Once you have "rooted" your phone (there are many ways, you need to search about), you basically have access to things you didn't before like modifying system functions at a lower level. It basically means you can give your phone even more capabilities using apps that require root, and it enables you to install custom roms and such.
I wondered about this too. Had mine only a few days also, so are there any links to Rooting this phone and things to look out for??

Oh sorry wrong by me...

The root is the harddrive/sd cards very bottom. (like in a computer the root is usually C:\) So if someone says that you should put the files in the "root" you put it on the cards bottom not in any folders or anything.

Not in this context is it now...
is it possible to root your device on a mac?
most of the examples i've seen are done on pcs?
Think of it as the different between admin user and guest user.

It's not necessary to involve a PC. Just do this:
1 Download the update.zip file from http://www.multiupload.com/JHIFK9K80P using your phone itself. However, if you're using the native browser, make sure you have first installed Astro File Manager. Otherwise, the browser does not support downloading of such file type.
2. Then start the stock program called My Files. Navigate to the /sdcard/download folder to look for update.zip
3. Move it to /sdcard. This is done by clicking menu button -> more->move, select the update.zip, press move, move here.
4. Check that the update.zip file is at the root, then continue.
5. Power down the phone. This done by holding the power button then select power off option.
6. Press volume UP button+ power button+ home button at the same time until you see the galaxy S samsung logo screen before letting go of all three buttons. You will see four options presented.
7. Use the volume button to move between options. You would want to select the option called "apply adcard:update.zip by pressing the home key.
Then wait for it to reboot. It's done
8. You know you're rooted when you see an application icon called Suoeruser Permission in your application drawer.
To confirm the step here cross check with this post:

Hope this helps. I understand the apprehension,p. I'm also an Android noob. I own an Android device for around 7days now.
please be aware that rooting your phone voids your warranty, so I would not do it unless you actually have a real desire to use a root app/change roms
for the average person root is not really necessary, playing around with root apps without knowing what you are doing can cause much more damage than good.

True. I did it because I need screen capture. Wanted to flash new firmware to remove lags and get GPS working, but it seems like no firmware can really do that yet. So I'll wait for Froyo.

Ah, I now remember that you need to install another program for Android browser to support download of such file. As I've hard reset my phone twice, its no longer on my phone and I can't remember the name of the program that enables this. Anyone know?
Edit: it's called Astro file manager . Install that first. I discovered it when evaluating browser in post 4 and five in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=724998

Not just turning off the screen. You must power it off. These two mean different things. To power off, press and hold the power button until you see the option to power off as one of options. Read step 5 again.

GOT IT! Its different for captivate, i needed to press up n down volume buttons + power button xD so now i was able to go to the android system recovery... but... when i tryed to select "reinstall packages" says Can't open /sdcard/update.zip (no such file or directory) Instalation aborted.
So i maked sure it was there, i even enabled the option to see extensions of the files so it gets to be "update.ZIP". But there was nothing different.

The update.zip MUST be on the phone's INTERNAL memory.
When you connect your phone to your pc via USB and mount it, you have to put the update.zip in the root directory of the phone's internal sd card, not the physical sd card.
Because of Android's way of doing things, it refers to its own internal memory as an sd card too.
Like Axis of reality is saying.
Interesting to see multiple ways of getting into recovery mode. Why don't they may it the same?
Thnaks everyone!
Finally i was able to do it. So the update.zip had to go in the sdcard like @AXIS of Reality said. But not only that, seems i had to modify the updater-script, adding the model of my phone. I ended up having this "Superuser Permission" app but when i try to open it the screen stays black.
Well anyways, thnx @eaglesteve for the patience and @AXIS of Reality for ur help xD
I had to call VZW to find out how to format my Droid X, so I figured I would share the info for whoever needs it down the road.
To Format:
1)Turn off the phone
2)Hold the Power Button and the Home Button. The Moto logo will pop up followed by a triangle with the Android symbol next to it.
3)Press the Search button to display the menu.
4)4 options will pop up, use the Volume Rocker to move the selection up or down.
5)Select “Wipe Data to Factory Default.” Select the option by using the Camera hard key.
6)Confirm choice by using the camera key.
7)It will take you back to the original menu, select "Reboot Device"
You will have to re-program your phone with OTA updates.
1. Thats the recovery window. Not needed for a factory reset.
2. To do a proper factory reset follow these: 1.Go to Settings 2.Scroll to Privacy 3.Click Factory Data Reset 4. Confirm action by clicking Reset Phone.
If i am rooted and have deleted apps like blockbuster ect. Will this interfer with making like it just like it came outta the box???
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Factory reset should make your x just as if you got it brand new bloatware and all. Also remeber this will cause you to loose root. Hope this helps. Thanks!
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Factory Data Reset is a tool used to remove everything that was imported, added or installed on the device.
Factory reset will not bring back any factory apps you've removed or renamed. Basically it clears /data and /cache, it does nothing to /system/apps where the factory apps are installed.
Also if you've removed or renamed Back-Up Assistant and do a reset, you'll end up with a semi-bricked phone.
This is what the verizon tech told me to do, and it put my phone back to the exact same state that it was in when I got it out of the box from vzw.
I figured someone would need this information eventually.

