I've posted a question in a previous thread to ask if any of you can notice some distortion in your earpiece while talking. I have got a couple of answers that earpiece is working just fine and there is no distortion.
My device was having this problem so i went to SE service center and asked them to repair it. They took my phone for a week and i just got it back and i still have the same problem !!!!
I called them and talked to SE guy who asked me to go to SE Service Center again and that's what i did. I started Sony Ericsson Service test for earphone and the distortion was very obvious. The SE guy told me that this is a common problem in all X10s in Service Test for earphone due to the very high volume.
I want someone to run the earphone service test and confirm that he got the distortion or not.
To go to the Service Test menu, from you lock screen press the following keys:
menu, back, back, menu, back, menu, menu, back
and select Service test you will find Earphone press it and set volume to maximum.
Ive had 3, all same.

sorry , but i can't understand what do u mean by 3
Just tried it, there's definitely distortion at max volume, but it's also really loud...if I pull it away from my ear or turn the volume down a bit, it sounds fine.
There's no distortion during phone calls, but it's also a lot quieter...

I just can't hear my phone when people talk, I have to have a quiet library handy so I can hear them. So any static I can't notice.

Thank you all for replying
I guess it's a common problem and it's stopping SE from rasing the in-call volume any more. maybe there will be a software solution but you can't except anything from SE these days
You hit the nail on the head there. Reduced volume = reduced distortion.

i recently got my gf an x10 for her birthday, whenever she makes a call the person receiving the call hears loud hissing noises like someone is blowing into the mic, and a bit of an echo of there own voice. I searched around the forums but noone else seems to be experiencing this so assumed it was a faulty phone and i went and got it replaced.
However the problem still persists on the new handset. After much messing with the phone i deduced its the contact between hand and handset thats causing the hissing.
The simplest way to reproduce the annoying noises is to just rub your finger lightly up and down the back of the X10 (sounds wierd i know), remember theres no noticable sound impact on the X10, just any phone receiving a call from one will hear the sound.
Just curious if anyone else has experienced this or knows of a way to prevent it, currently half the conversations i have with her are inaudiable because when ever shes moving around (ie walking down the street) all i hear are loud hissing noises. (this is not wind blowing into the mic, iv done many tests)
thx for reading. Mike.
I have the same problem with. my gf when I call her she told me that there is annoying. voice and echo

i don't have any noises or echos.
but now as you mention, the decoupling of the mic is far from optimal.
when touching the back of the (white) X10, you can hear noises on the other side of line. (no other phone is that sensitive.)
can anyone confirm, that this is better with the rubberized back, black edition ?
Easy solution guys, just dump your girlfriends. Problem solved.

LMAO. Girlfriends are using the phone and boyfriends are getting worried.
Anyone know of a way to turn the sensitivity of the mic down, she loves the phone, so doesn't want a different one.
also she as the black rubberized edition, so im guessing it doesn't make a difference
me 2 i have the black one help guys
i do not have the hissing sound but echoes...as if the other party is using speaker phone which she is not... and the sentence is cut off here n there..help!!! losing heart on my 20 days old X10...
i have a similar problem, but i the contact i'm talking to wont hear an echo if i'm using the included headset. i also have the white x10.
I found the same problem today, calling two different people. I found the echo and hiss is very noticeable when I put the call volume up to max, or very high. As soon as I reduce the call volume it goes.
The reason I used to have the call volume very high is I could not hear the other callers, but realised I have to (and can - without pressing any buttons!) press the phone quite close to my ear, this way the volume is good enough at half the level and the callers then do not hear teh hiss or echo.
Hope this made sense and helps?
i have the same prob . how can solve the prob???
Echo during phone call - Solution
Hi,
there are 2 solutions to the echo problem mentioned.
Firstly make sure you do not cover the mic hole on the side of the phone with your hand or finger etc.
Secondly, SE has released a SW version 016 for some (not all) of their customers which is supposed to fix that problem.
Apparantly that SW version is not available to all SW versions (customers) yet, but will either come soon or the fix will be included in the first maintenance release.
I have had my X10 on 014 and after the upgrade to 016 the problem was gone.

I know that this topic comes up again and again but wht has nothign been done about it? When I call SE they don't acknowledge that there is a problem - has nobody else contacted them about this?
My phone is not rooted - has anyone who has rooted their phone increased the volume? Is there a solution anywhere out there?!

