Is there an easy way to update builds without losing all your stuff? Not completely changing the system, just updating to a newer version of the same build...
Thanks

Did you search the particular build's thread for that information?

Yes, I tried searching for updating, updating build, etc and didnt really come up wtih much.
Newsflash, that "SEARCH DE THREAD" mantra doesn't always work.
I've noticed that many of the threads regarding the roms give installation instructions, but not instructions on just updating build without losing settings and installed apps.
There's a lot of hostility towards people asking reasonable questions. If you're not going to answer, don't answer, but stuff like is unnecessary.

I simply asked if he'd searched and he answered. No I didn't have the answer but I figured I'd ask. Some, as you know, don't know how to search. I was much nicer than most of the search nazi's here.
Oh and the rolling eye smilie here is much more playful than most. See that smile on it's face?
Well the kitten really was kinda nice
I make a backup with appcontrol (apps (just in case) + data) and with mybackup. Also a backup with titanium backup. After i installed a new rom I first restore my contacts etc by mybackup. Then by appcontrol restore programs. Afterward i restore the program data with titanium. Things like data from games.
When I update to a newer version of a specific build, I just copy over the existing data.img folder and delete everything else. Going to a completely new build, I would use titanium backup.

I also like people who contribute when posting, not just criticise (although I agree with the cirticism).
If you've flashed a new ROM that will remain your ROM once you clear storage / hard reset. If you still have the original ROM, then you'll have the original.
When you flash a new ROM, that replaces the original on the device, so it's not possible to revert to the original without re-flashing it.
Sorry bout' the idiotic questions..
but i'm pretty new to the mobile sections..
I've tried to install Hard-SPL but it just didn't work..

If you check the newbie thread I think you can see I've done my share of contributing, having pretty much answered a lot of questions that were posted there...
And I'm not JUST criticizing ... This is the first time, after having seen a lot of people ignoring the thread that was made just for them.
Maybe they think their questions wouldn't be answered as fast or smth...but still...
Plus, I thought, wazaaappp answered his questions.
i just put a rom onto my phone and everything got deleted. Is there anyway i can get those back and still have the rom??

Not unless you did a nand backup.
yeah just boot to recovery and do a Nandroid restore of the back up you made. Assuming you did this like every ROM thread warns you to.
yes i did the nandroid backup but if i restore the backup will i still have to rom??
You can start by reading the forums and learn what you're doing before you do it.

really man you should read up on this stuff, go to the DamageControl thread and read about it. do a search and see what other people have said about it. 99% of the roms YOU are going to be dealing with are the same exact thing with minor preference variations.
yeah but how am i suppose to learn about it when i dont know what "dealing with are the same exact thing with minor preference variations" even means. How does that help me??

Because you have your Contacts set as Google and not phone, and you back up your apps with Titanium Backup.
Before you ask how to do either of those things, read the little book that came with your phone. It will tell you how to backup your contacts to Google.
Search the Hero forums for what Titanium backup is, and how to use it.
ok thanks!!

there are very few people who will hold your hand and walk you through these very easy to follow steps. READING about what is included in a rom, which i will tell you is ALWAYS on the first page of said rom's thread will tell you everything about that rom that you need or want to know. There are places to look up all the answers to your questions. here is a good place to start...

aaand...im out. before the tridant falls on my head, again.
Ok I'm a noob Hero owner so I'll attempt an answer.
When you turned on your phone for the very first time, after you got over the shock of how cool and awesome it was, I assume you either signed in with or created a google account.
Now after you flash a new ROM especially one that requires a factory wipe of all data, you will have to do that again. Your contacts and email and calendar will all resync to your phone courtesy of the fine folks at google.
As for the apps. Titanium backup seems to be the way to go no muss no fuss.
Holy crap. I've been on these forums for quite a while. I've had three different phones that I've used these exact forums as a resource for modding, rooting, or what have you with all three of them. I've never needed to post a single thing. I will use this opportunity to make my first post, and say:
lol
I wanted to take a first stab at doing some basic mods to a ROM and signing it as a zip for myself both to learn how to make a rom and to get the rom just the way I like it.
I wanted to take the IC3ROM v2.5 and make some minor changes for personal use. I removed/added some apps and then signed the zip correctly. One of the changes I wanted to make was to remove the DConfig app. I tried to install it onto my Hero, but got some error about "Unverified" and "DConfig app missing".
Is there some file I need to edit to tell it which apps are included/excluded in the ROM?
Thanks in advance.

