the memory control is good. I used to use taskkiller. But now I don't use it anymore. I don't turn off hero for 3 or 4 days, app runs quickly. But the Android system has to improve. It could be better.
Same here. Battery life is pretty good. Quit using a task killer and the phone is running great. If you have Astro or ES File Explorer installed they have a task manager/killer built in that you can use if you REALLY think you need to kill something.
Battery. There is a thread in the Sprint HTC Hero section on androidforums about a replacement battery that is higher capacity but fits with the stock battery cover. Everybody seems to love it.
It won't let me post a link to it, but you can go to androidforums.com and go to the Sprint HTC Hero section and search for Mugen Battery 1800mAh.

Bro, this is Linux, not windows. An anti-virus would just be a waste of time
my battery life blows. i don't have many apps running either. wake up at 7am and it's dead by around 10pm with not too much use.
GMail in use
GV set to 5m updates
DealDroid set to 15m updates
WeatherBug app in the background (same battery span with TWC or other weather widgets/apps)
Bloo app in background sometimes

my suggestion: make a shortcut with bettercut and sync on demand.
Seriously, my GF and I just got new phones and her EVO rocks my Epic. I don't get it, thought the EVO sucked juice compared to the Epic?
We both have juice defender, otherwise hers is stock with standard sense widgets. She checks facebook and texts all day, plays words with friends but that's it. I'm obsessing, rooted with setcpu conservative 100/1000, I have force uninstalled mediahub+drm services, do the airplane trick on reboot, brightness on auto, services off except wifi when browsing, etc.
My phone lasts maybe 12 hours, hers has gone 27 hours, lasts 18+ easy every day. I feel like if I even touch my phone I lose 10%. Snes games? Phone is done. I basically let it sit and it slowly dies, yet still ends up 90%+ display usage on the battery.
Sigh :-(

What rom are you using? Did you odin to stock? Calibrate your battery?
I'm on supernova:
Froze drm via titanium
Juice defender
Uv kernel
And I'm getting about 15 with moderate use..

I only got 8hours Until I got me, an extended battery Now I have mine on full bright and 4g,wifi,bluetooth,gps on full time. And 4 apps that update every 10 minutes 3 to 4 hours talk time and about 100+ text, get on the internet etc and the battery last about 12 hours
The biggest battery drainage from my phone came from 3g I live in area where 3g fluctuates allot which caused the battery drain
Have you ever thought of getting an extended battery?
Or you dont like the extra bulkiness
Otherwise can't you take it back and switch out for an evo?
I like my Epic like my women, slim and naked ;-)
I'm all stock, odined back to 2.1 before updating. I would suspect 3g due to my near-roaming status at home except for juice defender.
I can't calibrate my battery without clockwork (stock recovery now), think that would make a significant difference?

Watch for SyndicateROM Frozen, paired with the Twilight Zone kernel, in the next 24 hours. ACS team lead rjmjr69 got 30 hours of heavy use on the stock battery at 1.2ghz, and 16 hours extreme use (4G, WiFi, 3G, lots of SMS, MMS, email, web browsing, voice calls).
The benefits of a Lost Carrier...
Hrm, ill keep an eye out. I usually have gone custom rom by now but like the Epic's stock ui, need the customizability of 2.2, and havn't seen a daily use rom that's fully stable yet for it...

That is a key (perhaps not the only) problem. Set your brightness to as low as you can stand it (8% is my number). Use as much black & red as possible (if an app has a night mode, use it.) Use an all black wallpaper. These actions will not cause any miracles but it will make a noticeable difference in battery life.
Worst case scenario (all white background at full brightness), the Epic screen consumes more than three times (yes, >3x) as much power as the EVO. Of course it looks marvelous doing it.
Hrm, thx mosttoys, ill try it. Though honestly most of the time it looks like it's around 0% anyways (which is honestly where I like it).