NO. DO NOT WIPE IF YOU REMOVED ANY BLOAT APPS.
If you do this you can kiss your phone goodbye.
Read this thread to tell you how to put back the apps the RIGHT way before you wipe, otherwise, you will be without a phone.http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/droid-x-hacks/1462-how-put-back-backup-assistant-if-you-removed-but-arent-bootlooping.html

Can this work with rooted phone?
Ok kids.
This will remove root if say...all you've done is used z4 to root...and installed some root apps.
DO NOT attempt this if you've removed bloatware or installed a Rom or theme.
Safest bet is to sbf...re-root...flash maderstock...and re-sbf.
That's what I've always done. And I've had best buy fix my phone twice now.
They've never mentioned a thing.
The reason I flash maderstock is some boot animations are kept with just an sbf...
its just a precaution I take.

This is true if your phone was completely stock to begin with (other than downloading apps). For those that have modified their phone in any other way, this will not bring your phone to an "out of the box" state. You must sbf for that and then factory reset.

can one of the moderators remove and/or re-title this thread?

yeah i have to agree; the title is really what I expect most people would believe to have an entirely different meaning, ie an sbf or complete removal of all ROMs, bootloaders and most importantly, the super user icon in the app drawer.
Can someone explain what SBF is I have to get a replacement x due to a broken camera button and. Im rooted
Factory Data reset for Droid X running gingerbread.
Reset instructions for DROID X on 2.3 Gingerbread Android:
Turn off phone
Press and hold Power key + Home hard key to power on the phone and bring up a triangle with an exclamation point inside next to a green Android graphic.
Press both Volume buttons down together to show the Android recovery menu.
Use volume buttons to scroll up or down in this menu. Highlight "wipe data/factory reset"
Tap Power button hard key to confirm the selection.
Handset will ask you to "Confirm wipe of all user data"
Select "Yes -- delete all user data"
Tap Power button hard key to confirm the selection and start wipeout of phone, handset will begin to format handset showing progress with multiple lines of ellipses (....)
Handset may take from 5-20 minutes to format.
When format is complete, Tap Power button when prompted to reboot (Reboot system now will be highlighted)
You will see either an open box and the green android graphic when handset is rebooting (or the red DROID eye graphic).
Handset will be cleared of previous personal data, and you will need to start over with initial set-up process.
nice, you couldn't find an older thread, to bring back from the dead?

Assuming your ADB and all that is set up...and you already downloaded the Release 1 of Froyo ROM.
Install clockworkMod recovery : Do this by downloading this:
http://loadbalancing.modaco.com/download.php?url=paul/streak/2.5.0.1-streak-clockworkrecovery.zip
and follow this instruction.
Download the recovery image zip file above and extract to a directory
Put your device in bootloader mode (Unplug the device from your PC, remove the device battery, then replace it and turn device on with the camera button pressed. Select the 'fastboot' text on the top right, wait around 10 seconds then plug the device into your PC. The screen display should change to 'FASTBOOT MODE'. If it doesn't, repeat and retry
WINDOWS - double click 'install-recovery-windows.bat'
(I've had instances where I had to literally run this batch file twice to ensure it was picked up by the device.
THEN, place the update-new.zip onto your sd card
Now boot streak into recovery by shutting down and holding vol up and down as you press power, select update from .pkg option and wait for Clockwork to load. Ignore errors regarding Misc...blah, blah...
-select flash zip from sd
-choose select zip from sd and find the update-new.zip and flash it
-Afterwards, press the power button to go back until you see the optiong to reboot. Enjoy your FROYO.
when i press the shutter button to install it gives me two errors: no signature annd verification failed or something like that i never see anything thats says install from zip

If youre at that part it should go like this...
1) Keep both volume buttons down and then power on. Sometimes its better to power on, once you see your back, home, and menu button light up, immediately press the 2 volume buttons and keep it pressed. If successful you should be faced with the Stock Recovery Screen. This will give you 4 options, and option 2 is install Update.pkg. Ensuring there is not file on root of SD Card that is labeled Update.pkg, select Option 2.
2) If you do this it will go black and a message saying.."Android....." and then you'll be faced with Koush's custom recovery. You'll know you're in custom recovery because you have to hold the Streak upside down. (3 buttons on top and earpiece at the bottom). If you see this then you're successful and should be straightforward from there. Follow the rest of the instructions provided in my previous post.
-------
-select flash zip from sd
-choose select zip from sd and find the update-new.zip and flash it
-Afterwards, press the power button to go back until you see the optiong to reboot.
this is frustrating. ... when I did it_it went to the stock recovery and when I press shutter button it doesn't go to the custom recovery and I know I flashed it

