I came up with this idea due to mbvarian's landscape fix for manila using mortscript. However, that thread is nearly dead and im hoping my problem can get resolved and we can see a cool app out of this.
Concept: Choose which program launches and closes when opening/closing your keyboard, with exceptions for specific applications (like lock orientation, minimize, close, etc)...
Why im requesting:
Im using spb mobile shell and love my custom portrait layout, id love to open the keyboard from the today screen and launch my secondtoday layout... when I close the keyboard, minimize secondtoday, and if i open it again it unhides secondtoday... the benefit here is a lightning fast switch between layouts, especially if you can lock the programs orientation in memory individually.
Other examples of how this might be useful:
1) From the dialer screen, you could set a mortbutton menu to pop up when you open the screen to give you a add number, contacts, recent calls, call voicemail, etc.
2) From calendar, opening keyboard could automatically switch to create a new appointment
3) From file explore, you could set mortbuttons to display your favorite folders, i.e. start up, storage card, windows, start menu, pictures
4) From text messages, it could launch a new text message, close it and sends and closes...
Im sure you all get the idea... I just think it would be cool to take a little bit more control of our phones by adding some additional control over a keyboard that is taken for granted a bit. I mean ftouchsl and ftouchflo are great, but if the touchscreen has that level of in-depth control, i think the keyboard could too...
Feedback is greatly appreciated... and if anyone can help on my spb problem, please message me the modded mortscript... the spbwatcher i think is whats affecting my results.
bump... anyone?
I would love something like this, but im not sure how easy it would be, a mortscript might be able to do it.
A cool app would be, when the phone is suspended, if you turn it on by sliding the keyboard it opens a new textmessage, or some other app you use with keyboard open. But if you slide it when the phone is already on, it doesnt do anything, so as not to disrupt the app you are currently using.
Ok, by now you probably know HTC's nice text selection tool. To use it, write some words in a HTC application (like the text message composer), then tap-and-hold somewhere in the text. You get one handle to move around, or two if you want to select a precise part.
But there's more. Change "HKLM/Software/HTC/TextSelection/EnableMagnifier" from 0 to 1. Now activate the text selection tool again as described above and try moving the single handle around...
Nice catch. Can be helpful in tight selections. I've been looking through the reg. So much stuff disabled... Why does HTC do this? They could've placed it as an option on SMS menu...
Thanks. Added to tips thread.
Maybe they disable it so we at XDA have something to do until HSPL is released
Some other simple but cool things I discovered:
* You can use the album app to crop pictures. Just pinch-to-zoom until the part you want fills the screen, then tap the screen, tap the icon on the bottom right and choose the second option from the menu. In Dutch it's called 'Schermafbeelding opslaan'. It will save a cropped copy of your pic.
* Here's a registry entry I found: "HKLM/Software/HTC/Manila/InternetPush/EnablePushInternet". It's set to 0 by default. I'm not really interested in push internet, so I haven't experimented with this, but it seems you can enable it if you want.
* Sometimes touch scrolling gets in the way of selecting text. If you want to select text, the solution depends on the context, but to start you just tap-and-hold anywhere:
-- In Opera, you can switch text selection on/off in the context menu;
-- In some apps (like while reading an e-mail message) you get a pop-up menu where the first option is 'make selection' ('selectie maken' on my Dutch device);
-- In Word, just before the pop-up menu appears, you see this: '[T]'. As soon as it appears, move your finger and you'll be able to select text!
* If you like the Footprints app but prefer full size pictures to those square 'polaroids', there's an option to save a full sized copy whenever you create a 'Footprint' (Footprints tab -> Menu -> Settings).
* The 'me' entry in the People app stores your 'owner' info. I know this is widely known by now, partly because I've been posting it everywhere, but I still see so many people complaining they can't register their applications (Resco stuff, SKtools)... because the can't find the old owner info icon. I have registered both Resco Explorer and SKtools perfectly fine without ever bringing the owner info icon back.
I haven't ever been able to get the Text Selection sliders to work on a custom rom even after setting the registry value to 1.
This is an awesome feature and I can't understand why it doesn't work.

