Vibrant trading? - Vibrant General

I switched from a g1 a little less than a month ago cause I was eligible for upgrades. just curious how and what is thee best way to go about switching from my vibrant to a g2 when it comes out without having to spend hundreds of dollars that I don't have to spend like that. Thanks

best way is to sell it unlocked ;P
or post in marketplace, when the G2 comes out, and see if someone wants to trade.

You can create a time machine to go back before you purchased the vibrant & stop yourself from buying it by throwing something at yourself... Make sure you don't see you though, cause if you do, were all [email protected]©ked!
... Or you can try and complain to tmo to take the phone back and credit it to your account for your future purchase of the G2. I've never done this, but have seen one person get away with it (not vibrant to G2). Selling works too... Ie: craigslist, ebay, street corner, outside your local tmo store/dealer. Shoot, maybe get someone at the store to swap with you on the day of release???

Wait until the g2 is released. If it's awesome and is getting all sorts of crazy updates, sell the vibrant and pay the rest out of pocket (which shouldn't be a whole lot more).
G1's are still selling without much trouble, I don't think a vibrant will have much trouble selling.

Keeping my G1 as a backup-phone and a (very large, very heavy) mp3 player.

what he said...tell them u hate the vibrant and that u have too many problems with it like, gps issue, slow opening apps, stuff like that, then u give them back the vibrant and they reverse ur upgrade (as long as u've had ur vibrant less than 30 days)..if not...ur screwed and will have to sell ur vibrant unlocked on ebay/craigslist and use the money to buy a g2

G1 stilll worth getting?

I'm considering jumping to T-Mobile here in a few days, as my Sprint contract is ending. A friend of mine is selling his G1 for pretty cheap in good condition. That combined with the Even More Plus plans sounds like a better deal than being stuck in a contract again for 2 years.
I know the phone is crazy old, but it still seems to have great support for roms and such. I have no problems with rooting and flashing at all.
Also, for the people who are with T-Mobile right now, if I start a Even More Plus plan right now, would I be able to "upgrade" to contracted phone down the road, which would prompt me to the more expensive plan, should I ever get a real itch for a Vibrant or things coming out later this year.
I just got mine today lol i love it
My other phone is a tilt 2 tho
Really no point. On CL in my city g1s are 60 used 120ish new. It still has awsome support but remember, its close to 2 years old.... With technology going at the pace its at, think of it like comparing a 2010 mustang against a very well maintained 1985 mustang. Its definately a usable phone and will make you pleased, but won't compare with the advancements in speed, fuel economy, safety, etc...
If you asked this question 7-8 months ago, I would have totally recomended it. Now, not so much.
P.S. download the APN on/off widget or APNdroid to turn off data, so you can qualify for cheaper talk/text only plans. Data is roughly $20-30 more expensive, plus your phone will be functional under wifi. Plus battery lasts longer

i would say the same as mej,
but totally.. now.. its not much worth. I would totally go for a nexus one if i had to buy a new phone
T-Mobile don't even sell G1s anymore, do they?
Anyways, if you're getting a contract, don't buy an old phone! Get a myTouch slide or wait for the Sidekick Twist.
I would just get the Vibrant right now, because I think if you come into your contract with a used G1 you can't get a new phone till you're up for an upgrade. Besides, the Vibrant(along with most of the other Galaxy S lineup) is top of the line right now. They are benchmarking higher video framerates than a EVO 4G. Plus it has 720p HD video recording, and HD video out so you can play back what you recorded on a hdtv. Also has a accelerometer and gyroscope, giving it a 6-axis g-sensor for epic gaming. Oh yeah, and it's the baddest phone T-Mo has right now, period.
I purchases my G1 2 months ago, best buy ever (paid 100 uk pound, around 130euro then, with 8GB microsd, ...).
Still no phone with a tilt keyboard yet (had a tilt, htc kaiser, much better then htc pro, but the G1 has a nicer touch screen (the tilt was also running android 2.1).
If your stuck on Tmobile, don't want to spend too much, and want a new phone before your contract ends, then go for it
Nowadays with a new contract you can get some pretty good phones for really cheap prices
I've had my G1 since I received it after preordering it. It's an EXCELLENT phone. However, it's age is showing. There are some things it simply cannot do and many things it cannot do well.
If you're going the as-cheap-as-I-can route in the short-term, a G1 may do the trick (And, if it were January of 2009, I'd say get the G1.). But, as it's been said before, if you're going to be locked into a 2 year contract, you'll really want to get hardware with enough power to last you those two years and not leave you wanting more.
Personally, if I were buying right now, it would either be a NexusOne or a Vibrant. Something with enough processing power and RAM for Android 2.2+
Good luck!
I got my G1 this past January... and while I don't regret it, there's no chance I'd buy this phone now. Every day I wish this thing had a Snapdragon in it. If you're really worried about contracts go with an unlocked phone for more money upfront - at least with T-Mobile, the plan will be cheaper, so it'll even out.
Again, the G1 is a great phone and I love the design/form factor, but for this day and age it's just not fast enough.
I don't believe you'll be able to take an Even More Plus plan and then go to an Even More plan right off the back, at least not with your same number...but, If you sign up for google Voice at the same time as getting the g1, give out that number to everyone as your new number, when you upgrade your to a contract(if you do), that GV number will still be the same and you'll just have to change the number under your GV settings.
Would I buy a G1 right now? If it was 0-50, maybe 75 with an 8 gig sd card. We've got 2.2 running on our phones now as a daily driver. it makes/receives calls, what more you need from a phone?

