Why has nobody posted a thread about how turning the screen on is a pain in the ass?
Not only do I believe this power button is horribly designed, but I have to type this maze password in every time the screen shuts off after 15sec!
Why isn't there a timeout option when asking for the maze password (or whatever Android calls it)
It's a real buzz kill having to press this measly little power button every time I want to look at my phone. For those who have used newer Blackberries, this must also be a real hair puller for you also
This plus all the horrible battery life, GPS issues, 150kbps upload limit, is really making me plan a visit to my Sprint store on 9/30 unless half this crap gets fixed in the next week and a half, which we all know it won't

True, but there is no setting to delay pattern required.
I was looking for it too.
No idea if this is fixable in Tasker (paid app; totally worth the money imo) but I do have Tasker profiles set to turn off the pattern when charging (when I'm home or at work) or when connected to specific ssids on wifi (at home or at close friends' places). Tasker hasn't let me down yet...
I'll try and poke around when I have a chance.
Also as much as the bulk that hard cases add, one of the random benefits is finding the buttons easier.

LED Hacks is an app in the market free and it disables the bottom softkey lights so even in the darkest room you can't see that annoying light leakage..
Also will disable charging LED!
I don't care! I didn't know
I'd use this because I don't need then to be lit up, but also because since 2.2, they always come on.
If only LED hacks was actually in the market. :|

Yeah, I'd love such an application. Unfortunately I also cannot find it in the market.
Try one word ledshack
Its still in my market.
Ah, that shows it fine. Now I just have to find a good guide to rooting 2.2.
Edit: Typo, still getting used to swype.

But then you can't see your bottom keys, so doesn't that pretty much defeat the purpose?
Idk bout you guys but I've been playing with this phone for months now and I know exactly where all four soft buttons are without having to see them...I used to put a case on to cover the light leakage but not anymore....
It'd be nice if maybe someone can figure how dim permantly on boot
I haven't noticed any leakage at all.maybe I just haven't paid attention?

Is there another way of doing this without root?

Download terminal emulator and run these commands:
Code:
echo 0 > /sys/class/leds/button-backlight/brightness
That'll keep the capacitive keys backlight turned off 'til the next time you wake your phone from sleep with the power button.
There are numerous threads about getting better battery life involving different settings, turning on and off stuff manually and battery calibration etc etc but noone that really helped as much as what ive discovered now.
Me and my spouse has the same phone but we dont have the same operator. I have Telia which has the best coverage in this area while she has Telenor which is worse in general coverage making the phone work harder in the net + really bad when it comes to 3G coverage and thus having slow data connection.
Therefore we have very different standby time on our phones and ive tried to tweak it with different kernels, modems and different flashes but nothing that really helped.
So I made a thread to gather some info from various people but it hasnt growed that much yet (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=989266). 2nd post from "theduckking" showed that he was using an app called "tasker" which cost ~4euro (well worth the money if you have low battery time)
Now ive just started using it but I already have 69hours of standby and 27% left of battery and ive never had that amount of battery standby for a really long time! This is getting close to an old fashioned Nokia 3310 standby
My spouse isnt getting as much obvisually as she has worse coverage which drains more battery but she has gone from barely a day to 2 days standby with 10% battery left ~30hours and this is with the following method.
Note. Both our phones have the same configuration, its only the operator which is the difference
Rom: Darky 9.3 Final
Modem: JPY (its the one coming from the darky 9.3 flash)
Kernel: DamianGTO 1.1 Gold

Now two things that have made the battery last longer is first underclocking it to 800MHz and undervolt -100mV in CWM (this will only make a minor difference albeit noticeble)
And the grand thing that will really up your battery is the app called "TASKER".
Ive only setup two rules and that is to turn off mobile data and wifi when screen is off and turn them back on when screen is on. You can customize it further if you like but im just gonna show how to setup the basics.
After you have downloaded it, fire it up and press "new" and then just press "ok" select "event" and "display off", press "done"
Now press the "+" and "net" then "mobile data", make sure "Off" is selected and then press "Done".
Press "+" again and "net", "Wifi Net" check that it is saying "Disconnect" and press "Done" and press "Done" again to get back to the main menu of "Tasker"
Next rule so press "New" and "ok" again, then "event" and "Display" and select "Display On". Press "Done" and then press the "+" followed by "Net" and "Mobile Data", make sure the checkbox says "On" and press "Done" and you are set. Press home button to apply the settings and you should now have "Tasker" in the top row.
Now this fix will maybe not suit everyone but if you value battery time more than anything then its absolutely for you.
What will happen is that all data traffic will be completely turned off when the phones screen is off and the impact of this is
You wont recieve instant (push) gmail until you unlock your screen
Google talk will not let others see you online/busy when screen is off
If you are making calendar updates from google calendar online, the calendar updates wont appear until you unlock your screen
Probably other stuff that havent crossed my mind