Little info for you guys. I'm sitting at 15% right now after 11 hours. I didn't touch my phone except for a 45min conference call and half hour workout using 4g+pandora. I realize this is likely average for Epic users. Except check out my GFs super Evo.
Light use, words with friends, texting, browsing (she is unemployed and I work from home so I can vouch that she has been on and off it), 59% afterf 12 hours...
Wtf

Op so ur liking the evo more? Just curious because I am considering giving my epic back to sprint for an evo because this has to be one of the most unreliable phones I have owned.
Sent from my EB13 Samsung Epic
To be honest, the features that made me choose the epic over the evo have let me down. The keyboard misses and the screen sucks too much juice. My gf still hasn't plugged in her evo, its at 42% 15h20m.
But, I just installed the new syndicate rom and have high hopes. I don't want to jump the gun but my keyboard seems fixed and it's very quick. If all proves stable and I get comparable battery life (~15 hours would be fine) ill be more than happy with my epic. I would hate to lose this screen and am used to a hardware keyboard again. Just hate feeling like I need to plug it in every time I use it.
Oh and the call quality is the worst I have ever experienced but I don't know if it's the tinny speaker or sprint...maybe both (came from tmobile).
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
My epic was working good but today was the final breaking point for me. My phone is literally used in life a death situations (I am a paramedic if you couldn't guess by user name lol) and today I was on a call where I had to pull my battery 6 times to get it to dial out.
For me that is a deal breaker. I have learned to live with the keyboard by slowing down. I was debating on giving the rom you are using a try and seeing how that goes.
Sent from my EB13 Samsung Epic
This probably won't apply to you if it's saying the display is 90%, but two other battery drains that you didn't mention are "use wireless networks" for location and google talk, which auto signs in unless you change it in the talk app settings.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Why don't you try switching phones with her for a day or two and see if it's still the case. If you have horrible reception in an area, that can quickly drain the battery. There are so many variables that come into play and the second you two leave each other's sides, there is no way to compare the phones.
Thx for the suggestions. My location settings are off and I signed out of gtalk.
We have been right next to each other as she isn't working and I work from home. However, while she was bragging how much "better" her phone is she mentioned that she keeps gps and wireless on all day. This could have an impact considering the spotty service here, I just thought that juice defender would take care of it (should turn off 3g).
Btw, I had her not charge her phone. She is sitting at 16% 1d2h53m

Running some of the different ROM's will help out anyone looking for better battery. I recommend trying it out i was not very happy at first with the epic after all the hype then I gave in and started rooting and flashing and I love the phone now.
Hi. I'm thinking about flashing my first ROM on the Droid X. I've been using rooted GB for awhile and I'm finally just getting bored and ready to try something different. I really am not looking for much though. My order of prefs are:
Stability > Battery Life > Performance
Mods and tweaks and things of that nature are not really a huge concern for me. I just want everything to work well, and have great battery life. I'd love to hear some suggestions.

i know this is gonna sound funny maybe.
i have a vzw droid-x that i am running the alltel rom on.
i put the phone in airplane mode and enable:
wifi off never
power savings wifi always on
i get at least 24hrs
now the equivalent rom to this would be the vzw 2.2.340
if you do not enable airplane mode and disable everything else i dont see why you would not be able to get the same results.
i get amazing battery life with the rom i said i was using above and dont forget this is with an "always on wifi" never ever disconnects
DSX and Shuji are great candidates for you. DSX is not flashy. It is completely reliable and battery life is stellar. You will not be disappointed. Shuji has great battery life as well and is more customizable. My primary phone always stays on DSX though. Ran 5 straight hours of Netflix and still had 5% left. Not sure too many roms can do that.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I also run DarkSlideX and can verify what is said above. Battery life is excellent. I probably make 20-30 minutes of call a day along with 2-3 dozen texts and 2-4 hours of web, forums, etc. I'm usually off the charger around 6:30am and back on it around 9-10pm with 20-30% battery remaining.
Stability has been awesome as well. I have had one reboot in 2 months, it happened about an hour after flash and that was it. BBCrackman did an excellent job with this.
If you want to try a theme for it, wulf has made some equally as nice themes, too. There are also a few custom sliders and a crt mod, too.
Everything can be found at MyDroidWorld and each has a dedicated thread complete with instructions. Best part is you're already on the pre-rooted 596, so all you should have to do is flash DSX right on top.
EDIT: also, much of the VZW bloat has been removed and it still has some blur present. HDMI support is working, too.

Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA Premium App
I'm not quite sure how to respond to Apex and 18 hours of HEAVY usage. On a stock battery? Up till now I've never questioned someone's post, but this individual seems to have a serious question he'd like some input on. I don't have to be a modder, developer or themer to know no rom gives 18 hours of heavy use unless it's hooked up to a car battery. And even that may be questionable.

