[Q] Switch to a different Android build question? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

When switching to a different build do I just swap out the android folders on my SD card? Is their way to keep all my apps and stuff?

just delete your current Android folder and replace with your new one and if you want to backup your apps and settings you could use MyBackupPro or Titanium backup form Marketplace although Titanium backup is said to have some issues. But seriously though, you need to do some more searching before you make a thread

Look in your build's thread. Some builds will have instructions for updating a new version. Usually if you are updating to a new version of one build you can just swap the contents of the android folder minus the data.img. I would suggest titanium backup if you are moving to a completely new build.

Install apk files on each build

Every time that I flash a new NAND build (almost every day), I find myself at list one hour seating and installing all the apk files on my sd card.
Is there a way to install all the files on the first boot ? to save them on one folder and on the first boot android will install all of them ?
I know that in SD card builds it's possible.
Please advice.
No, that's not possible. It was a feature of SD builds only.
Why not use Titanium Backup to backup all your apps and data, and the restore them all with just 1 click (if paid - lots of clicks if not!)
Or keep your apps on a rom with ext partition support.
Backup in nandroid, wipe, install new rom, reboot cwm, restore backup where you can choose, select SD ext part.
Reboot, enjoy not having to install all your apk files

[Q] Advice on how to manage nandroids and app backups

So I am not even a week into rooting my Evo and flashing roms and I am not sure what the best way to organize my backups are.
What do you guys do to manage all the nandroids and app backups in Titanium?
Here is my situation, I have my nandroids from right after rooting and a few from doing the two updates that CM7 had. I first did a nandroid or two using CWM, I then flashed recovery to Amon_Ra and did nandroids in their also. I also had all my apps backed up using TB post-root (sense) and now that I am on CM7 I have many different apps that I have added. I have read some people say not to backup apps from 2.2 on sense to CM7, though the few that I have done work fine.
Should I delete all the backups in TB from my stock 2.2 w sense? Can I rename my RA nandroid backup files so that I can label them better to know what they are? Or should I just move them to my computer and put them in a folder named what they are and leave the file name alone? Can I move the backup folder from TB onto my computer that has my sense backups to save for a rainy day?
I can see this getting very messy and confusing if I do not get a handle on all these backup files. Just wondering if someone has a good system for keeping track of these and when to get rid of nandroids and app backups.
Thanks!!!!
i just created folders named clock and amon ra on my computer, and inside those folders i created folders with the names of the roms i flashed with each recovery and then i moved the nandroid files from my sd card into the computer folders that corresponded, and i only left my last working backup on my phone
- clear your TB and start fresh. i would advise against trying to criss cross your Sense/AOSP backups. it may work but i'd consider it a fluke not the rule.
- you cannot restore a RA nandroid with CWM nandroid and viseversa. so whichever one you think you'll stick with...you can get rid of the others.
- yes, you can rename the nandriod folder. no spaces. very handy once you get a few nandroids going.
- i use SyncToy from Microsoft to copy all the sdcard data onto my pc. this way i can protect my nandroids, pics, vids, mp3, misc crap.
i normally leave one or two nandriods on my device (i have had a bad nandroid in the past) and zip of the current rom.
as for the deletion policy..that depends on your level of paranoia and amount of available diskspace and time.

Thanks, I like the idea of clearing out TB (I just did it) I was just worried removing the files would somehow mess up the TB app.
Sticking with Amon RA and I knew about not being able to use nandroids from different recoveries.
I will checkout synctoy, sounds cool, I already have three folders of my entire SD card that I made during my rooting process and changing recovery process. I hate it, I don't know what I need to keep from them.
Thanks for the input

[Q] After ROM Flash, How Do You Clean SDCard?

Flashed MikG last night from a stock EVO. All went well. Used Titanium to restore some of my programs but others that were on the SD card I don't want any longer and I'm sure there's data on that SD card that is now not used and just taking up space. My question: Is there a way to safely clean unwanted stuff off an SDcard?
Maybe a better option would be to install a new, blank SDcard, let the ROM configure it and then use Titanium backup to reinstall only the programs that I want?
go to the folder named titanium and erase the files for the apps you dont want anymore, also look on the root of the sd card for folders created by this apps, they are usually named like the apps

So unlike an OS you can just delete the apps folder on the SDcard?
I just got a new SDCard. If I installed that blank card I take it the ROM would configure it ok or do I need to copy anything over from the old SDcard first? I'd like to start off with a clean SDcard and then reinstall my apps.
i do it all the time never had any problems, just make sure you don't do that to any off the sprint bloat folders, you leave those alone and sprint apps you just freeze not uninstall you never know when you might need them, plus if you freeze them and your phone starts acting weird you can always defrost them, but if you uninstall them and it acts up you got trouble.

[Q] transferring apps between Builds?

