Turn off data/wireless radio? - Hero, G2 Touch General

I recently upgraded to an Epic 4G but I'd still like to use my Hero as a GPS and Wifi capable unit for geocaching and tracking my mountain bike rides. I figure if the cell radio is turned off, then that would just save that much more battery and processing. So how do I turn that off? I just want to be able to use GPS and Wifi only.

by using airplane mode you can turn of radio n data
but not sure whether it will turn off gps so in that case you wont be able to use as a gps device
try and see

I've used that before when I was riding, and still using my tracks, so I know airplane mode will leave GPS on, wasn't sure about wifi though.

[Q] How do you turn off 3G without turning off GPS?

Does anyone know how to turn off the 3G radio without turning off the GPS?
I know the airplane mode trick will turn off 3G but that also turns off GPS, which some Google apps need.
I hope Google gives us dedicated radio toggles in 3.1.

That is the correct way to do it.
Airplane mode really should be used when you want ALL of the wireless turned off, including wifi. It's strange that it lets you turn it back on while in airplane mode. I guess it makes sense for those planes that now have wifi.

Also how i use my phone overseas without having to worry about a big ass bill.
Are you sure GPS is off in Airplane Mode? I run in A-M too when I'm on WiFi, and I've definately seen the "GPS on" indicator come up when doing something that needs my location.
But to be sure, I downloaded "GPS Test" from the market, turned on Airplane Mode after getting it, and GPS test was able to see some 6 satellites (inside- we have some really nice hardware!).
I don't think GPS is off when in A-M.

Well, it actually does kill-switch everything when enabled- which is what it's supposed to do, but it's a good thing that it allows selective re-enabling of BT and WiFi.
Besides, GPS is a reciever (unlike BT/WiFi which also Xmit), but while I'm aware of the heterodyne issue, that leakage is FAR smaller, and the only way to fix that is to turn off the device altogether.

[Q Solved] Nonactivated 3G

If I haven't activated 3G, does that mean the radio is disabled, or could it be still using battery power?
Put it in airplane mode then enable WiFi, then the only radio that's on is your WiFi radio. That's what I do on my deactivated Droid, otherwise its looking for 3g...

I forgot all about doing that on my Xoom. I did that just now, since my 3g has not been activated.
Awesome! Thanks for reminding me about that.
Yeah, originally I didn't do anything about it....but then I was thinking that maybe it was using some battery so I enabled airplane mode. Battery has been much better. Hopefully there will be a ROM or some other way to disable it in the code, so that I don't have to leave airplane on.
You can also disable mobile service in the settings. It's preferable since doesn't airplane mode also disable gps?

If you go into Settings in Wireless and Networks, if Airplane mode is turned off you can choose Mobile Networks and turn off data selected.
That should stop the antenna from activating without using Airplane mode.

I tried that originally and the battery monitor still showed the 3G radio being on. Also even doing that it still prompts on every reboot to be activated while in airplane mode it doesn't

My understanding though is that this will ONLY disable data. It won't disable the physical radio that connects to the cell network. And as long as that radio is enabled (even if data is disabled) it will contribute to the draining of your battery. By putting the device in airplane mode, it will actually disable the RADIO, not just the data coming in through the radio.
I just switched to Airplane mode. Let's see if this will help battery life (not that I had to complain anyway)

Originally after about 30 hours I would have around 20% battery left. After enabling airplane mode I have 86% battery left after 1 day and 7 hours. I think it makes a big difference.
So is this right? The only way to disable the radio is to actually enable airplane mode and then turn wifi back on? Will the GPS still work?
I found with mine just on standby I used 17% battery in Cell Standby. I went into Mobile network settings and unchecked Data Enabled and it dropped considerably, down to about 3% (still while I hadn't been using the Xoom).
I'm going to try airplane mode tonight.
Is there any hope to activate 3G? I am living in europe (Denmark) and here is no verzion.

[Q] Going on vacation, what to turn off?

Hey all, Just looking for some advice for my upcoming vacation.
I'm planning on taking my phone with me on vacation in a couple of weeks. Primarily I'll be using as a camera, but I'd also like to keep on top of my emails via hotel WiFi only.
I do not however want to make/receive calls or use any kind of roaming data etc.
Basically my question is what do I need to disable so I just have WiFi available and nothing else? How do I disable the radio without putting it into airplane mode (which obviously disables WiFi)
HTC obviously thought of airplanes with WiFi. Turn on airplane mode, wifi turns off, but you can turn it back on without enabling the radios and leaving airplane mode enabled.

Great, so simple, many thanks for the quick response!
Also, If you're just using Wifi, You should remove your Sim Card, just in case airplane mode turns off somehow, you don't get data charges from syncing functions.
Enjoy your vacation.

How to turn off cell radio to use as ipod replacement

I'm using this as an ipod replacement and I finally figured out how to turn off the cell radio, I think.
open dial pad
dial *#*#4636#*#* (If Testing menu doesn’t come up then click "Call" and it will come up)
go to Phone information
Scroll down
turn off radio
I assumed wrongly before that the cell radio was automatically turned off since I didn't have a sim card AND since the option to turn off 3G data was disabled in the Wireless settings section. But out of curiosity, I clicked on battery info and it said that my cell radio was on this whole time! See attachment.
Turning on Airplane does turn off the cell, but it also turned off the Wifi and GPS. You can turn Wifi back on after Airplane mode, but it doesn't work properly, try using XMBC remote with Airplane mode and Wifi on, it doesn't work.
So, I guess I'll see tomorrow if this really works but so far it looks promising!
sweet thanks for the info
Get tasker and make a toggle switch of the code

I tried the keypad code you listed and nothing happens. I really need a way to turn off the phone and keep bluetooth on while at work in order to listen to my music with bluetooth headphones. I was able to use the code successfully before the Froyo update.
On mine, I simply switch on airplane mode then switch on wifi. Voila! Phone off, wifi on.
Nevermind, did not see reply that some apps don't work with this workaround...

Couldn't you just pull the SIM card???
Edit - Nevermind. I suppose the radio is still on for emergency calls...

Disable cell signal

Anyone know if I can disable the cell signal automatically on the unrooted nexus 6P?
I know I can pop it in airplane mode and then turn back on bluetooth & wifi but I want to automate this process so that when I'm at work it will toggle the cell radio off.
Any ideas?
Ok, so I setup tasker to turn on Wifi and Bluetooth when I put the phone in airplane mode. It's not ideal but it's a start.
If anyone's got a better idea, please let me know
I am assuming I can't turn off just the cell without root.
Can't you use NFC tags for tasks like this?
I can't find anything saying it would work airplane mode or turning the cell off though.
