[Q] Help with xwJM8 firmware - Galaxy S I9000 General

Hi everyone i am now running firmware 19000xxjph it seems a bit weird so want to go and try I9000XWJM8 which is 2.1 and im going to use lag fix, the problem i have is i have three files to use in odin the pit file, a code_i9000xwjm8.tar.md5 and a MODEM_i9000xxjm4.tar.md5 file but i dont know which one to use in which part of odin..
I was running another 2.1 firmware before but launcher pro really messed it up so i had to find another to use as i couldnt find the original one i got from a kies update, this firmware was really good and fast.
Can people please help me and also tell me if this jm8 is worth bothering with or if there is another that is smooth and fast with no problems.
Thanks XDA your the men !!!!!

There's a really good guide in the development forum.
Just flashed JM8 myself last night

[Q] How do I go back to stock JFD?

Hello,
Sorry if this has been answered, but I couldnt find anything when I searched.
I am trying to go back to stock on my Vibrant just like when I first got it out the box.
I flashed the unofficial update JI2 and then the JI6 through Odin, but now I want to go back to stock to see if I get the update from Tmobile or just do it through Kies.
In order for me to do this I have to go to stock and I cant find or know to to do it. I seem to be getting this whole Odin thing so if I can do it this way it would be great. Please let me know. Thanks.
I search Development section, but none of those worked for me. Not sure if Im doing something wrong.
I am no expert by any mean just a noobie but I downloaded the files on the link posted in I believe it was the Development section that was the JDF Odin stock rom etc. Look for it posted in there or search it and it will come up. I used Odin and it went smoothly and then I updated to ji6.I believe the link below is what you are looking for.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475
Here is the link again for some reason it shows up when I save it but when I exit out and come back it is gone
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475
Ok, so I did find this one, but I had no luck!
So did you click on the last one that says All 3 Files?
Or did you click them one by one?
you should try a custom rom before going back to stock!

Either way you want to do it. The 3 files-in-one is a smaller download if that matters to you. But they're all the same...
Also, in the Vibrant Bible, there's a link to Odin1.3 which worked well when I had to go from JI5 (via Kies) back to JFD for the Kies Mini update to JI6. Just fyi, I'm running Win7 Pro 64-bit, not sure what your setup is like.
When you say you had no luck, did you mean you couldn't get into download mode or Odin didn't work for you? For Odin to work you have to make sure the ID:COM in the upper left is populated with a number. Otherwise Odin is essentially saying that it doesn't see your phone, most likely due to driver issues.
Thanks for the help! I finally got it to work!

Why would you want the OTA if you already flashed it? Now you may run the risk of soft bricking after accepting the update... Maybe it's just past me at this early hour, but can't figure out why you wanna do this.
posting to save this thread to refer back to later
The reason I wanted to try Kies OTA is because of the missing Market apps and also because I was having lag problems with the flashed version.
Actually everything went smooth after I figured out how to do it.
Unfortunately there are still missing apps, But my phone runs alot smoother.

Um...
I'm going to assume you can not get into download mode or recovery mode?
yes I cant get to download mode or recovery
Same problem. My vibrant does not boot Tried the battery method, removing battery, holding volume buttons while putting it back in. Does not work Any other ideas I could try ?
DEAD Vibrant after OTA
Yesterday I borked my Vibrant. Spent alllll night using Odin to get it back to factory and then allowed the Tmobile ota update figuring that it worked fine before. Well it went to reboot and never came back. BLACK screen. Left it plugged in while I ate breakfast with tears dripping in my pancakes (I went to bed at 6am!) and I noticed the top of the phone was very hot. Not the battery the top.
Sometimes I hate technology but technology always hates me!
Would it be worth building a DIY plug?

First of all, what the HECK were you trying to flash onto your device? The only thing you should be using ODIN for is JFD or JI6. Those are the only official T-Mobile firmware you should be flashing to restore from a brick besides Eugene's Froyo, but that's for like emergencies.
Second of all, If you have the Bell Vibrant, this is the wrong forum.
Finally, there is no ODIN 3.1. You must be using Odin3 1.0 which is VERY unstable. Please do more research before you attempt to do things to your phone.
Address these concerns and we can proceed.

If Odin3 v1.0 is unstable you should offer the ignorant massess here the correct version to use including a link to it.

