i remember just dragging n dropping avi movies on my Blackberry bold ..i can just play the movie and enjoy it.
but on X1..the Windows media player says 'cannot play the file'
why?
isnt it supposed to be more friendly with such formats?
NO..i am not willing to pay for a software just to play a world famous .avi format.
avi
simple answer is NO you can not play avi's out of box. you have a couple options....either re-encode the video to another format or dl a different player. I like coreplayer and i know alot of other people like it as well. some people just get the divx player but you have to know what was used to encode the video as avi is only the container file and not the encoder.
most of my videos are DivX encoded...
so is it possible to install DivX codec on X1 and then play those files?
really sad but..i thot i can just drag n drop the movies on my mSD and watch
yeah using coreplayer or TCPMP
not sure if the codecs works with windows mobile media player though
but those 2 players does the job
Okay thanks a lot for the quick response guys.
i got hold of Coreplayer....just wanted to try.
it works..i just dragged n dropped some TV shows and movies ..and they work fine
i have yet to see such an awesome clarity on a mobile phone.
this is even better than bold because i can see the movies in widescreen and the contrast is superb

Is it possible to download codecs from the internet for your pocket pc just like your home pc, as some video files i have copied onto my xda ii will not play, if so what is the best site to get these from?
Thankyou, as always!
Whats file types are you using.
Pocket TV plays MPEG's very nicely.
Also try MVP for other types including XviD's.
You will have to Google for them as I don't have the adresses
I use this DivX player (Mpeg4), don't know if it works with WM player.
Is that the codec Bob?
Yes, it is.
I compressed .avi file using DivX ;-) MPEG4 Fast/Low-Motion with Hero Video Convert and was able to play it on my MDA
but having the codec will not make mediaplayer play anything but
ms's own formats plus mp3
to play anything else mediawise you need 3th party players
If you need to play divx you should try BetaPlayer at http://beta.topcat.hu/ , it's amazing how fast the decoding is, I can see no differences with a divx played on a PC (feeding it with a 320x240 movie of course)..
Yes BetaPlayer is pretty good : very stable with good decoding capabilities definitely the way to go to read Mpeg4 on your PPC
exist an avi player for android?
i have done a search for this and have found nothing so far..
No. So far Android can't play regular AVI files. You need to convert videos if you want to watch them on your android phone.
Here's how to do it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=441063
AVI is just a container to hold compressed images, if the compressed images were H264 then decoding and displaying video would be straight forward. However, most of the AVI files I have are divx which the G1 can not decode due to the lack of suitable codecs.
Actually there is a player in the marketplace called android7 avi player...it plays avi from the root of the sdcard...what it does is the first time you hit play it takes a minute while it converts to the right avi format for the player..after that you have a new playable avi
it works perfectly with now problems?
amir
does it convert everytime you try to watch that video file? or just ONCE?

User comments for that app are quite negative: http://www.cyrket.com/package/org.android7.aviplayer
when will we have a good video player for android which plays most common formats?????????
There's this "Yxflash" app from the Market which claims to play avi divx files. I tested it for myself, and it works, to an extent. Videos are extremely laggy so they're not pleasant to watch, but it does work.

rockplayerbase-player

http://androidcommunity.com/rockplayerbase-player-avi-mkv-divx-and-rmvb-for-android-20100615/
download at : http://www.mediafire.com/?enolzhkrmmy
at least it works on HTC HD2 android port
thanks to the devs
Enjoy
I found an awesome app in marketplace called 'arcmedia'. Works a treat! I was using rockplayer...but this one is alot better.
I use ArcMedia player.. free in market. Seems to play anything. Plays AVI's that Double Twist and others wouldn't.
divx is nothing more than h.263. The hardware decoder on the device is FULLY capable of decoding these. The problem is that divx are douchebags, and instead of using the proper fourcc "h263", they replace it with one of "divx", "div3" or "div4".
If you want to play those files, you do NOT need to reencode them -- just need to FIX THE FOURCC!!! ffmpeg is capable of doing this -- the command would be "ffmpeg -i infile -acodec copy -vcodec copy -vtag H263 outfile"
** if you compile ffmpeg for armv5, your phone is plenty strong enough to handle this itself very easily!