I am going to switch to a new ROM (one of the MccM builds once I know which one to use!) after CoreDroid crashed on me (SD builds)
There are some apps I like cooked into CoreDroid for which I see the apks are in the Android Apps folder.
Can i just copy these apks into the same folder on the new ROM and will they be installed/work from 1st boot or is it not that straight forward?
yes u can copy them into the zip befor flashing ...but dobt copy mutch or the file will be big for the partition ...i tried one and it wouldnt boot but when i deleted some of the apps i copied it booted ...or just usr titanium backup to save all ur apps

The easiest way is to use titanium backup (free on the android market but you probably have it already).
yes but sadly Titanium is one of the apps permanently crashed on current build
You can copy the apks like you said and install them on your new rom. Just do it after flashing and do not copy them to the system folder.... but your data will be lost this way.
Sent from my HTC HD2
sorry i got confused by what you just said. if i copy the apk to the android apps folder, when i do a first boot will they not be installed to this build?
if not, how do i do it then please?
you copy the apk to your sd card and install them normally on your new build by selecting the apks in a file explorer.

[Q] Switching from SD to NAND (Keeping everything else?)

Hello all.
I would like some information on switching from an SD version of Android (on AmeriCan Android on SD atm) to a NAND version (likely AmeriCan Android NAND as well) and still keep my user account and information apks, everything the same? I'm coming from WinMo as my primary phone OS, then tested out WP7 for a while, so I have HSPL and MAGLDR installed. I was switching out SD cards between roms so I had a card dedicated to WP7 and one Fat32 for WinMo/SD Android. I later just set MAGLDR to boot straight to Android folder on the SD.
Can someone give me some pointers on how I can successfully accomplish this? I don't mind if it takes a bit of time/complication. I'm not very familiar with Android yet, so I'm not up on what would be the best Backup/restore methods or anything of the like atm. Also should I keep MAGLDR or switch to some booter more Android friendly?
Any help is appreciated,
D ;-)
You'd be fine keeping MAGLDR.
Titanium Backup is great for backing up and restoting your apps and app data.
Your contacts and calendar appointments are synced to your Google account, and really the only other thing you'll have to set up is your email accounts and your launcher preferences.
When switching to a NAND ROM, one thing to consider is partitioning your SD card with a 1gb ext3/4 partition for the use of A2SD or Data2SD, which will give you much more room for many more apps in Android.
Running out of internal memory isn't usually a big deal on SD builds because alot of them come with a 1gb data.img, but that's not the case with NAND. But with a 1gb partition and a A2SD enabled ROM, you'll never run out of space, your phone will run smooth even with hundreds of apps.
Just make sure to install the correct size CWM partition setup before flashing your new ROM.
WooHooo!!!! 800th post!!! Hooray for me!!
Thanks huggs. That was very helpful information. And from the sounds of it pretty simple stuff. Btw congratz on the posting accomplishment! ;-)
I have a few questions sparked from that info. Firstly what's a CWM partition? Second, when I backup with titanium will it save my system preferences as well? If not what will? I go through and make a lot of micro adjustments to stuff, and being that I'm basically going back to the same rom, can I keep my system setup while switching? Edit: Also meant to ask about SMS/MMS? Those are very important to me, will they be backed up as well?

CWM partition is the size of partitions that your NAND space will be divided into when you flash your ClockWork Mod Recovery.
The recovery you download will come with a flash.config file, you can open it with a text editor and change the partition sizes to the correct sizes listed in the thread of the ROM you wish to install, or you can search for the HD2 NAND toolkit, which is a graphical program that makes it easy to set your partition sizes and flash CWM.
As far as micro system settings, I don't know of any way to back those up when going from SD to NAND build, but on the upside, when you backup a NAND build in CWM, EVERYTHING down to the finest detail is backed up, and can be restored anytime.
For your SMS and MMS messages, there are programs in the Android market that can backup and restore your messages, but I have never used any of them, so I can't say which is the best. I guess the one that's free would be the best for me, but thats just because I'm a cheapskate
Titanium Backup will only restore your apps, and the data related to your apps. It takes a bit of getting to know how it works too, it's not super complicated, but it's not super simple either. Google will be very helpful on that one.
For your info I just swapped from Tytung's SD build to his NAND, his advice was to run the batch operation in titanium, for all system data and apps then restore using the similar batch operation in the new build.
It all worked fine, just remember to add the titanium .apk to your ROM zip before you flash it, so you have the means to restore your system before google account is connected.
This was swapping between the exact same ROM version.
Thank you very much for all the help, I greatly appreciate it. After a couple days playing with it trial and error, I got it down for moving from the SD to the NAND. I'll admit too that I almost had a heart attack for a while when I didn't know titanium would actually backup my contacts and settings, and deleted the copy I made with my backup accidentally.
boomboomer, i did it almost exactly that way, except for the titanium.apk, Next time I'll know that for heads up.
Again thanks for the help! Now I just have to figure out how to make CWMr work with roms that install from DFT.exe
