MyFaves without MyFaves application? - G1 General

Greetings, xda-developers! I've been lurking the forums for a little while, probably since Cupcake was rumored back in December. Nice to meet all of you instead of hiding in the shadows.
Anyway, I have a question. I have a rooted G1 with TheDude's Cupcake 1.1, which obviously does not come with MyFaves. I've thought of switching my plan to a MyFaves plan because I've been wasting minutes talking to a lot of the same people. My question is, Can I have the MyFaves plan without the MyFaves application? And if so, would I just set the 5 numbers up through Customer Service? I've searched high and low for the myfaves.apk but I've yet to find it.
Thanks in advance!

You can also set your myfaves on the my.t-mobile website too, from what i've read. I wouldn't know as I am not on a myfaves plan.

That's what I was thinking too, but does T-Mo recognize it if the app isn't present? Oh, and I just checked my account online, and it looks like I already have MyFaves but I don't have a MyFaves plan. Under the monthly usage it shows:
Whenever Minutes
Messages
MyFaves
Mobile to Mobile
Night & Weekend
All the other ones show correct usage and the MyFaves bracket says "Used - 0. Remaining - Unlimited"
Did I get a free gift from T-Mobile?

Yes, however many customer services reps will claim that you cannot. They aren't lying to you but a lot of the documentation they use can lead them astray in the answers department.

No. You do it through the my.t-mobile.com web portal. Log in (register if you haven't already) and you'll see a "Mobile Life" section on the upper right of the page with a pull down for MyFaves management.

You will not find it legally. The MyFaves apk is a proprietary T-Mobile application.

Actually you can't find it period, atleast not in a version compatible with Android 1.5. You'll have to wait another 1-2 weeks for T-Mo US to release the 1.5 update for that.

Unfortunately, nope. It shows up as a line entry, but the actual provisioning of your 5 faves is inaccessible unless you upgrade to a myfaves plan. As uberingram pointed out above, it's in the My Services -> MobileLife section of the webpage. The layout of the webpage is a mess, but I guess this is really just par for the course for a mobile carrier (I also had Cingular/ATT for a few years, and it was just as bad)

just to confirm..
Hi guys, I wanted to clarify something in regards to the question asked in this thread. I've been lurking about since I first heard of the hero build haykuro is working on following that thread. I have not rooted my G1 but after seeing the videos I'm definitly tempted should that build ever release. My only concern with rooting is the lose of myfaves, would hate to think what it would do to my bill lol. So for my own peace of mind if I understand you guys even without having the myfaves app on my phone I can still use it so long as I have it set up through the tmobile site correct?

I thought the same thing when I went over to JF1.5 build. Since then I have been able to go to T-Mob's website and look at my MyFaves contacts and make changes as well. So to answer your question, yes you do get to call the 5 people in your MyFaves for free, even though the app is not on your phone.

yeah I use to have a 8525 and my girlfriend has a 8925 both from ATT, and myfavs worked on them. So if it will work on a non T-Mobile phone, it will work on the G1 without the app.

Awesome, thank you both for the reply. It was the biggest thing on my mind I thought I would lose it, guess I don't need to worry about it anymore then. Thanks again, I appreciate the quick responses

Yes, thank you all for the quick replies. I'm going to switch my plan. Another question though, and I may have to call T-Mo for this one
Once I change my plan, do they prorate it and does it take effect immediately or on the next billing cycle?

if I remeber correctly its the next billing cycle.

Answering Machine for Mobile phone

TEAM,
I have been looking for answering machine for my HTC, Imate unfortunately I never come across this. I any one in the forum or developer of software for mobile can develop this or is it not possible. We have many software in market and many developer but I don't see why is not been develop.
Looking forward your comments and wishing every one in this forum
Happy New Year and All The best
It's called voice mail and it comes with pretty much every phone plan on earth. That's why there's no development for such a product - there is no need for it.

answering machine isnt like voicemail, with answering machine you could listen to the caller leaving a message, just as you would on a home answering machine, then pick up if you wanted, I had that option in my old sprint flip phone sanyo 4500.

Yeah and with every phone plan on earth, it is very restricted unless you are willing to pay a fortune to the provider.

Restricted how? I have AT&T and VM is included for free. I can check it from anywhere very easily. It does exactly what I want it to do.
with htc there seem to be a pretty steap deviding between pda and phone when it comes to speakers
do a search for requests for recording conversations
do a search for answering machine
do a search for getting the "phone" speaker to work with skype and other VOIP
it seem to be a hardware design issue

Canada for instance, don't know about other countries, you either pay $7-10 for three VMs or pay 15 or more for a few more, so no it is not always included in the plan.

Unlike other countries where little competion exists but carriers are intent on providing the maximum services, Canadian providers are exceptionally greedy. They've got the cash cow all to themselves and milking every last drop out of it. Hopefully this will change soon...