I do have one question... why not stay with Sprint? Their plans are competitively priced with T-Mobile, and they have excellent Android devices. The Epic 4G is due out soon, which should be an amazing phone by anyone's standards. And it will have a hardware keyboard, like the G1...
If price is the most important, don't go with T-Mobile. Get an unlocked T-Mobile phone and take it over to Simple Mobile at mysimplemobile.com. They use the same 3G bands as T-Mobile but you get unlimited talk, text, and internet for a flat $60/month.

Well I Just bought one to hold me off until the "Project Emerald" phone comes out. It's better than using a non android phone. I think that using it as a temporary phone it will do the job.
Still an awsome phone but :] mTS 2 for 1 lol
If you don't care about having a fast phone, go for it. I just went from g1 to vibrant, and the vibrant is everything I wanted the g1 to be. The g1 is gonna give you a taste of what android can do, so you may end up wanting something better.

Anyone preordering a G2 tomorrow?

Looks like preorder for the G2 will start tomorrow and the phones will be for sale at stores October 6th. Anyone preordering or getting a G2? I am a bit undecided, i am thinking about possibly picking one up and playing with one alongside my vibrant and seeing which one I like more and selling/returning the other. I love the screen on the samsung but no led notifaction and the plasticy build quality are bummers, not to mention not much support from samsung. If you are getting one or not getting one, why or why not? Just curious, the samsung is my first android phone so I have no previous experience besides playing with my brothers G1 back in the day.
No thanks. I am so over slide-out keyboards now that I have been introduced to Swype...
fF
nope, more than happy with my Vibrant. slide out keyboards are old (imo) I had a slide out keyboard back in 2005...and it makes the phone too bulky (imo)
but i am Excited to see how the g2 performs.
why would i downgrade my phone?
I'm surprised nobody said "Vibrant gave me so much problems (because of my ignorance) so I'm preordering the G2 also!"
I'm not going to get it. Although it is a beastly phone from the specs that I've read, but I don't need a qwerty keyboard phone, unless it's slim like Samsung has done with the Epic. Also, I wander how the battery life is going to be.
Can't afford to have both, but I am surprised to see that there are so many with that much disposable income.
As I've been telling my customers... Don't fall for the hype. Stick with the Vibrant.

i havent had a keyboard since a Nokia E71, not sure i really need it, thats why i figure i can take advantage of the remorse period and see if I like it/use it...i bought my vibrant from costco so im still within the return policy (90 days)
Not even that intereated in it. So its a beefed up htc Dream, fabulous if you need a slider with good specs, but I'm fine with my vibrant. I'm just as fast if not faster with swype then I was on the only decent qwerty phones ever back in my blackberry days.

you'd have to be an idiot to preorder the damn phone considering how 99% of the vibrant owners on here got ****ed by tmobile.
want the phone on launch day? that'll be $249.99 + $18 upgrade fee + tax, minus $50 MIR 2 months later. so a solid $240 for us here in dallas.
then i get online and after a couple weeks see that everyone else was able to get the phone from costco, walmart, wirefly, amazon, etc for around $100 with no dumb ass MIR or upgrade fee.
oh, but i cant take my phone back and go buy it at costco or walmart because i've used my "upgrade" and the only place that can do an "override" to get my 2yr renewal pricing is a tmobile store.