I was going just say WHAT???? I can't hear you! but that would just be mean
I'm up to 026 rooted and the volume seems the same to me. Only good news is that using a Bluetooth earpiece solves the problem ... now if only I could use the BT to voice dial.
the actual volume of the speaker is pretty decent, like when your in test mode you can hear a significant difference. I guess some idiot at SE decided to keep it low.

I bought a BT earpiece so I can use while driving and it does make the volume much better....I cant get the BT to "activate" voice dialling on the phone - should it be able to? Have you manage that? The voice dialer standard app on phone is a joke I still therefore have to dial the person I want to call and once that is started then the BT takes over....have you managed anything better than that?

Yes I know I have seen this....so why oh why oh why when SE must/should be aware of low volume havent they increased it instead of messing around with non-essential things like Creatouch/Timescape?
I just wish they would acknowledge the problem and let people know either they were going to fix it and if they cant fix it then i can get rid of the phone! Sp far they just seem to pretend it doesnt have a problem eg when calling customer services they say that nobody has reported any problems....
I have contacted se about this too. It is mt biggest stumbling block with this otherwise sound phone. Come on se FIX IT!
ear piece volume is for sure lot less than many phones I used. Much less than SE's own phones. I almost can't talk on it in noisy streets or I take out my bluetooth head set.
Unfortunately, I love the phone so much that I decided to adjust to several issues X10 has. When I first got the phone I had so many little issues with the phone that bothered be but over time I adapted myself to it

Android 1.6 doesn't do BT voice dial.
It might sound kinda stupid but make sure that the ear speaker is direct to your ear, which means that your ear will be covered by half the phone and not all of it ( unlike my previous nokia phones) pretty stupid I know but I hope it helps.

Sort of depends on the conditions you use it under. If you're in a conference room it would work better than if you're in a shopping mall.
I've had mobile phones since 1988 (22 years of wireless) and I can tell you that the X10 has the worst in call volume I've ever experienced.
I imagine that somebody at SE must be aware of this.

Count me in. But like I mentioned earlier I love the phone so much for it's style and so many other things that I decided to adapt to it. I use bluetooth in noisy places. I normally hate having bluetooth hang on my ear in public. So, I put it in my pocket and take it out when I get a call. Fortunately, there are not many calls I need to answer right away.
I too have this problem so I bought SE's MW600, well worth it but I hope they sort this problem soon.
My K800i had a fantasic earpiece sound quality and volume but my previous SE C905 was terrible and the X10i is worse still!

+1...It's a bit quieter than most other phones I've had, but conversations are still fine.
The way everyone's talking about it, it seems like a huge deal. I've heard that (it was about the Evo 4G because many people complain about call quality on it too) when custom ROMs can be booted, the devs can increase in-call volume.

maybe they said nobody has reported the problem because they couldn't hear the callers either. sorry, just couldn't resist that!
anyway, i do agree that this is the worst phone i've ever had in terms of caller volume. unless i'm in a quiet room, it's utterly useless. the only remedy i've found so far is to use the speaker phone, which is not a good solution at all!
while i do love the X10, if the issue still isn't resolved with the 2.1 upgrade, i may just go back to my old phone, because while the X10 is indeed quite smart, it sure as hell isn't much of a phone!
How can people honestly say this is not a problem?
We all have the in-call volume set to max and it's barely acceptable, set to half-way/normal which on many other devices would be sufficient and it's hardly audible unless you're in a library. Setting my Blackberry's in-call volume to max actually hurts my ears it's so loud! But ideally that's the kind of dynamic range in volume I'd like to see, no...hear SE implement.
If I had to guess, I would say that SE was having trouble finding a balance between finding an acceptable in call volume level and having a problem with echoing in calls. The louder the speaker is, the more susceptible it is to echo. There is no other reasonable explanation as to why its so low. Especially in a flagship phone. As a device, this phone is stellar, but as a phone, its pretty bad.
The last post basically echos my latest communique with SE. Their reply is below:
Dear Sir/Madam,
Thank you for contacting the Sony Ericsson support centre regarding your X10
Andriod 2.1 is due for release within Q3 of 2010, this may be subject to change however.
This should resolve the audio issues you have explained.
Kind Regards,
Stephanie Purvis
Sony Ericsson UK Customer Services
Looks like they know but are not too bothered about it! Certainly does not appear to be a priority............................
I just read a thread from other firum in Taiwan.
People said the low earphone volume can be improved by engineering mode.
Here are the steps.
1. Make sure your X10 is in Screen-Lock.
2. press button as the following sequence
m b b m b m m b
m: menu button b: back button
3. Then you can chose "service test" --> "Earphone"
adjust it by the volume button.
I had no problem of low earphone volume before.
So this is just for those who encountered this issue.
If this works, this problem can be solved by firmware setting.
[Update]
After test, this just shows that earphone issue is not from hardware.
Wish SE solve this by 2.1 update.
I think it's easy (maybe not easy for SE guys... )
Adjusted the volume, but unfortunately no one to call right now. Will see if it works soon.

