Hello everyone!
I'm new here, but have been lurking and scouring the forums for a while now. I'm not a dev or anything, so I'm a total noob when it comes to cooking up roms and such... although I've done pleanty of flashing on different devices. I'm treating myself to a new phone as a late birthday present, and the HD2 looks like the best offering at the moment (or anytime soon) from T-Mobile. I just don't want to be stuck with such awesome hardware, running an OS that will be mostly obselete in a few months.
I've read that MS will continue to support WM 6.5, but we all know their deal... it'll be an afterthought once WP7 is released. I would be fine with upgrading to WP7, but unfortunately the HD2 has two too many buttons to meet the HW requirements (according to MS at this point.)
The main thing that makes me believe porting Android would be more plausible, is the upcoming release of the EVO. The hardware is so similar, it's hard for me to believe that it's not possible. Once the EVO is released, could someone use the Android 2.1 image from it, and modify it to run on the HD2? Again, I'm not a programmer, so I'm probably completely wrong... but would love to be proven otherwise.
I'm just looking for some of you with more knowledge and experience to give me some technical insight before dropping $450 on a new phone that will be out-of-date and no longer supported (for the most part) in 6 months. I would also like to keep this thread on topic, so please don't bother slagging the HD2 and suggesting other devices.
Thanks!
and another thread pops up =(
search the forum there are literally tons of threads about this
TONS especially on android
for wp7 there is no news since march 28th announcement so that means nothing more to report than the initial issues had
this is also in the windows phone 7 forum
if you want the phone, get the phone. Winows mobile is a good and highly customizable operating systme on its own and I like it.
you won't regret getting this phone, I sold my nexus one for it, and I don't even miss N1 (simply because it is not the best android phone anymore, HD 2 the best winmo up to date).
I am also a noob, but I encourage myself very often. Now android can run on iphone, what else would stop those geniuses from creating such miracles on HD2. All I have to do is enjoying the phone from the minute I have it, and stick to the forum.
I wouldn't buy the HD2 purely on the speculation of an Android port. There's no certainty that it will ever happen, and if it does, who knows how long it will take.
There are ports for older HTC models and the iPhone, but you have to keep in mind that those handsets have been out for a while, and have had many months, if not years, of development behind them. The HD2 and the snapdragon processor are relatively new, and development is starting from the ground up. It may take up to a year or more before a functional android port is available, and by then, there will more than likely be better hand-sets out there.

Thanks for the reply!
I've actually searched many times, and read tons of threads on this topic. The problem is, most of them are cluttered with TONS of vague info and flaming, with a tidbit of useful info here and there. I was hoping to open some discussion and spark some ideas or interest, maybe try and centralize the info.
Sorry for stepping on any toes, but this is the "T-Mobile USA HD2" general discussion forum, so I figured this would be the best place to start. I just searched the development forum and found a similar thread. I just didn't check there, as I was intending to discuss the possibility and such, not actual developing. Mods, if I'm out of line here, please move or lock this thread appropriately.
Thanks!
Edit- to the other posters, thanks for sharing experiences with me! I wasn't planning on buying the HD2 soley in hopes of porting Android, I guess I'm just looking for reassurance from folks that I'm not getting myself into a device that isn't worth the effort. I love modding my phones, but would rather not be stuck beating a dead horse in a few months. The feedback is greatly appreciated, and makes me feel much better about my decision.

this is true. android on the iphone only works on the iphone 2g as far as i can tell, and that phone is over 4 years old i believe. building linux kernels for a specific phone takes time, and most likely it'll take years to perfect. the ports out now for older winmo phones are useable but obviously not perfect.
i bought my hd2 mainly because it looks like pure sex to me. hehe. windows mobile didnt bother me at all since ive been using windows mobile phones since 2007. dont get me wrong, android is pretty good too. used that for about a year. each os has its own pros and cons i guess.

you wont regret getting this phone. in my opinion htc did a good job with sense, making windows mobile user friendly and whatnot, but if you dont like sense, it can be easily disabled. also the stock rom to me works fine right now but there are a lot of other roms made for the hd2 already so its pretty customizable as is already.

