This german site apparantly has first-hand information that Samsung is planning to roll out the Froyo update mid-September, via Kies of course...
This makes me wonder how close to final the JPC update was...
Also, Kies ist just downloading an update (and taking forever to do it) which might also point at things approaching some kind of big release. I have no idea whether the GPS fixes and Lag fixes will be included in this mid-September release, but I'd guess it's pretty unlikely since the last info from Samsung was that they are "looking into it" implying that they don't really know yet. Maybe we'll at least see some improvement, test runs with Jm6, Jm7 and JPc indicate that GPS performance is being worked on at least.
We'll see what September will give us and then start hoping for October updates...
I'm watching the new version of Kies trickle on to my PC as I type... I was thinking the same... is this a new Kies which won't brick Bell user's phones when they try to upgrade to Froyo!? It seems finding out what's new will take a while though... been downloading this update for about an hour already... and still have 37meg to go! S

I suppose this is in line with the same line of announcements that were stating that a Korean Froyo would be available by end of August...
Mine just finished. So far all it's telling me is that I can't update from JPC...well...that#s not exactly new, but it also isn't mid-September yet...^^
I"m kinda noob @ android stuff , atm I got the Galaxy S rooted with lag fix is kies the only possibility to get the new offical froyo soon? so yes , is there anyway a good tutorial for how to use kies..
Thanks

I definitely think delaying past mid-September is a bad move. Many other high end phones using the official 2.2 builds for about a month or more.
Then again, the announcement on Korean Froyo turned out to give false hope to a guy like me. Someone was saying how Optus would be getting this because he heard from an Optus rep that they were. I stated at that time there are 3 days left in August and Korea hadn't been upgraded now we are entering the weekend and will probably end the weekend waking up on the 6th of Sept without Froyo, so if everything else gets delayed the same amount of time...it doesn't mean great things for the rollout.
That said, I do think the hardware is similar enough that I was originally surprised to hear they might get Froyo as many as two weeks before the next countr(y/ies). Maybe they will condense the rollout timeframe.
My Kies doesn´t find new version. Can anybody post the version number of the new one?
versionnumber is : 1.5.1.10074_45

i have 1.5.1.10074_2 and it's the only one available on samsungmobile pages (at least for UK and my country)

Nice, I have been waiting for an announcement like this. Can't wait to get 2.2, mainly for the chrome2phone feature and of course Flash.
So the JI6 update is starting to roll out today, finally! My question is I rooted my phone and applied the one click lag fix. Should I uninstall this and take my phone back to stock before the update? Is it possible the lag fix could cause problems when the update installs?
Thanks!

The update is staggered until the end of the month.
so if we have a ROM like Bionix 1.5 which already fixed the GPS is there any reason to accept this update?

yes there is, i just got off the phone with android support, the update is supposed to have 40 + bug fixes, not specifically named but they are there, the battery accuracy is now fixed, media hub is activated officially, not a leaked version, the gps is fixed, the compass is fixed, contacts sync is fixed, calendar alarms are fixed to work properly now, no word on a widget though, a new 10th anniversary sims game is included, different from the one we had at launch apparently. there are other things too, but i forgot some of them, but overall, a solid update if i do say so myself.
Will Kies Upate phones still get the OTA update.
So i have seen the question but not the answer, I did the Kies update I think it is called JI5, will I still get the OTA update?
If not anyone have a link to instructions on how to rollback the kies update.