Excellent post
you can download 'any cut ' from the market and just add a shortcut to the desktop.
any cut > new activity > earphone
I dint think it fixes the.low call volume problem though.
I think in R2BA026, the Media Volume Setting is already at it's maximum. Mine does when I opened it and I don't remember adjusting it...

Yeah.. too bad they won't save it..
Maybe u need root for that
I can adjust the in-ear volume while calling. Just call yourself, keep talking while pressing the volume up button. Some bar saying in-ear volume will be going up.
Also, didn't it say media volume instead of in ear in engineering mode.
If you can't get into engineering...I couldn't also, but then I noticed that I wasn't pressing the menu button(left), but the home(middle) button...

Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
How'd you fix it?
(never mind) ... Why was it low in the first place?
Mine does this toodame happens to lock/unlock sound. I think it routes the sound to the call speaker instead of the rear speaker
Now that you mention it, I have the same. All my volume settings are set to Full and in sound options, I have selected to have sounds fr dial pad and for touch screen and for lock/unlock. I don't think they are redirected to call speaker because I don't hear sound there either.
Anyone found a solution without installing 3rd party app?
Ok, looked deeper into it and discovered that actually the only solution is the audio manager. It seems to be a must have as Android misses critical volume settings on its interface. That application is the only way to allow you to adjust the volume.
That's no excuse for HTC, Google or whoever is responsible for the Android OS or DHD. (really, who is responsible? I never thought that)
Going to give it a try myself as well.
Chefs, is there something that can be done on your end?
I use Sound Manager for this issue...happened to me twice already...
Other applications are responsible for this.
I too had faced this problem and suddenly the tones of dial pad were gone on my htc desire, it was only vibrating. The settings of Sound were all fine, still no tone. So being a tester I am, I backtracked and remembered what all I did.
It turned out when we install applications in Android we give them access to core functionalities of system. I had used Fring application prior in the day, where I had used Fring's Dialer pad. I logged into fring again went to dialer pad, increased volume and indicator said "Volume" unlike any other indicator of volume in HTC Desire. After increasing the volume, I logged out and went to phone dialer again, and tones were back. So our applications are responsible for turning down volume. A centralized application which controls all application can come in handy and there are few in android market available.
Hope this helped
I have deleted some apps from my phone following this problem but seemed to make no difference... today however the volume on dialer has returned to normal??? But also the noises on the qwerty pad now sound like an old fashioned typewriter??? My 4 yr old was messing with phone earlier but checked settings I can think of and nothing has changed... confused!
yea i got the same problem tried emailing HTC they dont know anything about it they just replied with
Kindly go to Menu>settings>sounds>check:
audible touch screen
audible selections
screen lock sounds
:/
thanx for XDA or i would've never sort it out
Hi
Can anyone help?
This is annoying more than stopping me using the phone but when i want to make a phone call the noises of the tone dialing when you press a number are very very faint, have to hold it to my ear to hear it, it wasnt like this yesterday??????
Have checked all the sound settings and volume and they are all high/max but still no joy, spoken to HTC who I could not understand, sounded spanish and he could not do it either...
Keypad volume is linked to the media volume, turn the media volume up in the sound settings and you should be good.
Already done that..... its on max and phone button noise is barely audible....
Just noticed its not just the dialing tones its also the little tick noise you get when you press any icon on the screen, thats quiet too
Have you dropped your phone over night? Is it running stock?
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
My phone is standard.... has a few apps etc but thats it.
I did drop it a few weeks ago, no visible damage, but im quite sure the dialer noise and click when you tap the screen has just happened.... its not gone its just very very quiet... tried ticking the button to switch it on and off and that has not done anything either, HTC said they didnt know but to do a hard reset
Have you used the fm radio? Sounds odd but I used it once on either the desire or desire hd and when the volume on that was down so was the system volume. Stab in the dark
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
Ive never used the radio on this phone, i even removed the otter box case to see if that was muffling the noise and its not.... looks like a hard reset then!

Just download an app called Quick Settings and adjust the System Volume to max and you can hear the screen taps and other sounds. I had this problem and that app solved it.