you know it only works in text messaging, right? (well, some other htc apps too, apparently, but i couldn't name another one i've seen it in)
Yes of course... I'm aware that it only works in the realm of Sense specifically mail and text. I can do the standard selection thing but I just can't seem to get the sliders.
Any ideas?
hmm, well a common mistake I've come across a few times is people not pressing select the first time.
firstly go type some text into a new text message. (not sure where the idea it works in email came from, certainly doesn't on mine.)
ok, press and hold should bring up a cursor and the words "select|select all.
use the single sljder to set the start(or end, whichever) press 'select' nd now a second slider should join the first, enabling you to select.
Thanks for the responses guys, but as it turned out, I didn't realise that Energy ROMs are stripped of the HTC Messaging Module and that seems to be the only place where this 'feature' works.
It's a shame that's it's not available system-wide considering how easy it makes life.
I installed the HTC Messaging Client and voila, it was it there! but that excitement was short lived considering how bad HTC's messaging client is.
hah couldn't agree more. with the magnifier too its great ,, just never gets used.
Hi,
I've just purchased a HTC Leo, and i've some questions because some features of my old HTC Diamond 2 aren't here anymore... And i want them back
First of all, i want the little arrow in the up right corner of the screen, that allow to see open applications and close them. How to get it back?
Then, i noticed that the SMS manager is now a custom HTC menu, and i want the old SMS "outlook" back. How to do?
I want be able to access to the Windows setings old menu too, not the HTC one.
Is there any registry tweak or application for change these features?
Please help me, because i am dissapointed and about to sell my Leo and use again my Diamond 2...

Did you use search? These questions have been asked (and mostly answered) before, and can be easily found around here.

-> 7. Get the old Task Manager Back (works great)

Last post in this thread sounds promising.
I want be able to access to the Windows setings old menu too, not the HTC one.
From HTC settings tab, right softkey 'Menu' -> 'All Settings'.
Thanks for your answer.
I noticed that i don't have the Windows calandar anymore, but only the HTC one, wich i really hate.
Ive make a shortcut in "Programs" folder, for "calandar.exe" and it works fine, but the shortcut don't have icon, and is ugly...
How can i put the calandar icon to this shortcut?

You can go to Start->OutLook->Calendar (This is the regular windows calendar)
Or - with htc-sense - you can add a shortcut to the "Today" page (Where the clock is) by tapping an empty link place, and selecting the calendar from the list of suggested programs.
Enjoy
Love my HD2, but am wondering if anyone knows of a shortcut to get to call forwarding or an app to turn on and off call forwarding, without having to go through all the screens and toggle?
TY
Andrew
I would like to know this aswell, if anyone out there can help ??
any news on this one? It woul be a very handy app.
If you use Launcher Pro as your launcher then you can open that page with an activity shortcut.
Long-hold the home page to add a shortcut and go:
Shortcuts, Activities, Dialer, Call forwarding
It still takes a few seconds to populate that page, but it has to get the information from your provider every time you start it, so there's nothing you can do about that. It is, however, a shortcut to that page.
If you don't use Launcher Pro then I don't believe you have the ability to add activity shortcuts.
I know its been a while since this was requested. I have just changed my car and the new one has an old factory fitted Motorola startac fitted as a factory option. Rather than mess and fit a new hands free kit I was wanting to forward my HD2 to the Startac.
I have just found the way to do what you require. Firstly use your file explorer (i used resco) to unhide hidden files. Then look in the windows folder on your device and look for CMcallforward. You should then be able to send this to your start menu. Im using Cookies Home tab so I was then able to add this as a quick link.
Hope this helps, cant get much better than a one button option
I've heard and read so many good comments about ANDROID, I decided it was time to make the switch and I went for the X10 yesterday. I was very excited !!
But after one day of use I am starting to feel frustrted... the more I play with the phone, the more I feel trapped and lost: I need help !!
FILE SYSTEM
- A file explorer was not present (a bad vibe went down through my spine...), so I downloaded a couple of "file explorers" from the market and tried to explore the phone's contents but I couldn't
How can I explore/browse the phone's folders and files ?? (not the SD card, but the phone itself), hidden / system files included ??
EDIT Rooting + Estrongs File Explorer solves this
- How do I save content into the phone's memory ?? (not the SD card)
EDIT Rooting + Estrongs FE solves this
APPS FOLDER
- How can I customize the apps folder ??
- How to rearrange the shortcuts ??
- How can I edit a shortcut ??
- How can I create a shortcut for an app listed as "installed" but lacking a shortcut to be launched (no shortcut for voice recorder or latitude) ??
EDIT Estrongs FE can create shortcuts to the "home" at least...
CONTACTS
- How can I sort my contacts ?? (Last/First name)
- Where is the option to assign each one's facebook pic to its contact ??
USABILITY
- How to enable haptic feedback ??
EDIT Only the keyboard can provide haptic feedback, still finding a way to enable it everywhere, throughout the whole system
- How do I choose which folder to save an attachment to ??
- How do I select text from an email to copy it to another application ?? (email app)
- How do I save copyed text into a text note ??
EDIT Third party note apps solve this
- Double tap won't zoom, pinching won't zoom, but this thing is capacitive !!
EDIT Yes I know I canzoom with th onscreen buttons, an OS refresh will solve this
- Nothing happens when I click the battery icon. How to create a shortcut to my current battery charge percent ??
EDIT Yeah this is one of those "I have to switch my mind from WM to android" ones, so consider it solved
- And where is the battery page at all ??
EDIT Found. I am such a stupid android noob LOL !!
- How do I multi-select items (emails, messages, contacts) to delete, copy or move them ??
- Where is "google talk" ?? (my friends with android phones keep asking me to open "google talk" but I can't find it on the phone nor market)
EDIT I was able to install gtalk after rooting, had to search for the APK myself
ANDROID is supposedly "open" and "user friendly"
Being new to Android, it' probably my fault/lack of experience only.
Am I missing something here ??
What's going on ??
I am as confused as Adam on mother's day
.
the same thing happened to me xD
and I know you and I come from an x1 XD
is not that hard, you have to check the options for the 3g if not say bye to the battery gauge also to your data plan if you have o.0
I suggest you open the User Manual that came with your phone.
Most of your questions will be answered in it. There's no double-tap to zoom in 1.6, but will arrive with the 2.1 update later this month. Having a capacitive screen has absolutely 0.000000% to do with it.
Also, a lot of your questions can be solved by a "Long Press"... aka, hold on the item you want to select for a second.

