Is this a new task manager? - EVO 4G General

check out this screen shot from the new Desire HD. The notification bar looks like it might have a task manager built-in

Everything looks standard to me.
GPS acquiring signal icon, 3g/evdo/whatever icon, battery, time, calendar, missed calls.
Places, market, settings, possibly vpn off to the side.
Don't see any hint of any kind of task manager.

Ok, is it that hard to use the applications manager in froyo? Just put a widget on the home screen for it.
An iphone like task manager? Why not just buy the iphone? The evo is what it is and what it is not is an iphone.

watch the video on engadget, its not a task manager just a list of recently used apps. same list you will find by long pressing the home key

Dont mean to step on anyones toes but to me it looks like a recent apps list more then anything else.
Lets not forget that task managers arnt needed with android it performs its own app killing when needed. If you read up on how andriod works you will see its better when its left to do its job. So unless the HTC crew has surcumed to idioucy then I highly doubt they plan to include a task manager.

Wasn't going off. If it came off as such then I apologize. It's hard to make calm statements on a forum since the written word can be interpreted in many ways from it's intention. Take from it what you will.
Anyways, it gets old hearing about people wanting "iphone this" and "iphone that" on their evos. Their must have been something you liked about the evo to buy it so why change it into something it's not is all I was trying to get at.
The previous posts described it better than I did though, it looks like a recently used apps list.

nevermind.

Tension in the thread.

No, everything doesn't look standard in that screenshot. It has the recently used apps list (aka task manager) built into the notification pull down. Just another way of accessing it, rather than having to long press the home button.
Nice feature/addition to the new Sense imo.

The term task manager is being thrown around but not being used properly.
You can't call it a task manager if it's a list of recently used apps. A task manager manages active tasks, it doesn't list recently/previously used tasks/apps.
Take windows for example, when you pull up the built-in task manager (ctrl+alt+delete) do you see a list of recently used apps/tasks in there? Nope, you see active tasks and processes.
Again, I don't see any hint of a task manager and everything looks standard.

Fine, it's not a task manager. It's a recently used (possibly still running) list of apps. However, that is not "standard" for Sense to have a recently used apps list in the notification pull down area seeing as how it is a new feature. It may become (a) standard among Sense, but it isn't yet.
If it was standard, I could go to any cellphone store and look at any/all of the HTC phones running Sense, pull down the notification bar and see list of recently used/running apps. Not gonna happen....

Someone is a little pissy. Anyway, it does look like a recent app's list - I would like this more than holding down the home button
Edit: I guess it's been confirmed it's the recent app's list

I meant standard as in everything that was there that already exists in sense.
Again I was looking for a task manager not a recently used apps list. The list I can't deny is not standard. But if people really wanted it I'm pretty sure it would be available ota as part of a new update.
What I'm more interested in is the resource impact this "new" sense version will have.

Apps open by themselves

Hey all,
I've had my (Sprint) Hero for a couple weeks now and enjoying being able to mess around with different roms and tweaks but I've noticed something annoying. I've been using task killers more heavily in the past week or two now and it appears that apps will sometimes open up by themselves.
I had originally not noticed it because I've been playing with the phone so much I generally had the apps open a lot from messing around and showing people different things. Lately I've got into the habit of killing tasks. I'll go to pick up my phone and notice my RAM usage is rather high and I find apps running that I haven't opened.
Most commonly I see:
Google Shopper
Sprint Navigation (Decided to just delete it)
Market
Clock (the alarm app appears when I switch to it)
Weather
com.google.vrec (can't remember name... also deleted)
So ... I was wondering if anyone could tell me why these would be opening by themselves.
Thanks

Poorboy you do make me laff!
regarding the apps, i might be wrong but are the apps opening on your home screen?? I noticed that if i closed all apps with a task manager app then when i scrolled through the home screen the apps i have on there seem to take up mem again, (like a weather app attached to the clock) aswell as other apps that are designed to be running all the time like wallswitcher, things like foot prints seems to be running if i have used the camra...
maybe im wrong.. but this is what i noticed.
get autostarts from market, it will show you on what event which app will be started. also gives the power to disable automatic app starts.

+1 Very cool app. Thank you for recommending it.
Found a bunch of the apps wanting to start after a connectivity change. I believe that wifi and mobile network connections turn themselves off after being inactive for awhile and start up again after the phone is brought out of sleep or at least do it periodically which explains what's going on.
Apps are always opening by themselves, often I don't even look at the task manager I'll just use one of the "kill all apps" widgets and it'll tell me that it killed 3 or 4 apps, none of which were apps I opened myself.

Closing open applications

Is there any special way to close an application that you are in, or does tapping the home button close it? I want to make sure that I am not using up processor with crap I'm not even using at the time.
To close apps you would need to download a task manager from Market. The way Android is meant to behave is that it leaves apps open until another apps needs it's memory and then it automatically closes other background apps.
I downloaded Advanced Task Killer. Any pros or cons to this app or is there one better?

That's what I use and it works well for me. As you can choose which apps to leave open and which ones to kill. And it remembers so you don't have to select everytime.
Is there a better one? Maybe, but that one works well, is simple, quick, and easy to use.

