loving my streak ive just come to put an avi file on it and it wont play ... from reports the streak will play any format ??
is this not true or do i need to download something for an avi file to play
You will need rock player to play avi's.
Hi mancuk29
No idea where you have seen it reported the Streak will play any video file as the built in player plays limited amount of formats Divx and Avi's not being in the list. But as zero.fx has already pointed out Rock Player is a great player that plays most formats and is free with ads or not that expensive for the no add version but make sure you get the v7 version that supports the Streak best. As long as the files are well encoded it should play virtually anything you throw at it in great quality.
Marc
see also vplayer, plays my avi just fine & is free from market (prob someone has uploaded apk on here somewhere)
& no, i don't have any association with vplayer developer in anyway!!

i remember just dragging n dropping avi movies on my Blackberry bold ..i can just play the movie and enjoy it.
but on X1..the Windows media player says 'cannot play the file'
why?
isnt it supposed to be more friendly with such formats?
NO..i am not willing to pay for a software just to play a world famous .avi format.
avi
simple answer is NO you can not play avi's out of box. you have a couple options....either re-encode the video to another format or dl a different player. I like coreplayer and i know alot of other people like it as well. some people just get the divx player but you have to know what was used to encode the video as avi is only the container file and not the encoder.
most of my videos are DivX encoded...
so is it possible to install DivX codec on X1 and then play those files?
really sad but..i thot i can just drag n drop the movies on my mSD and watch
yeah using coreplayer or TCPMP
not sure if the codecs works with windows mobile media player though
but those 2 players does the job
Okay thanks a lot for the quick response guys.
i got hold of Coreplayer....just wanted to try.
it works..i just dragged n dropped some TV shows and movies ..and they work fine
i have yet to see such an awesome clarity on a mobile phone.
this is even better than bold because i can see the movies in widescreen and the contrast is superb
exist an avi player for android?
i have done a search for this and have found nothing so far..
No. So far Android can't play regular AVI files. You need to convert videos if you want to watch them on your android phone.
Here's how to do it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=441063
AVI is just a container to hold compressed images, if the compressed images were H264 then decoding and displaying video would be straight forward. However, most of the AVI files I have are divx which the G1 can not decode due to the lack of suitable codecs.
Actually there is a player in the marketplace called android7 avi player...it plays avi from the root of the sdcard...what it does is the first time you hit play it takes a minute while it converts to the right avi format for the player..after that you have a new playable avi
it works perfectly with now problems?
amir
does it convert everytime you try to watch that video file? or just ONCE?

User comments for that app are quite negative: http://www.cyrket.com/package/org.android7.aviplayer
when will we have a good video player for android which plays most common formats?????????
There's this "Yxflash" app from the Market which claims to play avi divx files. I tested it for myself, and it works, to an extent. Videos are extremely laggy so they're not pleasant to watch, but it does work.

rockplayerbase-player

download at : http://www.mediafire.com/?enolzhkrmmy
at least it works on HTC HD2 android port
thanks to the devs
Enjoy
I found an awesome app in marketplace called 'arcmedia'. Works a treat! I was using rockplayer...but this one is alot better.
I use ArcMedia player.. free in market. Seems to play anything. Plays AVI's that Double Twist and others wouldn't.
divx is nothing more than h.263. The hardware decoder on the device is FULLY capable of decoding these. The problem is that divx are douchebags, and instead of using the proper fourcc "h263", they replace it with one of "divx", "div3" or "div4".
If you want to play those files, you do NOT need to reencode them -- just need to FIX THE FOURCC!!! ffmpeg is capable of doing this -- the command would be "ffmpeg -i infile -acodec copy -vcodec copy -vtag H263 outfile"
** if you compile ffmpeg for armv5, your phone is plenty strong enough to handle this itself very easily!