Cool, thanks for the info!
I usually try to keep from modding straight away, but after checking some roms in the development forum, I'm sure I'll start flashing sooner than later, hehe. The main thing I'm liking about the HD2 is it comes stock with the apps I'm most likely to use. I had a 2g iPhone a while back, but found I didn't use most of the apps I installed, and gave it up for a 3g device. Most of what I'm looking for is games/entertainment and themes, and I believe I've found what I'm looking for. If I'm not happy, I may try to cook up something of my own... there's certainly pleanty of resources here to get me started!
Again, I apologize for the redundant thread, but I appreciate all the feedback. This is exactly what I was looking for!

They have been working on porting linux and android to the HD2 for months now. It's not an easy process, as I have stated in the many threads that get started about this. The EVO rom cannot just be ported over. The N1 is just as close hardware wise... they actually used the N1 as a starting point for creating the linux kernel. The Evo may help a little with some drivers.
You have to understand... the kernel for the msm72xx devices (touchpro, TP2, kaiser, etc.) was started over 3 years ago... and they still don't have a fully-functional android port. There will be an android port eventually, but by time theres a fully functional port, there will be many nicer android phones out. Expect it to take a year or more for a fully-functional port, if it's ever FULLY-functional. Search the Rom section in the original Leo section for the official linux project thread.
Get the phone if you like WinMo 6.5. If not, wait for another phone. Trust me, there will be just as nice Android phones for tmobile in the next few months, and WinPhone 7 phones by the end of the year.
Hello all,
This post is meant so we can get to know each other before the dev community gets going. This way we learn what each other's strengths are and can maybe get things going better.
My name is Chuck and I am a well versed XDAer. I came from the HTC Wizard and WinMo and then moved on to the G1. There I learned from guys like JF, Haykuro and, everyone's hero, Cyanogen. I didn't really do any devving there though. I then moved on to the Hero and since we didn't really have any devs I stepped up and learned how to cook roms. Then I learned how to compile AOSP and kernels. I built the Gutted Hero rom, which I eventually abandoned due to time restraints but I know that won't happen here. I am attempting to learn more about linux exploits and gaining root so that hopefully I can help root this beautiful device when it comes today.
So anyone else who wants to please join in and let us know your background.
Hi Chuck!
I'm pretty much a n00b when it comes to the dev environment, but I want to jump in and get my hands dirty I started reading XDA back when the HTC Titan (Mogul) first hit the scenes, but then jumped into a Blackberry... Since jumping, I haven't really looked back into wanting to learn until news of Android... Then mentions of the HTC "Supersonic" coming to a CDMA carrier (I have Sprint btw) and as well as the N1 possibly releasing a CDMA version. That caught my attention and now I really want to learn and jump into developing!
Now I'm trying to read up as much from the different Android forums, but it's all so much... Trying to take it one step at a time. I'm not a complete n00b when technology is involved, as I used to build boxes back in the day of Pentium II/III, AMD T-Bird days, PC Tech for Gateway (when they had stores), and the sorts...
Stinks that the N1 is not coming to Sprint, but I am planning on getting the Evo. Definately wanting and willing to learn as much as I can!
admin over at SDX-developers.com

strong suite, linux. decent with java. terrible with being creative like theming.
excited to work together on the EVO!