Like what someone said, why downgrade?
Plasticy build? I bet if they made the back cover metal it'd change your perspective. The glass and trim is excellent built quality. Sure the back cover is plastic, but that was the whole point for it being light weight. For those who have covers like me, I don't care if the back cover is plastic.
The G2 is all hype. It seems like big news because Tmo is actually advertising it like crazy, unlike the Vibrant that got little press. Either way....why downgrade?
the vibrant didnt get much press but the entire galaxy line is getting advertised out the ass. everyone i know that used to be a staunch iphone supporter is like "whoa whoa whoa now.. wtf is this galaxy s phone? have you heard about it? i wanna get one, i saw it on tv, it looks awesome!"
I see no need to update, personally I believe the Vibrant is 10x better looking then the G2, I like the fact that it's lightweight and not much out there can beat this AMOLED screen. I've went from a 1st gen iPhone to the G1, and now to the Vibrant, the G2 is not in my feature.
yeah i got my vibrant from costco, $250 with no contract I just really like installing different roms and such and am wondering if this phone wont take the vibrant spotlight being an htc and also having vanilla android on it

G2 is a downgrade from vibrant imo. the specs are not even at par with the vibrant. The only thing it got going for the G2 is that it will be released with Froyo. Once vibrant gets froyo either ota or from a Dev, it will run faster than it is now. I read somewhere that 2.1 is not using all the available ram since it only sees 384 ram and Froyo will be able to see all 512.
My vibrant is too awesome. Plus im really picky on how keyboards feel. I didn't like the droid, the epic 4g....actually, i only liked the one on my blackberry. Plus, there fewer physical weaknesses in the vibrants body in comparison to the G2.
Come on {OP} wtf is the point of you even posting this in the Vibrant forums, go post this somewhere else plz! stop trying to cause drama.
The only reason to make a switch to the G2 would be because it's fully compatible with HSPA+ or you just need a physical keyboard. Once froyo is running on both phones it'll be clear the Vibrant is the winner.

I don't know why anyone would buy a phone at release unless it's just to play with a second toy. If you plan to use it as your primary phone, I would suggest waiting a few weeks to see what kinds of bugs or glitches pop up.

Limit on returning Sprint phones?

I'm considering purchasing the Epic Touch 4G from a nearby Sprint corporate store in order to be able to try the phone out for 14 days. The logic behind this is that my upgrade period starts in a few weeks, and it is my understanding that customers are limited to one return of a device purchased as an upgrade. In order to avoid losing my one return via the upgrade, I'd rather use the time before to try out the ET4G. There are three devices I'm interested in - ET4G, iPhone5 and Nexus Prime - and the return limit means I can't try them all out.
What I'm wondering, though, will my return of the phone purchased tomorrow prevent me from potentially returning a different phone purchased as an upgrade?

So you want to purchase a phone at full price to try it out before returning it to use an upgrade to get a second phone, and then returning that second phone on the upgrade to get a third?

that's certainly possible. a lot depends on how much I like the ET4G - I could decide I like it enough that once my upgrade kicks in, I'll just get that one and stick with it. but I'd like to know that I could try out multiple phones if I wanted to.
You could probably do that, but you would be royally ****ing the numbers of that store, especially the salesperson who sold the first one, which isn't fair to them. 2 returns means they would have to sell about two dozen phones without any more returns to get back to even on their goals. I would suggest buying the et4g used and trying it that way. Or you could buy it from telesales or sprint.com and return it in store. Just keep in mind the restocking fee. The only way around it is to return to your original device on or before the third day of use, which includes the day you buy it.

ah ok, fair enough. I don't have a problem with paying the restocking fee, but I don't want to screw over the in-store salesperson. It's no both to me to order via telesales, so if you think that's the soundest approach, I'll just do that. Being able to return it to a corporate store at least means I can maximize the number of days I'll be able to test it out.

My math might be off because im not really trying to be exact, but if an rc wants to maintain a return exchange rate of less than 8% they can have one return or exchange for every 12 handsets sold. If they do 2 exchanges for a customer, it only gets worse. We had a lady swap 5 times over the summer and just murder one guy's numbers. Depends on how busy the store is ultimately. If the rep normally sells lots of handsets it wont matter too much. But a return from telesales or dotcom doesnt affect an individual salesperson. Hence why i suggested it. Just trying to remind everyone that reps are people too. You wouldnt want your boss to ride you all month because you exchanged 2 handsets for a guy I'm sure. That said, if your rep is a moron or a ****, who cares? Sprint would b better off without them anyway.

Sorry my response took so long. I forgot about this thread.
We do not have goals for return percentages at our stores, just for the net new activations and upgrades at the end of the month. Obviously we want to get people into the right phone the first time, but there are so many people that want to try different phones before deciding that it really isn't fair to punish the salesperson when the customer is the one causing us a problem. We do have a limit of 1 customer satisfaction swap per activation/upgrade that helps us limit frivolous swaps.
Of course, our stores are not corporate stores, but we are a platinum level preferred sprint dealer.
Why not wait for all phones to come out & test them at the store then pick the one you like play with at home & if you don't like it bring it back for one you want you got 14days to return it!

