UMA on Android 2.2 - Vibrant General

What's your excuse now T-mobile.

I have an unopened Vibrant sitting there right now, if it gets UMA, I will stop waiting for Froyo and open the damn thing in a heartbeat.

I was asked by 3 different reps if I ever used uma and if I had wifi last month.. I was very mean and rude, staying I didn't want to downgrade my phone and I couldn't use it on the vibrant... So maybe its on the way... Plus look at the phone they are demoing... Vibrant..

Did you notice in the video he's using a Vibrant? I wonder if this will be part of the Froyo update for Vibrants from T-Mobile?
Clearly he has: Vibrant, Froyo (according to their required specs), Sims 3, UMA support.
Cool.

What "excuse"? It's CLEARLY running on a T-Mobile Samsung Vibrant. Android 2.2 for the Vibrant nor this UMA tool has been released yet.
Always focusing on the negative. It's sickening.

Its thought a third party though. The company that dev the software is not part of t-mobile.
They have already released it for 2.1, but they just released it for 2.2.

Which other US carriers have existing UMA infrastructure? AT&T, Sprint or Verizon? How does none of the above sound? Better yet, which US carrier preloads their Galaxy S with Sims 3, Avatar, MobiTV and the Kindle app. I'll wait

UMA on the Vibrant would be incredible. This is the only feature I miss from my old Blackberry.

The downside of course is the battery. My regular use gives me about 20% by the time I get home. I dead to think what would happen with wireless on.

Your 3G and cellular radio would be off, so in theory you'd get better battery life from UMA.

Being on WiFi increases battery standby 10 fold. The only thing that drains battery is leaving it off when the screen is off and leaving it on when you're not connected to a hotspot.

Please someone explain what uma does/is...

You will actually save battery life because your radio will not have to travel over a long distance to the cell tower.
I had UMA with my old Blackberry and it saved turns of battery when I was using it.

UMA sends voice, data, text, everything over the wifi in your house. Kinds of like VOIP but not VOIP.

Thanks laristech! Greatly appreciated!
And sweet! Sounds like it could save a lit of battery this way

Part of my issue is that I work in hospitals which means poor building penetration and inconsistent wireless so I would likely need both on with my phone doing a lot of switching. Not the phone's fault.

Switching from 2G from WiFi resulted in my calls being dropped 50% of the time. It's even worse with 3G

Same here. Absolutely loved it when I went to the mountains and was one of the few people that could use their cell phones.

Yeah, I loved it on my Blackberry. I still have good 3g signal at home, but UMA is the bomb, like having a femtocell without having to buy some overpriced extraneous hardware.

WiFi calling on the Vibrant

Anyone know if it is going to be possible to port the WiFi calling app over from the G2 or MT4G to the Vibrant? I really need that functionality!
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
flash one of the new 2.2 roms and you will have wifi calling
Yeah, flash a 2.2 from the dev section.
Looks like wifi calling will be added to the official update whenever that comes out.
Yeah, I'm guessing we haven't been completely left out when it comes to updates and features, just low on their priority list. Wifi calling on the 2.2 roms works great, I just wish it were like uma on blackberrys which doesn't use your plan minutes.

UMA on the BlackBerries works the exact same way. The only way to not use your plan minutes is if you have the old grandfathered unlimited UMA plan.
It's ok, my room is mostly "Poor WiFi signal" which is annoying. It's not that bad.. I have good enough signal as it is though.

This, Wimax is quite the joke in terms of building penetration and connection. When I look on the Sprint map I have 4g service available, I can't even connect to the **** outside let alone inside. Hell it's so bad I don't even care if custom roms/ports don't have 4g because I can't use it.

Samsung stratosphere

So I have a opportunity to use the stratosphere (temporarily) for a few weeks. I'm an Epic user. I got to say that this phone is the Epic done right. I like how the usb port is on the bottom of the phone which doesn't block the headphone jack with a L shaped charger. The phone is running Gingerbread stock. LTE definitely has better coverage in my area. The back piece is textured and feels good in your hands. It's definitely the Epic done right but it's late to the party. For $99 its not bad.

A coworker got two stratospheres for free on launch day at radio shack. Great phone for free! The battery looked different to me. Jealous watching him pull 13mbps down on LTE.
I love my Epic. And if I had to switch to Verizon, I would want this phone. At least until I could afford a nice, new, shiney phone with a bigger screen and no slide out keyboard. I'm getting so tired of the thickness of my phone for a keyboard I don't use.
I think it's kinda weird, though, that Verizon is getting this, considering I thought that the Epic is nearing it's EOL.

Realistic timeframe for ICS?

I'm wondering how long you guys think it will take for ICS to get ported to the Epic. I mean, realistically, it took us the better part of a year to get CM7 (and it's still only a release candidate). I'm pretty invested in this phone, having bought a car dock and game gripper for it. But it seems to be such an oddball in terms of development. My buddy's got a Fascinate, and seeing his 4.0 screenshots has been making me very jealous. Been thinking of trading in for a Nexus S or Evo Shift. Thoughts? And I hate to pimp, but if you've got either of those phones, and are looking for a Boost Mobile Epic, I'd consider a trade. PM me.
While it's on my mind, the aforementioned Fascinate guy stated that he gets 600k downstream on VZW when tethering, 1meg in good signal area. I've never even approached that...fastest I ever got was 200k, usually closer to 100k. Is this a difference in the radios between Galaxy models, or a symptom of VZW vs. Sprint?

I mean it ain't gold yet. Don't get me wrong, it's a huge step for this phone, but we could realistically be looking at a 12 month gap between the time when CM7 was official, to the time when it was official for the Epic. I don't think I'd enjoy waiting that long for CM9, y'know?