Hey guys,
Ok, i have background what so ever... But im slowly learning java so i can start coding and so on with android. So basically my cup is empty...
just wanted to say hi !
Oh and another thing i wanted to add, I was always the guy that devs get files and stuff to for testing and made guides on how to install things and so on ^.^
side note
Themer
Well this is a nice way to meet each other and see what we can assist each other with. I began with editing files, back in the Apache the small fridge looking device . I've been in the windows scene for about 3-5 yrs or so and modded, and mostly created themes. In that time frameI learned to edit manila files, make cabs, and learned how to edit all different software ui apps, windows, and shell. The Vogue had the android files arranged and worked with to use in the sdcard and have the android working with it working I found out how to edit files and do some soft modding. I then learned how to theme but with family and biz I've still got the need to sit down and learn to package, and the rest of the guru qualities as some of you may have. Here is a thread I've begun as I did with the Hero for all creations, mods, themes etc to be shared. I've enjoyed learning and being a part of XDA, looking forward to the fellowship. I've begun editing the Evo files and created some clock's and will continue with rosie, taskbar and apk's you can view it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=685537
Apache-Mogul-Vogue Touch-TouchPro-Hero-Evo soon
Thanks to you all that played a part in rooting, roms, modding and making it possible for themers to give it a touch of class to share with everyone as you have with your work.. Thank you
Good idea for a thread.
I'm Justin--but it's easier to go by Shidell--and I'm moving over from the Vogue community. Within the last two years I've gotten serious about development, and have a strong .NET background with a (growing) C/C++ background. However, linux is still pretty foreign to me, which makes development on that platform somewhat challenging.
With the Vogue, I compiled my own build of Eclair for it from AOSP, and worked with Dzo, mssmison, jnadke (and others, all the names evade me right now) on updating/fixing the GPS library.
I'm fairly clueless when it comes to the bootloader, the kernel, how one would go about exploiting either to achieve root (or even how to go about doing so), but I'm eager to learn and help.
I plan on keeping my Vogue and continuing to learn by using that as a test device for more serious ambitions (kernel development/flashing, etc.) But I'll be actively involved in this community as well. Please feel free to ping me with questions, requests for assistance, etc.
(Also, I do have an Evo via Google I/O, so if you're looking for data a bit early, I'd be glad to help.)
Hello all- I have no experience with this stuff at all other rooting & running different roms/hacks on my former devices (g1 & mt3g) so I was debating whether to even post this here...however I am very interested in learning as much as I can about everything mentioned above & more- it is fascinating to me!
So any suggestions on where to start learning (books/links/etc)?
6/4/10 can't get get here soon enough!
tester here
i am willing to begin testing you may send me a pm and we can discuss over gtalk.
i have years of experience of flashing my phone numerous times back in the ppc6700 days and have had a moment since january and always flashing off sdx and am glad to be back on xda! hit me up ill work with you and tell you what bugs i find etc after i know your phone wasnt bricked
Hello, im a loyal follower of joeykrim from sdx-developers. No experience in writing or creating, but MORE than willing to be a test dummy, guide writer, as i can be quite explicit (the good kind), or a noob helper. pm me and i can get you my email address, phone number, or we can chat through facebook. not currently using any other methods of communication but im willing to switch to anything else more universally accepted by these fine forums.
EDIT: joined xda because the evo is coming out, and i hear this is THE place for htc devices. want to give all the assistance i can
My name is Dan, though I also go by Q. I got an EVO at Google I/O, and want to get it rooted while I still can (an NDA may get in the way soon)
I've been hacking on Linux for 8 years now, and know the entire system very well. I'm also not particularly afraid to solder (which is unfortunate, because I'm also not particularly good at it), so that may be an option. I also have a Droid and a Google ION.
I'm a jack-of-all-trades. I know some C, mediocre C++, C# expert, some java (easy to pick up), php, vb.net, etc. I know hardware, but not embedded stuff. I'm the geek that other computer geeks come to. You get the idea.
But, what skills are you using to modify the Android kernel? Do I need to know assembly? C++? I know I need to know C and the Linux kernel, but how much of the kernel do I need to know? Beginner, so-so, professional, expert? Do I need to know embedded Linux specifically? Do I need to know Linux drivers?
Just point me into the right direction, thanks!
I currently have the G1 from 2 years ago. I'm put my deposit down, and getting my EVO on 6/4/2010. I look forward to learning from you guys.
im well... toastcfh been through a lot with linux for sure. it all started with my old Dell Axim X50. i began working on linux for that device before android was a real deal. then i got a HTC Diamond and did a lot of kernel work for the support of linux on it and other HTC devices. got my HTC Heroc by a streak of luck and smooth talking for free (sprint can be dumb) . anyhow, on the Heroc i managed to be a big part of root, porting and development for it. the main things im known for is my work on Eclair for the Heroc and more recently my port of Eris 2.6.29 kernel source to the Heroc. creating my own board files through a lot of creative debugging and previous struggles with backporting drivers from .29 to .27. at the moment its the only .29 source for the Heroc as Sprint/HTC hasnt even released the .29 source for the device yet. also my work with overclocking the Heroc, but those are just notable contributions to the community ive made. im also the kind of person that is willing to help almost anyone. ask anyone whose ever asked for my help. i believe in the idea of open source and helping others. i also believe in giving credit where credit is due. or at least giving it the boyscout effort anyhow i cant promise ill be ablee to make ur EVO turn into a skynet and cleanup the oil spill in the Gulf. but i can promise that ill damn sure try. im not one to be told it cant be done, nor will i ever except that statement unless it can be proven without a shadow of a doubt (btw its pretty hard to prove to me )
anyhow im looking forward to root, as we need that first and for most. im happy to know we got some awesome devs here and coming soon.
as a single developer i am nothing. but together we can have everything.