I was wondering why they hate me at the Sprint store. I was eligible so I went in and got a Epic Touch. I HATED how it felt in my hand. If I'm holding something larger than my hand then it better have a nipple on it. Anyway, I figured I could get used to it but the LOS killed my love of this beautiful device. I returned it for a Photon. About the same size as the Epic. A little lighter and bigger screen. Great radio and battery but the core apps (Email/Contacts/Calendar) all suck IMO. Returned that too. Salesrep barely talked to me. Now I know why.
I really wish they had a phone lounge where their longtime customers could sit down with a real phone with service and not tethered just so we can take it thru its paces.
FYI: I am back on my Epic. Poor radio, short battery but great phone.
(With Swype I never use the keyboard though)
Why not just spend the extra time researching on XDA, then go to a Sprint store to play with it for a few hours to see whether you will like it or not. IMHO spending the time to set up your phone, activation etc etc, driving to the store aren't worth the hassle if you are already considering returning it.

30 minutes to have a phone at home for 2 weeks vs. spending "a few hours" in a Sprint store? I think I'll take the former.
anyway, it's pretty safe to say the iPhone is off this list since it's completely pointless. I like the ET4G a lot but the bottom line is that Sprint can't deliver service on a level that would really support these devices let alone justify the expense of a new phone. I think I'll just stick with my Epic.
my advice is to go to nebraska furniture mart they discount the rebate at the register and you wind up paying alot less

Switching to BigRed from T-mobile, cant decide on phone

Hi guys!
Well just as the title says, im going ot be switching from T-mobile to Verizon, but i am torn between two phones. Either the Rezound or the Galaxy Nexus. I know there has been other threads on this im sure, but i had to post and ask just to get other feedback. All the other threads i have seen just go back and forth "get the rezound because of XYZ, get the GNex because of XYZ" So im a bit torn lol
Any feedback is much appreciated!

Buy a used phone on Amazon
Even though the new smartphones phones are cool, most have limited memory and poor audio quality. Another option is to just buy a Samsung Vibrant on Amazon. You can get one used for about $150 and you won't have any contract committments. Its a great phone and you can upgrade the ROM to ICS on the Vibrant forum.

i had a Vibrant, i liked it, but i would rather put the $150 to a newer faster phone. The samsung is for T-mobile, i am moving to Verizon through work and they are paying for the phone so no point in me dishing out money. Besides, t-mobile has been terrible the last 4 months. tons of dropped calls, phone wont ring when its right next to me....my current phone is a mytouch 4G, and its been replaced 4 times......then they offered me a crap Sidekick which even gets terrible reviews on their website. Then to top it off, I have overages because i used so many darn minutes to call people back everytime my call dropped, they wont even credit me for that. So basically they are giving me the FU, so im going to do the same Any who, i hope the GNex is a great phone, if not i may go with the rezound....i was hoping to wait till the Quad-core phones came out but unfortunately work needs me to get a phone so i need to settle with a dual core

alternatives to beating a dead horse

I am opening this thread in hopes it will keep other threads cleaner. Motorola did not update to ICS. we know that.
One suggestion I have is JUMP ship. get a different device. You can get a pantech bust for about $100 on ebay with official ICS. I got a galaxy note for $150 myself. The atrix still goes for around $100.
I still have my atrix as a backup phone.
suggestion 2 keep going the rout of requesting cooperation from moto/punit etc. Yes you may feel it is falling on deaf ears and you may be correct.
My main suggestion and point of this thread is please stop posting about this in every atrix thread on XDA. THese threads are to help the atrix community and people must now search harder to find what they are looking for because they must wade through post after post of motohate then post after post of bickering at other members.
please keep our threads clean
if you have any suggestions of what can be done or good deals on alternative phones post them here

About jumping ship. I do realize that my suggestion does not help those with all the docks and accessories as much. I do not know what the docks sell for. And I can't speak of the quality of the burst. I do know it requires a smaller sim card. I was just suggesting it as a means to swap for a device with similar specs that is on official ICS with no major cost in the end. I am pleased with the quality of my note but I realize that I got it almost $100 less than average used price
I cant buy another phone...I dont have the money and I have a contract with an operator...and the note in my country cost a lot much than my atrix...so any other sugestion???

