Greetings, xda-developers! I've been lurking the forums for a little while, probably since Cupcake was rumored back in December. Nice to meet all of you instead of hiding in the shadows.
Anyway, I have a question. I have a rooted G1 with TheDude's Cupcake 1.1, which obviously does not come with MyFaves. I've thought of switching my plan to a MyFaves plan because I've been wasting minutes talking to a lot of the same people. My question is, Can I have the MyFaves plan without the MyFaves application? And if so, would I just set the 5 numbers up through Customer Service? I've searched high and low for the myfaves.apk but I've yet to find it.
Thanks in advance!
You can also set your myfaves on the my.t-mobile website too, from what i've read. I wouldn't know as I am not on a myfaves plan.
That's what I was thinking too, but does T-Mo recognize it if the app isn't present? Oh, and I just checked my account online, and it looks like I already have MyFaves but I don't have a MyFaves plan. Under the monthly usage it shows:
Whenever Minutes
Messages
MyFaves
Mobile to Mobile
Night & Weekend
All the other ones show correct usage and the MyFaves bracket says "Used - 0. Remaining - Unlimited"
Did I get a free gift from T-Mobile?

Yes, however many customer services reps will claim that you cannot. They aren't lying to you but a lot of the documentation they use can lead them astray in the answers department.

No. You do it through the my.t-mobile.com web portal. Log in (register if you haven't already) and you'll see a "Mobile Life" section on the upper right of the page with a pull down for MyFaves management.

You will not find it legally. The MyFaves apk is a proprietary T-Mobile application.

Actually you can't find it period, atleast not in a version compatible with Android 1.5. You'll have to wait another 1-2 weeks for T-Mo US to release the 1.5 update for that.

Unfortunately, nope. It shows up as a line entry, but the actual provisioning of your 5 faves is inaccessible unless you upgrade to a myfaves plan. As uberingram pointed out above, it's in the My Services -> MobileLife section of the webpage. The layout of the webpage is a mess, but I guess this is really just par for the course for a mobile carrier (I also had Cingular/ATT for a few years, and it was just as bad)
just to confirm..
Hi guys, I wanted to clarify something in regards to the question asked in this thread. I've been lurking about since I first heard of the hero build haykuro is working on following that thread. I have not rooted my G1 but after seeing the videos I'm definitly tempted should that build ever release. My only concern with rooting is the lose of myfaves, would hate to think what it would do to my bill lol. So for my own peace of mind if I understand you guys even without having the myfaves app on my phone I can still use it so long as I have it set up through the tmobile site correct?

I thought the same thing when I went over to JF1.5 build. Since then I have been able to go to T-Mob's website and look at my MyFaves contacts and make changes as well. So to answer your question, yes you do get to call the 5 people in your MyFaves for free, even though the app is not on your phone.
yeah I use to have a 8525 and my girlfriend has a 8925 both from ATT, and myfavs worked on them. So if it will work on a non T-Mobile phone, it will work on the G1 without the app.
Awesome, thank you both for the reply. It was the biggest thing on my mind I thought I would lose it, guess I don't need to worry about it anymore then. Thanks again, I appreciate the quick responses
Yes, thank you all for the quick replies. I'm going to switch my plan. Another question though, and I may have to call T-Mo for this one
Once I change my plan, do they prorate it and does it take effect immediately or on the next billing cycle?
if I remeber correctly its the next billing cycle.
As I sit here and wait for 2.2.2 for my N1, it occurs to me I know nothing about the OTA process. A quick search of XDA reveals some of the same questions but few answers. Here's some things I'd like explained:
- How does the rollout process work?
- Are they controlled by HTC or Google or Tmobile?
- How does the selection of IMEIs work?
- How are the carriers involved in the distribution process?
- Is country of residence a factor?
- Does the update process work faster over WiFi? Or maybe require a cellular data connection?
- What does *#*#CHECKIN#*#* do exactly?
- What does clicking Settings...About Phone...System Updates do?
- Is the signing and structure of the update package understood?
- Would I get an OTA if I had no cellular data plan (only WiFi)?
Can anyone point me to a thread/page/wiki that has these answers?
To the best of my knowledge:

Google puts the update on their server, your phone checks in for updates every once in a while. If the Google servers tell your phone there is an update, it downloads it and prompts you to install it.

