Using the Omni 2 with T-Mobile? - Omnia II General

I’ve done a lot of research on other websites but I can’t seem to find much about using the Omni 2 with T-mobile on XDA. I was going to buy an unlocked version of the Omni 2 on Ebay and use it with my T-Mobile account. I previously had a Touch Pro 2, but I’m sick of it.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,

i'm assuming you mean t-mobile in the US? i'm using one with them for about 2 months without any problems so far, granted t-mobile's 3g band is 1700mhz so i don't have 3g speeds, which is fine with me since i don't have a data plan anyways (i use wifi where i can). was a little tricky setting up the mms settings to receive pictures full size though. either way i don't have any complaints, other than the fact i won't be able to use their 3g network.
i have an I8000L from canada btw, which means the 3g bands are 850/1900mhz which at&t uses, so i'm thinking of switching to them since i'm not on contract with t-mobile anymore, so i can take advantage of their 3g.
hope that helps a little. just noticed you posted this almost a month ago so maybe you already made a decision..

I am using an Omnia II in the UK (through resellers, because T-Mobile didn't have this handset). And 3G is fine where I am, no trouble with that here.

USA SERVICE PLANS

Just wanted to know what service plans would be good for JasJar in the USA.
I use T-Mobile but of course we americans are lagging behind on mobile technology communications. I find I cannot use half of the features and it doesnt even have EDGE support. So wondering if any of you have T-Mobile in the USA and what service/internet plans are you using? :?:

That's a bit of an exageration. The only thing you cannot use is 2100MHz UTMS. Everything else works fine.
You really only have Cingular and T-Mobile from which to pick in the US. Cingular has more coverage, but there are some 850MHz areas where the JasJar will not function as a phone. The TMo $20 unlimited gprs plan is pretty sweet. As others have lamented, the only thing this phone is missing (mostly for those of us on this side of the pond) is a quad-band radio, and EDGE or 1900MHz UTMS.

I definitely have to second this. I've looked at other plans, Cingular as well as going something "non-sim" before I got the Jasjar, and nothing seemed to come close to the $20 unlimited data with TMo. My minutes and data combined with TMo are less than the unlimited data alone with some others.
It all depends on your needs though. I don't spend a lot of time in areas that aren't covered by TMo, so that issue is moot and price can play a larger factor for me.
USA service plans
ahh I see your point. I just got the $20.00 unlimited data plan. Is there anything special needed to get it started. Does anybody know if Tmo will start coming out with 3G networks?

Unfortunately, the news on 3G networks in the USA is not very good for us Universal owners. Cingular has already started to implement their 3G service in a few markets in the US and will be expanding their 3G service in 2006. I haven't heard anything about T-Mobile's 3G plans yet. Unfortunately, however, Cingular's 3G network works at 1900MHz and T-Mobile's most likely will as well. This means that even if Cingular or T-Mobile provide 3G service the Universal won't work with it, because the Universal only supports 3G at 2100MHz.
In the US, the 2100MHz band currently belongs to the US Military and there are rumors that that band may be made available to cell phone providers in 2007, but even if that happens, but the time the band is available and the service providers start using it I'm sure that my universal will be obsolete.
I'm using a Universal in the USA right now, but I don't expect to ever be able to use it on a 3G network here.
Brett
EDGE on MDA Pro/JasJar
So you're saying EDGE won't work on the MDA Pro? According to T-Mobile, EDGE is already in place in most of its US network. Also, GPRS to EDGE from the providers standpoint basically involved a software update. Can this be done on the MDA Pro as well?
One final question. Anyone know how I can find out if my MDA Pro has the latest rom and where to get updates. My phone came from Germany (T-Mobile)?
The Universal does not do Edge afaik. The HTC Wizzard does do edge. So the only difference between the two for US users (who cant use 2100MHz UMTS) is the low res screen on the wizzard, and the fact that the wizzard is a whole lot more portable. Oh and the mini SD port!
Here in the UK, none of the networks support edge, which is a bit of a pain for wizzard owners! I would have had a wizzard for the smaller size if edge were available in UK, or if wizzard was 3G !
Nigel
Thanks
If I choose then to sell may MDA Pro, what would you recommend as being the most comparable item that will at least work with EDGE and UMTS @ 1900 in the USA. I am otherwise very satisfied but one reason why I paid a premium price was to have something that would not be obsolete too soon, be able to work with the next generation (3G) and be downward compatible (EDGE, GPRS).
I am happily using T-Mobile in the USA. I bought the jasjar knowing that I would be limited to GPRS on the data side. Its many other advantages make the compromise worth it to me.

