After the update as many know the cell standby is much higher. This is a temporary fix and sprint needs to fix it in the rom but after every boot
Download battery moniter
Open it
Choose phone test info
Then phone information
Then you will see it is set to wcdma which is wrong we don't have dual gsm/cdma phone
Now choose cdma auto prl
Press menu and select radio. It will force close then you will loss service choose cdma auto prL.
Then check your cell standby and it will drop over time.

I'm not sure if it's the same issue, but if you select "cell standby" what is your "Time Without Service"?
An easier workaround to the TWS issue is to toggle airplane mode.
Hold down power button -> select airplane moe (repeat)
Another option is to update PRL.
This will reduce TWS until next reboot (workaround must be done after every reboot.)
I don't know if this is the same problem, but thought I'd let you know.

This was a common problem with the Hermes (TyTn). In the end there was not a full proof solution, but it was found that if you DO NOT let it go to sleep by itself but use the on/off button then it crashed much less often. I got into the habit of turning to standby manually as a matter of routine - it does make a difference.
In addition when charging I would always turn the screen ON before connecting the charger and leavie it on while charging. This prevented crashes that seemed to happen when plugging in the charger when in standby , only to find it would not come out of standby without a soft reset.

I had the Standby of Death SOD this is when the phone fails to come out of standby with a power button press. This issue only affects some people on some networks. I'm not sure if its a network problem or a software problem but as only a minority of people have it, I suspect its mainly a network problem there is a software solution.
The solution is to change the phone settings band option from auto 3G/2G to either 3G Only (WCDMA + UTMS 2100 in Europe) or 2G Only (GSM + AUTO) depending on your requirements.
Also read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=540943&highlight=standby&page=2 where the resolution was to get a new SIM.
Obviously this only solves the problem when the crash is because of the sim and/or settings which impact the sim. To rule out a software cause its best to start with a hard reset.
Ive read that 3G on can drain your battery alot more than 2g, i was wondering if there is a quick way to switch between the two as i have been going into the settings and through that way...
cheers
There are some widgets that are just a shorcut to the 2g/3g setting page, for example 2G-3G OnOff from CurveFish.
It's a shame android doesn't turn automatically 3g off when turning off the screen, maybe some custom rom will?
I use smoda widget, just search "smoda widget"and it'll appear. It's a convenient widget that switches your connection from 2g to 3g and vice versa. It's better than other widgets as it just selects and deselects 3g net work instead of changing apn settings like some others do.
Been using it for awhile now and it's great, always off 3g when I'm not using the phone and my batt drops only 3% in 8 hours !
Actually, Smoda doesn't switch between 2g/3g, it just turns off ANY data with just one-click. So, it will indeed improve battery life but you won't receive new mails or anything while switched off, while using only 2g will improve battery life AND let you get new mails (or anything else).
oh ok, well any other ideas?
The android SO doesn't allow that change. That'a why all you find is shortcuts to the menu where you can manually switch it.
There is an app that can do that but needs a custom cyanogen rom that doesn't exist for SGS.
The ideia behind that app is great. Is would switch to 2G when the phone goes to sleep and back to 3G if you wake it up. Has a few lag problems though. Anyhow it's not for SGS.
So get a good shotcut for it
I installed SmartBar, I have a shortcut to "Quick Settings" in the notification bar.
In Quick Settings there is 3g-2G icon that takes directly to the Mobile network settings" screen where you can change "Network Mode" to "G only.
With the firmware update it changed from 2G/3G to GSM/WCDMA. Having it on GSM definetly saves battery for me at home where I get lousy 3G reception.

Can you point which app is that? I thought it didn't exist.
i tried to download smart bar but it doesnt want to install, says install unsuccessfull
use Juice Defender
I am using Juice Defender and it will shut off 3G/2G when the screen is locked.
It also provides a widget to set mobile data off/on/controlled by Juice defender.
The free version can extend your battery life by 1.6.
Follow these steps to change a simple setting in the GPS system that prevents it from eating away at your battery. It has NO NEGATIVE effect on GPS performance. In fact, my GPS works extremely well despite the misleading 30m bug.
Turn on your GPS (from the Status Curtain or Power Control widget).
Open Dialer on your phone and type in *#1472365#.
Tap on "Setup".
Tap on "Position Mode".
Tap on "Starting Mode".
Select "Cold Start".
Another way to prevent unnecessary power usage (Until Samsung fixes this which I suggest people complain to them about) is to disable your EV-DO data connection.
I do it manually though these steps:
Open Dialer and type in *#4636*1111#
Tap on "Phone information"
Press the Menu button
Tap on "More"
Tap on "Disable data connection"
To restore the data, just follow the same steps but the menu will show "Enable data connection"
Other methods are to use the free version of JuiceDefender (Cancel the useless installation of AOSP helper).
Disconnecting data still allows phone calls and text messages to go through. This is perfect for people who have good 4G and WiFi coverage so you'll never be without data and still get good battery life.
Please keep this thread clean of any questions, if you need help just PM me. Only report any feedback or suggestions in here.