No one knows for sure. Seemingly random unless you have one of the "Holiday" Nexus Ones which seem to get preferential treatment to update first. Not always the case though.

Aside from the data being downloaded across their network, the carriers are not involved in any way with the Nexus One's update distribution.

I don't believe so. It goes off your IMEI and whether Google has chosen you.
- Does the update process work faster over WiFi? Or maybe require a cellular data connection?

That depends on the speed of your wifi or 3G connection. It is like downloading any other file off the internet (wifi will probably be faster).
- What does *#*#CHECKIN#*#* do exactly?

It forces your phone to check Google's servers for an update. But, if your IMEI isn't in the approved pool that the update is being sent to, it will NOT cause your phone to get the update ahead of time. IMO, the checkin code is worthless as you will almost always see the update file posted here long before your phone will tell you there is an update.
- What does clicking Settings...About Phone...System Updates do?

That only lists updates your phone has already downloaded and are ready to apply. It does not check for new updates.

The wiki is located in a link at the top, labeled appropriately enough "WIKI".
It may not have these specific answers, but is an excellent place to go before asking any questions here.
Oh, and one more thing. You have posted this in the wrong forum. This forum is not for questions. The forum labeled "Nexus One Q&A" would have been the appropriate forum to start this thread in.
I have a korean nexus and it got updates which slighty different from stock rom, i think it maded by kt itself, not google.
My opinion is thats because its a operator model. And yours t-mobile nexuse one wouldnt be one of the first wholl recieve ota.
Btw my korean nexus stll didnt recieved FRG83D
There are no operator models in the US, only Vodafone in Europe and KT in Korea have them.
The updates of the operator ones still come from Google, but they're delayed for testing/modification by the networks.

Curious: Why, for example, sense'd phones can have "check for updates" button, and we have to just stare and wait?
Cheers!
Because HTC decided that's how they wanted it.

Yes, but I can't find any reason to NOT give the option to manually chceck for updates. I had that option in stock android 2.1 on the Milestone, so it can't be to difficult if Moto Europe lazy devs could do that. Am I missing something or it's just illogical?
Hm. Maybe google didn't want hteir servers to be DDoS'd when new update arrives

Hi Rusty, how do define operator models? I have FRG83D installed! Before that I had FRF91 (Vodafone)! Is my phone still a operator model? In which way does it effect the OTA process?
Unless you've deliberately made the effort to switch to the untouched Google firmware, you'll still have the Voda variant.
What this means is you will receive updates much later than the Google bought handsets, if you tried to install the 2.2.2 update (FRG83G), you'll find that it will fail.

it's really a hard work to wait OTA with google's official version. So I can't wait and just flash a lot of vendor room from the XDA.
the "checkin" seemed to force the phone to check update...
I've rooted my FRG83D, and received my 2.2.2 yesterday, but failed to go through the update due to not found carhome.apk which I deleted manually...

We need ubdate.zip file which was downloaded to your phone. It's located in /cache/ folder I guess .
This is my first motorola android phone. How long does it typically take after they release the final build of a sw version for them to officially release to the general public? Also, has anyone who has gotten the update, uploaded it anywhere for others to download or is that even possible with this type of release? Thanks.
p.s. Can't post links but am sure most have seen the other 2.2 thread in this forum...
Ok so it looks like we may be in some trouble. www.androidcentral.com/motorola-bravos-froyo-update-delayed-cusp-its-release#comment-126421
This is att causing the delay. If you look in the pic of AC's post, the message was being viewed on MyCSP which is a website att uses for its employees to get any info att related. Looks like bravo users get the shaft again. Oh well, maybe the delay wont be that long.
They better not pull a cliq xt on us and that may very well be true. Even with motoblur this phone can more than handle froyo.. but well see what they say.