FYI, I've already read the faqs and searched about 10 times. Seems like the forum here has become too assuming that no one is searching. I do searches before I post a new thread, which I don't do a lot.
FYI, I did find this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=551711
it seems somehow relevant, but I can't tell what specifically I have to do to remove the aforementioned error I'm getting.
So I've been searching all day trying to figure this out. I'm pretty sure I got my HD2 rooted (everything did as it was supposed to, but don't remember it rebooting, although it probably did). The problem I'm having is I want to load an Android ROM, but it's so confusing? I managed to get my G2 rooted and flashed multiple ROMs on it, but this is a lot different, and every time I google how to install them, it'll give me the Android ROMs, but no instructions? I found one I'd like to use (really I don't care which one it is as long as I have Android Market), but I'm seriously lost as how to flash it. I've been searching all day, and I know you guys hate posts like this, but I'm in serious need guys. Any help will be appreciated.
Also, the G2 ROM was flashed through ClockworkMod in recovery. I can get instructions on how to flash other ROMs, but it says nothing about Android ROMs.. I just want to be able to enjoy my phone!
there are stickies on how to do this
download this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1090783
install magldr then install CWM
download the zip file you want to install fromthe dev section and reboot intot he CWM menu and isntall
Thanks bro. I'm going to try it now and see if it works!
if i may...
the link given to you is a sticky in the hd nand section. pretty obvious to see if you open that forum, imo.
in all seriousness - what kept you from finding it? was it hard to find? did you not see the forum? were you nervous to try and use it? why did you feel the need to ask a how to question before trying something out?
i ask as your question is asked countless times and i am curious what xda can do better to get people information that is readily available. i am not trying to be snarky, rather learn from you as what we can do better.
thanks.

Agreed.
I too am curious as to why people either dont look first or just cant be bothered because that is what it seems like to me.
I just cant understand why people make topics like this when there is plenty of guides and sticky on exactly how to do it, It just seems a never ending circle of n00bs asking "how do I install android" and then people linking to the sticky/guide topics over and over.
Its even more surprising because these new users are given a video to watch as soon as the join up very clearly telling them to use search and read sticky/guide topics first.

Hi.
I was busy debloating and I've gone a bit too far.
All samsung apps which index the file system force close on me.
Gallery, My Music, Videos, My Files...
Do any of you know which framework, service or apk they all rely on?
Thanks.

You mean forum.... it's development bcos I'm building a bloat free SD English ROM, and I can't figure out which of the 589 files I've removed is causing the Samsung app fc's.
But I'm also more than happy for a mod to move it the thread.
I agree that this is wrong forum/thread. If CM12 PORTING thread was moved from development thread even though there was clearly active/documented development going on on a daily basis simply because Mods could see a working ROM at the time then this thread definitely needs to be moved or I declare shenanigans!
Anyway, have you thought to pm SkywakerZ? He has developed the SmartDebloater Tool so he may be able to give you a hint of what you can and can't safely delete.

Sorry for the trolling, but read the rules. If you have a question then ask it in the Q & A .
And i just recomended if you dont know the answer for your question dont try building roms.

OK, sorry for posting the wrong forum.
I've seen SmartDebloater, but it doesn't go deep enough also it (and all the other scripts) don't remove knox properly... (/init.container.rc needs to be addressed) and boot still requires a knox encryption class.
I wish there was a tool like procmon in windows for Android.
If nobody knows which framework or component all those Samsung apps require I'll just put everything back and start again.

making roms (system updates) is easy I've been doing it 1/0 since Win CE, XDA 2 (WinMo 2003). Making generic roms which everyone likes and answering their questions is hard.
[Update] Nothing in priv_app, app, framework or lib fixes my issue even with f.reset. So I'm stumped but I think it might have something to do with knox.