I'll double confirm that YOU DO NOT NEED a task manager (unless u need to kill a crashing app if u dont wanna reboot)..
That's how Android is, "background running" apps do not affect phone's performance, cuz they're not really "running" in the background.
Some apps (like Dolphin HD browser) have EXIT/CLOSE button when u press menu
Also hitting back instead of home will usually "close" the app

Update: After actually reading the article and a related one linked at the bottom
http://androinica.com/2010/05/07/go...-imply-task-killermanager-apps-are-pointless/
The Android Market has dozens, possibly hundreds, of task killer apps all vying for attention. I’m sure some people may argue that there’s some short-term value to these apps; however, it appears that task killers are not necessary and in some cases do more harm than good. An additional 20 minutes of use or short bursts of freed RAM can be great, but users shouldn’t compromise experience and overall health of their device for that extra time.
Let me be clear in stating that apps like Advance Task Manager or TaskOS have great virtues like batch uninstall and app switching that many people can still benefit from using. With that said, it seems that constantly killing tasks, apps, and processes is not in the best interest of your phone. Android already has the natural ability to do this effectively, so let the phone do its job.

I don't feel like writing out the full reason for why not to use a task killer.
Luckily for me, this link explains it nicely.
http://geekfor.me/faq/you-shouldnt-be-using-a-task-killer-with-android/
Once you give it a read, you can google around and you will find other sources which give you the same info in a bit more detail.
As for the widget problem? I have yet to experience it unless I am changing a setting on ADW (pretty much any changed setting under ADW settings will result in my widgets reloading). However, I never experience it other than that. I imagine the task killer is your problem.
Good luck!
Again, it is an opinion, but without ATK, I would not be able to fully use ADW. You can explain the logic about why one should or should not use a task killer. My own personal experience shows that my battery and phone performs better with the free version of ATK.
[Note: the link to the geekfor.me as posted by ^^ says that Android automatically kills tasks when more memory is needed. NOT true with the X10. That is why the phone re-starts from time to time. SE's own support site list this as an issue. Once I have started using ATK, my phone does not re-starts by itself anymore].

"Android is hard coded to automatically kill a task when it’s done doing what it needs to do."
So why then does it leave tasks running when you close them, for example, if I use Meridian then close it, the app will still show in the ATK list, and remains there until I shut it down. When you boot the phone, it loads a few apps, that would remain there unless I use ATK. The first reply to the article sums up the experience of a lot of users.

Mine has never re-started itself without task killer.
I use Advanced Task Manager since I started using X10 with ADW Launcher. It was all fine at the begining. Then I reinstalled software and restored aplications (without settings) and started experience the same problem as OP. So I have changed some settings in ADW, especially paying attention to System Preferences and UI settings. I don't know excatly what I have changed but I do NOT experience any problems with ADW "restarting" after that. So in my opinion this problem is down to setting ADW properly, only.
My ADW was experiencing that as well and I enabled ADW Settings > System Preferences > System persistent
This seemed to fix it for me.
ATK and similar apps are a personal choice, I used ATK until late June but since uninstalled the phone had run smoother. But then, it's rooted and overclocked...
ADW is probably the best home, openhome and panda have issues and xxx too crashes too often

Droidwall

Pretty good application. I like it a lot. There is only one feature I wish it had, and maybe you guys can tell me if there is something similar out there to DW that would have this one additional feature.
With Windows 7, if you try to use a network program that you haven't used before, a pop-up will appear asking you if you trust it and want to allow it to communicate with the Internet. It would be nice if DW had this, whereas it would pop up when there was network communication from an app for the first time, asking you if it should allow the communication. That way you can adjust your settings for that app right in the pop-up... PLUS, it would be instant notification if something new that you didn't want communicating with the network, was trying to do so.
Just like Zone Alarm firewall on windows does. The problem I see with droidwall working like that is it would have to run in the background. Droidwall does not AFAIK

Smart screen

So if anybody else like me is coming from the G2 and 3 you might be missing smart screen.. That little feature that detects your face while looking at the screen to keep the screen awake instead of fading out. I personally felt it a real convenience. I would like to get it back, I pulled the app from my G3 titled wise screen. I installed it like a normal app with success. I used activity launcher to try and launch it, but it fc's. So I'm guessing we'll need root to get it functional. When we do get root is there anyone else interested in joining me on this quest? I would really like to get this one up and running. I can't for the life of me understand why they left it off. I feel like I'm back on ics or jb with out it..

I have to agree with you. I am so surprised they took it out. I spent 30 min on the phone trying to find it. I tried the app the other post recommended, not as good, it will never turn the phone off in the car when the phone is mounted and the car is moving.
I, too, was looking for the smartscreen settings. Was surprised that LG decided to remove it. Will try the above mentioned kinscreen later
Anyone know if Samsung removed it from the S6? They started the feature and it was one of the more useful features they added to Touchwiz. I was glad when LG copied it. Most of the other stuff was junk, but that was actually useful.
That sucks. I wonder if they removed smart screen to keep the screen from running down the battery.

On Verizon, you can see the service - it is not an app - BUT there are no Settings I can find or know of that actually allow you to activate it or interact with it in anyway. So it is "there" but seems to do nothing and cannot be setup.
EDIT: I used the hidden Verizon menu and found this "smart screen" but when you click on it, it forecloses and crashes. So, it is as if that first part of the services is there BUT the actual functionality is not as using the hidden Verizon menu I cannot activate it and access settings or turn it on to work - and I would think from that hidden menu, we should.