yes! youre getting an evo 4g! we're going to have a nice group of devs here ..i having a feeling toast is going to be the one to port froyo
Cheers to all the great devs speaking out. I've been watching the android game from the sidelines since the G1... I've been a palm loyalist for the longest time, but I'm finally dropping the Pre to jump onthe EVO.
Can't wait to get into customs roms (bleh to Sense, hoping for vanilla froyo).
I'll be everyone's testpig, I promise
Hey guys, I'm Kyle. Currently a computer science major at Berkeley. I haven't really messed around with Android before, but I attended I/O and received an Evo. I really want to get this thing rooted, but I have no idea where to even start. If anybody has some pointers, that would be great.
Happy hacking
Adam / apristel - Live in Green Bay, WI, 15yr computer tech, mostly windoze and linux.
Started phone hacking when the RAZR came out. I helped get modmymoto.com going and spent alot of time being a mod there. I also created some very popular roms aka monsterpacks for the GSM V3 RAZR, then moved to the V6 MAXX....few years later got onto the WM Scene, got a TP and eventually a TP2. I made personal roms, never shared them, but I shared tons of hacks and cabs I made. I got sick of WM and got a moment and a hero. ..now the EVO in a few days.
I'm willing to put in what I can, I know I'm not at the level of you linux pro's but I'm not scared to try anything.
Glad to see familiar names here - this should be an exciting time. Glad to share it with you fellas.
Welcome me in!
I've done a lot of themes for HTC devices throughout the years. I've owned mainly windows mobile devices, such as i930, Apache, Titan, Touch Diamond, Touch Pro, and the Touch Pro 2. I've always been flashing ROM's and helping ROM dev's with hexing things, changing some layouts here and there, registry edits and of course testing it before it went public. I also host all this stuff online for free since I HATE countdown sites for a download.
I helped with MightyROM themes and we had over 7TB of data pulled from the servers, which is pretty amazing, but I'm all Android now!
I hope to learn Android quickly and hope that some of my tools will also work with it. I have good hosting capabilities if a dev needs it, and I'm more then willing to help. I've done work for over 10+ cooks, on over 8 different devices since 2003.
Background: BSCE, Machine Language on MIPS, x86 / arm / mot / att assembly, C/++ on Posix and Win32. PIC / HC11 system design. GCC cross compiling. Have a JTAG, digital storescope, and an HP protocol analyzer. Been using Linux exclusively at home since '99.
Projects:
- Open source contributor on a few Linux projects (mainly device driver / interface development)
- Helped with the Agenda Vr3 (Snow rom)
- Hacked around with the IPAQ Linux (hardware and software)
- Helped with the Zaurus FBVnc effort
- Helped with the IOpener hack / USB problems
- Helped with the EPOD Windows CE hack / drivers
- Helped with various efforts on the Palm Pre
Future Projects:
- Root (someone will probably beat me to this)
- WebKit over HDMI (not sure where it stands on launch day)
- BT HID Keyboard (sounds like we need some back porting here)
- BT HID Mouse (virgin territory from what I have seen)
- Video recording bitrate (fun project on the side)
The EVO is my first android phone, not my first HTC though. So hopefully I can help a little bit here and there.
Hello,
I work with a small company and develop everything from boards to firmware to full-blown desktop applications for interfacing with different sensors and devices.
I've started at both ends of the computer world and am working my way towards the middle. On one hand I know my way around assembler (although I prefer C...) and write firmware for AVRs and PIC microcontrollers and on the other I'm a fluent .Net developer and have built some pretty complex .Net applications, some PHP applications, and fiddled around with the Google web toolkit.
I've reverse engineered hardware before but nothing close to the complexity of the EVO. I've never developed for Android before but I'm eager to break out the SDK and learn. I have some limited Java experience (my philosophy is once you know one managed language you know them all and I have some extensive experience with it's cousin, C#).
Very eager to start tearing into the EVO and Android system and see if I can't contribute to the effort to root and expand this device!
I've never been a huge contributor to a community effort but I hope to change that in the coming years and see if I can't contribute something back to the communities I have learned so much from!
I'll be getting my EVO June 4th
Relative rookie here in terms of mobile devices. I've put together a few custom WinMo ROMs for co-workers and myself. I've quite a few devices, but currently have the ones in my sig. I'm a professional computer geek. I write apps in C++, various .NET, PHP, etc. and work primarily with server systems (Windows, Linux, Solaris, etc.).
Looking forward to contributing to the Android world soon. Lots of great stuff here.
It makes sense (to me) that if Google saw the fantastic efforts of chefs on XDA, they would probably consider releasing the tools/equipment to ensure a 100% experience on current WM6.5 models.
Lots of WM users are facing a switch to a new OS soon but not necessarily ready to part with new hardware. It seems a good way of boosting their users by a couple of 100,000/million or so.
I was just wondering if this is a (remote) possibility, apologies if this is a ridiculous question
Google would gain nothing compared to antagonising ms and htc. yes they sue each other weekly, but this would be annoying them for no gain.
besides which, they don't need to, its already shaping up to be one of the smoothest ports so far, so even less reason to rock the boat.
They do not give a hoot about their users.
They care a great deal about their next "buyers". I am waiting for that great piece of hardware that will come from AT&T with Windows Phone 7 on it! So, I can put WinMo 6.5 and my Cookie to work. The best thing about WP 7 is that MS will not care what we do with <7 versions. It can become a real OS of the people, for the people, by the people, because the revenue center is behind them now. When was the last time that MS had much to do with your <7 OS? All of you <7 users don't dispair. MS thought enough of you to give you Officve Mobile 2010 didn't they? If they were going to abandon you they would have done just that. Let the WP7 people Twitter their life away. I have work to do!
