Phone never going to sleep - possible culprit - Galaxy S I9000 General

I have had problems with my phone sometimes refusing to sleep, causing my battery to drain..
today I think I found the culprit. Seems to be the stock email application that is the problem. After I stopped this the phone goes to sleep again.
Can anyone experiencing this problem verify? It could of course be other applications also.
I think I read something about a Samsung Email application. Is this available somewhere? For 2.1?

firstable you didn't tell us which app was the cause.
So which app was it?
I had something similar, but i knew because i ticked the option to stay on, problem is even after i exited the software, the phone remained on.
it was a bug in wifi scanner app on android market
so after going back in and ticked it off again, then the phone was able to go to sleep properly.
Samsung push email and IM come stock, it can be installed by going into Samsung App icon in your phone

BTW. I don't have any email applications in Samsung Apps
So what other email application with exchange sync is recommended?

odd, you should have it
the next best thing is TouchDown 2.0 but it's paid software
maybe some one can upload the samsung APK for the mail push and IM for you.
in the Apps section of the site, some one uploaded the full APK of all samsung apps
see if you can find the topic

if only there's an app in the market showing what's causing the phone not to sleep in details.
searched everywhere to no avail ):

JM7/8 + Voodoo and using WiFi causes the phone not to sleep.
What firmware do you have?

JM8 + Voodoo.. but when I killed the email application, the phone started to sleep again.. I haven't dared to start email since It's still sleeping when it should.

So I updated my EVO to fix the qik problem as mine would not sign in.
Now I noticed I have 100 percent awake time and the battery is draining fast.
Anyone have this problem? I searched around but didn't see a mention of it anywhere. I have not rooted yet at all just setup the phone then did the update. Had no problems before the update.

Well there is something going on with calendar as it will be 100 percent awake if calendar is running soon as I kill it with task panel the phone sleeps.

Today: 5 hours off the charger...5 hours awake time ONLY by the calendar. It's pretty impressive. I'm trying unchecking the calendar sync portion of gmail sync and charging it up to see how it performs for the second half of today. >.<
I killed the calendar app and my phone is finally going to sleep. This is probably it. I was getting the same result in spare parts. I installed auto task killer to kill the calendar in case I ever do open it.
I killed it also and the battery is performing MUCH better after a few hours by comparison. I wonder what it is about it that's not letting go properly.

I disabled the widget but that didn't stop it.
Looking into the logcat output, I saw on each sleep/wake cycle, 'SocialNetworkSyncmanager' acquiring a wakelock all the time (or, what seemed like a wakelock from the logcat).
Couldn't find exactly what that was, but noticed Footprints was running (wtf is that thing). Force closed that **** from Settings > Applications > Manage Applications, and now no 'SocialNetworkSyncManager' wakelock logcat messages.
Looking in Spare Parts, it seems that Calendar is no longer 100% of the partial wakelock time. Hrm. Will keep testing, but really need rundown time tests tomorrow to really get an idea of this works.
I had no idea footprints was part of the calendar. I never used it on windows mobile but I'll try disabling that too.
I am also running the widget but seems to make no diff if I use it or not.
I will start investigating the log cat see if matches the mentioned above.

Updated Facebook app not allowing phone to sleep

Just a heads up, with the new Facebook app my phone is not sleeping. When I log out of the app the phone does sleep when the screen is off. I'm running Baked Snack 1.1. I'm curious to see if it's just me, or if others are having the same issue.
Yep, I have noticed that as well. I mentioned it in the "There is a NEW FACEBOOK APP" (paraphrased) thread.
i installed it last night and this morning it i checked spare parts for partial wake items and facebook app was the highest, near 30%
i went into the facebook app and changed the update frequency; hopefully that'll fix it

Yeah when I reboot the phone it can go back to sleep, but if I log in to the Facebook app and back out it won't go back to sleep. Once I actually log out of Facebook the phone can sleep again.

Just checked Autostarts, and Facebook isn't set to start on any occasion other than your account settings being changed and the widget updating. Of course I have the refresh for notifications off, but it should never start itself.