[GUIDE] A detailed step-by-step "Dummies Guide" to installing CM7 on your ATRIX MB860
After reading several threads of where to go and how to do it, and being able to successfully install CM7 after going through all those threads, I took it upon myself that if I was ever successful in getting it on my device (Motorola Atrix MB860, locked to T-Mobile UK), I'd share my experience and hopefully create a how-to in the process. I am hoping this guide will be useful to many others.
Please be advised that this is the completed version of this simple guide, the actual process involved me having to back track and read several threads, then re-read some more other threads just to make sure I did the proper thing.
A big thank you to all those who took the time to make the guides I based this "all in one" guide for T-Mobile Atrix users. Some of them had an instruction or two missing (like when do you plug in the phone to the computer?) that would have been obvious to many but to some would have had trouble figuring out.
The phone in question: Motorola Atrix MB860. My phone was running Android 2.2.2. I updated the phone using a Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit machine.
Since I got it as a free phone on a new contract, I'd like to assume that the phone itself was network locked. I haven't tried any other SIM with it so far. Please be advised, YOU DO NOT NEED TO UNLOCK YOUR PHONE TO GET CM7. Unlocking the BOOTLOADER, is not the same as unlocking the phone. This maybe obvious to some people, but again, not to everyone (saw a guy respond in one forum who had to pay to get his phone network-unlocked, in hoping that would make it easier to install CM7 for him).
Also, this guide is not meant to be the official way of loading it up, I just hope that it makes it easier for someone else to load up the excellent CM7 on to a Motorola Atrix. Add it to the list of many threads you'll need to read! But I hope this thread is all you need to read.
So here goes, the step by step guide (I took) in getting the latest CM7 on it. Before I start, a few necessary words:
WARNING #1 - Ensure that whenever you plugin your phone, or install something, or run a command, please let the event finish before going on to the next step. In my experience, there were several times that I had to plug in the phone, and wait for the driver installation to continue, and on one instance I got a bit impatient unplugged the phone before realizing that it was still installing. It set me back another 10 minutes just because of that.
WARNING #2 - Please make sure that you back up any data that you have just to be sure. After the end of the entire process, your phone will be back to factory settings and you will need to re-setup any customisations, and put back any media files you use, AND install any apps you use.
WARNING #3 - Just to be safe, and to make sure that your battery stats isn't messed up, make sure that you fully charge your phone first before continuing with this guide.
DISCLAIMER - As with anything regarding XDA and tinkering with your phone, you may void your warranty doing this. I cannot be 100% sure that your phone will not be bricked by this (I've been using the guides by XDA'ers over the years and have yet to brick a phone. Well I did brick my Samsung Galaxy S i9000 once, but I was able to recover it!). Proceed at your own discretion.
THE GUIDE
1. Download all the necessary files. I have taken the liberty of gathering all the files you will need in one archive. Click on any of the following download links to grab it.
* Deposit Files Main
* MediaFire Mirror
* Filesonic Mirror
* Megaupload Mirror
2. UnRAR the archive to "C:". A warning may show up based on your security settings, just say "Yes" to this.
3. Install the necessary drivers and programs. Start with "MotorolaEndUserDrivers_5.1.0x64.msi". Then install "RSDLite5.3.1.msi".
4. Unlocking the Bootloader.
a. Turn off your phone.
b. Remove your SIM, and MicroSD card if you have one.
c. Put the battery back in, then press and hold "Power Button + Volume Up" until it acknowledges RSD.
d. The phone will say “Starting RSD protocol support”.
e. On your computer, open "RSD Lite".
f. Press the “...” button.
g. Locate the "intl-fix-try1.sbf" file. This should be located in "C:\MotorolaMB860toCM7\". Select that. For USA AT&T users please refer to this link to download the correct SBF file.
h. Connect your phone to the computer. Ensure that all the drivers are installed before proceeding.
i. RSD Lite should recognize your phone and say something similar to “Model: SE Flash Olympus” and the status should read as “Connected…”
j. Press the “Start” button. This may take a few moments. My phone rebooted and completed starting up before the timer in RSD Lite reached 100%! But I did not disconnect the phone just to be sure.
k. Press "Windows Key + R". Type "cmd" then press "Enter".
l. In the command prompt window, enter in "C:" first to make sure you're in the right drive, then execute "cd C:\MotorolaMB860toCM7\fastboot\" to go to the right folder. This will change your working folder to that of where the files are (well, a subfolder of the main folder, you should be at the fastboot working folder, I won't say folder again... D'OH!).
m. Turn off your phone. After making sure it's turned off, press "Power Button + Volume Down" until you see "Fastboot" on the phone's screen.
n. Press "Volume Up" and you should see “Starting Fastboot protocol support”.
o. Connect your phone back to the computer via USB. Again, ensure that any driver installation prompts are finished before proceeding.
p. Back at the command prompt, type "fastboot oem unlock".
q. A warning will appear, along with a "Unique Device ID".
r. Type "fastboot oem unlock *****". Where ***** will be your "Unique Device ID".
s. Type "fastboot reboot".
t. Your phone will now reboot. Now, your phone has an unlocked bootloader!
5. Flashing CWM Recovery using FASTBOOT.
a. Turn off your phone. Then boot into "fastboot". This is done by pressing "Power Button + Volume Down" when turning on your phone.
b. When you see "Fastboot" on the phone's screen, press "Volume Up" to select it.
c. Connect your phone to your computer. Again ensure any prompts are finished before proceeding.
d. Your command prompt should still be open, and your working directory should still be "C:\MotorolaMB860toCM7\fastboot\". Now type "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img".
e. After the process, type in "fastboot reboot".
f. Your phone will now reboot, and you have successfully installed CWM Recovery.
6. Installing Cyanogen Mod 7!
a. Turn the phone off then put back your SIM, and your MicroSD card.
b. Turn on your phone, and after the phone completely boots up, connect it to your computer. You should use Mass Storage as the connection option in the phone.
c. Copy the files "Ba2tF.zip" and "gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip" into the phone's internal memory.
d. Disconnect the phone properly from the computer, then turn off the phone.
e. On the phone, press "Power Button + Volume Down" until you see "Fastboot".
f. Press "Volume Down" several times until you see "Android Recovery". Then press "Volume Up". Your phone should say "Entering Android Recovery Mode".
g. Using the volume keys for movement (Up & Down) and the power button for selection, choose "install zip from sdcard".
h. Then select "choose zip from internal sdcard".
i. You might see a lot of folders and files here. You will need to select "Ba2tF.zip".
j. After which, it will ask you to confirm. Select "Yes - Install Ba2tF.zip".
k. After it completes the installation, you will need to run the "wipe data/factory reset" command in CWM Recovery. Follow the prompts to complete this.
l. After that, you will need to run the "wipe cache partition" command in CWM Recovery. Again, follow the prompts to complete this.
m. When it completes, choose "reboot system now".
n. Be enchanted by the excellent Cyanogen Mod 7 loading screen!
7. Due to an arrangement (more like a request) from Google, the Cyanogen Mod 7 release does not contain any Google Apps. To install the necessary Google Apps:
a. Turn off the phone.
b. On the phone, press "Power Button + Volume Down" until you see "Fastboot".
c. Press "Volume Down" several times until you see "Android Recovery". Then press "Volume Up". Your phone should say "Entering Android Recovery Mode".
d. Using the volume keys for movement (Up & Down) and the power button for selection, choose "install zip from sdcard".
e. Then select "choose zip from internal sdcard".
f. You might see a lot of folders and files here. You will need to select "gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip".
g. After which, it will ask you to confirm. Select "Yes - Install gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip".
h. When it completes, choose "reboot system now".
8. That is it! That's the whole process I believe. Can easily be done in 30 minutes, but I would recommend alotting an hour to this project just to be safe.
I have found that once going on to Cyanogen Mod 7, it would be very hard, nay, would be insane for me to go back to the Stock ROM (or any other ROM for that matter!). I personally think that all this hard work is worth it. Bottom line, I appreciate what my phone is and has to offer thanks to the Cyanogen Mod team (specifically the Atrix-Dev-Team!).
Most importantly, donations to the Atrix-Dev-Team (http://code.google.com/p/atrix-dev-team/) will be most appreciated (I'm not a part of them but I support what they do, hey). They do a fantastic job and giving them some beer money is the least we can do to show our appreciation.
Last and not the least, this guide is a combination of all the other guides that I have had to read and peruse in order for me to get my phone on to CM7. All I did was get the necessary important information that was useful to me, but the credit of the actual content and the guides go to the following:

* In case you were wondering what "preinstall.img" is, well according to this thread, it should help with ROOTing your phone. I haven't done so, haven't used it, but I've attached it for your convenience should you feel extra adventurous.
I wish you success in the installation of CM7 on to your Motorola Atrix!
Good job figuring it out and writing an in detail guide, I am sure many people will find it useful ....
...
BUT
.... the procedures of installing CM7 on network locked and network unlocked phones are exactly the same.
So, existing guides would do the job just fine, disregarding if the phone is sim locked or not.
Thanks for pointing that out, I will update the thread to indicate this.
The.Opethian said:
NOTE: This guide can also work on unlocked phones.
After reading several threads of where to go and how to do it, and being able to successfully install CM7 after going through all those threads, I took it upon myself that if I was ever successful in getting it on my device (Motorola Atrix MB860, locked to T-Mobile UK), I'd share my experience and hopefully create a how-to in the process that I am hoping will be useful to others.
Please be advised that this is the completed version of this simple guide, my actual process involved me having to back track and read several threads, then re-read some more other threads just to make sure I did the proper thing.
* Deposit Files Main
* MediaFire Mirror
* Filesonic Mirror
* Megaupload Mirror
Select that.
Type "cmd" then press "Enter".
l. In the command prompt window, type in "cd\MotorolaMB860toCM7". This will change your working folder to that of where the files are.
Again ensure any prompts are finished before proceeding.
d. Your command prompt should still be open, and your working directory should still be "C:\MotorolaMB860toCM7\".

