[Q] App Inventor on HD2 - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hello, has anyone tryied to use an HD2 with app inventor?? If so, what is the procedure? When i am trying to connect my phone with the blocks editor, the java enviroment cannot see any device. HTC sync is setup and recognised as Dream. Also ADB drivers are setup, but when i am going from app inventor to block editor, a message appears and says "Please locate the adb command on your computer and enter the full path here". I am typing the path of the app inventor on my computer "C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\appinventor-extras" and then the java enviroment continues. I am running 7 64bit.

Sorry, i am a newbie to the android platform. After some search i found that i need the android sdk.. After installation, the message dissapeared but the blocks editor cannot still find my phone. Has anyone actually used an HD2 with app inventor?

Can you please share some details? for example what programs/drivers/sdk needs the app inventor? installing procedure if its not a trouble for you, what rom are you using and in which mode you put your phone when you connect it with the usb cable, so the blocks editor can recognise the hd2?
thanks in advance.

chuckydroid rom with Hyperdroid and Bangsters Build work. I have to use I.E. because firefox will not work for me. I simply turn the phone on, no special modes or anything and hit connect while the screen is on.. I installed that software they ask you to install before you start, nothing more.

I am having the same problems as described above really but using firefox and linux (ubuntu). No joy getting the app inventor to work witha desire based rom. I am going to try using Chrome to see if that makes any difference and its just a firefox based issue.

The only problem you're suffering right now is that the path has to look like this
C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\appinventor-extras\adb.exe
You have to write the full path including this file
Have fun. It's a great programm and makes a lot of fun
Edit: There's a how to on the page to set up this path again.

i had to update my version of java to java 6.23,also appinventor works better with chrome browser, surprise, surprise google software talking to google phone through google browser to googles servers...

I'm trying the App Inventor, and I can run things I'm tinkering with. I did one of the tutorials, but when I run it on my HD2, with AmericanAndroid, it is too small.
The app has black blank space on both side, and the bottom. It is probably a little more than half the screen.
I think it is the Android device driver. (But, I'm not sure.)
So, I followed some instructions to download drivers for my device, but the HD2 (on HTC's web page) doesn't have Android drivers. So, I probably need to download them for another HTC device (or something?). Any suggestions?
Or, am I going in the wrong direction, and need to do something else entirely.

Anyone know of an idiots guide?

I've just about given up. I downloaded all these programs, drivers, other stuff. I thought I had all the required software. I tried to run adb.exe and it just opens a command prompt and closes right away. I've tried searching and all the guides says download this....this..and this..once you have it all. And it starts from there.
The problem is i downloaded everything and I don't know if its working properly to start adb.
I hate this.
I've even thought about downloaded a whole other OS and running it from my USB drive to see if it's easier.
Anyone know of a good how to video?
I know that's what i'll be making as soon as I get this up and running.
Are you actually running adb through a command prompt or just double clicking the exe?

take a look.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rTOy5oN0GM
use cmd to run it
Start -> Run -> Type cmd -> Enter
cd whatever/directory/adb.exe/is/in
adb
you should just add the android tools directory to your PATH makes life much easier.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Yep editing the path got it to work for me.