If you have the widget on a homescreen it just reloads the service in short order. That and you really shouldn't have to kill something like Facebook to keep it from causing sleep issues, I understand it on "chat" apps (eBuddy, etc.), but not in a periodically updated app like Facebook. Seems like a bug to me.

I figured that that was the case. For whatever reason, it wants to start itself though. I have my updates set to "never" and notifications set to "off" now (just had the updates set to never before, still had notifications set to "on") Charging right now, so I can't check my partial wakes, but will update to see if that makes any difference.
Killing the app doesn't work work for me. I have to sign out of the app for it to stop killing the battery.

Known Apps that prevents phone to sleep.

I just like to compile a list of apps to stay away to preserve battery life by staying away apps that prevent your phone from going into sleep.
On the related subject, does the following apps and tools prevent phone from going to sleep. Can anyone verify?
Gmail auto-sync
Android Assistant with auto boost
Current widget
Spare Parts

Current widget is fine (even reporting every minute, drain is negligible), as is g-mail auto-sync as long as the interval is reasonable say hourly or longer, whats causing issues with spare-parts?
how do you reduce the intervals of auto-sync, because I couldn't find this option on my dhd.
For spare parts, I was just asking.
I heard the stock sms messaging app drains a lot of battery too, so I am switching to Go sms and see if it helps.

I'd say that the sms app draining is just another rumor. And for the first post none of the listed drain much. My settings everything on (3g) and not current widget but battery monitor widget and the average drain when idle around 3-5 mA with occasional peaks, due to data transfer while syncing. Also whatsapp on and various other background apps. Oh and CM7 latest build.
i really hate gmail
it gives huge spikes..
Where I check my Partial Wage Usage with SpareParts
I am getting these items
Dialler (Most usage)
UID 10030
Android System
Maps
GO SMS
Messaging
Calender Storage.
How can I disable Maps and the stock Messaging app? I don't why they are there since I have location turn off, gps turn off. And I turn off auto-retrieve and notification for my default messaging app.
What exactly is Dialler? what does it do?
Can anyone help. My phone is burning insane amount of battery during stand-by.
Spare parts? I think it works ondemand basis. I think YouTube is another app preventing sleep.

I haven't found any way to do it, people say you can change it when you factory reset, but otherwise, you can't
Maybe Gmail uses push, so updated on demand... (just guessing)
yes, auto-sync practically is push mail, but there isn't an option you can change it to fetch intervals instead?
I can use the stock email app, but its so crap!

If there's some strange drain by maps have you tried manually closing it from the settings-applications while you don't actually use it? That should do it.
thing is I killed it using android assistant and they just start pop up again.

Seriously if you use the "killed selected" option to terminate these processes it will just drain more battery. These processes will get restarted as soon as they are killed. That's the android way. I am already thinking dumping this function in my app - Android Assistant. The reason I let it stay is there are still some android 2.1 users and they need this feature.
If you are thinking about saving battery, root your phone and uninstall all unneccessary battery-draining apps
or use the normal way to save battery: turn off gps, bluetooth, wifi, lower screen brightness etc.(and these are also available in Android Assistant )
I un-installed maps and im good to go since i use Co-pilot
No problems with titanium backup pro

Email app battery drain - FIXED

Everyone,
just thought I would share this with you. I had discovered a problem in the native Email app with Exchange ActiveSync account. If a connection was lost a battery drain occurred which did not stop unless you killed the service, restarted your phone or put the connection back (a partial wake lock was not released in the sync service).
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=9307
I have been in discussions with Google developers about this for a long time and they were not able to find or track down the bug. I managed then to compile the Email app myself, debug it, find the problem and fix it.
Google finally confirmed the bug...
You can see the symptoms explained in post #77.
At the end of the issue you can see my analysis and how the code was fixed.
Anyway, find the latest Email app below so you can download it.
The Email app version is 2.3.5r1 (latest Git repository version of Gingerbread 2.3.5r1)
The changes done
- Fixed battery drain (wake lock released properly)
- Calendar synchronization syncs all historic events (not only 14 days old and newer)
Installation notes
Since Email app is a system application you cannot just install it and replace the old one. The only way is to have a rooted phone and delete the old /system/app/email.apk (make a backup of course).
Reboot your phone and then install the new Email.apk. It is suggested to remove the accounts first otherwise you can get a FC.
That's great work Jacob!
This bug should exist on all gingerbread roms, no?
Should I just installed it or replace the original one with root explorer?
Can not synchronize ALL messages, maximum period is month!