Clue: It is not going to be the OS that keeps you from doing what you want to do with your phone. It is going to be the manufacturer of the phone and their customer, the cell provider.
Now, I appreciate everything that these devs have had to offer. I've tried different Custom Roms (With Core Cell 3 being the most stable I've experienced, outside of the annoying Opera Mamory bug)...Android builds...and all that great efforts you guys Put forth.
I look at all these threads and Roms and see the same thing over and over...bugs...bugs....and more bugs...
The most stable Windows Rom I've truly experience is the stock one...lol...not being a smart a$$ at all. Everything just works. Take a registry editor to it and it's provided the most stable platform with Core Cell 3 a hair away from it.
Now, with Android, I see constant bug reports. I mean, people seem to have a great appreciation for the builds and love them, but it always follows up with a major bug...or even worse...lots of little bugs.
What I don't understand is why don't all you devs get together and build the "XDA" Custom Rom or "XDA" Android build that gets undiveded attention and all resources so to make it truly BUG free? Once that has been accomplished...then we can go ahead and try these test builds and play with them...
Now, I say this with a great deal of respect, having worked with developers before I know how fragile the ego's can be
It's also my experience with those same developers that taught me complete focus of resources surfaced the best result.
I mean, an effort like that is something I would pay...eeerrrrr....donate too.
Android seems to be the future for the HD2, at least I think so...some may have a different opinion...that's cool. But as much as I actually like WinMo 6.5...and WinMO 7 showing signs of being a demo at best on the HD2, Android has a future.
I think it would be a great idea for you guys to focus on one thing at a time until it's at a state you can consider it marketable...not that I'm saying that's what you should do...sell things and all.
I would even think it would be cool to take WinMo 6.5 and change it into something completely different and better than what Microsoft settled for...I always promote making Big Brother look silly with a superior view of their own product.
My point is...no matter what platform or approach...get together on it...I bet the result would be far more productive.
I fear though that this idea...no matter how much sense it makes...will not come to fruition...WHAT THE DEUCE!
Looking forward to your thoughts.
well i came up with this idea http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=902534 and would need a thew devs to work on it,about having our own unoficiall Android Rom,Something wich we can say is our own HD2 rom not direct ports if you know were im coming from and pretty much bug free and stable and fast.i know a thew devs came together to create nand so why not do it to create a rom
Thew?
Sent from my HD2 using XDA App
Hah, bug free... That's an interesting idea. The last bug free thing I saw was my Nokia 3210. Since then even my microwave ovens get bugs.
The devs do work together for the most part... different problems get solved by different devs, and they credit each other. I think its amazing what they've accomplished. You should be more than happy with how well we have a port working. I never thought it would get as good as it has, especially as quick as it has. Just look at the Raphael or blackstone... they've been working on ports for those devices for years and are nowhere close to where we are, and might never be.
The devs are doing what they can. This is their hobby... they're gonna work on what interests them. You can't expect them to all work on what you want them to... they would lose interest and we wouldn't have so much innovation. Plus a little competition can bring the best out of a person.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
Well most of the bugs in Android are at the kernel level, and there is already a group of developers working on that same piece of software together.
You also have to keep in mind, as other users in this thread have already said, that no software will be without bugs.
I guess...I just know with absolute confidence this idea will work best. Nonetheless, I understand. Also, it's not what I want?...its about completing a task these forums have already put in motion...just at a more effective manor.
i want sense build base on desire hd or z
its will be lite enuf to run from RAM and boot fast
the Data.img will be backed up in the nand but will work from SD card for better performance
that's what i think is perfect to me
RAM gives boot time and less battery drain
data.img on nand and sd card is for better iops and for backuping ur info fast with CWM
u can remove anything u dont use cos it wont be in the RAM
all most important things like email / messages / people browser will run from RAM to get the speed-est performance
As has been stated, aren't most the bugs pretty common to all builds in one way or another therefore indicating that the problem is at the programming level rather than the rom developer level.
IMHO find one you're happy with and take the bugs with a pinch of salt - the HD2 is still one of the most exciting handsets about and to have the ability to experiment with all this thanks to the ROM guys and the tools developers on here is just blooming fantastic!
Stop moaning and appreciate what we have here!
Personally, I think this is a bad idea.
I'm very happy to have multiple developers all working on different projects and supplying us with different ROMs. For example, I hate HTC Sense and prefer stock Android, but lots of people disagree with that and think Sense builds are superior.
If all the devs worked on only 1 ROM then that's all we'd have. 1 ROM. My phone would be the same as yours, and yours would be the same as every other person on the forum. That would be pretty darn boring! If you ask me, more choice is better.
"If everybody looked the same, we'd get tired of looking at each other."
I never said stop working on different flavors of Roms. Just focus on an XDA Rom. Once refined, let the flavors flow...right?
You know, I approach this topic from a respective and open discussion approach with an expressed curiosity at most and the best you can do is confuse it for moaning?
It's guys like you that start all the flaming, when you have people who are simply exchanging ideas.
There's always a few out of the bunch that can't resist being abrasive aka a$$holes while others are just chatting.

