A number of people have experienced a long-standing Android bug on their Nexus One, that when you spend an extended period of time in an area with no signal, the phone never reconnects until a reboot. Even attempting to shut down cleanly or to go into and out of airplane mode results in Android crashing after a minute or so and rebooting that way.
It's hard to draw conclusions from my experience because the occurrence rate was so random (sometimes a couple of times in a single day, sometimes ten days between occurrences), but I installed Froyo Saturday evening and haven't experienced the "no service" bug since then. That's getting close to the MTBF for me over the last few months. The official ticket is still listed in "new" status (after almost a year!), but it's possible that some change in Froyo fixed it without the developer being aware of that particular ticket.
Has anyone who was experiencing the "no service" bug in 2.1 had it happen again since upgrading to Froyo? Now that I can do hands-free bluetooth dialing, that's the biggest remaining blemish on my Nexus One experience, so I'd be thrilled if the bug were, in fact, gone.
Just a little FYI, that is actually a common "bug" independent of Android. I sell cell phones for a living, and many phones, from BB's to WM, Nokia to Samsung, and everything in between has this "bug". Not all do, but I would say 90% of phones have this bug where if you leave coverage for an extended period, it doesn't re-connect when you move back in, and need to reboot. It is because phones are set up to stop searching for a network after X ammount of time without coverage, to prevent the battery drain of constantly searching. When you do go back into coverage, there are two ways to re-register... either reboot, or most phones have an option to manual search and register with a network. I know with my Nexus One this has only happened to me once, at my Dad's (his house is a deadzone for everyone), and all I did was do the manual search and was back up and running, didn't have to reboot.
The Nexus One version of this bug is unusually annoying, though: a manual search for networks turns up nothing (normally I have good signal strength whenever I step outside my house from both T-Mobile and AT&T, but neither shows up after the bug hits), and having the phone crash and spontaneously reboot if you enable airplane mode when the phone is in this state is pretty severe.

That is pretty severe, in that it reboots... but the "bug" of not getting signal back has nothing to do with strength or the N1 is all I am saying. I have at least 2 people a day come into my store with this issue, on all different handsets. Some can get it back just by manually searching (this is different from switching between airplane and back), others have to reboot.
I spent a few 1/2hr chunks today with my FRF50 Froyo'd N1 in a spot in the office that was guaranteed to cause this bug to show up. And every single time it's reacquired the network when I left. Take that with a grain of salt since the bug has been intermittent for me.
Now if only the headset and AVRCP music controls hadn't broken this would be phone heaven.
Yeah, I think it's improved for me with 2.2 as well. One thing that's handy though is an Airplane Mode widget, as cycling the antenna with that usually worked for me before Froyo.
this "bug" drove me crazy! It would tend to happen to me at least once a day. I am scared to say this, but it hasn't happened one single time since updating to "unofficial froyo"
Well, good news all around! I'm not quite ready to declare the bug dead, because I've been disappointed a number of times after tweaking something and having the bug lurk quietly for a number of days, only to pop up again after I had decided it was gone, but it's certainly looking encouraging. Thanks for all the responses. Keep us updated.
I've had the same bug issues, and usually at home when it happens. This radio seems determined to reacquire no matter what.
As for the AVRCP comment, my N1 a la FroYo is working great with my BT3030 stereo Bluetooth receiver. I use the controls all the time.
I think i am having somewhat of a unique problem with this. My "use network to determine location" setting isnt working. When i first turn on or reboot the phone it will find my location as usual. But as soon as i have turned the GPS on this setting will no longer work. Once i turn GPS off it no longer uses the cell towers to determine my location. In fact, when i turn GPS off, my location on google maps jumps back to where i was before i turned GPS on. So when i did this at home, it told me i was still near my work, which is 10 miles away. Anyone else have this issue? It is very frustrating when using an app like sherpa or yelp because it is lot looking for stuff anywhere near where i am.
odd problem. i've read similar things about the gps. Maybe i'm just close to the sattelites, but i get great GPS. In fact, this is the best GPS i've ever gotten from a phone. I've had a ton of smartphones with GPS including blackberry, iphone, iphone 3g, Htc Hero, HTC EVO, and now this Vibrant.
This is the first time, i've had a phone GPS that stayed in the lane the entire way i drove home. Plus it was always right on the spot without delay. The only grievance was it took about a minute to sync up. Reminded me of the old TOMTOM devices and their 1 minute syncs. But once it got going, it was spot on.
This is not a GPS issue. It does take me a little bit to connect to GPS, but i am mainly concerned with being able to use the network to determine my location. This function uses less battery than GPS but still works for things like sherpa and Yelp.
Wow...I wsa hoping this was going to be a hot issue that other people were experiencing. This makes me think i should exchange my phone because i have some sort of defect. Please, any opinions...
After applying the GPS fix I am having an odd issue. When I fist launch google maps it shows me in some small rural village in China. Once the GPS gets a fix it goes to where I am really am. This would not be a big deal except when I take pictures it Geotags the picture as being in this Chinese village which is kind of a pain. Also it screws up my weather widgets sometimes. Any ideas? I was thinking maybe it has to do with the server it is using to pull down the GPS data, but not sure.
I am having a similar issue, but not quite as drastic. Mine just simply shows me being the last place i was before GPS was turned on. Like right now, without GPS connected but using the towers to figure out my location, it shows me at the place i at lunch, about 3 miles away, rather than at work. Its VERY frustrating.
I'm having the same problem. My GPS shows me in a neighboring city that is 50 miles away, every time.
The best way to test this is to load the 'Maps' live wallpaper. It happens every time. Also, booting up the 'Maps' application will throw me into the other city for at least five minutes, before it realizes that the data is not correct.
It's a new "google fortune" feature. It's telling you you need to travel the world.
Same problem here, however, I was thinking it had more to do with the "Use Wireless Networks" not updating my location.
-If I have gps turned off and wireless network location on. My location doesn't update at all until I reboot the phone (although Latitude shows it as being updated within the last few minutes, even though it shows me somewhere I haven't been in hours and is 50miles away.)
-If I turn gps on, it will then get a fix and properly update my location.
I did apply the GPS fix.
lol mine switches between seattle and SPAIN! wtf.
I think it has to do something with the way samsung implements the gps receiver..a friend had a sammie moment..she would be right next to me..nyc...but her gps would say shes in havana, cuba..on good days..some place in estonia..lol...and now i see the issues being replicated here...i blame samsung...my old trusty g1 locks a signal and is very accurate within a min or 2..
Thanks for the info, sync3. That's starting to become my thought as well.
What a shame. I hope an official statement is released, either way.

