[Q] Unknown device - help needed - myTouch 3G, Magic General

Hello
If someone can help me identify my phone?
Fastboot says:
SAPPHIRE UNKNOWN 32B SHIP S-ON G
HBOOT-1.33.0007 (SAPP 10000)
CPLD-10
RADIO-2.22.23.02
In the configuration, memory and SD-Card gives: Internal memory - 273 MB available (!)
So, it is 32 B, 32 A, or some hybrid?!
Cover has Vodafone logo.
What ROM and recovery will be the best?
At this moment I use Cyanogen 6.0.0.-DS (Ion / myTouch)
Does someone have any idea?…

that is indeed very interesting.... O_O

Doesn't 32A and B both have the same internal storage? I believe yours is 32B but correct me if I'm mistaken.

32 A has different CPU and more RAM (285 MB or something) - 32 B has only 192 MB...

Internal memory = storage space, NOT RAM. You've got a 32B with a confused SPL.

I agree :0)
Both the radio version and the fastboot info indicates that it's pure 32B device.
Maybe flash a eng spl and see if the "unknown" problem goes away.

help request: SPL or recovery?

Sry for the idiotic questions but i am new onto this scene and have little information on what is going on. If someone could please help with my situation it would be greatly appreciated!
I am currently confused on which one to do first.
all tutorials i have seen have said that i need a recovery to flash an engineering spl, and all recovery's need an engineering spl.
I have taken all the steps necessary on the tutorials but all have been rejected. I can never get past the first step of booting it onto my phone.
Which one do i flash to my phone first and how do i do it?
I have downloaded the amonRA recovery-RAv1.2.1G.img but am unable to fastboot boot recovery-RAv1.2.1G.img.
(only cmd that i have entered)
Where do i save the recovery file and what cmd steps am I taking wrong?
Also I have downloaded the Engineering SPL 1.33.2004 and have the zipped folder on my desktop.
tutorial says to send to the root of my SD card.
Were is the root and yet again wht cmd do i need to use to flash this over?
And how do make my phone rooted??

Okay...
I know its a lot to take in at first.
My suggestion is to slow down a bit and tackle one thing at a time.
1. The root of your sd card is what pops up on your pc when you select mount on your mytouch after its attached via usb.
Follow this tutorial http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/22/how-to-root-the-mytouch-3g-or-g1-in-one-click/
The files go on a freshly formatted fat32 sd card and in no folders.
For now I wouldn't worry about doing anything with your SPL or radio until this is done with success.
Good luck
Thank you very much for the advice
Ok so that went very smoothly onto my phone.
Now my question is do I have to partition just fat 32 or both fat 32+ext32+swap to get a ROM?
And do i need to flash an engineering SPL before getting a new ROM?
I also see that in the recovery it says format sd fat 32 and format sd fat32+ext2+swap.
Does this relate to the partitioning at all?
Same question for the choice of convert ext2 to ext3?

I see no need to flash SPL or radio if the trick on unlockr allowed you to successfully flash a new ROM. The ROMs here already incorporate super user access. You should NOT flash your SPL unless you have a very good reawson to do it.
As for your partitioning question:
fat32 is standard for removable USB devices and SD cards. EXt2 is default old school linux. EXt2 partition is needed for apps2SD which installs apps on the SD card instead of memory. The swap partition is like windows page file. The Hero based ROMs can use it.
If you have a 32a magic, the general consensus is don't bother, you have enough memory for everything. For 32b magic, I'll let someone else field the question.
do i need to format fat32 to install a Cyanogen ROM?
and on the unlockr video it says to do the wipe in the recovery process before installing the ROM.
DO i need to do that as well?

MAGIC 32A or 32B?

Hi
I am a little bit confused about the following WIKI Entry:
* PVT32A handsets have 288MB total RAM (192MB usable by OS - same as Hero handsets) and use the Qualcomm MSM7200A CPU.
* PVT32B handsets have 192MB total RAM (96MB usable by OS) and use the Qualcomm MSM7201A CPU.
My Swisscom Magic displays PVT32B on fastbootscreen, but it has 239MB Memory available.
Is that an already updated version or do I have an exotic version?
Strange thing is, that if I try to update to cyanogen following the Full Update Guide, I can't downgrade to 1.5 because of "invalid version.."
Any Idea about this?
32B has 192 MB RAM and 512 MB ROM. If you refer to what's displayed under "SD Card and Memory", then what you see there is your internal storage's (=ROM) free space, not your free memory(RAM).

32B, or not?

hey. confusion is really hitting the spot after i rooted my mytouch. looking through cyanogens site, i learned that the 32B has 192 MB internal ram. i went on fastboot and i have the PVT 32B, but under my settings, it says 288 MB! how can this be??

Are you sure the 288 is ram? I'm pretty sure that's how much space you have no your phone
yeah. when i go to phone storage under settings, it says my internal space is 286 MB. my fastboot says i have a 32B
Just for comparison sake, I have the new MyTouch 3g 1.2 in black and it reads this on fastboot .....

system memory under settings reads 295 MB
Yeah based on your results, you have 290 mb with a 32A. I have that same size but on a 32B
The internal phone storage is the ROM, not the RAM. Actually it shows the free space on the data partition and on the myTouch 3G its size is 302848K (~296mb). Both 32A/B have 512mb ROM.
No reason to be confused here
i dont get it...
Think of it this way;
When you go to your settings and you view the information there, the 288mb is not RAM,its flash drive space used to store information and applications, like a computer hard drive. This has nothing to do with 32a or 32b. RAM is different than storage, you would need a third party app to view phone RAM.
A lot of people make this mistake.

Looks like maybe your SD card is formatted with the wrong file system type. Double check that your SD card is formatted in FAT32.
This should have been posted in General as that's the question and answer forum. This is for new ROMS/radios/etc.
sd card is formtted to FAT32.
about kernel version, isn't the problem?

why do i have only 90MB system ram after installing CyanogenMod 6.1?

Hi
i have just installed CyanogenMod 6.1 on my mt3g (without headphone jack)
and i have only 90MB of system memory - isn't that model suppose to be 192MB ram?
my system:

CyanogenMod 6.1

Thanks
yes... but the OS takes some of it..
but i have only 22MB ram available after reboot - very low
i read at somewhere else this could be a Radio issue?
which spl do you have?
Your radio is fine...

You might have silent apps installed killing your memory?
some ram is used for FS's that exist in ram so that they can be temporarily writeable and faster access. Caches and such as well.
But i think the missing "ram" is taken up by the protected parts of the OS. roughly the same is missing from the A and B models, leaving 200MB or so for A models and 90ish for the B models for userspace.