Solutions not working. Did you test for long enough? 24 hours at least with no reset? Restarts clear cache as does any manipulation *#1472...
My tests show ANY manipulation of *#1472... flushes expired but stuck xtra data so teh poofs are not really valid since you get an instant lock if you change it to cold start and back to hot.
make sure to check after one day with no resets (which flush xtra cache and give you an immediate fix anyway.) I have been testing warm start for 48 hours and thought I was ok, but in fact once emphermis expired, typcial situation of 8 to 11 seen, none in use.
Also staying in same place will render ephemeris checking less valid.
I have three Epics devices. I have been experimenting with old, one warm and one hot, reset, take a fix tonight, turn off gps call applications, and see which are holding expired ephemris and not fixing those seen 10 hours later from a different location.
What I know for sure is of the four Epic location problems*, the main one, seeing sats and not using them, is a clear symptoms of expired xtra data (epehmeris. almanac, and sometimes net time.)
I have been reading for the last few days this:
http://android.git.kernel.org/?p=pl...s.git;a=blob;f=loc_api/libloc_api/loc_eng.cpp
It seems gpstest (author:Lookwood) does have a function to clear xtra but it is not workign on Epic. I beleive the call in android would be
" loc_eng_delete_aiding_data (GpsAidingData f)"
Other notes:
1)It seems omniaII had a similar problem.
2) forcing cold start is not an optimum solution anyway as absent network xtra data source (a sprint connection), aka standalone gps maybe will be forced to pull almanac at each and every LBA gps call, meaning unnecessarily long times before acquisition (TTFF) in true standalone
*Epic location problems I am seeeing
1) GPS. Failure to flush invalid and expired xtra (*ephemeris and almanac)
2) GPS. mediocre to poor SNR ranges
3) GPS: invalid accuracy (false number hardcoded not dynamically calculated)
4) cell based: occasional abject failure to produce location from network alone.
A proper tuning it seems to me is setting the TIMING of the xtra data flush coordinated with QOS timing of a renewed xtra data attempt if Epic sees sats but you cant get a fix in say 2 minutes.
Has anyone come across a way to shut down the phone side without using flight mode?
I spend most of my time on wifi and I'd like to save the battery that's being used for cell standby. I know I can have flight mode on and then reactivate wifi but it seems like the long way around.
I found a solution and thought I'd share in case anyone else wants to save the phone radio battery usage while on wifi and isn't aware of this setting;
The radio can be switched off by dialing *#*#4636#*#* and selecting 'phone info' then switching the radio off at the bottom half of the page. You can also create a shortcut to 'phone info' issuing Any Cut to simplify the process.
I have an Optimus V, but have seen many, many posts dealing with this issue in a number of different threads, but haven't seen an automated fix for the data drop/time without signal/battery usage issues many people have been experiencing that seem to be related. I'm aware of the fix50 app that seems to take care of the TWS issue for me but does nothing for the data problems or rapid battery draining. I have had good luck with the following procedure posted by abcdfv in the "[How-To] Better battery life, reduce time without signal" thread:
NOTE: when you first open the testing menu, it will show it as CDMA auto (prl). This is a visual glitch, in reality, it is set to GSM auto (prl). If your TWS is around 50%, it means it's GSM auto (prl)
First things first, go into Settings> About Phone> Battery> Battery Use> Cell Standby. Assuming your phone has been on, or off the charger for ~10 minutes, it should show Time Without Signal at around 50%.
Next thing, press HOME, and bring up the dialer. Dial *#*#4636#*#* (Do not press "Call"). After a second, it should bring up the "Testing" menu.
Go into Phone Information, press MENU, and tap "select radio band." You should experience a Force Close, don't panic, this was supposed to happen. Scrolling down shows that the preferred network type is GSM auto (prl).
What this means is that even though you are connected to a CDMA network, your phone is trying to find a GSM network, preventing the radio from sleeping, and causing excessive battery drain.
Remedy this by tapping GSM auto (prl), and changing it to CDMA auto (prl).
Now your done, your TWS should drop dramatically, and you should experience much better battery life!
Note: You need to do this every time you reboot.

My question is this- has anybody developed a script or app to automatically do this process? If not, would anybody know how to tackle such a thing? I did find a post over on another forum with a script to periodically check for network connectivity and toggle data off and back on if a connection wasn't present, but I'm really more interested in something that would just run at startup, like the fix50 app, but would do the process listed above instead of a simple Airplane Mode toggle. I did install Any Cut and at least now have a shortcut to the testing menu, but it would be great to have something automated.
Thanks in advance!