This is the EXACT problem I am having. I dont know how to get it to update my location.
I have the same issue. I also had applied the GPS fix... I've tried reverting to stock settings, tried enabling skyhook and tried a few other things.
The only way I've been able to properly get my location is to turn off the network assist and tell the GPS to operate in standalone mode. It takes a heck of a lot longer for a fix, but it's accurate if it does get a lock. Doesn't work so well indoors though.
Who the heck were the field testers for this device? its full of more bugs than an entymologist's labratory.

That was one of the first things I tried. It didn't help.
My main concern is that this is unrelated to the GPS software issue and that this is actually a hardware issue. Does anyone agree or disagree with this?

I agree this is hardware related because others have reported exchanging their phones rids them of the GPS issues.. :-/
I work in Houston and sometimes while at work GPS says I'm in Pawcatuck, CT.
The question is when not using gps what function of the phone updates your location? Could it be a network issue? How do you force it to retrieve tower data that marks your location?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Well, i exchanged my phone last night because of this issue and the new one is doing the same thing. So either this is a problem inherent to this model (hopefully the software not telling the phone to refresh tower data) that can be fixed with an update or i am extremely unlucky.

Just had my 3rd call with TMobile- she now assured me that this is a software issue (which i made her mark in my account incase it winds up being hardware later) and that all phones with software # T959UVJFD have it. She said tmobile is working with samsung to fix. I told her all Galaxy S series, domestic and international, have GPS issue and samsung has yet to fix any. She said well that is something you need to consider.

Wow, very helpful information. How they get this fix released ASAP.
The GPS on my Vibrant was working fine until yesterday. Starting last night, the phone has shown difficulties for searching GPS, or positioning me thousands of miles away.
What should I do now, folks?
I'm on the latest JK6.
GPS is going haywire...
Im having the same issue with my gps. I havent made any changes that I can remembe so I'm not sure what is causing it. any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx
+1 on this. Gps was working flawlessly for a while now but since yesterday, not even the gps restore from samsung in the market can get it back in line...