I needed to be in the fastboot directory to execute the fastboot commands using moto-fastboot [command].
Also needed to copy the recovery image to the fastboot directory.
Otherwise, easy to complete in around 30 minutes as you say.
Thanks very much,
Jim
Awesome guide!
But one question, "cd\MotorolaMB860toCM7" would that work? Wouldn't you need to wright "cd C:\MotorolaMB860toCM7" (assuming everything is extracted to C
Thank you lovfors and yey365 for the tips! Have updated the thread now.
Gonna throw this guide in the General section. It's not development, so it doesn't belong here.

Thank you sir, I have amended the step with additional details. Cheers!
Awesome walkthrough, signed up just to say thanks. The only thing wrong was the recovery image didn't work for me, tried a few times then got one from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204500 and it worked great.

The answer to your question can be found here.
Do some research before asking basic questions!
What Doesn’t Work:
•Fingerprint sensor - Work in progress (not native to CM)
•Webtop - Work in progress (not native to CM)
OK I see now.
Thks
If its any consolation, the lockscreens for CM7 are more than capable. Having big fingers, the fingerprint scanner only worked 60% of the time for me. Still, here's to hoping it gets fully implemented.
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
The fingerprint scanner isn't about finger size, it's more about positioning and timing. I went from unlocking at a 70% rate to a 100% by just knowing how to position my fingers and sliding slowly, but not too slow. Unlocking in 1-1.5 second(s) sure beats typing the pin or having a unsecured phone.
I flashed to a GB ROM until CM7 gets it. CM7 has some sensitivity problems for me (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331631) and it also cannot play HD flash yet. Don't get me wrong, I love what the devs are doing for CM7 and I support them all the way, but I just can't find myself to use it as my daily ROM until the small things (big for me) are patched out. Other than the problems mentioned, it is the best, it gives AMAZING battery life. About double what the GB ROMs give us, which is great. But I am willing to sacrifice charging every 1.5 days instead of 3 for Fingerprint and HD Flash.
Thanks for this guide, Will make my wife very happy.
She got the Atrix from t-mobile uk yesterday and hated it.
Her galaxy s cm7 was faster and my defy cm7 kept with up with it.
lets hope cm7 does it normal job and matches amazing hardware with amazing software.
Hey I need some help! I rooted my phone, unlocked bootloader and installed CWM as per in instructions in the noobs guide sticky and now have been trying to install CM7.
When it goes into the recovery screen I tried to install the cm7 zip file from the internal storage and it keeps giving me a installation aborted error:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
Does anyone know how to get around this or what I am doing wrong??
I know you guys hate noobs and everything but this is starting to piss me off and I could use some help
i cant get to this step:

b. Turn on your phone, and after the phone completely boots up, connect it to your computer. You should use Mass Storage as the connection option in the phone.
my computer cannot detect my atrix having storage space.
so the only way i can install the cm7 rom is to "install from external sd card"
although it was successful, i got the error message during the installation, "error mounting /emmc"
i dont know if this error related to the following issue. i can only detect 1.97gb internal storage in the setting and the rest of the storage is missing!!
someone got the same problem and figured out the solution?