US Carriers
I too am using my JasJar with T-Mobile in the US and am quite happy with the service. I recognize that I will not be able to use 3G with this device, but I'm OK with that. For me the features of the device far outweigh that single drawback.

Straight Answer on US Carrier Support

All;
I'm trying to find a straight answer on US carrier support for the HD. So far; I've read that there is:
1)No support for the HD in the US
2)Support for GSM only in the US
3)Possible support for 3G depending on your area
4)Working 3G support in some areas
So; what's the deal here? Do we have a "CONFIRMED" working HD in the US? The questions I'd like to have answered in one thread if possible:
1)What carriers are people currently using SUCCESSFULLY with the HD?
1a)What area is that working in?
2)How is the internet speed on it?
2a)If 3G is working, what kind of speed differences are you seeing?
2b)If 3G is working, what area are you in that it works for you?
3)If it is working for you in any form; were custom ROMS needed; or any sort of hack short of plugging in your SIM card?
3a)If needed; links would be great!
4)Any reported and confirmed 'show-stopping' bugs / problems using the HD in the US.
5)Any items or information we need to be aware of when trying to purchase this phone for US use? (Don't buy from EU...don't buy from AUS, avoid certain model versions...etc?)
Answers so far ((so you don't have to go searching for them!))
1) T-Mobile & ATT
1a) Wisconsin -ATT | Chicago - ATT
2) Edge = ok
2a) No - Wisconsin, Chicago
2b)
3) No hacks needed - plug in SIM card, possibly might have to select network from list
3a)
4) Problems sending MMS on AT&T. 99% send then fail.
5)
I'm using T-Mobile in the US.
Didn't have to do ANYTHING special at all to get it running. Stuck in my tmobile sim, it asked which carrier I wanted to use (T-Mobile US or Tuyo or something like that). I selected tmobile and wala.
Don't know about 3G as I do not have a data plan right now (it's $25 / month and I have Wi-Fi 88% of the time).
Have flashed and hard-resetted many times since with no problems.
ONLY PROBLEM: MMS will not work. I have searched all over and made sure that I have all the correct settings. However it will not work no matter what I try. Sending usually makes it to 99% then fails. Sucks.

The HD will work in the US on either T-Mobile or ATT.
I am using ATT in Wisconsin and can confirm the phone will not pick of 3G.
EDGE internet speeds are pretty good. I wouldn't go streaming youtube, however. Wifi is around in more places than you think...
I'm using the ROM that came on the phone. I popped in my ATT sim card and all the settings were detected and it worked in a matter of 30 seconds.
I am in Chicago area on AT&T and it works fine. No 3G data but edge is fine. I am streaming video using a slingbox and it works ok.

It's not the phone that won't pick up 3G but the lack of a network or cell masts transmitting a 3G/HSDPA signal. So people, lets not blame the phone if you subscribe to inadequate networks. 3G has been around for over 10 years. I can't believe americans still need a tutorial.

it's both the phone and network's fault, the phone for not having UMTS 850, 1700, or 1900. And the networks for choosing those frequencies over umts 900 and 2100.

Wow, a little full of yourself there? It's not like I climbed towers and decided to put 850 bands in America.
I believe if I made a $750 purchase, I would know whether or not the phone was capable of picking up US 3G bands or not.
But I guess your right, I should move to Europe to take advantage of the "adequate" networks.
There is no need to be a jerk about it.