if you are having that much issue setting the correct path, just go to your system 32 and copy over the CMD.EXE to the folder you are working in with Android. And then launch CMD from there.
Or just type into command prompt
PATH = %PATH%;C:/Android/Folder/Youre/Working/With/
EDIT:
I just watched your video. You have some problems in there
First, you aren't setting a new path, you are (attempting) to change your working directory in that video, however you are not doing it right.
You have to use the 'cd' command
C:\Current\Work\Space > cd C:\Change\to\this\space
C:\Change\to\this\space > adb devices
bleh bleh bleh bleh
But it would be better to just do the above method.
In most cases, the instructions are pretty clear. If you read the instructions on installing the SDK, it tells you how to set the path.
http://developer.android.com/sdk/installing.html
If you follow instructions, then you should be good to go.
If not, then you should be able to do something like a google query for "set path variable windows < whatever kind of windows you're running >"
If you're having a problem getting that stuff done, then maybe you should rethink rooting your phone. I don't know that anyone has bricked a G2 yet, but LOTS of folks bricked G1s. I think it's only a matter of time before someone figures out how to thoroughly break a G2.
"Just to add, if you take adb.exe and adbwinapi.dll and copy or move them to the \windows\system32 directory you can run adb from any dos directory prompt."
Also, add the "ADB" directory path as a system variable in windows...
To do this right-click on "My Computer" and select Properties. Next select the Advanced tab(Advanced Settings in Vista) then select Environment Variables.
Click "New" under System Variables and add the following:
Variable: adb
Value: C:\android\tools
If you happen to upgrade to Win7 you can easily open the CMD by shift right-click inside the window itself.....applying the path automatically for you.
You will also have too use these drivers located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=802316
or
Use notepad++ to edit that file and add the following lines to the "google.ntxhe "" and the "google.ntamd64" sections:
Code:
;T-Mobile G2 %SingleAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0C91 %CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0C91&MI_01 ;
Save the file, reinstall drivers, and done...

Thanks, looks like I'll be waiting it out. I didn't think it took this much know how to get sdk and adb running properly. I was able to change the path but ran into another brick wall. I type in abd devices to see if it was recognized and nothing. Like i said, I'll be waiting it out until a more permanent route can be found, and more support for rooting is available. Besides I don't think anyone wants to hold my hand and walk me thought the whole thing. It gets annoying, believe me I know. I'll be doing a how to video once I learn to get it all working and when a permanent root is available. I'll learn on XP and make the video using my Win 7.

The G2 isn't included in the current adb drivers that you download separately/with the SDK. You have to edit the inf file to have the G2 recognized. There has been at least 1, maybe a few threads with the lines to add here. I think there's a thread titled something like "I can't get adb to work with my phone" or something like that.
looks like i was doing it right. I was typing "abd" instead of 'adb" it founy device.
Now I guess the have to start sending the files over....
I typed "adb devices" and it picked up my device. with my phone's id number.
I am also about to give up. Some of us are new to Android.. we don't understand SDK and ADB and all these other programs. I do plenty enough reading.. but for some reason can't get these programs to run on Windows 7 x64.
I mean is their a newbs guide for the G2.. for rooting and such?
Yeah there is but you have to read like three guides and watch two videos to fnd everything you need. Ill try to make a quick how to after I finish up mine. I just have to push the apps/install the apps. Did you find the java jdk version. And do the commands on your computers cmp?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I always used this guide:
[GUIDE] ADB, Fastboot, and Nandroid for Noobs
Hope it helps
Use the drivers in post 11 in this thread
Unless you rooted your G2.........adb shell will NOT work.
ADB shell needs root access
Thanks, I have already rooted my phone. Unfortunately my wifi tethering doesn't work. It always says no network access so I'm just going to leave the phone as is until the update comes in.

Eclipse, Adb, Device = ADB crash

I am trying to get a development environment setup and running into all sorts of problems with ADB when I have an actual device attached to the system. I am using eclipse and can use the emulators with no problems, until I attach an actual device to the system. At that point, even when trying to debug on the emulator, ADB keeps crashing. I can start a debug session on the actual device, but if I try to switch to the DDMS view, ADB crashes.
I am running on windows 7 and have even go so far as to do a complete reinstall of the system and only install the development tools only to have this problem show up again. I can't believe that this is normal, how could anything get developed with this type of issue?
I have been searching for answers and not been able to find anything helpful. I restart ADB only for it to immediately crash again. All the software is updated to the most recent versions. This problems occurs on both my desktop and laptop so don't think it is a hardware issue with my systems. Only thing really in common is the device, my EVO.
Any help would be appreciated. This is driving me nuts. I need to get this working for some projects but I feel like I am pounding my head on a brick wall trying to get it to work.
If this isn't the best place for this thread, could you please point me in the right direction? Thanks.
First navigate to where adb is located within cmd prompt.. [depends on what tutorial you followed if any at all] Either C:\android-sdk-tools\tools or if you used the .exe installer then itll be in your Program Files\android\android-sdk-tools\platform-tools\.. when you are in the directory of the adb location in cmd prompt runt the following code.. "adb devices" to see if adb is working at all.. it sounds like it might be a ROM issue unless adb is missing files it needs which i ran into that problem.