MoFo will NOT work on 5.1 so do NOT upgrade to the 5.1 bootloader or partition table if you want to use MoFo.
This method involves purchasing a piece of software named mofo.exe that allows you to flash a modified, unsigned system image to your device despite its locked bootloader. The cost is $20. Links to the modified images for the XT1096 and XT1097 are found in the OP of the MoFo support thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/paid-software/mofo-root-turbo-t3064404
This Method Does Not Disable Write Protection. Please read the following post if you don't know what that means:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60412113&postcount=292
This Method Trips the Root Checker and Your qe Will Convert to qe 1/1 Permanently! What this means is that if you boot your phone into recovery, you will see qe 1/1, which means you are currently running modified software. The qe will stay at 1/1 even if you flash back to stock.
1. Check Your Software Version and Enable USB Debugging
Go to Settings -> About Phone and read your Android Version – it should say 5.0 on the XT1096 and 5.0.2 on the XT1097. If not, and it says 4.4.4, you are still on 4.4.4 and as long as you have not modified your system by flashing using mofo.exe, you should still be stock and can take the 5.0 or 5.0.2 OTA.
If you haven’t already, go into Settings -> About Phone and click on Build Number repeatedly until you get the message you are developer now (or something like that). Then hit the back button and you will see that the Developer Options now appear. Click on Developer Options and check USB Debugging.
2. Install Motorola Device Manager (MDM) and Drivers to Your Computer
You can download MDM and the drivers here:
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/88481
Install MDM on your computer after you download it. MDM should install the drivers.
3. Download Copies of Adb and Fastboot
You can get these from the Adroid SDK but you don’t need the whole Android SDK. Root Junky has the files you need on his site here:
http://rootjunkysdl.com/?device=Adb Fastboot Files
I made a folder on my computer named c:\mx2014 and put the zip file in there. Then I unzipped it with 7-zip.
http://www.7-zip.org/
4. Download a Copy of the Official Firmware
Root Junky has a copy of the XT1096 5.0 official firmware here:
http://rootjunkysdl.com/?device=Moto X 2014&folder=Official Firmware
and the XT1097 5.0.2 fxz is here:
http://www.filefactory.com/file/1cekivswpakf/VICTARA_ATT_XT1097_5.0.2_LXE22.46-34_cid1_CFC.xml.zip
You should download it into a separate folder (I put mine in a folder named c:\mx2014\lollipop) and unzip it so if you have any problems you can flash back to stock. Place a copy of fastboot.exe, adb.exe, AdbWinApi.dll and AdbWinUsbApi.dll in the folder with the lollipop official firmware.
Also if you are planning on taking the 5.1 OTA when it is released, you would need to flash your system back to stock so it is a good to have it ready. And if you are planning to update to 5.1 via MDM I would still flash back to stock because if you don't, IME MDM will detect that you are running a modified software and will wipe your device when it upgrades you to 5.1. If you flash back to stock first, MDM will not wipe your data and sdcard when it upgrades you to 5.1.
5. Test the Drivers and Adb
Once you have completed Steps 1-3, you can test the drivers and adb. Power on your phone and after it boots, connect it to your computer via the data cable. Open a command prompt, and then navigate to the directory where you have adb and fastboot by typing:
cd c:\mx2014 (or wherever you have adb and fastboot stored)
and hitting enter. Then type:
adb devices
You should then see a prompt on your phone asking you to authorize your computer. Check always allow and click OK. Adb should show you the serial number (not the IMEI) of your device.
Now type:
adb reboot bootloader
to get into bootloader (BL) mode (aka fastboot mode).
6. Test the Drivers and Fastboot
Once you are in BL mode, double check that on your phone’s screen right above the first green line you see this:
Transfer Mode: USB Connected.
If it does not say that, go to Root Junky’s site and download the Motorola drivers and manually install them.
http://rootjunkysdl.com/?device=Android Drivers&folder=Motorola
Then type:
fastboot devices
and hit enter. Fastboot should return your device’s serial number.
7. Test Getting into Recovery and Wiping Cache
While in BL mode, scroll down to Recovery by pressing the vol dwn button to highlight Recovery. Then select Recovery by pressing vol up. You should see the dead android with a red triangle having an exclamation point in it coming out of its stomach. Then press the pwr button for a couple of seconds and then press and release the vol up button and then release the pwr button to get into the recovery menu. Use the vol dwn button to scroll to wipe cache partition and then press the pwr button to select it. You should see that the cache is being formatted.
When cache is done being wiped, the recovery menu should reappear and you should hit the pwr button to reboot into system.
8. Test That You Know How to Get Into Bootloader Mode Using Buttons
Disconnect your phone from your PC, power down your phone and then hold down volume down and then press and hold the power button. Hold both buttons simultaneously for about 4 seconds and then release the power button and then the volume down button. This should put you in Bootloader mode (aka fastboot flash mode). Alternatively, you can try pressing volume down + volume up + power and holding for about 4 seconds then releasing.
Once in BL mode, you can either hit the power button to boot back into Android or if you want to test that you know how to flash back to a stock system, complete the instructions in Step 9.
NOTE – flashing the system partition does NOT affect your apps/settings/text messages/call history, which are stored on the data partition, not the system partition. Updates to system apps since 5.0/5.0.2 was rolled out will be lost as well as any system app settings that are relevant to the updates or stored on the system partition.
NOTE – flashing the system partition does NOT affect your stored media (e.g, pictures, music, videos), which are stored on the sdcard partition, not the system partition.
9. Test That You Know How to Flash Stock System (Optional)
While in BL mode you can test that you know how to flash back to a stock system. This is optional but if you have never done it before, it is a good idea to do it IMO. When you flash a system.img, you do not lose your apps/data/texts or your media unless the app is a system app, then you will lose the updates since 5.0 was rolled out (but those can be re-downloaded from the Playstore). However, it is always a good idea to backup before you flash in case you do something wrong. I use SMS Backup and Restore to backup my texts and my photos are backed up to my Google account.
Put your device in BL mode and then connect it to your computer. Open a command prompt and navigate to where you have the stock 5.0/5.0.2 image stored on your computer. Type the following:
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk1
and then hit enter to flash the first sparsechunk. Repeat for the other sparsechunks until you have flashed all 9 of them. Then boot into recovery, wipe cache and boot into system.
10. Purchase MoFo.exe
First you should go to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/paid-software/mofo-root-turbo-t3064404
and read all of the information. And be sure to watch Root Junky’s video here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXAYjbf76II&feature=youtu.be
The high level summary of what you will be doing is this:
1. Verifying that your device qualifies for purchasing mofo.exe by using MoVerify;
2. Using the link generated by MoVerify to navigate to where you can purchase mofo.exe; and
3. Purchasing and downloading mofo.exe.
11. Download, UnZip and Flash a Pre-rooted Ext4 Image
The OP of the MoFo thread has links to the pre-rooted images that are available for the XT1096 and XT1097. Once you download one of them, unzip it and move the image file to wherever you have mofo.exe stored on your computer. Put your device into BL mode and connect it to your PC. Then navigate to where mofo.exe is stored on your computer, click on mofo_gui.bat and a command window will open. Type the following at the command prompt:
mofo.exe flash [Insert name of image file here]
then hit enter. Of course you do not put brackets around the name of the image file. Once the pre-rooted image has been flashed (about 25 minutes), boot into recovery and wipe the cache then boot into system.
It may take a few seconds for the boot animation to start so don’t panic. Once the system has booted, to check that you are rooted, download root checker basic from the Playstore and confirm that you are rooted. Your device will also bypass the subscription check when you turn on WiFi hotspot.
The copy of mofo.exe that you buy is specific to your device. It cannot be used on any other device, including any warranty replacement devices that you may get in the future. But you can use it on your device as much as you want once you purchase it - unless you upgrade to a higher version of Android. If you upgrade to a higher version of Android, once that higher version of Android is supported by MoFo for your device, you can re-download mofo.exe for the higher Android version.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60471334&postcount=432
Mofo will NEVER be updated to support 5.1 as the exploit was closed with the 5.1 bootloader.
Thank you for the guide and for the testing - its a great service to Moto X owners.
Tried going through it this morning but it appears the Mofo site is down... Anyone else having trouble?