I'm using mine on ATT, use mostly wifi which has been good, EDGE is good the few times I've used it (based on what I've heard from people using 3G on other phones, it's not that much better than wifi, but I'm sure that's location dependent). I'm using it in NC and surrounding states, have only sent/received MMS a couple of times but haven't had any problems yet. Didn't have to do anything except insert the SIM and choose ATT. I haven't seen the 3G icon pop up so that means no 3G compatibility where I'm at.
TMobile USA is great
I am an airline pilot and use my HD nationwide and it works splendidly in every city I have been to. EDGE is much, much better than GPRS that I had on my Imate Jasjar (Universal) but I would agree that the only drawback is to streaming YouTube. YouTube on EDGE is functional but it uses the lower quality mode.
I am successfully using MMS on TMo here in the USA so any trouble with it might just be a setting that needs to be tweaked. Having had some trouble with that on my JasJar in the past I just set it up manually and did just that when I got the HD. I didn't even try the default MMS settings, just deleted them and put my own in that I knew worked.
As for 3G, didn't work on my JasJar and not on my HD but for me it turns out to not be a deal breaker at all. Having had four different WM devices over 6 years, the HD is blowing me away. I really love it's speed, screen and size. HTC did a really nice (not great) job with the TouchFlo UI and hope that a few updates will make it great. Now that I installed the new Resco Explorer (GSFinder before) I don't need to use the stylus at all! I like that the most.
For those of you in the USA, give TMobile a try. I don't think you would be unhappy with their service and pricing.
Regards,
Gordo
I'm using iWireless (Owned by Tmobile) in Iowa. No problems getting it to work like all the others here. I don't have a data plan, so haven't tested that out yet. And it's just commonly known that the HD doesn't support US 3G.
It supports 3G, but we cant use it because the antenna is set to receive 2100 and 900.

You may need the data plan for MMS to work properly. I have T-mobile in the US and here is what I did. I signed up for their $9 amonth TZones (now web2go) package. Don't tell them you have a "smartphone" or else you will have to really fight to get it.
It is not great. You have a choice between 100 MB a month or 50 MB and tons of messaging. Since I mostly use WiFi the 50MB was enough.
If they tell you that the $9 plan won't work on their phone, don't fall for it. It will work on any phone.

WOW. That is WAY great information to know. So the $9 / month T-Zones is REAL full data / internet browsing? Not some stupid V-Cast like thing?
I have been dying trying to figure out what to do...when I signed up I thought unlimited data was $6 / month (it was some web2go thing for $5.99), then I find out that they discontinued it right after I got my phone and it's now $25...ridiculous. So I have been wondering, should I:
A. Switch to ATT.
B. Have an HD w/ no internet plan.
C. Go back to my vogue on sprint evdo rev a fastest mobile internet in us.
Are you pretty positive about that then? I could sign up for that right now and get 50mb browsing full internet for $9 / month as long as I tell them that it isn't a smartphone?
THANK YOU SO MUCH. AWESOME information for my situation...
Jim.
Uhm... perhaps I am missing something obvious but.
If i go to phone, then select "Options", then select "Band".
I can choose between network type "GSM" or "WCDMA".
Also for GSM/UMTS band I can choose between:
1) UMTS(2100)+GSM(900+1800)
2) UMTS(850+1900)+GSM(850+1900)
3) UMTS(800+2100)
Does that option have no effect? or what?

Is anyone else using their G1 with something other than T-Mobile/Vodaphone?

I'm just curious if anyone else is using their G1 with any other carriers. I'm using mine with AT&T and I love it, even if EDGE is a tad slow (but way better than GSM/nothing).
BTW, I heard something about AT&T implementing WCDMA for their 3G networks- is this true? If it is, that means I'll be able to get 3G on my G1 right? :]