Same thing here, only it tells me I'm either in Santa Monica or NYC (technically in the ocean) when I'm actually in Minnesota.
I hadn't tested GPS since switching to JK6, though.... JK6 related or something else?

In fact, I flashed back to JK2 tonight. The GPS seems to be still lousy (strangely, the baseband remained at JK6 without changing back)
Same here. It was working fine until late last night. The locations I got range from Bay Area to NYC but I was in LA.
check if you have " mock location" ticked or not.
its in the same place as the debugging option.
cheers.

I am also having the gps go crazy as of the past 2 days and I have had great gps before(for this phone). I was on V5 jk2 and after flashing jk6 modem the gps started acting up, I'm assuming this new modem could be the issue
Update * today everything is working and I did not change a thing, I have no idea what the issue was

I just had that problem tonight. I'm wondering if something weird happened system-wide that messed up a lot of phones. Before I saw this thread, I posted in the "Vibrant General" forum on this matter. After re-booting to try to get it to behave -- with no luck -- I went into my dialer-accessed GPS settings and found that two of them had been mysteriously changed. I got the GPS back with some changes. Here's what I know:

Same thing happened to me tonight, my gps had been working great. Till tonight when i tried using it, it kept saying i was in New York, than Cali, etc. When in fact i live in Oregon. So when i got home i asked my Gf who has the vibrant as well if her gps was acting up, she tested it and it was not acting up, so i started messing with some setting and got it to work perfectly.
I messed with the settings in "My Location Sources"
There are 2 settings in there for gps related stuff.
"Use Wireless Networks"
"Use GPS satellites"
What i noticed was if i uncheck gps satellites i could use the google app, "places" (that comes with there Google map app) that it would find lets say gas stations near my location. So i tried to navigate there, and it asked me to hit the check button for the GPS satellites, i went into settings and checked it than went to navigate to it, within 5secs it planned a route with no troubles at all.
Now it works great, so for me to able to get my gps to work, i just have to go into the settings and check both boxes (i uncheck to save battery life, when im done).
Hopefully this makes sense, sometimes i tend to go on and on lol.
Any questions feel free to ask.
I am new to this site, so be kind!! =)
mine doesn't work either...
Zach-
It sounds like there was nothing much wrong with the phone. If I'm understanding your post you had your GPS on, but it seemed like you couldn't connect, right? So you turned it off momentarily and, when you accessed an app that needed it, it told you to turn it on. When you had "Use GPS Satellites" unchecked and "Use Wireless Networks" checked, it means that the GPS is not on or being used at all, and your phone was taking location readings off cell towers (which is not nearly as accurate as location by GPS). The test of your GPS is to have the "Use Wireless Networks" setting unchecked and the "Use GPS satellites" checked. If you turn the GPS on from the task bar at the top, you'll see that the box "Use GPS Satellites" is switched on, and is switched back off when you turn off the GPS from the task bar...so there is no reason to bother to go into the Location and Security Settings to toggle your GPS on/off. If I am not understanding your post, please clarify.
If you actually want to see how well your GPS works and how many satellites it locks on, download the free app "GPS Test."
Two other things: 1) many of us find that the GPS actually works better with the "Use Wireless Networks" box left unchecked, and 2) turn your GPS off when you aren't in need of it because it can be a significant drain on the battery.
ame thing happened to me.Last night I could not get my Gps to lock in jk6. I had been in V5 and had the same thing happen the night before. I tried gpsrestore and rebooting and pulling the battery etc. I flashed back to v5 and still the same result. Either no lock or it showed that I was in Long Island and actually I am in central fl. I tried changing some settings (auto config and ms based) to no avail. I than flashed back to V5 and at first it was the same and then after rebooting twice and pulling the battery it just mysteriously began to function again. I wont use the word work as it has never really worked well. It actually saw 11 and locked on 7 which is a new record for me. Like I said earlier in the post it had happened to me the same way the night before and thats when I flashed to jk6.After flashing it seemed to be operating as usual until las night. Strange that it would happen in both v5 and jk6 and at night both times, and that flashing to the other rom and pulling the battery would right the issue Does anyone have any idea what the issue is here?.