Sorry about the dark image, I raised the contrast and brightness manually afterwards to make it somewhat readable (I forgot to disable the "screen filter" which I enable at nights when reading )
pretty interesting.. will give it a try..
Hardcore made a thread on how to conserve battery life by disabling hsdpa. You can search for it. It has helped me a lot.
I'm using "superpower" from the market and I will install tasker to see if there is new options
If you use Tasker just for Wi-Fi and data turn - off when screen is off you better use (IMHO) SuperPower app. You also better untick auto retrieve option in MMS settings or you will not receive MMS anymore with this settings.
yay I'm famous... or at least useful
I have my connection Tasks attached to this post. you just have to import them and set up rules when to execute them. I have one that starts the OffOnScreenLock task when the screen is locked, one that calls the reconnect task when the screen is unlocked and one that does call reconnect every 45min
View attachment connectionTasks.zip
experiment with it^^
EDIT:
I also set tasker up to enable and disable GPS automatically (when maps or navigation start it enables GPS, on close it disables it again)
It's fun to play around^^

I using Super Power long time too (although i have 3000 mAh battery ), and i have battry life about 4-5 days on normal using, and 2-3 days by heavy using SGS.
I ask, after your testing, if you can make comparision battery life, using Super Power and Tasker, wich is better ?
Thank you in advance
Regards
Same here. Using Super Power some months ago, but now I'm curious about Tasker.
Wonder if it's better thar Super Power. Anyone can confirm that?

I just took a small look at super power. I found nothing you can't do with (except the 2g/3g toggling but I did not try that) tasker. The difference is, that you have to set up your own tasks and functions and rules. you can also create widgets and use variables to alter the way your own task works. If you have some programming skills you will probably love it, otherwise it's lots of potential left unused. (like loops, if/else statements)
You can read up on it over at lifehacker.com
I agree of course. Then again if you are a developer might as well completely roll your own
Tasker is nice if you know how to use it. Doesn't do all the things SuperPower can do, but can do a lot of thing (though less on 2.3, I think ? Not sure).
Gotta decide what's your own cup of tea. Apps like SuperPower (and Juice Defender, and a number of others ones) try to make your life easier, while with apps like Tasker (and the right plugins, of course) you can make your own rules. It's often more difficult than it sounds, though!
I was waiting on a plane on Monday afternoon and decided to charge my phone using the stock Samsung charger. No problem, and it charged pretty quickly. This was a replacement phone, so it had taken me three days to reinstall and reconfigure my apps and phone settings. All of the sudden; I noticed it getting hot - SOUND FAMILIAR? My battery was dying so fast you could almost see the percentage going down. Power saving mode was enabled.
I called AT&T tech support yesterday and the lady had me download a remote access program from AT&T. I evidently had 26 applications running in background memory. Huh??? She told me that I have to manually close each program when I exit it by holding the Home button and swiping the program off to the left. This is shear madness! She told me there is no setting that will automatically close the program when I exit and that I have to do this each time or my battery will die. OK; I'm missing something here. This is my first non-Motorola phone in 27 years - my latest was my rooted, battery modded, Atrix HD with Pac Man 4.3 and I never had to close any programs manually on ANY version of Android in the past 3 years. Is she right? Is this something unique to the S4? Surely I'm missing something here. This can't be right.
Well. I'm think she's right, but don't wanna say to much . but in Dev options you can select number of background processes
BUT there is something like a task manager and plenty of them in the play store or all over the interweb

Just damn! That's crazy! The first S4 DID burn up and now this one got so hot that I couldn't make a phone call. The lady that I talked to said: "Yes; it (the first one) could have gotten so hot (microprocessor - plus, being inside a protective case) that it could have gotten that hot." Huh??? I'm no genius, but that's a serious safety issue; particularly, if you don't make that information readily and obviously available. As far as the number of processes running; I don't get it. How does the device NOT completely exit the program - or at least give you the option to assign that parameter in the operation of either the phone, operating system, or the program? Sounds like Windows 8 to me. That's one reason I dumped Win 8 and went back to Win 7. Insanity. I'll try the Developer Option first, since I saw that in there. Problem was; my phone would randomly dump Wi-Fi operation without warning, thus upping my data consumption, as well as randomly close other processes that I did want running. the only time I ever felt a slight increase in temperature in my Atrix was during a very long phone call.
Nonetheless; thanks for the information. I was sure hoping for better news, though.