Yes, I use mine with AT&T. AT&T already uses WCDMA for 3G, but it's on a physically different frequency than T-Mobile's 3G, so the T-Mobile G1 (which only supports T-Mobile's 3G/AWS bands) will never work on AT&T's high speed data network.
I am in the UK, and I use T-Mobile UK as my primary carrier. However, I do travel once in a while, so I got my phone unlocked and I always use a local card wherever I go.
I am in India.I use Airtel on EDGE.
AT&T here, bought the G1 at Wallyworld last Monday.
..
Using my unlocked TMo-G1 (not rooted) on Vodafone in Ireland.
O2 in the UK and i get 3G
Not G1 but ADP1 (because its better). Fido (Rogers) in Canada. No data plan at all since CDN data rates are retarded. No loss though since WiFi is everywhere
Fido in Canada
I was using my G1 on the 3 network for a few mounths.
i'm using an ADP1 in the UK on O2 network (pay monthly).
Works just great apart from the occasional 3G connection issue, but I strongly believe that to be my local area - I've had trouble with O2's connection at my house on different phones and with different O2 SIM cards.
I am in Bahrain. Using the G1 with Zain bh. the phone jumps from 3g to edge depending on location, but it has always been very reliable. BTW, mine is a unrooted, unlocked version running on rc33.
I have used my G1 on 3 networks in Honduras Tigo, Claro and Digicel works perfect now if i could only figure the last apn for the other carrier and i be set having tried it on all.
I use a G1 T-Mobile unlocket in Spain tried with "Movistar" and "Simyo", 3G/UMTS works great with both networks.
I'm using the g1 in hong kong with 3 and smartone. No probs at all lol
Im using mine in Dubai at Etisalat , 3G and EDGE are both working very well and pretty fast too.
Using JF ADP1.5

[Q] Usage of G2 overseas

I know this issue is partly addressed in a thread on not being able to connect to a network after unlock but I just want to share my own experience and disappointment with the G2 after going to Guatemala.
I have rooted my G2 using Visionary and am running Enomther's ROM pre-the Dec 24 update. Not using any other kernels or anything, but the phone is unlocked for use overseas with other SIMs.
Before I went to Guate I realized that I would be unable to get 3G given the bands used in Guatemala are different from what the G2 is capable of (I think Band I and IV). Fine.
However, I went down there and wanted to do some data roaming before I had a chance to get a local SIM card and I kept getting the message "SIM card not registered to this network". I tried all three carriers in Guatemala to no avail.
When I went to get a SIM card from a local carrier it took a lot of effort on their part to get my phone connected to the internet but eventually I was able to score Edge service with one of the carriers down there. Being Guatemala I don't know if this process was difficult due to the way data plans work down there (prepaid) or if there was something specific with the G2 that prevented it from connecting to the network.
But my overall question is why I was not able to roam with the G2 overseas. Clearly the phone worked fine once I put a local SIM card in but the fact that I was totally unable to roam with the G2 using my US T-Mobile SIM card was very disappointing and has me thinking of reactivating my iPhone, which has never had any issue using it overseas, including Guatemala.
Is this a G2 issue or T-Mobile?
You have to enable international roaming with T-Mobile, I discovered that during a trip to Ukraine. Once I did that my subsequent trips I was able to roam but not very well. The easiest and cheapest thing to do was to use a foreign sim for my purposes.
You have to call tmobile and they will give you the unlock code most of the time. Tell then you are going for business or something like that.
Most likely your data and calling bands will work on edge. But your 3g and wannabe 4g will not work.

Woah, weird. I lived in ukraine for 3 years. And yes buying a ukrainian sim card will cost you about 5-10 dollars a month for a crap load of text messages. UMC is best for ukraine imo.
Completely off topic but how did you like living in Ukraine? I would love to live there for awhile. We adopted a little girl from there and then later another from Moscow, I loved Moscow but Russia was so much more expensive than Ukraine was.
Back on topic sort of. I didn't have a smart phone in Ukraine so I didnt use data, but in Moscow I was able to get 3G coverage with my G2. I had Tmobile international roaming enabled on my phone, but my sim would not register on any networks there, I had to pick up a Russian Beeline sim and then was good to go!
From what I understood about mhz bands and services. There are four total most used bands in the entire world 850 900 1800 and 1900. Us in america use two (one under a thousand and one over) and europe uses the opposite ones. So only up until tri and quad band phones started getting much cheaper (probably about 5 years ago) did phone start working in different countrys. Its only smarter honestly, then a company would only need to make on phone for the world. Then they would be losing out on multiple purchases ofc haha.
Google mobile mhz bands. I don't know everything, but I read quite a bit about this maybe 3 years ago when I bought a tri band nokia.
Ukraine, I was there for 2 years for my church. Became fluent in russian. Then went back to date a girl I met while I was there. After that she came twice for 6 month increments on a visitor visa and we got married at the end of the second. Been happily married for almost 2.5 years now.
Bring on the mail order bride jokes, I've heard them all. We r both young, planning on buying a house this year since the economy has really brought those prices down haha. Sorry for the spam! But hopefully your questions are answered.

