Samsung Vibrant Tethering - HELP ME!! AHHHHHH!

To put it simply, I have the latest OTA update from T-Mobile and the most RECENT VERSION of Samsung Kies (1.5.3...93_83 I think).
Problem is, I cannot tether my Vibrant using Kies. I do not want cooked ROM nor "Flash" my phone.
Can somebody please walk me through step by step on how to set it up so my laptop can use my phone's internet access?! I've read some posts about drivers, setting up a dial-up connection but I don't know. I have Win 7 64 bit version also.
If anybody can walk me through it, I would appreciate it.

Have you tried an app like Pdanet or Easytether? Those may require root access (not sure).
I used to use Pdanet via usb before joining the dark side and flashing custom Roms( yeah, Mobile AP is the win!). Its only limitation is that you have buy the full version to use secure sites. I think Easytether may be cheaper or free (not sure, never used it myself). Personally, if I were you I'd just flash a new ROM, but I understand if you don't want to go that route.

if you're going to use the kies to tether make sure you use the UK version. the US doesn't work for tether. you don't need to root.

Well how can I work the UK version for it to work?

this link always works for me. no root needed.
I can't get USB tethering to work at all with any firmware newer than JFD.
Nobody could find me a solution that didn't use an app, and even UK Kies wouldn't work with my phone.
I finally went out and bought a used G1 for $50, threw the TMo 2.2 OTA on it and I've been using that to tether.
D/L Rom manager.
1. Root phone. (per the Vibrant General sticky.)
2. Install Tethering using Rom Manager. (per the same sticky.)
Works great.
Really. This can be done in less than 4 minutes if you know what you're doing already.
I'd say 10-15 if you haven't done it before.

And this works with JI6?
Edit: If you mean this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756804 isn't that just wifi tether?
Check out pda.net app its a pretty simple tether...also I've read that it runs faster if you have the samsung drivers installed on your computer which is a prerequisite to rooting

Froyo root? Superboot? Recovery?

I keep looking and browsing the web for information about rooting the streak but so far i've only manage to find one for 1.6 or 2.1. Does anybody know if the superboot works on froyo and if theres a recovery image yet just in case? My phone came unlocked with froyo pre-installed and has a 12*** something version. I apologize if this has been ask before or if im in the wrong sub-forum. Thank you

Z4Root for 2.2
Searched for Z4Root numerous times on the market but to no luck. I keep getting a doodle app. Do you know if the superboot would work? Thanks for the reply

heh, it was taken off the market. oh well, find the apk.
Search google for universal androot 1.6.2 beta. Worked for me. You may have to press root my phone more than once because it doesnt always do iton first try. If you cant find it then pm me and ill email it to u
Found z4root apk and works perfectly. Rooted froyo and now looking for some decent rom. thanks for the tips y'all

i think z4root is better than universal androot since it installs busybox and does it quite well, it also works on alot more devices. besides that, they are pretty much the same, rooting tools. use what you like that works. seems like things like z4root, androot, busybox, and superuser where all taken off the market just before gingerbread came out.
One thing that keeps bothering me when people work out / find a solution . . . they don't post what they did, where they found the program / software / driver !! or what they did to fix the issue.
SHARE, z4root is off the market, so where did you locate the download ?
z4root isn't working with the latest OTA update build 318. Niether does universal androot.
Superoneclick will root 318 search xda for the link

I used SuperOneClick. However, I'm still on the "stock" 305 version. I never upgraded. SuperOneClick worked just fine to root.

[Q] Trying to root on mac...

Trying to root my epic on my mac and cant seem to find anything that really seems to work, I am really starting to doubt my own intelligence at this point and really don't want to screw up my new phone....any help or a rooting for morons walkthrough would be helpful, thanks so, so much!
you could always run windows virtualized on your mac and do it that way
Try this thread.

it worked, thank you so much, i dont know why i couldnt find that before, thanks a lot!
You could have also used an app called z4root.
You are welcome. It can be difficult to find info in the forum but that is the link I used to root my epic back in April and I had the linked stored so it was easy to send it your way.
Z4root works if you just want root but if you want to install custom roms you need clockwork. The link I have allows you to root and instal clockwork.

If you downloaded root but it didnt actually root your phone, this may be your prob

My problem was that I would download SuperOneClick and it would not give me actual root. The SuperUser icon was in my app drawer but if I tried to use any apps that required root access they wouldnt let me. When I opened Super Manager and clicked "Enable Root Access" a popup would come up and it would say something like "Your ROOT image will not work" or something like that.
The problem was this:
I found out that I had downloaded the most recent version of SuperOneClick. This version will not give root if you had the official 2.2. update. You needed to download the 1.5.5 version.
I hope this will help anyone who made the same mistake as me.
anybody? im freaking out since no one else has had this problem.
Try enable USB debugging
Settings > Applications > USB Debugging > Enable.
You should repost the OP with the solution in case someone else has the problem, if not people will search in vain.

good idea. Ill do it now.
Thanks alecjake, I am on ka6 and have heard there were issues with the latest SuperOneClick. Odd that an older version can root froyo but the newer version can't. Very helpful advice.

One thing you also want to do, is after using superoneclick is to reboot. That way root actually works.

I also have problems with rooting my andriod, I ran Titanium Backup but it required root access to work, so I downloaded z4root and universal root apk, it says that my phone is rooted but still Titanium Backup cant detect any root access.
Also my Link2sd App(app2sd alike) also requires root, I think I rooted my phone but still doesn't work. A noob like me really need your help guys.. thanks in advance..
BTW i am running 1.6 andriod firmware.
Easiest way I've found is to use AIO Vibrant Toolbox. I'm on my phone so I can't link it but just go to the development section and look for the post with the program name in the thread title. It's super easy to root with it. Just follow the included directions!

1.6? do you have a t959 vibrant? if you do, you need to get to stock 2.1 JFD, then you can follow these instructions:

or go with the AIO toolbox which is more user friendly

has ANY ONE rooted/flashed the AT&T flipout yet?

Got an AT&T flipout. Motoblur is horrible, otherwise a solid phone. I've had trouble finding a WORKING rooting guide on here. Has any one successfully flashed or rooted the flipout in the US?
I've been a G1 owner so I'm not a beginner over flashing/root access. If I could just get it rooted I can live with using titanium backup to uninstall all the **** apps.
Any help?
Theres a rooting guide on here, for att you dont have the unknown sources option in devtools so youll have to install the apk over adb but once i installed the app it worked like a charm for me

the first post has all I needed to root
and for adb its pretty easy to learn what you need using what google has out there, there might be some moto drivers I'm forgetting about, but if there are I probably found them on here, just explore a bit more