Edit: Just went out and used Cardio Trainer and it worked quite well as the gps seemed to function as well as it ever has.
Same problem everyone else is describing. My GPS has been working very well, then yesterday locks were taking a very long time and sometimes the location accuracy was 1000's of meters off. Tried again just now and it's back to quick locks with good accuracy.
Based on posts here and the TMO forum it seems to have been widespread.
Same problem everyone else is having however I have another problem as well.
Around the exact same time I had an issue with the GPS my ability to connect to a few different wireless networks was affected as well! I can't get on my home network at all, just gets hung up on 'obtaining IP address'. My old G1 running 2.2 can hop on the network without incident.
What the hell is Samsung up to?
Im having the exact same problems, i was on axura 2.05 when i first found my gps wasnt working i thought it was just temporary, got home tried again didnt work, flashed axura final, still didnt work, went back to stock jfd still didnt work, ji6 still didnt work, i thought my phones gps was bad or broke somehow i was in the 14 day window went to the tmobile store for an exchange (those guys are really clueless he told me that it was apps problem (google maps) and that my phone didnt have an actual gps -.- seriously where do they hire these guys) after shutting him up by simply showing the drop down GPS button he gave me a new phone. Fresh out the box stock ji6 and still no luck with gps, flashed axura 2.1 (jk6)now and obviously still not working so from what i went through its not the baseband difference since i went through jfd,ji6,jk2,fresh ji6,and jk6 and amazingly still no luck. Grr im mad
Edit : When using wifi my location locks instantly but with the GPS i cant get a lock and it would say im in Puerto Rico or Houston accurate to like 12200 meters lol and im in NY :T closest i got the NY i was somewhere in the water
Trying to see if there's something in common with those who are experiencing lock ups.
My crashes arent frequently but it has happened a few times
Seem like I am having some crashing, though it seems to be dependent on using data service with little or no 3G reception. 16gb Model.
My units is not crashing all the time but it does it at least once a day which is bad. It seems to be when trying to switch between using cell network and WiFi. Would be nice if it was fixable with firmware.
Mine hasn't crashed so far. I tried downloading Harvest Game and it went fine over wifi. Tried heavy browsing with music in bgrnd and that too was fine. Only issue was the Bluetooth not communicating to the car properly. Its been a week now.
ive crashed only once, which was in the newsroom app, i was also updating marketplace one time and instead of crashing it would just take me back to the start menu..
mine has been crashing quite a bit...16 gig less than 14 gig available...
In the first 36 hrs I had the phone, I spent at least half of it in the PC connect screen. The phone would not boot...well..sometimes. Then it would boot by itself...reboot rather.
I called MS, ZUNE support. They helped walked me through some basic steps. Apparently I was touching the side buttons, camera, volume down, while powering up. Not sure if this was true, but dam they could reproduce the PC connect everytime. Since that call, I was more careful about powering up and have had no problems since.
I do get a lag in IE on WiFi, sometimes, not often, but daily. I found a web page that always sends me back to the desktop.
But crashing.....I have to be honest and admit that most of the crashes...if not all, in the first 36 hrs, probably were user errors. Now, I'm not a novice. I own more smartphones than most people on this forum. And if the phone buttons are that sensitive, then something is not right. However, since I've grown accustomed to the button layout and sensitivity, I've not had a single malfunction.
I've also recognized that certain apps are prone to causing, umm....unexpected results. Maybe instead of voting on crashes...we should keep a list of app suspects....
I got 2 units.
The first one had the Wifi issue and was constantly crashing.
The second one the Wifi is good, and it never crashed.
Maybe is related?
It seems to me that my device crashes a lot when my Wifi is on