What about vanilla rom?
Thanks for the feedback guys. DSX and Shuji were a couple that had jumped out at me in my readings. I think I'll give them a shot!

Ive had a few questions when it comes to my trial with samsung devices and this is where my story starts..
So I have had a mirage of Samsung devices starting with the Note 2, to the Galaxy s4, and now currently the Note 3. I have put as much time and effort as my noob abilities will allow me to and I'm honestly trying to figure out a couple of things. Throughout all these devices in less than one year I have realized that I can only get my battery to supply modest results. I have torn through xda and have done almost every solution out there to in order to increase my battery life. With no impacting results I sit here truly wondering how is it that people can really get more than a day out of these phones. I have honestly never been able to get any of these phones to 5-6 hours screen on time and more than 24 hours off the charger. I evny the people that swear they are heavy users and still get great battery life, but I just dont see how this is possible from my experience...
I would say on a normal day i use the device moderatly and somewhat carefully as to retain the battery life to the fullest. I normally have my phone on WiFi for about half the day but I do browse and do a bit on LTE too. I use all kinds of social apps (twitter, instagram, fb, hangouts for sms, etc) that are all using push notifications. I have a university email that uses exchange and that is push as well. I stream all my music using Google play music daily but also a lot on WiFi. I search the web a lot and use flipboard constantly. I hardly use any games except at home when I know I have my charger. So one of my questions is, does this classify me as a heavy user comparing to all of you people?
I have tried almost everything.. Wake lock detector, turning off absolutely everything location based, app ops, power saver for when I'm at work (8+ hours), turning off all the smart features, low brightness, turning off bloat, etc. But still nothing too spectacular for results. Keep I'm mind I'm all stock and for now I dont really want to change that. So my main question after that long story is, am I missing something? Should I be getting better battery life after all these attempts? Is my battery life ok for how I use my phone? Are there any other options so I can be like the people getting monster battery life?
What made me write this post is because I was at BestBuy and one of the Samsung reps had the same Verizon note 3 that I have. I asked him if I could see his battery stats (which he did not know how to find.. Wow) and his phone had been on for over a day and had 7 hours of screen on time.. It blew me away that he was getting extraordinary battery life and obviously didnt do a thing to try to preserve it.
Keep in mind the battery stats posted are actually some of the best Ive had when it comes to screen on time so usually its dead after about 16 hrs and 3 hrs screen on time.

if your doing graphic intensive stuff on the internet it will destroy your battery. The fact your chrome used almost as much battery as your screen makes me believe there's something wrong there..
My chrome browsing basically just consists of normal web pages and some embedded videos on news and sports sites. Is that enough to cause that much damage?

It shouldn't. But just to be sure, whenever you're done using your phone at times you can go into task manager holding down the home button and click the clear memory button under the RAM tab. That will stop all processes from continuing to run when you're done using them

Yeah I agree that something just doesn't seem right with Chrome using about as much battery as your screen. Try another browser, make sure you clear your recent apps, and turn off anything that you are not going to be using. I turn off all of the touch sounds and haptic feedback, as well as smart stay and air gestures, etc..I never really seemed to get the battery life that I thought I should be getting whenever I was on the Stock ROM.
Maybe chrome is the culprit but I do clear the ram and close apps all the time.. Its just frustrating that I'm trying everything and nothing seems to be changing much..

I personally like Firefox and Opera Mini, it's a matter of personal preference though. There are a bunch of browsers out there. I also use Battery Doctor and Clean Master to clear cache, junk files and applications running in the background. If your rooted you can download "Greenify" which would probably help you as well.

I have the Greenify Donation app, and love it. Stopped using Chrome because it was tearing my battery life down, using the Stock Browser and Boat Browser at times. Greenify also helps with some other apps that just keep running even though I didn't use them during the day. The only thing I have as an exception, is my Blackberry Messenger to communicate with my family abroad during the day and that app has been behaving nicely. Everything else, minus HD Widgets, has been Greenified, and I can go all day (unplug at 7A, plug back in around 9P with plenty of juice left.
So this is what I get after a long period using wakelock detector. Does anyone have any insight as to what this all means. What does the x538 refer to and how does this app show how it's affecting my phone? One is the CPU wake lock and the other is the screen.