Coming from the Epic, and then from the S3, I have noticed the fragmentation of Android with just the dilution of good development.
With that said, I acknowledge I am a user, not a Developer. I've tried to get interested in development, it is just not where my passion lies.
This is one of those useless posts you see on XDA, however, I feel like there is not much going on in this forum so maybe this is the best discussion we could have.
Take Apple, they have one product to focus on, no one to share the spotlight with. Android on the other hand has several, I have no idea how many, to share the spot light with. S3, S4, S5, Oppo, One, name your poison.
I say all this because I remember back to the Epic... It was Epic. The phone was amazing when it came out, the development was even better.
Now that I'm on the S4, while I don't want to take away anything from what the developers on this phone have done, it is not their fault, but developers will flock to where the demand is. And it just doesn't seem to be here.
Maybe this is Sprints fault? I stay with Sprint because they're the cheapest option I have. Certainly not the best, but definitely the cheapest.
Just trying to promote a discussion, not a flame war. Start now.

With unified builds, awesome devs are still contributing to our device! Its cool that a talented dev who builds aosp but is with verizon can build for us too. There is no shortage of great development going on, but I'll admit the sprint s4 forums are not as active as I remember the e4gt forums being.
To address your other point, sure - the sheer amount of android devices available will mean the pool of talented devs are spread more thinly across the spectrum of devices, but this community rocks and with a little google-fu (xda helps those who help themselves) I don't think development has really stalled. The forums are just a little less active. What IS a shame is that users here will drive talented devs away from releasing their work publicly on the forums by driving them insane with questions that have been answered 100s of times, petty politics, and flame wars, etc.
But at the end of the day, I would rather have an open OS with a vibrant (or dull) community than a locked down device I can never truly have full control over. But frequent upgrades have always been pushed by manufacturers, at the end of the day profits are the bottom line for them. Thats what is so great about this community, is that the devs here do work that would have gotten them a decent commission or wage elsewhere, FOR FREE. God bless :good::highfive:
All good points, and I would have to say I agree with you, especially with the shame that developers sometimes are driven away by lazy users.