OTA Updates are rolled out in batches, not all at once. It generally takes weeks for an OTA to get to everyone.
You can either patiently wait for it, check daily manually, or just Odin JI6 as it's already here in the dev forum.
If you're not on JFD stock, then you've already become accustomed to taking matters into your own hands. Why stop now?
I have the same question. I am on JI2, but I want to know if I will get the update.

it is my opinion that as long as you are running the stock kernel then you should be able to load the JI6 update when it is pushed OTA. I have nothing to prove this other than my own logic. So until someone running JI5 can tell us they got notified and updated then we will have to wait and see.
I got this phone in early Sept. Running it completely stock except using Launcher Pro Plus. Haven't rooted it because it's hardware locked. I read that all the customers will get the update by the end of October. Am I the only one that hasn't received their update officially over the air? Should I just wait a couple more days?
I just tried dialing *#*#8736364#*#* to start software update and just got connecting to DM something in notification bar. That went away after a couple mins. and tried start software update again. Got the same results.
I would wait a few days and if by Nov 1st you don't get the update then you can call your carrier and ask them to force it to your phone.
Or you could just do it manually, which honestly I suggest, because I just like many others , got a soft brick when I installed the update over the air.
You can use the software that Samsung put out, Mini Klies , to apply the update.
here's the link: http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa...ID=2&PROD_SUB_ID=557&PROD_ID=560&AT_ID=341559

Honestly, if you want to take an hour or two to read up on it, it's really easy to get rid of the hardware lock by flashing a fix through Odin. Yeah, it's daunting at first, but I took the plunge and now I'm a ROM-flashing whore. You probably don't need to read that much, but I did just because of my cautious nature. There's a thread in the Development forum with the fix and instructions.
My take is that it's far more likely the OTA will mess you up than using Odin (use v1.3!). Once you remove the lock, it's *almost* impossible to brick this bad boy.

Heh, I came from an ancient Blackberry, if that makes you feel better.
But yeah, using Odin is stupid easy (but you need to be on Windows AFAIK). Just to give you a quick overview of what you'll need to do, you need to download
1) the Samsung phone drivers,
2) Odin 1.3,
3) the hardware lock fix, and
4) the Android SDK (just for adb, which is like a terminal program that you use to boot your phone into download or recovery mode; since a hardware locked phone can't get into download or recovery with the buttons, you use adb to force it to reboot into download or recovery).
Use adb to boot your Vibrant into download mode, drop the right file into Odin and go. There are actually good Youtube videos on using Odin too (can you tell I researched the crap out of this before risking it?).

Wow~ I'm going to try it through Kies Mini.
Kies Mini stopped seeing my phone altogether after the last update. Windows just sees it as a dumb thumb drive (cause the drivers are installed, ofc).
But if someone who's phone works can post if Kies mini even tells them there's an update available that would be nice.
It usually gives the basebane of the update, and that can/would tell us what it is.

When I came into my store yesterday our demo Vibrant had 'DM arrows' showing but had already been upgraded. I went ahead and "told it" to upgrade. Nothing changed.
The phone already had the upgraded market as well, so I don't know what's up with these showing up.
A short story
At home, I have this big ol' gang of dogs. They all want me to throw the tennis ball. One of the dogs is a little smarter than the others. He has learned from experience the throw might be a fake out. The rest of the dogs NEVER learn and always go running off after the phantom ball. The smart one just stands there waiting and continuing to watch. (Or maybe he checks his Twitter feed; I'm not 100% sure.)
When I really do throw the ball, he is the one who always gets to it first.
The moral of the story is: Keep an eye on the smarter dog.
(PS... I think that damn dog just hacked my credit card... unless one of you guys just sent me 800 pounds of cubed Kobe beef...)
Just Bricked my Phone
I got this DM update and said yes , install, reboot , etc... The install "failed" and rebooted. Now I can't get past the Vibrant screen and logcat basically shows me a kernel panic/fail and keeps repeating itself.
I had rooted my phone and had Ryan's OCLF installed and configured. Any ideas how to get back to stock firmware and try again ?
What version were you coming from? 2.1? If so I bet the kernel failed updating and 2.1 and 2.2 kernels are not compatible with each other.
Coming from 2.1 ... hoping I can push a stock firmware image to my sdcard and boot into recovery - searching for links in the forum but no luck yet

Hey all,
Quick question. Does anyone know how often or how our phones query the server for update checks? Is the software first downloaded before asking us if we want to upgrade? Does the sync icon light up while it is downloading? Does our battery charge need to over x to before the software either downloads and/or notify us?
I'm curious as to how the entire process works.
Thanks.