Yes, a standard behavior of the Email app. I could bypass that too if you need. It's a shame that both Calendar and Email period of sync cannot be setup properly (whatever the user might desire)
Great news, thank you very much!!!
Will definitely test this evening .
Yes, ability to sync all mail would be nice, too, if it's not a problem for you .
This is great, good job.
I experimented the same issue and noone seemed to believe me. Well done.
EDIT: btw im a galaxy s cyanogen mod user, maybe you could post this in a more general forum
I'm not knowledgeable about these things, but how would someone go about getting this fix implemented into CM7? I'm also a Galaxy S CM7 user who has suffered from this issue and I've had to resort to using Moxier Mail as a remedy. If I install this fixed .apk, will it just get overwritten once I flash the next CM7 nightly? It would be great if it could be integrated into CM7.
Works very well on Samsung GalaxyS-CM7, thanks a lot!
One question though, the maximum sync period is one month, whereas in the CM7 client it can be set to unlimited (for email at least).
I also made a zip-file to flash this new email.apk. Made for galaxy S CM7, but I guess it should work on any CM7...
3h ago exchanged Email.apk and so far good. Switching to Flight produces 2mA drain. Synchronizing corporate mail and Contacts/Calendar works normally with no issues so far .
niiiiiceeeeee!!!!
but is there any way to get the app skaled when changing the devices-density???
it's been workin' with this one:

but your version keeps beein small while changin
thx in advance...
Hi jakubklos,
I'm using airplain mode every night when I go to sleep and being aware of this annoying bug I usually kills the EMail app and stops all it syncs.
From now I can go to sleep knowing I won't be losing 10% or more of my battery while sleeping.
You're great man!
BTW, Beats me what takes Google so much time to fix it themselves.
genius, thanks jakubklos
Is this the same email app for sense roms or is it only ASOP that is effected by this issue?
Also, Way to go on showing google up!

Whatsapp notification woes driving me crazy!

So after being a long time apple user and long time iTunes hater ... I managed to sell my iphone 4 and bought a samsung galaxy S4, did the same for my other half...
Keep in mind, this is a brand new, no-root, default phone.
The issue basically is notifications, for whatsapp ( at the moment since I haven't set up anything else that requires push, besides gmail). The issue is once I turned the screen off, either manually or by itself. whatsapp notifications randomly stop arriving until I turned on the screen, completely close the app and open it again, the same goes for 2 other devices ( 3 in total), this happens with wifi or mobile data
Device #1. new s4,
Device #2 new s4
Device #3 Samsung galaxy young running 4.1.2 JB.
Now, device #3 belongs to a friend of mine who told of these issues a couple of months ago, however I did pay attention as I just figured it was network connection or wifi or whatever be it.
I've googled the hell out of this and it is apparently an android issue:
it's not telco related in my case, because i had NO ISSUES on my iphone 4 nor my best half's 4s.
Anyway, hopefully someone here has been through something similar and been able to fix it? I've searched the forums and there's apparently a widespread issue, but not fix as of 4.2.2?

