hi,
i have just used jf updater to update to 1.51 (both the radio and the rom) the update process went smooth with no errors....
however after the restart many applications crash and force close including core applications such as acore, gmail, gm, ... etc
the phone does not seem to be stable anymore, it does not sync often.
any help?
had the same problem today... i just reformatted, re-rooted, and reflashed everything. all solutions ended no where. so hopefully someone has a better solution here.
just try a backup then wipe and see if it fixes it
same here, i also did apps2sd at the same time, and i thought apps2sd was the reason for the **** up, so i just wiped and now apps are running from my phone and everyhthing seems to work normally. i'm still not sure what caused it...
going through the whole rooting and apps2sd process all over again????
same here crash, crash, crash.. lol apps to sd 1.51 doing a wipe now ugh
If it helps anyone here, I recently upgraded fine from RC33 to 1.51 HOWEVER I did NOT use app2sd program. I did mine originally using Lucids script method. Which on RC33 was a script that would copy the data and then the cache over to the SD. Then after I upgraded to 1.51 everything worked fine and normal, no hassle.
So my suggestion is this, have EVERYTHING run off the phones memory, Then use lucids script, a alternate way to apps on sd. Then see if everything works fine after you moved it over, also turn on usb debugging, fixed my apps that needed root access.
im also having the same problem after updating to jf 1.5.1 can anyone confirm if they are still having probs after wiping and using apps to sd? did using lucids script instead work? i just dont wanna go through the hassle of wiping and not know which one to use so my apps can stop randomly force closing.
It seems that you all are upgrading from an old version of a2sd to a newer better version of a2sd, many apps don't work correctly unless they are reinstalled when you changed builds due to them not being registered correctly
I would reccomend backing up your apps and then wiping your system/sd folder before you flash to a major upgraded build.
wipe then update then wipe again.
Then boot into your new updated build. Install a few apps then use you prefered a2sd method and verify with the a2sp apk located in the development section that everything worked right.
If the a2sd apk says that tou need to prepare your card for a2sd, you may noy done it right. However if you use lucidrems method, itmay not be compatable.
Check the system/app folder and see what's in it Same with data/app. If the few programs you installed are not there then yay your a2sd is working check system/sd/app to verify.
Ill help out when I can, pm me or ask your questions here. Ill be monitoring this thread.
Good luck
I wiped my phone and installed everything again...everthing was fine until I rebooted my phone and upon start up toggle settings force closed and open home aswell. Same problem I had before....so far nothing else has attempted to force close but I'm guessing I didn't solve the problem and await for it to start crashing like it did before. Sorry I'm still new at this stuff so bare with me...
Toggle settings WILL crash, You need to uninstall that one and redownload the "Cupcake" version of it. That will fix that one.
Now that your 1.51 You need apps that work with cupcake. =)
I do have. The cupcake version....all my apps rondomly just keep crashing....I either hit wait or just force close it
I have also been experiencing force closing issues. The weird part is that I dont have the apps to sd installed on my phone. My phone lags sooo much now, especially in the market and even worse in the browser. Sometimes I wait up to 50 seconds before the browser starts up. Everything is just blank for the time. I get force closes randomly for maps, IM, browser and cupcake toggle settings before I uninstalled. Also, when I exit anything with my home button, it goes to my homescreen but takes a good 10-15 seconds to load my apps on the screen. It just freezes.
Since I've had the phone, Ive already wiped 5 or 6 times. I am so over wiping and reinstalling all my apps and putting everything where I like it. Anyone have any ideas? Please???
AH! That issue I know about, I just recently upgraded from my 2 GB Kingston to a 4GB Sandisk. The Sandisk seems to be a faster card. I know the kingston was a slower one, which lagged behind giving me ALOT of the wait/force close ones. This was due to the speed of the memory card kinda choking out I would say. I always hit wait which did the trick. But when I had alot going on, lag sucked. I dont get it very often now, which says the SD is faster. But this might be the cause of your issues too?

Is anyone else having this issue? I'm going crazy with all of the crashing and waiting. Sorry to be impatient.
Like I said, I did till I changed out my SD card.