I have used yxflash on my G1 and it works quite well. It looks like it drops some frames playing divx, but it's really not bad at all considering it was never designed to play divx encoded video.
Just a shame the battery life is getting really terrible on mine now. New battery 8 months ago and it's starting to go again. Waiting for the Desire Z now though, so not going to replace it.
rockplayer
rockplayer in market plays .avi
watching green hornet r5 on my nook color with Honeycomb as we speak.
Try QQ Movie player. It works for both my mp4 videos (with some considerate lag on my G1) and 3gp/avi/etc files.
Though Android is developed by the Open Handset Alliance, this smartphone platform only supports H.263, H.264 AVC, MPEG-4 SP and VP8 video format. Hence it is impossible to play AVI on Android phones.
in order to play avi, you can first convert it to android compatible video format
I read everywhere that people are using rockplayer to play various video formats such as xvid & divx.
I also thought I would need the rockplayer to play my videos...
While I did try rock player, most of my videos were lagg/choppy and most videos were well out of sync, many files didn't even play and this resulted in a crash/freeze...
Not long ago, I was browsing through my media and saw my videos as well as the preview!
I tried them all with the default player on the dell streak and it played ALL videos smoothly, clear & in sync...
If the default player plays almost everything, why are people moaning about software needed to play video's?
The default player does not play AVI FILES that' why we need Rock player
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App

Ahh, I see, so the default player plays most formats but does not play .avi?
That's fine as most of my videos are xvid...
Also, why does every single video I have lag and the audio is out of sync with rockplayer or even yxflash player?
That's why I use the built in player for the time being until Android 2.2 is out as it should fix & improve the functionality of the phone as well as make it even faster/smoother and if were lucky, improve battery life!

avi is a container which can be used for the xvid/divx codecs amongst others.
Anyone struck this hurdle yet ?
Got my tab all set up yesterday... charged it over night, played with it today... thought, right... about to go to bed, might load up a few videos to watch...
Well... I think i was expecting to much for it to play anything out of the box when i went looking for the video player app and there isnt one. You can open files in Gallery... but there is another issue... divx/xvid files with avi extensions do not even show up as being on the device. MKV files do. And they play... all be it with no sound. This started me on a quest... over to the Xoom forums to have a look at those guys... download all of their suggestions... Ok, got the divx sorted. every video player i downloaded would play divx/xvid files with ease. no surprise there... still no files showing up in gallery...
The closest i got to playing a 720p mkv file was with rockplayer... but i ran into the similar issues with rockplayer. when i used it to play the mkv files, if i used hardware decoding, crystal clear picture... no sound. If i used software decoding, sound works... but now the picture it all chopped up and way out of sync...
For the moment it looks like it's back to encoding the mkv files back to xvid... As for this device being able to play 1080p video... i wont hold my breath. From what i have seen of how it plays 720p, it may come in the next update, but for now it even appears to be struggling to play 720p let alone 1080p...
Any ideas, tips or trick you have found that works for playing different video types???
I'm using MoboPlayer which downloads the needed codecs from the Android Market. Tried both divx and xvid, works great.
Also using rockplayer. Will try mobo.
Sent from my GT-P7100 using XDA App
I've also tried QQPlayer which isn't bad and Vital Player, which so far seems to be the smoothest player I've used so far.
I haven't tried mobo yet though.
mobo rulles
no suggestions on MKV yet ??

MoboPlayer is supposed to support the mkv container format (haven't tried myself).
Quote from MoboPlayer official site:
"The current Mobo version will not support mkv, mov container format which have built-in subtitle streams, but we will complete this feature as soon as possible."
So, it supports MKV as long as it doesn't contain built-in subtitles. I will try it later tonight and report the results.
mVideoPlayer: mkv + subtitle
Mobo player plays .mkv incl. streams. That is ofc on a Galaxy S phone. On a tegra 2, device as far as I have read, there isn't much luck plying .mkv files as the soc doesn't support them. Go figure.
Going to finally get around to putting some videos on my tab. I just wondered what format was best? Do you guys use the stock video player? Probably will mostly be anime stuff and am planning on just converting with Sony Vegas.
Any help would be great!
the best format for the tab seems to be mp4, but I play 720p mkv files fine too, including over wireless. The stock video player won't cut it so you should get a better player. There's plenty on the android market, mx player and mobo player are free, dice player is not. I use mx and it works fine.
I haven't yet found a format that BSPlayer won't play fantastically Plus it's free, so there's no reason not to IMHO...just remember it'll ask you to install a plugin first time round - install whichever one it asks you too, that'll improve performance as it will use hardware decoding
Change your video format to mp4 with a xivd or dvix code, you will find it so cool in this tab. This format support 1080p video.
This tab is weak with h.264 code.
Thanks to all you guys got it working great with Bsplayer!