Hi,
I just recently switched to a samsung galaxy s4 ( two actually, one for me,
one for GF), before that we used iphone 4 and 4s, never had an issue with
whatsapp notifications until I switched this passed friday. The issue is
once the phone goes into sleep mode, be it mobile data or wifi, I have to
force close the app and open again to receive notifications that I got
hours ago if I don't continously check.
I've googled the hell out of it and found your FAQ, as well as plenty other
sites with the same issue except no solution.
From your FAQ:
1. tried re-installing directly from direct download link (
http://www.whatsapp.com/android/current/WhatsApp.apk) and not from play
store
2. tried rebooting.
3. notifications are set properly
4. google+ is disabled ( hangouts) ( tried enabling it, same result)
5. Wifi is set to always on.
Note this is on stock, brand new phones and apparently it's a wide spread
issue:

Sadly, both
Do you lock the screen while whatsapp is open? Or do you choose whatsapp and then lock the screen?
If whatsapp is still running and on the screen, and you lock the screen, it's like the app just stops checking.. I've had this with multiple phones and its a whatsapp problem, not the phone.

No, the opposite. For me, whatsapp only worked and checked for msgs if i closed the app and then locked the screen. I would usually come back to the homescreen or something. But if i locked over whatsapp, it would stop checking or take a really long time.
But since you say you've done both, I'm kinda stumped.

Currently trying to installing .763, updated from .762, but whatsapp servers are probably getting busted as can't even verify my number.
Bro install Whatsapp+.
Google and download the apk, install and see if it helps.
If not, the only way is to root the S4 and install push notification fixer from play store. It modifies andriod to check for msges every 5mins. That will solve your problem for sure.

Hey mate,
I've probably tried all apps or methods by insanity to try getting this problem fixed. Unfortunately, nothing positive turned out.
Now I'm trying to off my screen when whatsapp is open, however, I still think it's unbelievably stupid to do so even if it works to get push notification. How can I go back to whatsapp whenever i wanna put the phone back in my jeans pocket? It then seems whatsapp would become the new homescreen?!?!?
Anyone got a real solution to this???
Also having this problem. Screen off, screen on - sometimes whatsapp just doesn't want to receive/send messages. Other times it's working properly.
Have you guys disabled Samsung Push? Have you disabled any system apps at all? Also, do you have the problem even when your phone has a good signal?
I'm also trying to find out the reason for this problem.

I do disable some system app like weather, finance and stuff like those. To me, what I can confirm is the independence of problem from the signal strength since I've been using the same service provider before upgrading to Jelly Bean and there used to be problem free with the push notification.
This is the result I got last night:
- open whatsapp -> close whatsapp -> homescreen -> screen off = no push
- open whatsapp -> close whatsapp -> free ram -> screen off = no push
- open whatsapp -> screen off = push
Conclusion:
- it is not related to free ram
- it is the problem that the andriod system turn off the app upon screen off (or sleep)
Plus.
I tried installing Push Notification Fixer to introduce "heartbeat" to maintain the connectivity, unfortunately, it DOES NOT work in my case.
Let's keep in view the development. At least we are not alone and hope either Whatsapp or Google can fix this.
Check out this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2357417
It's a thread which guides you how to disable some allegedly useless google services in order to save battery life when idle. It works, but I think it might have been what's caused my whatsapp to go crazy. I even asked in the thread and some others have the same problem.
But if most other people in this thread haven't disabled said google services, that doesn't make any sense.
Mate. Trust me i know this issue exist on all andriod. i googled the hell out of it because i quarrelled with my partner a few times due to delay in replies. its just the way the kernel is written for stock andriod. you can try everything but it wont work. your only solution is to root and install push notification fixer from play store.

This isn't an issue with android it's an issue with whatsapp. Every android phone I've ever owned has had this issue with whatsapp. Whatsapp need to update their app so it still notifies if it was the last app open whilst the screen locks.
I just press home after I reply and let it lock its second nature to me. The bug is in whatsapp where if it is the last displayed whilst screen lock notifications don't work. You could try changing the conversation tone that might help.

That's wrong... It was perfectly fine, instantly receiving whatsapp messages in my phone no matter what. Something I've changed caused it to stop working.
My problem isn't only the notifications, it's the actual whatsapp messages aswell. Something killed the Whatsapp wakelocks, now my whatsapp isn't causing any wakelocks and when the phone is idle it does not check for messages.