I forgot to mention that I have a 8gb 6 class already in place.
I also have an 8gig class 6 card so that can't be it.
so, iam still having force close issues on many applications. also it seems that the phone is very slow now.
any thoughts?
Hi All,
I had installed Bluetooth file transfer, moved the app to SD card using the android 2.2 A2SD capability for the application and enabled automatic application.
Today morning, I saw that there was a notification that an update was installing itself for the Bluetooth File transfer app. I clicked on it and it took me to the market page. I didnt think it was a big deal and left it alone.
However, it has been in the same status for about 12-13 hours and I noticed that my phone was considerably slower than usual and was also losing battery rapidly.
I checked the apps running and saw that BTF app was still in the installing stage. So I restarted the phone. Still the same status. I uninstalled the application, in the hope that it would be gone now, but still when I go to the markets>download page, I can see that the application is still trying to install itself.
My phone is still a little bit slow I think. Please help me out with the issue. How do I uninstall the app totally and make sure that it is not slowing / degrading my phone's performance.
Thanks
Sankar
go into settings, apps, all, android market.
Force stop and erase data and cache.
It should work
Thanks for that.
I will try that.
That worked. Many thanks again.

I've had the phone for about a week now, and it's been really crash-prone and unstable for the first couple of days. I previously had an HD7 for 4 weeks, so I immediately set up my DVP like I had the HD7 set up.
It was so buggy, I hard reset at least a couple of times in those few days. My most recent hard reset was on Sunday, and lo and behold, I didn't experience any crashes for 4 days!
That started me thinking. The difference between the previous hard reset and the current hard reset was that I hadn't loaded many apps or any mp3s yet - so I loaded the same amount of MP3s as I had before (about 8gb) and immediately any new programs started crashing! In fact, I think just about anything that wrote to the disk exhibited errors, from newly downloaded and installed apps to existing apps which does disk I/O. The marketplace crashed all the time while downloading or installing apps.
My best guess as to the cause of the issue is that the SD card is corrupting data. As long as you are using the internal storage, everything runs fine - but once data is written to the SD card, things are getting corrupted. I'm not sure about this, it's just a guess.
At the OS level, the internal storage is combined with the SD card into a single logical disk - AKA JBOD in RAID terms. I'm not sure about the OS-level algorithm it uses to determine whether or not to save to internal vs SD card, but my guess is that it writes to the internal first, then when that is exceeded, it writes to the SD card. Even after removing some MP3s, I still had crashes, so I'm guessing that it doesn't overwrite the same sectors that previously held data until all the "fresh" sectors have been used (ie it was still writing to the SD card).
If this is the case, then the culprits could be either A) Dell's crappy SD card drivers corrupting the data or B) a crappy quality SD card corrupting the data. Given their recent QC issues i'm inclined to think it's B - but I hope it's A because that would imply a software fix as opposed to having to replace hardware.
Either way, I'll write a program to test my hypothesis: It'll create a test files of a specific size and then read them back and check that the test data is correct.
Thoughts? Has anybody else noticed similar behavior after filling up their storage?
I suspected the SD card as well, which is why I included the remaining storage space in the options in the poll at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=891295
That being said, some others have said that doing a system reset on their phone did not fix the crashing problems. There are 2 major unknown variables here of course - when the phone is using the SD card vs. internal memory, and whether everyone is experiencing the same type of crashing.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if there were multiple causes for the all the crashes people are experiencing - most likely the SD card may be responsible for some of those, while other issues are causing more crashes.
Impossible to tell at the moment, though. But perhaps the reason why people associated wifi with crashing was that they were using the wifi to load more data than they were over 3G?
I've thought about the apps too. AP mobile is one that is involved on my list. Shazam, yelp, where, are others. I an make my hd7 crash with each of them. However, that does not eliminate sd card. Optimal read/write access speed will probably impact crash, lag, and performance.
Based on this thread it sounds like it's probably more of a driver issue.

I've used those apps on the HD7 and I don't think they ever crashed it - not nearly as often as the DVP crashes.

That and also at a much higher rate than 3G typically.

I don't know if I would agree with that. I would hope that drivers would be the same on all devices. To have 1 fail and 20 not fail....is it driver? I would be curious to know what the failure rates would be. Sure we see alot of complaints here on this forum....but there is not a whole lot of traffic about failure of the DVP. All in All, I'm happy with the DVP. I also have a HD7...and I'm happy with that. I have them both sitting here...and when I make a decision to use a phone of my choice...I've chosen the DVP.
With all things being equal, if I get into a fight, the DVP can be used as a weapon.
I've used up quite a bit of storage but the only time I seem to get a crash is when I enable WiFi, otherwise my DVP seems to run stable.