If it only were as easy as a "long press"... huh...
But your second point is valid: some of my issues with the phone could be related to the old OS... maybe an OS refresh will help
@alankstiyo:
Indeed I went X1 -> X2 -> Topaz -> HD2 -> back to X2
This is my first android experience and it is not fulfilling my expectances, maybe they were too high...

For the system files I think you have to root your phone first, and install Astro File Manager.
You can manage your file (system or SD card) there, including copy, paste, move, etc.

Thanks !!
Root was EASY and FAST (aprox 5 seconds) with this little APK:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8259140&postcount=174
Those complicated step-by-step stickyed rooting threads should be replaced by this simple, fast and easy APK that does everything at once and automatically
NOW I HAVE FILE ACCESS, YESSSSS
Let's start solving all the other issues
Grab I am happy to see you again after moving from x1. Hope to see some development from you here

First of all, what are u trying to save? If you're trying to save an

- How do I select text from an email to copy it to another application ??
What is the another application that you're are talking about? I think
different apps have different style for handling this matter
- How do I save copyed text into a text note ??
Just long press on the text note's screen, and choose 'paste'. I've tried
to copy my messages text to easy note, and it's works.
- Double tap won't zoom, pinching won't zoom, but this thing is capacitive !!
What are you trying to zoom? For photos in mediascape you just have to
tap twice, for browser there's an option tools that allow you to zoom in or out. In Dolphin browser
you can zoom in and out by gesture. Pinching won't work, because X10 doesn't support multitouch
- Nothing happens when I click the battery icon. How to create a shortcut to my current battery
charge percent ??
Use the 'battery indicator pro' apps, you can find it in Market. The apps
can show you how much percent that your battery's life left, the battery temperature (so you don't
overheat the phone).
Or you can type this at your dialer : *#*#4636#*#*. It'll show you the battery information along
other information about your phone

What battery page?

Yep, the timescape feature is cool. But I don't know why ppl doesn't like it a lot.
If you want to add icons to your default desktop, just press the 'menu' button from your phone (located lower left of the phone), then select 'add' (there's a 'plus' icon), then you can choose to add your application shortcuts, widgets, or folders.
To move the icon, just long press the icon you want (till the phone vibrate) and just slide to move it.