Hey guys! I hope you're all enjoying your new Priv! I got mine on release day, so I've been tinkering with it since I got it. A few things bothered me about the device: the battery would take forever to charge, even using a Qualcomm certified quick charger, and the battery would drain abnormally fast. Even with no apps running, Antutu would only score 40,000 to 50,000 and 800/2500 in Geekbench.
I found out that the T-Mobile MyAccount app was always running in the background and took up 6% of my phone's battery, just above android OS. After I disabled that app, I found that a full charge would only take about an hour, versus the 2 hours it took before. Battery life also skyrocketed from about 8 hours to 14+. Antutu scores went up to 60,000 to 67,000 (I tested several times) and Geekbench now consistently scores 1200/3500 for me. The phone also doesn't get NEARLY as hot as it used to.
One other thing I did was to change all my accounts in the hub to sync every 15 minutes instead of push, which also seemed to help with the battery life. Hope this info helps you turn your Priv into the best phone it can be!

I heard that some people on Blackberry forums were reporting that T-Mobile My Account app could/is causing battery drainage. I didn't like my account app showing me notifications and went to options in that app and remove all the check marks from the there. I had no issues with battery, but as a precaution I always disable apps that I never use.
Thanks for the heads-up. Finally picked one up today and felt that it did indeed heat up quicker than it should and definitely wasn't charging as fast as I thought it should be. Hopefully this helps!
My Priv's battery has been an utter nightmare - gonna give this a shot. Have you noticed any adverse effects from disabling the app? My main concern is if BingeOn will still work. I'm okay with not being able to disable it (not a big video guy) but free music streaming is super important to me - streaming music at work constantly during an 8hr shift, in the car during my commute... yeah, I need that.
And, before anyone says anything, it's not the music streaming doing it. In fact, the battery seems almost better when I'm doing that since I've just got the phone sitting in my pocket. Wakelocks are an absolute nuisance though - "awake" time is well over 10x SoT.

BingeOn doesn't require any T-Mobile bloat to run. It's handled on the network side, not on the device itself. Also, unless they recently changed something, you don't need BingeOn enabled to get free music streaming. Music streaming is free regardless.
Thanks for that. So far the Priv is doing a fine job keeping itself alive now that app is gone. Nice to know I won't be blowing past my data allowance. I'm new to T-Mobile and so far, so good. Well, other than their app destroying my phone of course.

You'll get all that bloat with any carrier
I do want to point out that the Priv does an awesome job of standby. It makes sense that a 2K screen could drain the battery quickly, but I've gone 9 hours with only 40% drain when I barely use it, so it stays alive well when you aren't actively using it. I was also streaming music the whole time, but since the screen itself was off it saved my battery.

Yep, that's been my experience. On for ~16 hours with 3hrs SoT. Not bad, really. I wouldn't mind a little more longevity but hey, that's what power banks are for.
Here's my own battery experience. I only removed the t-mobile apps and using Facebook on chrome and not the app. I'm a moderate user 2.5 hrs of on screen time!

The screen is a killer on this device, but it shouldn't be quite that bad. Are all your BlackBerry apps up to date? Some people have to manually check for updates for some reason.
Also, I disabled every T-Mobile app except visual voicemail. No idea if that'll help or not but it's worth a shot.
Finally, how long have you had the device? Phones always seem screwy battery-life wise during the first few days, regardless of system health.
I disabled all bloatware, this phone dies WAYYYYY to fast compare to my prior note 5.
I really dont, but i'll need to trade back in this phone if I don't get this solved. A man needs a phone with a battery!

How about this one for a little bit over 2 weeks and so far it's been phenomenal for me 1 degrees in love with a good battery life is I disabled Facebook and I just use the web to look at Facebook so that save my battery by at least 20%.

Other than battery life, how are you liking the switch? I like but don't love my note 5. I hadn't had a note since the original version, but I'm finding again that I just don't use the spen. I'm thinking about jumping back into a blackberry with keyboard.

I'll take back what I previously wrote, as of yesterday I managed to get 24 hours on phone battery. at standby this phone doesn't use any sort of battery, I killed 20 percent in 40 mins on youtube though..
Going to give it a solid week, if not i'll return it and hopefully pick up the new s7 if release by then. I was on the same boat as you, got tired of the note and just wanted a switch. I'll keep checking back leaving my reviews here

I'll second this - screen off, next to zero battery used. Screen on, battery tanks like crazy. I think I'm gonna stick with it though I'm tempted to give the V10 a shot - I need a tough phone and this most certainly is not.