I have the same results, I went crash free for 2 days without WiFi I wanted to test it and turned it back on and it crashed within a few min.
I have a replacement coming from Dell but I doubt they will have it fixed. I'm hoping it would be something that can be fixed by an update.
Mine crashes too!!
I too am experiencing many of the issues that have been posted on this forum (crashing w/wo wifi, while in MP, or when an app needs data from the internet). Twice I have reached in my pocket, hit the power button to bring up the lock screen and nothing happens - just a blank screen. Hence had to pull the battery and reboot.
A couple of other things I have noticed that I am not sure I have seen on the forums. Does anyone else have a DVP where the top left edge and the bottom right edge are not flush with the bottom of the phone? It is slight, but I noticed it on day one. Also, I have a heck of a time with the accelerometer sticking. Sometimes it refuses to go back into portrait mode. No mater how I turn and twist it (360 deg).
Anyone else experience this?
I used to use the power button to get to the unlock screen, but after fumbling with it a few times in the dark, I switched to flipping out the keyboard, which does the same thing. And while it did often take multiple presses of the power button to wake the DVP, I have never had to pull the battery.
I've had the DVP since November 8th, and had it crash on my severely enough for a battery pull maybe 3-4 times tops. This is both on the "engineering" phone and the "retail" phone. The only difference I have with you guys - and this is pretty significant - is that I hacked my SD card pretty much within the first couple of days of getting it. I've upgraded to a SanDisk class 2 16GB.
Now, I haven't particularly filled it up; in fact, I have tons of space free. But, I'd like to set some facts straight:
1) The DVP has no internal storage. Just a few megs (~16MB or so) just so the OS can run if you pull the SD card. Nothing new here; we've seen this during the first days of the SD card hack thread.
2) If you fill up your storage, and applications request for IsolatedStorage, the request will most likely fail if you have (close to) zero storage free. If applications don't check for that, it will probably crash. I don't know if this is necessarily happening, since I don't have a crashing device to observe this behaviour, but that's one hunch. Some of you have said that the HD7 did not crash when you filled up the storage, which might throw my theory out the window.
3) The SD card used in the DVP is also a SanDisk - I tend to trust them with storage reliability. If it is indeed a driver issue, then Microsoft might have some share in the blame as well - MS writes drivers for the OEMs for WP7.
What we need to do is scientifically reproduce the issue. Instead of general data corruption, another thing to check is to see what happens as storage gets filled up.

I attempted to do just that - I wrote a storage test app and ran it on my DVP, and it encountered no issues.
The app wrote test data, filling up 95% of available free space (around 13.3GB), then read it back in and verified the data. I'm now fairly confident that it's not the SD card or the storage drivers that are responsible for the crashing.
I did however, encounter issues trying to download the Rise of Glory game. I had turned wifi off, but it's large enough that it requires wifi or sync in order to download and install. Once I turned wifi on and retried the download, the phone crashed on me.
Let's see if we can verify the wifi + marketplace issue:
1) make sure phone wifi is off
2) connect DVP to computer, run Zune
3) via zune sync, verify that you can install a large game or app on your phone. It has to be one which you haven't downloaded before, as I don't think you can force zune to reinstall an app it knows you already downloaded.
4) disconnect the phone
5) verify the game runs correctly
6) uninstall the game on the phone
7) turn phone wifi on
8) go into marketplace on the phone
9) reinstall the same game and see if you have any issues with marketplace while downloading (freezing/hanging/etc)
10) if everything's still ok, verify that the game runs correctly
@Zaijian
I tried reproducing your flow on my DVP and it didn't crash. But, what is strange is mine freezes (only twice so far) @ random right after playing and trying to get to some other app or switching between app. This tends me to side on the memory as being the culprit or some other component being the culprit. Most likely could be memory related and how WP7 manages to kill an app. Is there a memtest kind of thing we could run on this DVP?
I wrote a wifi transfer testing app and ran it overnight - it transferred 4GB over my wifi (from my desktop to the phone) correctly and without incident.
So, i've confirmed that:
A) there's nothing wrong with writing a single large file to the file system
B) there's nothing wrong with transferring data over wifi
My next tests will be:
1) simultaneously writing multiple large files to the file system
2) simultaneoulsy writing files to the file system and transferring data over wifi
3) some sort of memory test to see if memory is getting corrupted
WiFi seems to be the issue
Not much question that mine locks up when WiFi is turned on. I have been experimenting with this issue for the past few days and while having WiFi on causes random lock-ups, not having it on makes it run without any issues.
Fortunately, most of the areas I use my phone have good 3G coverage so WiFi acting up is not a deal breaker but I certainly hope they are able to fix this with the impending update.
One consideration is could there be an app we all have that uses WiFi that is causing trouble? Has anyone had issues with this from a fresh device? I seem to recall having it lock up early on before I put many apps on it.