ADB is working fine like this. My phone shows up in the devices command. I can shell to it. Push/Pull files. All with no problems. It's not until I try running a debug session from eclipse (either in the emulator or on the device) that it crashes.
No one here that can help?
To the best of my knowledge, you either use the Emulator OR the phone.
At least that's what I do. Before I plug in my phone, I shut down any Emulator(s) that I might be running.
Also make sure to eject phone (Mac) or stop the device (Windows).
Never had a problem.

The problem is I can't use EITHER when the phone is connected. So even if I wanted to debug on the phone, I can't.
i have the same problem, and it drives me crazy, i can't get a specific reasong, once i uninstalled google upadter and the adb works fine, second time i uninstalled Google chrome and it work fine until yesterday, today it is back to crashing, i dont know what else to do
Edit: my problem started after upgrading to android 2.3

I have pretty much given up on getting it to work right. I have a linux box that I set up the development environment on and it is working fine there. I'm thinking it could be something with 2.3 also. Going to see if I can find the 2.2 and do the setup with that.

Try going into your sdk/tools folder and setting adb to run as administrator, expecially for win 7 (leave it open then go back to eclipse). I had the same problem and I also closed the emulator when debuging on the device.......don't know, but maybe it will work for you also. Good luck!

Yes it is. But I do have the 32bit version of all the development system. I have an extra drive on my system that I can try installing the 32bit version of Windows 7 on and see if I have any better luck with that.

I had someone suggest it could be a custom rom or kernel issue. I am running an evo with a custom rom and kernel. I'm not sure where the adb part is implemented but I might be able to try stock later this week. Strange that it works fine on my linux box with the custom. Probably the linux version of adb is more robust and can handle the errors better.
I'm having similar issues on Windows 7 32 and 64 bit. I'm using the 2.3 tools.
The interesting thing is that ADB only crashes when I try to run (not debug) one particular application (one I wrote) inside Eclipse. I have 3 other projects that work just fine, no crashing.
Even with the one app, it starts out working ok, then it'll start crashing when I try to run it, and then it'll crash anytime eclipse is up and that program is running on the phone!
Completely wiping the data partition fixes it for a while, but that's obviously a crappy solution.
Wiping the Cache/Dalvik Cache doesn't do anything.
Wiping the data for the com.android.debugtool (is this even related to ADB? seems too coincidental) doesn't do anything.
Uninstalling, or just killing my app on the phone, stops the crashing, until the program is installed, or starts, again.
Turning off and on USB Debugging a few times seems to sometimes help, but only for a while.
Rebooting also can help stop the crashing for a while, but not every time.
I turned the logging in eclipse up to verbose, but I don't see anything in the console window that seems to offer any clues.
Is the problem with ADB, or with DDMS? (DDMS is what eclipse runs to do everything on your device, DDMS then calls ADB). Because without eclipse open, adb works fine. Or is it a specific command send to ADB through DDMS? Is there any way to find out exactly what DDMS is doing with ADB?
Does anyone know if there's another "debugging" cache on the phone somewhere that, if cleared, may fix the crashing?

your reply can be summarize in few points:
1- its a library or code you used in that app that crashes ADB.exe (as u said only this app)
2- it maybe an app in the phone, the apps i suspect is SU(for rooted phones) or Whatsapp(because it's runs a service that stops as soon as the USB mode activated)
i hope this Thread doesn't die, because it's the only one on the WEB.
One thing I checked between the v7 and v8 of the SDK is adb.exe is the same version in each of these. So the thought about the DDMB being a possible culprit is a good possibility. Because outside of eclipse debugging, I have no problems with ADB at all.