I am in US and realize I got a great deal on note. And Also realize that even buying burst even though it has little cost in end has upfront cost of nearly 100 US. I am on straightalk att sim. I am still burnt by moto. I have a nonupgradeable device that is still under manufacture warranty so I don't want to get rid of it yet. hopefully more people will have suggestions as well
I sold my Atrix for a good price ($200) without the lapdock.
then again, I sold it to someone who asks me everyday about how to do stuff, so I consider the extra price as a bonus for all the things I've helped him with.
I got a Note and never looked back. Never again, Motorola. Never.
Still, I'm stuck with an Atrix because my boss has it and he always wants a different ROM. It's a good phone. Such a shame Motorola was backing it.
Well...in my country (argentina) a new atrix on a contract cost 1800 pesos argentinos and a Note on a contract cost 3500 pesos argentinos...so if I want to buy it w/o a contract the note cost 5000 pesos argentinos.
So Im f***...thats why I still pushing moto or punit to release the source code...

AT&T has their own trade in program and currently they value my device at $36. Obviously that's a bit on the low side, but the reality is that something is only worth what you can sell it for, whether that's $10 or $100, and ebay is loaded with them, especially after the ICS cancellation.
That said, I'm stuck in a contract with mine for the next few months with no way out and no money to jump ship. Once opportunity does present itself, I will have to see what's available at the time, but tbh, this was my first true smart phone, yet I'm still feeling stupid for getting it.
Get a phone used that is older than the 4g and has been upgraded to ICS.
My thoughts are you have always been able to upgrade your PC, laptop and other computers at will. Why are phones and tablets any different?
I think the answer is simple: greed. There have always and only ever been excuses that all point to controlling consumer options and taking away freedoms in order to accomplish a bottom line.
For that, I do not believe buying another device will matter. We always end up supporting someone's idea of controlling my content. Screw that. I bought the device, I should be allowed to install what I want. Not what ATT or Motorola or Apple or even Google wants but what I want.
OK, done ranting.

I do not know how it is in the rest of the world but in the US craigslist is a good source for used phones. as with anything though there are also scammers out there. It was sad to see atrix price drop after ics cancelation. I think they went for almost 200 before to 150 after and now about 150. I got my wife a nexus 7 recently. I know it will stay updated but felt a bit bad purchasing from Motorola parent company Google.
My Atrix is just the latest in a long line of attempts to get a good deal for cheap that partially failed. Got my Atrix just before the announced cancellation of the update. Only good thing is I'm not stuck with a contract. I would have made another phone choice, if I'd jknow was being lied to my Moto.
For me its not so much about them failing on the upgrade. Its more about moto actively trying to keep us from getting ICS or any other rom on our own. Locking bootloaders on updates and ordering cease and desist on the leaked kernel. Its a big FU right in all of our faces. I just can't believe a company would actively do this to their customers, not even their regular customers... the enthusiast. makes no sense to me, before the atrix moto is the only phone company I would have. Now its the only one I refuse to buy.

On top of money and carrier contracts we may be stuck in, there's also the issue of carrier compatibility. For those of us with AT&T, I'm sure there are devices they don't offer that will work, and some may even have full capabilities, but when it comes to their current offerings, it's pretty slim pickings, regardless of what OS you want.
my brother asked me today if he could use a s3 from sprint on att. I said sadly no. would be nice since sprint phones always seem to go for less money. probably because they have a worse network. I told him to buy it anyway because they wanted 150 for it and I know it is worth more even if the esn is bad. I have been watching for a good used dual core that is updated for my wife. I am not in a hurry because I want a deal. she has atrix as well for now. been looking at lg nitro and s2 s3 onex. probably some others
I picked up a pantech burst for my wife yesterday for 65$. waiting for simcard cutter. dual core and ICS. plus I can still sell atrix for more than that
Haven't been on XDA for a while. What am I missing? There's plenty of stable Jellybean ROMs around.
Fingerprints a gimmick and you can get a camera app. How good do you want your phone camera to be anyway?
Not being inflammatory but get a ROM and enjoy it until your phone dies a natural death.
In fact mine died and I brought a new one for cheap, that's how happy I am with Th3bills Liquid Smooth.

I've got a new phone. i717 note on cm10. a pantech burst on official ics. and will soon be playing with a HTC desire that will have fully functional jellybean. I like playing with these old phones then selling them for more than I paid. and my atrix got replaced under warranty and there is no way as of now to unlock the bootloader.
Even when/if a new kernal is built my atrix is locked. Mine will most likely be sold soon but I want to try the soak test first. Might keep it for a while though as it is under warranty
if there’s a time machine,i would choose Nexus S rather other than Atrix 4g. The crude reality slapped my face, how foolish i was.