Thanks for the responses. I will give T-Mobile a call ahead of my next trip overseas. Just odd that a company with such wide global coverage has no international data roaming plans and makes it a pain the keester to get roaming.
They actually do have international data roaming ($15/MB). The key is that you have to have already added international roaming to your account (it's free to add). Then if you have a data plan in the US, they will allow you to have data while roaming. I think US carriers require you to actively enable international roaming instead of enabling it by default due to the potentially high number of complaints about billing charges (e.g., people using their phones internationally without being aware there will be a higher rate). This way, they can state you were properly warned since you have to contact them first.

My Samsung Galaxy S2 3G Speeds Are Very Slow

I got really happy today when I discovered XDA developers through Google. There seems to be a wealth of information on this forum.
I recently purchased the Samsung Galaxy S2 in India and I have to say, the quality exceeded my expectations, seriously.
I also signed up for Airtel's 3G service, and the service was working fine for the first 2-3 days with speeds exceeding ~3mbps (>3000kbps).
However, here is where my problem started:
Just a couple of days back I was simultaneously downloading a bunch of free Apps from the Marketplace and somewhere in the middle my 3G speeds dropped. I seriously don't know what happened. I have the flexible package from Airtel which gives 1.25 gigabytes, and according to my phone, I've used only 550 megabytes at that time.
Now, my speeds are locked at 40kbps (according to Speedtest and web browsing experience) and I don't if it is my phone having the issue or if it is my SIM or Airtel Prepaid account (I am 99.9% percent I have not exceeded the balance or else talktime would have already been deducted by now), or a technical glitch on Airtel's server-end.
I have tried disabling / enabling fast dormancy, disabling / enabling HSPDA, configuring WCDMA Only, and manually configuring the Airtel settings. Yet, none of that worked.
I am feeling very frustrated and would appreciate any help in addressing this matter. Thanks in advance.
There are a couple of Indian specific threads that you'd be better off getting help in. This is the biggest one...

I would like to read feedback from folks around the world as well.
I've already gone through the mentioned Indian thread and I have to say, it requires a moderator.
Help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
same problem on t-mobile
i bought the sgs2 2 months ago , i live in the us now and i bought it unloked from amazon. i put my simcard from tmobile in it , previously was using a nexus one. i have unlimited data plan but only get edge speeds on it which is very frustrating. on the nexus i was getting 3g speeds. one time while i was driving (i live in florida) i managed to get a 3g signal but the speeds were still in the edge range. most of the time i`m using wifi, but since i`m paying for the data plan, id like for my phone to be able to use it.
if anybody would be able to enlighten me about how to go about my problem i would appreciated it.

You won't get 3g speeds on tmobile because sgs2 doesn't have the necessary tmobile 3g bands. If you want 3g and hspa+ speeds thru sgs2, switch to att.

Unfortunately for us (My SGS2 will arrive later today) T-mobile uses different 3G/4G bands than most other carriers worldwide.... so we are stuck with EDGE (2G)
On a side note how are the speeds when browsing on EDGE? Is it painfully slow? If so try downloading Opera mini it should help quite a bit since it renders everything server side
thanks
thanks for the prompt answers , after a little research i`ve found out exactelly the same thing, that i have to switch to at&t to get better speeds and i probably will.
yes , surfing on 2g is horribly slow and my 70$ unlimited plan is useless

HI, I am also facing the same problem of 3G of low speeds any updates regarding this?
Any chance your provider might be throttling your speeds based on usage behaviour?
Took mine to service center, having the same simptoms as described by you, the resolution was: faulty motherboard -> replace. Not a firmware issue...a hardware one.