[LINUX] - How To: UBUNTU on Dell Streak

EDIT: I can't post to XDA due to the fact that i just signed up for an account, but look at fards' copy of my post to see how to install Ubuntu on your Dell Streak
Here's Pats Post on modaco;
although it would be nicer to keep development discussion to just one thread, the more constructive input the better
Hello All,
I'm attempting to natively port Ubuntu and/or Debian to the Streak. With it being such a powerful device there really is no reason it SHOULDN'T be running a “desktop” operating system. However, implementing his is quite a difficult task, so if any and everyone's help would be very much appreciated.
In the mean time, this is my first guide on how to get ubuntu running piggyback on the Dell Streak. After quite a while (and numerous different trials), I have found that this is the easiest way to get Ubuntu Mobile up and running fast. All commands can be done through either ADB shell or the terminal emulator on the phone.
This was *NOT* done entirely by me, but is a culmination of the effort of lots of people in the android community. I just modified it so that it would work on the Streak.
**This Installation DOES NOT install Linux natively, and as such is should not be destructive to your Android system, however i take absolutely no responsibility for anything that happens and you do this COMPLETELY at your own risk**
Here is how to do it:
1) Root your phone. There are plenty of guides on how to do it, so find one and get root access on your phone.
**YOUR PHONE MUST BE ROOTED. THIS WILL NOT WORK WITHOUT IT.**
2) Download Ubuntu Mobile Bundle: http://uploading.com/files/bbm6b311/ubuntu.zip/
This contains an image of the filesystem as well as other necessary scripts to get it working.
2) Busybox - Install Titanium Backup from Android Market - if you press the "Problems" button it will install Busybox on your phone for you (Feel free to uninstall Titanium after this is done). This is the fastest and most pain free way to install busybox on the streak that i know of for now (the other ways of doing this ARE NOT fun...)
3) On your SD card's root directory, create a folder called ubuntu and extract all files in the ubuntu mobile bundle there.
4) Replace the bootubuntu executeable file in the ubuntu directory with mine, found here http://www.mediafire.com/?fi011w4fbmymw3y
5) Unmount phone from computer. ADB and Android Terminal will not work if the phone is mounted.
5) Download a terminal from the Android Market - I used Jack Palevich's Android Terminal Emulator (android market search: terminal) but anything similar should work the same
CODE
Code:
su
cd /sdcard/ubuntu
sh ubuntu.sh
6) Ignore any errors thrown up by ubuntu.sh. From this point, all that is needed to boot ubuntu is just to enter this:
CODE
Code:
bootubuntu
To start ubuntu from now on, this is all you need to do.
You should now have ubuntu working on your laptop, and while it DOES connect to your phone's internet sources, it DOES NOT yet have a graphical interface.
Here is how to add one:
1) Update the system with the following commands in ubuntu:
CODE
Code:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
The first one updates the package lists, the second one downloads updates to the system itself.
2) Install TightVNC in ubuntu:
CODE
Code:
apt-get install tightvncserver
3) Configure TightVNC:
CODE
Code:
export USER=root
vncserver -geometry 800x480
For security purposes, it is recommended that you assign a password to your VNC server when asked.
4) Download Android VNC Viewer from the market
5) Configure Android VNC Viewer:
Change the port to 5901 and type in your password that you entered before.
Other Problems
There appears to be a bug with the X window server sometimes refusing to connect to VNC. DO NOT change any settings on Android VNC Viewer, instead open a terminal and run the folloring command:
CODE
Code:
rm -R /tmp/.X11-unix
What Does Not Work – Will Try To Fix
Keyboard from Android VNC Viewer
Shutdown – Does Nothing
Reboot
Log Out
Native Install
I hope you guys enjoy this, and I can't wait to get your feedback.