It is best to ask on the MoFo support thread where you are more likely to get maiko1's attention.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/paid-software/mofo-root-turbo-t3064404
Adding this to the OP
This is from the MoFo support forum - there appears to be some confusion about mofo.exe being device specific. The copy of mofo.exe you buy is specific to your device. It cannot be used on any other device, including any warranty replacement devices that you may get in the future. But you can use it on your device as much as you want once you purchase it.

might want to expand the MoVerify process with little baby steps.... the Mofo site and the Mofo forum here are again very sparse on details.
1) download and unzip the MoVerify program
2) connect you phone to computer
3) open cmd window
4) navigate to c:\mx2014 (or wherever you have adb and fastboot stored)
5) type adb devices
6) type adb reboot bootloader
7) navigate to the MoVerify folder
8) go to the folder that represents your computer's OS; let's assume Windows here
9) in the Windows folder, double click on "mofoverify_gui.bat"
10) MoVerify will open a cmd window and return back that your devices was found and give a link that looks like
https://mofo.disekt.org/verify/ [big long alphanumeric string]
11) right click anywhere in the text that is in the MoVerify cmd window and select "Select All" and then hit enter
12) open Notepad or other text editor and past the text
13) cut and paste the https address into your browser
14) follow steps to purchase Mofo
i have purchased but have not gotten farther yet... may have some more suggestions later...
Nice job putting this together. And thanks for all of your testing during the process!
is there any difference in getting into BL mode by pressing phone buttons versus connecting phone to computer and using adb?
i ask b/c there are several places in the directions above where you say "put you phone into BL mode, then connect it to your computer"
could those equally say, "connect your phone to your computer, open a cmd window, navigate to c:/mx2014, and type adb reboot bootloader to get into BL mode"
i find it is easier to go the adb route to get into BL mode, as pressing the buttons is more of a skill. if these two merhids are equivalent for this mofo process, maybe both options should be stated in the step by step.
is there any time when the button method MUST be used?
---------- Post added at 06:40 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:33 AM ----------
one more question more out of curiousity than need to know... why does flashing back to the stock system take sequential flashing 9 "sparse chunks" (as in your step 9), whereas the mofo flash of the modified sys img is a single step?