I have used yxflash on my G1 and it works quite well. It looks like it drops some frames playing divx, but it's really not bad at all considering it was never designed to play divx encoded video.
Just a shame the battery life is getting really terrible on mine now. New battery 8 months ago and it's starting to go again. Waiting for the Desire Z now though, so not going to replace it.
rockplayer
rockplayer in market plays .avi
watching green hornet r5 on my nook color with Honeycomb as we speak.
Try QQ Movie player. It works for both my mp4 videos (with some considerate lag on my G1) and 3gp/avi/etc files.
Though Android is developed by the Open Handset Alliance, this smartphone platform only supports H.263, H.264 AVC, MPEG-4 SP and VP8 video format. Hence it is impossible to play AVI on Android phones.
in order to play avi, you can first convert it to android compatible video format
Hi
I know there are a few video player out there like divx, core player and the media player itself. What I usually watch at home are
avi files, mkv, real player, not much of mp4 unless I need to transcode them myself. Someone give me some idea what I will most likely to use or be able to read smoothly with the tp2. Thank you.
Not sure what you are asking
On my T-Mobile Touch Pro2 I use the stock media player that comes on the ROM.
For movies and downloaded videos I use the "Microsoft Zune" mp4 setting for videos.
For example, on my DVD movies I have used Slysofts "AnyDVD" and CloneDVD Mobile for converting my movies into a format that will play on my TP2.
The Slysoft Clone DVD Mobile has various encoders you can select, depending on the device you have.
I spent a half day trying various settings because "Touch Pro2" was not one of the available settings. I eventually found that "Microsoft Zune (MP4)" works perfect.
Not sure if I can provide links, so just Google "Slysoft CloneDVD mobile" and the site will come up.
Hope that helps.
Sidenote: Windows WMV format also plays on the TP2 but as you might suspect the quality is horrible and it lags big time.

What? WMV is usually better quality for me.
I know that the tab is divx certified but, i would like to know if it is possible to play divx in the browser? On sites like stagevu, loombo and vidxden.
Thanks in advance.

No,
i am not able to play divx videos from web.... its showing the plugin symbol
That all said, my Tab is loving XviD dvd rips
I mainly want the Tab for Xvid DVD rips. Do you know if the Tab plays avi's that our encoded with an AC3 soundtrack rather than MP3. a lot of dvd rips have Ac3 rather than MP3 and I heard that the galaxy cannot support multichannel soundtracks.
It has played all files I have tried until now. avis' in a lot of formats, divx. h.264 all new series. It even does mkv files in 720p with no problems or lag at all
ac3 is supported. But the stock player has decoding problems. Try vPlayer alpha - its the best atm.
so with vplayer alpha does it play 720p mkv files with AC3 (a52 codec) soundtrack, dont want to convert everything to AAC 2 channel or MP3.
Any word on firmware upgrades to fix stock video player???
None yet... but youre right, the stock player is very good otherwise! I love the browser and media library. And of course the ar control.
so can someone confirm does it play perfectly with another video player instead of the stock one.
As I said really interested in playback of 720p mkv with AC3 (5.1 sound)
Gonna try it when they are for sale next week, take my sd card and see if it works
Yep works fine in vplayer. But remember, no files larger than 4gb on internal storage.
Also, the 1080p playback advertised for the galaxy tab refers to divx and xvid I believe, so high profile move are square in third party player laps. Lets hope they make fixes too!
I was having quite a few problems playing HD mkv files, tried multiple players. The only player I found that played them well was BS player. Thought I would spread the word, I was rather annoyed that i was going to have to transcode a bunch of movies to play on this tablet but then i tried BS player and was incredibly surprised. Not sure if the pro version is worth the money, im hoping VLC will eventually be able to handle it.
EDIT: With software decoding MX player was able to play them as well. I tried DICE player as well and it also seems to work. For awhile I was having issues with those other 2 players but they seem to work fine now. It still depends a lot on other encoding settings but all these players seem to work fine with 720p mkv.
Vplayer is good also...
all these players can't play videos properly ......I would recommend u to convert video into mp4 or avi using formatfactory for PC .....once converted copy to ur tab and play using mx player or v player or stock ...........the resolution and bitrate adjustments make videos look lot smoother and plays without any hookups ......
HIT THANKS IF I HAVE HELPED
I have no problem with stock player and 720p mkv files as long as you don't use High Profile H.264 encoding. The file size will be a little bigger (than High Profile encodings) but that's about it.