Same here, also 16GB model. Every crash I've had has either been related to the Marketplace, or it's happened when my rickety 3G connection had poor signal.
This sucks. Mine is crashing EVERYTIME I try to dl something related to xbox live (games) over wifi. Should I have this exchanged???
Crashes a lot. Sometimes back to back so after doing numerous battery pulls, I had mine switched out. Its always an app though that crashes it and the screen becomes unresponsive. Phone goes to home screen and the people hub is grayed out. Its not an os specific crash cuz my hd7 doesn't do that.
So far phone is mostly stable, crashes have been only with wifi enabled, and only had 1 other crash without wifi on. Been running for the last 3 days, no crash at all.
I have had my phone almost a week and have been noticing the crashing a bit more frequent. It always seems like when I am in the MP or using an app that requires retrieving data from the cloud.
I got mine since November... never saw it crashing
Only once it would not start...I had to remove the batteries and put them back on.
I have a feeling it goes with having it in your pocket for a long time.
Sometimes (happened twice in 3 month) the screen locks but it has something to do with static electricity, or rain (I switched on and off and it worked).
I got it upgraded to 32 GB by swapping the micro SD card.
Took a while to boot.... (I think it reformats the card) worked like a charm!
Fankly, it is the sexiest piece of hardware I've owned in a long time.
Much more stable than any phone I ever owned.
I've had my 16GB since the 28th. I have not had a single crash, freeze or hang in the 5 days I have been using it. OS performance wise, it has pretty much been perfect.
I am probably not a typical owner though. I was an existing T-Mo customer on the EM+ plan. I didn't have to call or activate the DVP with T-Mo. I just took the SIM out of my flip phone and put it into my DVP and was up and running. Since I am on EM+ and I paid full price for the phone, I am also not required to have a data plan and I haven't gotten around to adding one yet. Everything I have done is solely over Wifi. I think the fact that I don't have a data plan is going to wind up being the explanation for my lack of problems. I don't know if it is a Microsoft or Dell problem, but 3G and WiFi just don't seem to get along well on the DVP.
Even though I have been limited to Wifi, I have been using this thing constantly trying to get everything setup. I haven't had any Marketplace issues at all. I've been using the Facebook, Twitter and Netflix apps quite a bit. No Xbox Live stuff or YouTube app though. I installed the LastPass app and tested almost all of 50+ logins without any issues. All in all, I think I have given my DVP a fairly tough stress test and I honestly have to say it has passed with pretty high marks.
That's not to say my DVP is perfect though. I have had some bugs. The biggest for me is the cellular antenna. I get a mediocre phone signal in my apartment. My flip phone would hover between 2 and 3 bars out of 5. I get much worse reception on the DVP. I get a ton of No Service notices, especially when I pick it up. But it isn't just a death grip issue. I'll sit the phone on the arm of my couch and watch it fluctuate between No Service and 1 or 2 bars. If I want to make a call on the DVP, I have to take laps around my apartment trying to find a decent signal. Not fun. Outside of the dead zone that live in the reception is fine. If I get 5 bars, it stays at 5 bars no matter how I hold it. I also don't care for the SMS texting app. When I attempt to send a text while I have a low signal, I don't get a confirmation either way after I hit send. I sent 3 texts in a row out on Thursday afternoon and only 1 got through. It would have been nice to see a "Message Sent" or Message Failed" confirmation either way. I also can't import Contacts from my Sim. I see the box for it on my People Settings page, but it is greyed out. Very annoying. And I know it's a known issue with Microsoft, but the not being able to connect to a WiFi with a hidden SSID is just ridiculous.
I really haven't made up my mind yet on whether I am keeping my DVP. On the one hand, I really like WP7 and it seems like I got lucky and got one of the problem free DVP's. But I'm also not sure if I can live with the bad reception at home. I guess I'll just have to wait and see if anything interesting is announced at CES.
16GB and it locked up all of the time... It would just freeze there with whatever it was on the screen. That happened until I turned Wifi off. Now it's great. The only time that it crashed with wifi off was when I was running Beezz and it just hard locked for some reason.
So I would like to have Wifi... 3G coverage is spotty at best where I live. What are the chances of a firmware fix, ya think? I'm almost tempted to send it back to Dell... Even though I love it to death. Gosh that keyboard is amazing...
I sure hope it gets sorted out...
Can someone list the symptoms of crashing? Is it just screen freeze or apps won't launch when touched or something different? I had case y'day where except people, email and phone, none of the other apps would launch. When launched it would just return to the home screen right away. Then a battery pull fixed it. That was the first i had the issue since receiving the phone on 12/23. I have time till end of this week to decide on return or replacement.

Mike, have you received any calls on it yet? My experience has been that you can make outgoing calls all you want, but you need to tell T-Mo the new IMEI number to receive calls. That could also be why you haven't gotten a notification about the text messages.
When I called T-Mo to get the phone set up, they also told me about the available insurance plans (from $5.99/mo that covers the phone completely-loss/theft/damage/etc, to less than $2 for minimal coverage). I was on an out-of-contract plan too and had to pick up the phone at full price. My plan was phone+data, no messaging, so I only pay for texting. Everything done over WiFi or 3G has been great.
As for crashes, I think it's locked up 3 times now that required removing the battery and putting it back in. Those all happened within the first few days of owning it, but not since. (got it on the 23rd)