True but if you soft brick your phone, the buttons are the only way to get into bootloader mode so best to be familiar with this way.
Did you try holding vol dwn/up and pwr simultaneously for 4 seconds and then releasing? After the lollipop update I swear that works the best for me. Let me know if that works more reliably for you - it does for me.

If you get into a bootloop or your screen goes black and the phone is unresponsive.

one more question more out of curiousity than need to know... why does flashing back to the stock system take sequential flashing 9 "sparse chunks" (as in your step 9), whereas the mofo flash of the modified sys img is a single step?

Standard fastboot has a size limitation on how large of a file it can flash. So system images above that size limitation have to be broken down into smaller chunks. The version of the 5.0 Official firmware that is available to us is the one on Root Junky's site and that one is broken down into chunks.
Motorola made a modified version of fastboot, often referred to as mfastboot, that can flash larger files. However, I cannot find a version of mfastboot that can flash the 5.0 system.img (fxz) that we have available to us. If anyone has a version of mfastboot that can flash the 5.0 fxz system.img, then you could flash it. RSD Lite may be able to flash it, idk I didn't try it.
As for mofo.exe - mofo.exe has a way to avoid the size limitations of standard fastboot. Idk why standard fastboot has a size limitation in the first place. But it does and so large files have to be broken down into chunks when you use standard fastboot to flash. Mofo.exe doesn't have that same size limitation.

Once you download one of them, unzip it and move the image to wherever you have mofo.exe stored on your computer. Put your device into BL mode and connect it to your PC. Then navigate to where mofo.exe is stored on your computer, click on mofo_gui.bat and a command window will open. Type the following at the command prompt:
mofoe.exe flash XT1096_5.0_22.21.11_rooted.img
then hit enter.

ok. so i attempted this today
1) powered off phone
2) booted in BL mode using power and volume buttons (yes it does work very well, esp after taking the phone OUT of the case so buttons are more fully accessible) - phone screen says "AP Fastboot Flash Mode (S)" at very top
3) plugged phone into computer
4) double clicked the mofo_gui.bat to open cmd window
5) copy and pasted your text exactly
6) after hitting enter, i got the following error
======================================
'mofoe.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
======================================
methinks you have a typo in your mofo command... extra "e" that should not be there??
taking out the "e" worked and it flashed
it then said
=====================
Flashing 'XT1096_5.0_22.21.11_rooted.img' to device. Do not interrupt.
Progress: 100%
Complete. Press power to start.
=====================
i pushed the power button. it passed though a screen showing the battery level at 97%, but it has not fully booted up... black screen for like ?5 minutes!
if i hit the power button again, it still showed the battery level screen
so i pressed and held BOTH the power and volume buttons, and it booted!
when i power down, it goes to the batter level screen. and i can't seem to get into BL mode using the power and volume buttons
however, i can get to BL, then Recovery using adb, and was able to wipe cache partition
i installed and ran Root Checker Basic ... make sure you click "Grant" when it asks for permission while checking root access, or it will return a "no root access" message.
i now have wifi tethering! yahoo!
unfortuantely, the wifi hotspot toggle widgets i have tried from the Play Store seem to be able to turn hotspot on from the homescreen... i tried like the first two or three that came up when i searched for "wifi hotspot toggle"... anyone have one that works??
i am running Nova Launcher... could that be the issue with the widget not working?
otherwise, i have to go into Settings to turn it on/off... which is better than NOT having hotspot at all!

That is b/c it is connected to your computer. The same thing will happen if you have it plugged into the wall.

Go to your app drawer - there is a Mobile Hotspot icon there. Just press and hold it and drag it to your homescreen.

tried that... that does take you into Settings so you can turn on the hotspot.
i was hoping to get an app or widget that would turn the hotspot on/off from the home screen with one click, w/o having to do multiple clicks.

After mofo runs and says complete, it says to hit the power button to restart. What you really want to do is hit the volume up button to activate the highlighted "normal bootup" option in the bootloader menu. This avoids all the weirdness if you're connected to power and using the power button.

The image with busybox in it also enables the hotspot QS tile which works great to enable/disable the hotspot. If WiFi is on, it turns off the WiFI, then turns on the hotspot. If the WiFi was on, it remembers to re-enable it when turning the hotspot off.

thanks! I suggest booting into recovery and wiping cache before you boot back into Android.

There is a Hotspot toggle in quick settings. From your lock screen, just swipe down from the top of the screen to see it. From your home screen, swipe down with 2 fingers.