Unfortunately not all countries are built the same (mind you prices have gone down - but still not included), all providers in Canada are about the same, see below:

T-Mobile "Over The Cap" Throttle Is No Joke...

I just exceeded my 5GB for the first time ever (I thought I exceeded it last month but I didn't).
My speed test results were as followed:
Pre-Throttle:
DOWN: 3.5 mb
UP: 2.0 mb
Post-Throttle:
DOWN: .06 mb
UP: .09 MB
That is insane. It takes absolutely forever just to load pages now, and my reset isn't until the 8th.
Is there a way around this?
Not that I am aware. use wifi.
This happened to me last month. Sucked balls
actually, there was some work done a couple months ago on this.
something about pulling a file out of /system or /data and then editing the file to delete a couple lines of code, then pushing back to phone. (you may be able to use RootExplorer if youre not adept at ADB)
i understand it that Tmo tracks data usage, then sends a message to your phone to throttle. this message changes some settings.
apparently if you delete or modify those lines of code, the throttle message from Tmo does NOTHING but take up space in your sms inbox
i would post the thread for you, but i forgot where i found it.
just googlesearch "nexus throttle xda" and you should find it.

...but it says "out of date" and when I pull up /system/framework/service.jar and try to open it in text editor, its just characters..
Anyone have information on this?
EDIT-
I found files in data/system/ that were called (Folder) Throttle (which was modified today, when my throttle would have taken effect), a file usagetracker and a folder usagestats (which had a few files created through the day today).
I deleted all of the above, rebooted....phone rebooted fine.
Let me check and see if I'm throttled still...
EDIT2-
Yeah, I shouldn't have expected it to be that easy lol. Still throttled.
EDIT3-
After rebooting and clicking my browser, the file in /data/system/throttle came back again...so it may actually have something to do with it.
File is -470754350 and temp.
I remember reading that switching over to EDGE and then back to 3G somehow made the throttling go away...

Yeah I tried. I actually switched to 2g, deleted the throttle folder, switched back to 3g and tried again but same results. Soon as I switch to 3G and try anything to do with internet it puts that throttle folder back in the data/system folder.
I opened the file, and its just a bunch of numbers. I tried playing with the numbers a bit to see what happens but so far, nothing has changed...

How is it dying? Its now a part of the largest cellular provider in the US. wtf
Tmobile edge routers shape traffic based on IMSI, HLR, and VLR which are stored on the SIM and authenticate user equipment/accounts to the network... meaning, shaping is done at the OSI layer 3 network level... attempts to make changes at a higher level will result in the same condition (data throttled connection), which is why your changes to the registers on the device would not rectify the throttling... proxify your transmissions to get the result you desire...

It'd be nice if we could get some guys together and figure out a solution to this for others though
I think what galaxys is saying is that the throttling is done on the network side, not on your phone. So, no matter what change you make to your phone, you will still be throttled by the network. I don't see how proxying would help either since the data still goes over the network... unless it can't throttle encrypted traffic or something.

I think I'd rather have a 5GB cap and merely get throttled as apposed to being charged.

[Q] Is Sprint going to charge for individual text regardless of Unlimited plan?

http://www.androidcentral.com/espn-text-alerts-shut-out-sprint-network
This is from a post regarding the ESPN app not senting text to Sprint customers anymore. Read the update at the bottom:
Update: And just like that, we get a tip about what's really going on. Here 'tis:
It's not a "money thing" in the traditional sense. They didn't give us a real clear picture of what's going on, but ESPN offers these messages free of charge to ESPN.com members, and Sprint is going to start charging their customers for each individual text message, regardless of having an unlimited messaging package. ESPN really isn't going to put up with it being "free," yet not free.

You are correct. I found this post on another site by a user named Mustangboy88 so all credit to him for the info.
Just found this article over on the Sprint Forums and it basically shows what happened today.
http://http://www.mobilemarketer.com...orks/9330.html
This was already going to happen, but obviously none of us knew. This is not the only service that it going to be affected. This is all on Sprint's end. They basically want and have raised the price on the companies that send out texts through their databases. The update above is not exactly right and really should be rephrased. They are not charging "us", but rather, charging the companies that send out the mass texts to subscribers of that paricular service.
T-Mobile tried the same thing last September. And VZW tried it in 2008 with a .03% increase for content related text services.
Here
This is something that is happening across all the carriers. I think it is just getting blown up because ESPN is a big name to throw out and really affects the masses.
I am like many above. I like getting my texts, instead of refreshing apps to get the scores. Not to mention that ESPN did a pretty good job getting the scores out pretty quickly. I installed the scorecenter app and hopefully it will fill the void.
Sprint speaks
In response to inquiries on the topic, Emmy Anderson, Minneapolis-based spokeswoman for Sprint, gave the following statement:
Sprint is partnering with many industry-leading companies to form the core of Sprint’s Solution Enabler Program.
These solution-enablers have direct access to Sprint’s APIs that are exposed through the new Sprint Services Framework.
Solution-enablers will also provide many of their own value-added services to help a customer deliver an optimized solution that meets their needs.
As the first wave of APIs, Sprint is exposing services such as LBS, SMS, MMS, geofence and presence as part of the Sprint Services Framework.
Many services will be provided for free such as presence, while some services will require Sprint to charge solution-enablers, aggregators and developers a fee to recoup our costs of delivering these services.
Sprint is not increasing the messaging or data fees consumers pay
Specific to SMS, Sprint will charge a per-message fee to aggregators and solution-enablers for SMS programs.
This charge is a cost-recovery measure designed to allow Sprint to continue to support the billions of SMS messages that are sent each year as part of mobile marketing campaigns, alerts, et cetera.