I'm not a developer either (well of any roms/android mods at least). But as a long time computer power user and burgeoning programmer (3rd year comp sci major) the development on the S4 is very lack luster. We could get into comparing S4 vs development on older platforms, but I'd rather just discuss the generally bad development in the sprint S4 non-original android dev. forum. Most roms are not suited for daily drivers. I have personally tried 2-3 different versions of Sac's Rom and negalite's rom( as well as 1 try on various other roms) and none was with out major flaws.
The problem as I see it is this: The demand is for the newest rom with the most up to date android features. So as rom developers are getting closer to making a stable working version of their roms, Sprint releases an update at which point most developers switch and start working on new release with out ever making a fully functioning rom. To make matters worse most Rom's are presented as a finished product. Some have a known issues section in the first post ,but I challenge any one who disagrees with me to find a known issues section on a rom that actually contains all the know issues. It doesn't exsist. Instead each user is left to download an unfinished product and only after discovering an issue and digging though 10 pages of forums you find others have the same issue and that there may or may not be a soultion. How f'ing hard is it when a god damn issues is reported to update the orginal post?????? I understand these developers are doing this out of the good of their hearts, but anything worth doing is worth doing correctly. If it is to much work to keep an up to date list of ALL known issues, have one of the roms users do so. Not much work for one fan of a rom to keep list of issues if dev cant be bothered.
You help no one when custom roms break things working in the stock version and present it as a working rom. Custom roms used to add fucntion to a device now, it adds somethings and breaks others. Till this trend changes, the best rom is stock rooted + w/e mod a user desires. When a bunch of things dont work label your Rom alpha when most things work call it beta and only when everything works call it stable. This kind of common sense would improve everyone's experience greatly.

To a degree, I definitely am with you on this. I have been with this forum since the days of my old HTC thunderbolt. There are AT LEAST 5 popular daily drivers that worked worlds better than the stock rom for that phone. My particular phone glitches out on the dialer/phone app for all Original Android ROM's meaning I am automatically limited to a TW rom. I've tried everything to fix this but nothing seems to. However, there is one that works flawlessly, Triforce 5.4. It's perfect, so far as I can tell, but is starting to show its age. It may be the only perfect ROM for our phones but is almost completely without bells and whistles, unlike the Thunderbolt, which you could save multiple working images to SD and restore if you felt like using sense one day, CM the next, and I do recall a few completely custom ones loosely based on CM that worked awesome. Anyway that's my say on it. I am sad NAE firmware capabilities don't have a nice Triforce release to go with it, but the PRL and firmware seem to work great with the ROM, so I guess I'll stick to it, even if it is boring. It definitely does everything I need for it to do. Still, finding the issues with each one and helping the developers is part of the process. It's fun and part of the reason why I do what I do. Take my ASUS Transformer. That thing is old as the hills, but has multi window, android 4.4.3, windowed apps, and all manner of other things and it runs super smooth. timduru is the dang wizard of that device and refuses to let it die peacefully.

I just recently got off heavily modded stock and flashed Super S4 and so far it is awesome. Ktoonz's Kernel is baked in and after using recommended recovery to flash I've had no problems. It isn't heavily modded (mostly other mods baked in and some init.d tweaks) but is fast and stable and is one of the very few TW roms I'd recommend.
When I was on HTC Inspire 4G, There were easily 10 Roms (ASOP and Sense) suitable for a daily driver. For the S4 I'd be hard pressed to find 3 stable usable TW roms at a time.
I think android as a platform is changing a lot philosophically, as well. Older custom roms used to be a must have and were the main reason most users wanted root. Now everything is much more framework centric. Now root is used to add functionality through Xposed framework modules,or audio mods like Viper. Previously each and every mod had to be rom specific.