Yes it would seem that AT&T is dragging heels somehow. Beta testing has gone well and I have not had too many issues. Patience is the key here I think. Froyo is on the way
I don't follow the Bravo stuff too much being a Captivate owner but my wife just came to me with her Bravo asking me what this message was about.
It was a text from AT&T telling her to follow the instructions to download the Froyo upgrade.
Came here to see what the forum had to say about it.
I'm loving froyo. It's snappier, and I had no issues with settings migration. The youtube app is great, the exchange email client is way better, and I like a few other minor changes.
There are some small features that have been removed, but I haven't payed attention to those because I didn't personally use those features. The only one that comes to mind is screen lock disable had been changed/removed.

Ran a software update check this morning on my Rogers Note3, after my friend mentioned he got KitKat on his Bell S4 on the weekend. Sure enough, 400+MB update was available.
Servers were slow (both my home Wi-Fi and LTE were getting the same speed. Took about an hour to download). Install went smoothly and only took 2-3 minutes. And KitKat it is.
I'm using Nova Launcher, so the only immediately visible change is that all the icons in the status bar are plain white. Otherwise, I perused through the system settings and didn't see much that was different beyond the addition of a "Printing" option under Connections > More networks, and the odd change here and there. However, things do feel smoother and basic stuff like unlocking the device has no lag at all.

Am wondering. I am rooted with knox 0x0 on 4.4.2 using the mexican telcel rom form a cpl months back and the old modem from 4.3 mj4.
I want to get latest KK from Rogers while maintaining root. SO I cant do an update this way. Is there a way to flash just the modem and sytem files form this update ot get me to latest version of things without wiping all my data?
I'm just wondering. Why is it because Bell and Rogers note 3 gets KitKat that at&t note 3 gets KitKat? Not trying to be a smartass or anything but does one of them own the other or something?

I'm not really sure what you mean?
Bell, Rogers and Telus all use the same versions of most phones as what AT&T in the U.S. offer, as their networks share the same spectrum ranges. So when the manufacturer of a phone (Samsung) releases an OS update for an AT&T model phone, all four companies then have access to that and can tweak that update and release it to their customers when they wish. Typically (though not always) that means that all of the companies release updates to their customers around roughly the same time.

I just wonder if they actually believe people use all or any of their bloatware. if their products were in a store it would be already marked down and discontinued.
I unrooted my Rogers Note 3 with Kingo and managed to download the update file on my device. Once I began the install it failed and rebooted. Any ideas?
Wait! Your telling me there are different apps out there that are not from at&t? Every aspect of the phone can be used by an AT&T app.

Totally agree! just ignore him his opinion is worth nothing anyway
Android pay is as useless as Apple Pay since the merchant needs to have a contactless machine. Samsung Pay, on the other hand will be more useful as it can be used virtually anywhere. Plus, I'm very disappointed by the very small number of banks supporting it in the UK.. No Barclays, no Santander, no RBS/Natwest etc...
bbc.co.uk/news/technology-35874420
According to the BBC article from yesterday:-
Google has said that it will extend Android Pay to the UK "in the next few months".
Guys
Android Pay is finally live in the UK and can be downloaded from the Play Store (if it doesnt show up on the one on the phone go to web-version one)
At the moment only couple of banks are participating but i can say i installed and used successfully at Waitrose with my First Direct Card
One thing to keep in mind - is that for some users (esp Samsung S7/Edge users) when you try to add a card it tells you that Android Pay cannot verify you are using a legit version of android. This happens to un-rooted users and is due to the DPI change; as you remember you can change DPI in Samsung Display Options - if it is set up to condensed it wont work - so you need to revert back to Standard - then add the cards and then you can revert back and use your android pay
Have fun everyone
and lets hope more bank will be used soon (eg AMEX)

Not sure when Samsung pay will come to UK - probably in Autumn most likely
Android Pay is easy to setup and use - as long as you keep the native DPI on your phone (if you use the condensed option it wont work)
i like the condensed DPI so i am not going to use AP for the time being (also since i do most of my transactions on my Amex and its not supported)