My problems seem to occur when I'm going through the marketplace and downloading via wifi.
I verified with my test app that wifi can transfer a large amount of data without errors. This leads me to believe that the wifi itself is not the cause of the issues, but that wifi in combination with other factors may be the cause.

I thought so too but I left the WiFi on and rebooting without accessing Marketplace has been causing lockups as well. In fact, I just noticed it was locked up after a reboot 10 minutes ago and, sure enough, I left WiFi on. I didn't so much as unlock the screen after the reboot although I have also had it lock up while accessing Marketplace.

I'll test using wifi simultaneously with local disk I/O and see if that causes errors.
Ok, I only recently started having this problem but it has persisted across two ROMs and three wipes.
Several times an hour OpenFeint will popup onscreen unbidden with the screen that asks me to disable it or enable it. This happens even when I'm not playing a game and even when the phone is sitting on my desk and locked; I'll pick it up, unlock it and the screen will already be up waiting.
As I said I've used two different ROMs, first Swagged Out-Stock (Swag-On) and the latest version of MikG. I wiped Swagged and reloaded it only to have the problem again and then switched to MikG and still have it. I do have a handful of OF enabled games installed.
I've tried everything I can think of to stop this; deleted the OF folder, opened OF from a game and chose Remove Account from this Device and even used closeFeint (app I found on XDA) all for nothing. I've looked all over for a file tied to it and have used different task apps, autorun apps and the built-in battery monitor to try and track it down but no luck.
Has any one else run into this or can any one offer any help on how I might get rid of it? I know that I can remove all OF related games but I do play them (and have paid for one) and would like to keep them if at all possible.
Hi guys,
Has anyone noticed heavy lag and freezing when using the phone. I don't have a lot of apps installed and i have disabled most apps that i don't use and the phone is still giving me issues.
Any advice is appreciated. [emoji4]
I switched from RAZR MAXX HD and this phone is a space rocket in comparison to my old Droid. Have you tried factory restore? Then if it lags - I would try to return it to Moto.
Check CPU utilization. Maybe some app hangs on. I've noticed that noozy (music player) lags like hell when album is over and player remains in notification bar.

I have the same problem, I tried to removing as much as possible automatic start calling but often when I uncheck the receiver this puts me "failed" in Rom Toolbox, I have tried Xposed Auto Boot module, but I do not feel that it works.
But for me, I have a lot of app instaled and my UI is very modified (Nova Launcher, Gravity Box, various Widget), so I know why he lag, but I still find it overheating lot and that's what most do slow.
Hi, I am having same issue. My configs was same as you, @Trinytix, but I had uninstalled all of them because lag issues. And now I continue to have same lag issues. When I use the standard cam for five minutes it become freezy and lag and sometimes I lose some photos. All the time it is burning. Just stops to burn when I leave it without work about 30 minutes. I think the problem is the snapdragon 810 but in other foruns some say that the problems with this processor was fixed.
I've been having similar issues, I got really into theming (using nova prime) the last couple of months and at the end of January the phone started to really lag hard. A couple weeks ago I stopped being able to open any apps other than the phone and google's messenger. I tried to factory reset from settings and could not (device gets stuck un the power down sequence), so I went the recovery mode route. reinstalled a fraction of my apps, put back a much stripped down version of my theme, and things were mostly ok, if a little laggy. However, the phone insisted that there was no SD card (internal or external) despite there being a 64GB card, which would sometimes show up when viewed in settings, some apps (podcast addict) were able to access the internal memory, but others couldn't (cameras, sms, photos, music). Yesterday the keyboard ceased to launch for more than a split second at a time, and would not take any input (you would not believe how infuriating this is unless you've experienced it first hand). In an attempt to regain some functionality I started uninstalling everything that I don't consider vitally important (bus app, podcasts, messenger) couldn't get through more than 1 or 2 at a time because multiple windows would stack telling me processes like "motorola" "android" and "media" had stopped. I did succeed in stripping away all the automation apps and theming apps (tasker, nova, icon packs, etc). I can't even place a phone call on the first try.
Oh and to add insult to injury I have to darned green lines about 0.5cm wide now.
Looks like hw problem or system got corrupted. Try to re-flash whole system but if is hw...