I have an Evo, but I follow the tech news. Software updates are released in waves so that if there are issues with an update, they are isolated and they can stop sending them out. Essentially, the first wave are the guinea pigs. I'm not sure how they decide who gets them, but I'm pretty sure it's random. You will be notified on your own when you can grab the update. It starts on the 21st and everyone should have the update by the 25th. Of course, you can probably just find the update online once it's out and do it yourself:

When the update is available to your phone, it will download it silently in the background. Once the download is complete, you will get a notification that an update is ready to install. As long as you have enough battery left, you will have the option to install it. Otherwise you will be prompted to plug into your charger.
As far as the frequency your phone checks for updates, I'm not sure other than at boot time.
Sent from an Epic I haven't bricked yet.
Also, I believe the updates are 'pushed', which is to say, Sprint contacts your phone directly not vice versa.
Given how infrequent updates are, having your phone poll for them would be a wasted process.
Our phones already poll for app updates through the market and the update is hosted on googles servers.
I don't think it is too far fetched that our phones are notified somehow through this process?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
It would make sense, with the 'wave' method mentioned above, that it's just pushed. Thats the fun! Back when I used to odin to D*27 to let it OTA DI18, it would happen really randomly, anywhere from instant to half an hour... never waited longer though, as its open to request, I just 'check for updates' of it was taking too long. Either way, unless you are one of the first wave, I would wait for XDA's Devs to look over the one from the first wave, and then DL their update... Im sure they will get one from the first wave... I will probly Odin to DI18 tomorrow night and wait, just for fun, as I do agree there is an attraction to that, kind of like when you get a surprise PS3 update that gives you some new unlocked functionality... reminds you why you bought it... course with this phone, we would feel that way if it were more timely, but hey, theres the future...

A software update to EB13 (Froyo) is available for the Samsung Epic 4G via Google OTA. Customers will become eligible for the
upgrade across a 4-day period based on their status with the Google servers. 67% of users are currently on SW DI18 so the first
OTA package we will publish will be an upgrade from DI18 – Froyo (DL11). We will be publishing hop upgrades from DG27 – Froyo
and DI07 – Froyo as soon as possible following the initial release
OTA Duration time is dependent on current device usage: 10 – 25 minutes, with installation time of 6-8 minutes
from the leaked .pdf from the first day, after the screenshots. thanks to whoever leaked it! DI18 is priority, you cant really sit on the older versions, I think those 'hop updates' are for old stock sitting around with the old versions waiting to be activated. Oh and the DL11 is a typo, they just cut and pasted from a previous release most likely...

maybe it will be automatically updated with a script when they start the ota's. idk, just a guess.
UPDATE PROCESS: The software update will be delivered as a wireless download (over-the-air, or OTA) in waves starting on February 21. All Samsung Epic 4G owners should have access to the download by the end of the week (Feb. 25).
Once your Epic is in the queue and eligible to download the update, a message will be pushed to your device saying that a software update is available. If you are not yet in the queue and you attempt to check for a software update manually, you will receive a message saying “no upgrade is available”. This simply means your device isn’t in the current wave of updates.
All customers should have access to the update by the end of the week (Feb. 25).
just got this off sprint site.... so phones dont check... pushed, and you cannot even manually trigger it... I even Odin'd to DI18 a bit ago, to see if I could trigger it activating DI18... no dice. OK... whos in wave 1... cough it up!
Whosdaman,
Just curious, can I ask why contact you first? Are you aware of something I haven't read?
I'm rooted and rommed, but watching hubby's unrooted (won't let me touch or mess and screw up his!! Doesn't believe me I can fix whatever I break!!) Epic.
Really do appreciate someone looking out for everyone. I am going to hold on his until I see some positive results, because I can't fix what Sprint breaks!!