there was a thread about this but it wasnt work on me. now i am downloading and i will inform you again
what is the address for vnc ?
OMG! Could that be any slower on the download?
EDIT:
That sounded totally ungrateful - sorry!
Thank you very much for this
yeah works fine without problems.
it is better from g1 but not as well as a netbook. so only experimental use i think
I connected to the loopback 127.0.0.1 on 5901 and it worked - haven't seen how to connect to it remotely though
Edit:
Reading is fundamental - I can connect to it form another machine
now to fix the keyboard issue
in terminal emulator there is a note : localhost:1 vnc could work properly so i connect with only port and password.
is it possible to install jolicloud since its an ubuntu based system?
Newbie questions, sorry....
Before to try this port, just some maybe stupid questions for you:
- Still working the phone function?
- Is it easy to go back to standard or Steve Streaks Roms?
- Are there lack of drivers for bluetooth, gps, audio, wifi, etc?
Thanks.
No your missing the point here, this isn't an OS separate to android. Think of this as an app it runs on top of the android system. Also this is very experimental most features would be limited and no ubuntu can't be used as an smartphone os -No phone...

1) Ubuntu does not replace android, and the UI only runs in a VNC server, so you can switch back and forth between ubuntu and the phone app (or angry birds?)
2) I installed mine on top of DJ Steve's 1.8.1 rom... It's not native, so it only runs on top of android instead of replacing it
3) Haven't tried audio yet, but it should work (let me know how it goes)... internet connectivity works and provided you have an internet connection enabled in android you can use tools like APT or Firefox in ubuntu... only problem is keyboard is a bit wonky...
For those who had trouble figuring out how to set up the VNC, here is a picture of my VNC configuration on my phone. If you find out the phone's IP address you should even be able to VNC into it from your computer (if your on the same wifi network)

cause you are running 2 operating systems at the same time
But seriously, if ubuntu can run native (no android in the background) then the lag would be gone, and (if set up right) audio and keyboard would work.

Im wondering if I install a rdp server instead of vnc if I can get remote audio working.
Ill post with whatever results i get once I'm done waiting 2 hours for the ubuntu image to download.
As for lag. I had a n900 running @600mhz and was doing a chroot into ubuntu and it ran fine, but it used xpyher not vnc. Is there any embedded X servers for android yet? (I highly doubt it)
data requirement for updating GUI pkg of Ubuntu
Can any body tell me size of the data required to update to gui ......as i m not using wi -fi i hv to stick on gsm data usage which is limited in my plan
Very cool!
I had lots of trouble rooting my 2.2.2, but finally got it done by running Gingerbreak twice in a row on a cleanly re-started Streak.
Thanks for a fun gig!

[Prerequisite to Rooting] Android SDK Installer - v3.0 for Windows

**Microsoft Windows ONLY*
This installer is for new people looking to root their HTC Thunderbolt (not sure on other HTC devices but should work.) I compiled an SDK installer that installs all the necessary files to the directory of your choice (default C:\sdk) to your PC. This installer also includes HTC Sync for the Drivers as well as Java if you do not already have Java installed.
So if you're new to Android and want the tools to root, this might be the place to start before making that big step.
**If you have problems with it installing, try right clicking and running as administrator
Android SDK Installer with HTC Sync and Java v3.0 - 117 MB
*This is a pretty good size file but remember it also includes HTC Sync and Java within the installer.
*You cannot download Java and HTC Sync at the same time, so be patient.
*If you do not want to install HTC Sync but want the driver allow it to install them and then cancel out when asking to install HTC Sync.
*If you already have Java you can cancel out of the Java Installer.
**Download might take longer depending on your Internet Connection.
Please let me know what you think below.
Thanks!
Changelog:
v3.0 - Maintenance Update
v2.0 - Fixed Directory Issues
v1.0 - Initial Release
Also, here is a great tutorial brought to you by Captainkrtek.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?p=9959449
The only difference in the tutorials is the path.
The path for adb with this installer will be: C:\sdk\platform-tools
*Big thanks to CoolSilver for helping me test this out
Looks good! But where's the link?
Sorry, was still uploading it. Its updated now.
Tried it out, works fine. ADB setup and working.
Such a good idea. Trying to talk someone through installation of sdk is kind of maddening. Do we still have to add the path?