[Q] Tmobile stopped my tethering!

So there are a bunch of threads out there addressing this issue but after searching for a couple hours I can't seem to find a definitive answer.
I have the Nexus 4 from the Google Play store. I am rooted and running cm10.1. I have the prepaid $30 100min unlimited text unlimited data (5gb high speed) plan. I was tethering periodically with my Nexus 4 using the built in cm10.1 functionality just fine and the BAM tmobile up sell page telling me to pay for tethering (using google chrome browser which I basically can't live without). WTF??? I thought the main point of getting the phone from google was NO CARRIER BS?!
Anyways, enough with my rant. I searched a bunch of forums and googled all the user string agent switcher and APN blah blah blah but haven't had any success. I would consider myself computer savvy and all but I know a bunch of you guys are a lot smarter than me and could help me out.
Can someone help me out with a workaround for dummies solution that I could easily follow? How to really change the user agent without using mobile sites on my desktop would be nice. I just need the step by step guide.

As powerful they may seem Google can't tell your carrier how to charge you. I thought the point of getting from Google was (price point?) having the ability to put any sim card YOU choose.

^^^^^^ Exactly. Yes, you bought the phone unlocked off contract, but you signed a plan contract so you still have to do what it says. Buying this phone from Google meant that you didn't get a bloated OS and that you didn't have to sign/resign a two year agreement plan. The phone and where you got it from is irrelevant. Your plan is through T-Mobile, so you still belong to them and still have to play by their rules until you leave them. You agreed to the terms of the plan (including the fact that tethering will cost you extra) so if you should be upset with anyone, it's yourself for not paying attention. I'm not trying to be an ass, just showing you how the real world works. Welcome to it. You can't escape it. You just gotta man up, pull your britches down and bend over and take it.

Hotspot?

This is the first phone I have bought that is not a Verizon phone of some kind. I just ordered a XL tonight from Google store. Said I would have it Thursday. I am coming over from the Turbo. Been a good phone for the last 2 years. I will unlock the bootloader, looks easy enough. Will this have a hotspot app? For now the only thing I want is too unlock and get the hot spot to work. Is it called something different? Maybe I just don't know what I should be looking for. Maybe someone could point me in the right direction. I don't mind reading.
Thanks

There is the mobile hotspot that you can use but with VZW it checks to see if you've paid for the tethering subscription. With a rooted device there are a few ways to bypass the subscription check and use the hotpsot for free.

Thanks for your reply. I do have still an old Alltel plan with unlimited data. Some other people here I see have missed the main question I have. Maybe I did not ask it right. I have never owned a non Verizon phone. I don't have my new phone yet. I think it ships today. Does it have an app on it for hotspot? Is it called this still on non Verizon phones? Maybe I am making more of this then needed. I just did not know if this was a Verizon thing or phone thing.
Really all I want to do with this is unlock it and make a hot spot work. I'm not going to do much else with it. From reading here before I bought the phone it seemed a good move to buy from google then from Verizon.
Thanks for the help.
Hotspot is built into the rom. You toggle/adjust it just like Wi-Fi or Bluetooth in the settings menu an/or pulldown shade.
However, if you're on a Verizon unlimited plan then it won't work unless the build.prop is edited. You can do this with a file explorer, using a build.prop editor app (my preference), with adb, or by installing a rom that already has the edit made. You can search the forum for those instructions. I'm in the same situation as you and have hotspot working.

Thanks you. I will do some reading on this. In my turbo all I did was make a change in the build.prop file. I just did not know if anything would change with non Verizon and newer software on the phone. I paid a long time ago for SQLite so once I'm unlocked and rooted this should work I hope. I have some reading to do.
Thanks again.

The hotspot feature is a part of Android. It does, however, check your carrier subscription to see if hotspot functionality is allowed on your plan upon launching. This is why I asked about data plan earlier.
I hope it works for you, otherwise there are workarounds (root and non-profit methods) available on this forum. Good luck!