I'm planning on installing my Flo Nexus in my car to replace the outdated stock navigation system. I was quite interested in Timur's USB ROM but it doesn't support Flo and doesn't look like he'll be adding it after cancelling the indiegogo campaign he started to fund it.
I've spent some time searching and looking at the different kernels and roms available, and for now am running ElementalX 1.7beta with an older CM nightly.
I think this meets most of my needs, but I have one little nitpick - is there anything out there that separates the "Wake on plug" action into two separate functions? I'd like the screen to wake up when power is applied, but not when power is removed as this is going to leave the screen on when I get out of the vehicle. Ideally when power is removed I'd like it to go to deep sleep immediately.
Thanks.
I've never used the app Tasker. But isn't that what people use when trying to accomplish that?

I've used tasker for different things, but have found it unreliable when it came to power events, at least in the past. I'll definitely give it a shot and see how it works for this scenario. Thanks for reminding me.
Any other suggestions out there in case Tasker doesn't do the trick, or other votes for Tasker?
I got an app called "Caffine" which keeps the screen on while plugged in/charging, and when I turn the car off I set the backlight to 15 seconds, that way it sleeps after 15 seconds. Works great.
If you don't mind me asking, how are you installing the tablet into your car?

I have an '06 Acura TL with OEM Navi system. I'm having a car audio shop relocate the navi screen (as it's tied to climate functions but I don't need to see it) and they're putting the tablet in its place. The goal is to have things looking stock while be far from it.

It's part of a complete stereo install I'm doing, and it's not cheap although it's not rip-off expensive either. I chose them because they are capable of doing good fabrication work and are going to need to put something together to hold the tablet securely in place behind the stock bezel.
Just wanted to update for people to know what I did. Tasker was the way to go to get exactly what I want, but I needed to add the Secure Settings plugin as well. With that plugin I was able to immediately turn on the screen when power is applied, as well as shut off the screen immediately when power is removed.
I've also attached other bits to these profiles, such as adjusting the CPU clock and disabling wifi/bluetooth when the screen is off. At this point I'm losing less than 10% battery for 24 hours of sleep, which is pretty good although I'd like to see if I can find any improvements. We'll see!
Hi Folks,
I am considering getting a G2. I mostly keep my phone in my jeans front pocket. I was wondering due to the button positions is there any issues with pocket dialling, waking up the screen etc if you keep it in your pocket?
Cheers,
Trev
I have the phone for a month or so, didn't have any problems regarding waking up the phone, starting apps or anything. Actually, this button setup makes it less likely for me to turn on the screen while getting the phone out of my pocket

No problem for me either. It's actually pretty handy because I can adjust volume through my pants pocket now.
To make stuff like this not happen, the threshold for how much force is needed to push down the button is maybe a bit high, the buttons are not super responsive. All in all I'm not over-excited about the whole thing, but they don't annoy me either.
Thanks folks. Are you happy with the G2?
I have had the phone for 2 months, I am a contractor, phone is in pocket all day long and I have never activated it in pocket. I am surprised, I actually am bending all day, putting pressure on that area, and it hasn't turned on.
Not problems whatsoever. If you are worried about it, just set up the lock screen for either a password, PIN, or pattern swipe in order to fully access the phone.

I've had numerous cell phones over the past 22 years, rooting / modding for the last several years, and most recently came from a Galaxy Nexus that must have seen many dozens of ROMs. The G2 is the best I've owned or used. The hardware button on the back is certainly different and takes a bit of getting used to, but it's fine where it is. I have a TPU case on my (Cruzerlite), and the cutout around the button makes it easier to locate the button by touch. Also - I've gotten to really like Knock On/Off -- I can easily use it one handed. So far, radio has been great, sound quality / calls excellent, battery life phenomenal. Screen superb. Fast, fluid -- and for the first time ever, I actually like most of the vendor skin: lock screen animations sync'd to weather (maybe it's the weather app? don't know) are very cool; unlock touch/drag is beautiful, windowed apps and qslide are sweet.
Much as I've insisted on Nova or Apex on other Android devices I like the stock LG launcher enough to be holding off so far. I love the view of the home pages that shows them on a carousel up top, with app / widget drawer below, so you can drag items right up and drop them on your chosen page (Next has something like this too -- very reminiscent!). I *love* being able to drag the corner of an app icon and have it transform into the appropriate widget. The *only* think I miss on this launcher right now is custom swipe assignments (one/two fingers down/up, etc) -- but I'm fine without for now.
The phone is a powerhouse and positively flies, even though the stock rom is still 4.2.2. Really looking forward to 4.4.2 on this. Might try it with Maladus ROM, or might just wait for official OTA. Truly superb phone. Extremely happy with it.