No, it auto installs to C:\sdk
C:\sdk\platform-tools\
This will help a lot of those I see struggling with root not knowing anything about sdk/adb. Great post. Perhaps linking a guide to adb will help people as well?
Looks good. Newbs all around are rejoicing.

I can guarantee and you have my word that the applicaton installer is clean. Norton AV also has many false positives.

Hmm, strange. What version of Windows are you running?
Also, check to see whether you already have java installed. If you do then java is not necessary to complete the installation successfully.
Great job man great contribution! Cheers to you

Glad you were able to get it to work!
Thanks for this!!! My plan is to slowly get to root. I want to try to push a few apps first.
This works really well. Made setting up adb and rooting the thunderbolt so easy.
Thanks I used this to help root my phone.
Only issue I notice is that when I click sdk manager.exe the console comes up shortly and dissappears after about 2 seconds. How do I fix this? Is it because your program only installs the non-jdk version of Java possibly?
Any tips would be appeciated

[Q] explore android from windows

looking for a simple way to swap and mod a few system files on my HD2 Haret/SD android.
i am not developing anything, only changing.
i am ok with the terminal on the device (using BTEP) but its tedious.
what i need is to mount the phone on wndows 7 (or a MAC if thats easier) so i can copy and paste from the comfort of my own keyboard
its a Haret/SD build, not nand.
thanks
That's not a question of SD or NAND. All you need to know is this: http://androidcommander.com/
Edit: If you are on 64bit-system...install 32bit java...otherwise it will not work!
thanks icke, yes 64bit windows 7, was hoping for a standalone program but specs say i still have to get ADB USB Driver from SDK.
i think thats where the problems were with other methods i tried.
looks just what i was looking for though.
not sure if it will work,
DroidExplorer: http://de.codeplex.com/
Works with NAND Roms, not sure if it works with SD, or does what you want.
Yes, I'd like to do the same as the OP. That Androidcommander looks pretty interesting. Think I'll try it... But I see, I need to d/l and install the Android SDK... as a requirement for Androidcommander. Shouldn't be too difficult... But I see I need to d/l and install the Java Development Kit as a requirement for the Android SDK... wish I were a developer, so I'd have some use for these large programs!!!
Droid Explorer seems to have the same requirements. Is all this even worth it for a non-developer/programmer. Isn't there a better way to run a file explorer on an Android device from a desktop PC?
Haha Lol... with Windows or WM... I feel like a pro! with Android, I'm just a noob... Lol, Lol
(edit)... seems the more I read, the less (I realize) I know... for now. But all this above... I'll figure it out Not a problem!
@ icke... thanks for the reco on androidcommander. And for anyone else reading, the install wasn't too difficult, inclusive of the SDK and the JDK. There were unexpected repercussions (not sure but certainly from the SDK or JDK install). Upon reboot... the WinXP Security Center didn't recognize my firewall or AV pgms... saying the system was unprotected, although both av & firewall were up & running.
The command prompt (cmd.exe), also wouldn't recognize anything typed. But... Google is my friend. One of these DK pgms (probably Java, but I dunno), blew-up the systems environment variable (Path), and so I had to recreate. Done and all is well. AC looks looks to be exactly what I wanted... and then some. Thanks again!

Sorry...doesn't know how it is working on WinXP (Only tried Win7 64x). All I can say: everything I do between my Leo and Pc, I use Android Commander. For me, there's no better way to copy, merge, paste...or anything else working 1:1 with my device.
BTW: There is an pluggin for TotalCommander PC...but doesn't worked for me yet...maybe on 32X systems.

Just to reiterate... It's working very well in WinXP. I'm genuinely pleased with how it all panned out and I was just thanking you again for the recommendation.
The Java jdk, or was it the android sdk (still not sure which) overwrote and changed my systems environment variable (AKA system path) and so the command prompt and some security pgms appeared to not be working... Once I restored the path - everything worked again. AC is must have for what it does!