Listen here little guy, I was talking to him not you. I asked him three questions to verify what he did because if he doesn't even have the right model phone then this is the INCORRECT forum. The firmware he was trying to flash is incorrect and not stock. T959UVJE8 looks to be firmware for the Vibrant but stock firmware is T959UVJFD and the OTA update is T959UVJI6.
Posting in "our" forum Mr. 3 posts? You are telling me to do more research? That's funny.
Everything I mentioned can be found by simply going to the development section and looking in the Bible. I already mentioned that you need JFD and JI6. The latest version of ODIN is 1.7. All of this can be found in less than 2 minutes.
Bible:

Honestly, you need to start by looking through there. It seems you both have a lot to learn and spoon feeding you isn't going to solve the bigger problem. Hope you get it resolved. Look through there, find the files you need (you need to get use to looking in the Bible) and come back. If you still have problems after READING, I will walk you through it. Good day.

TMobile Vibrant. It does not even start. So, Odin is not even in the picture. I was flashing the 3 button fix for vibrant using update.zip method. It flashed successfully, but after flashing, it never came back on.
I managed to get my Vibrant into DL mode the other day when it was just a black screen by...
-take out battery, sim, and sd card
-plug phone into wall charger (not computer)
-hold volume buttons while popping the battery back in
it took me a couple times, but i guess the wall charger gets a better jolt?
fyi: my vibrant is not hardware locked
hope this works for you

Best firmware?

Hello, i'm kinda new to this firmware cooking thing!
I've got an I5800L galaxy 3 and i would really like to try some new firmwares!
I've read that from 2.1 everyone chooses JK1, which i really don't know what it its!
Shall i upgrade to 2.2? I'm really bothered with the Low memory for installing lots of applications.
What shall i do? Get a good 2.1 firmware and wait for official 2.2? Or install 2.2 right now? If that, where can i get it?
Sorry 'bout my english.
Hope you understand
Thanks in advance!
EDIT: Looks like everyone has upgraded to 2.2, where can i get it? I'm looking to install also lagfix, any help would be appreciated
Well,
i had installed a few versions of 2.2(cant remember witch exactly) for my wife's galaxy 3, and all had some problems... battery life less than a day for all of them.
so that was unusable for her, and than changed it to jk1, and now every thing works like it should...( except gps, witch was the problem with all the firmwares from the start).
so my response is to wait for factory 2.2

Oh ok, and where can i get Jk1?
On samfirmware.com but u must sign up for free.
Sent from my GT-I5800
JP9
JP9 is better firmware for Froyo in my opinion.
JPA, JPB and JPF drain the battery more than the other.
u can get it here (u must login first) : samfirmware.com/WEBPROTECT-i5800.htm
JPF is the best and latest firmware so far. It has good battery life and performance. Lagfix improves performance furthur.

Use my guide but with an appropriate firmware from samfirmware.
Not a hell lot you can do about the download speed. I suspect it might have something to do with hotfile - I get incredibly ****ty speed from hotfile, but not from any other file sharing service.
There should be a few threads lying around in the general section about stock roms. Try downloading from there instead of ****ty hotfile.

Before you flash anything you gotta make sure you have 2 backup plans. One is, of course, the nandroid backup. The other is having a stock firmware file you can flash with Odin in case everything goes to hell.
In my case, I have a JPU stock firmware stored on my home computer and on my work laptop. Every time I screw up so badly everything is FUBAR I go back to JPU and works like a charm.
Ah also, along with the JPU I have a CF-Root flashable file for JPU (just needs to be Froyo specific, not firmware release specific) so I can have root.
That's the only advice that hasn't been given to you already.
In reality, the Galaxy S is pretty hard to really brick. The bootloader may get corrupted but there's almost always a way out.
ok thanks guys +1
i will flash my phone with 2.3 and when I'am bored with it i'll flash it with some custom rom

Cognition, Villian, and Litening ROMs are the most popular in my opinion.
I know the Cognition ROM will let you overclock. Not sure about the others.
Theres really no need to overclock, this phone is lighning fast as it is and you can run it at 800Mhz with no noticable drop in speed....
Read up on odin, don't bother overclocking (as stated), buy a jig off ebay and don't rush into flashing ROMs (at least til your jig arrives)
and well done for winning

Hi
sorry if it sounds stupid but wots a jig? Lol
A jig could well be your "get out of jail free" card. It will enable you to get the phone into download mode should you screw up flashing a rom. It also resets the download counter should you need to return the phone.
Search ebay for galaxy s 2 jig, only a few pounds.

Yep, just look for your firmware version in about phone, grab the CF-Root kernel that matches the firmware version (Last characters like KE4, KE7, etc.) and then flash with Odin. For Odin, simply install Kies to get the proper drivers installed, load up odin, check PDA, look for the .tar file and flash. Pretty straightforward!
Keep in mind that some ROMs come pre-rooted (Like Cognition) because they use Cyanogenmod capable kernels (Supplied by codeworkxx from CM)
