[Q] [Solved] Moving to Israel - Hero, G2 Touch General

Hi All,
Am just wondering if there are any Hero users here that live in Israel (city of Haifa to be exact)? Reason is that in a few weeks I will be making the (big) move from NZ to Haifa and am hoping that I could get some advice as to which carriers etc to go for. Not sure if it makes a difference but it is a long term move.
Thanks in advance

Welcom and Shalom
I'm Hero user,
I live in Jerusalem but because Isreal is very small there is no differences between Haifa, Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv
Ask me what ever you want,
I have GSM Hero and I have problem with specific cellular problem (900MHz and 850MHz issues)

i am from israel, raanana. on orange, and have no problem.

Thanks for the replies
I was just wondering about what sort of plans are available / costing / providers that are good?
Even any links to carrier websites would be awesome
Thanks again!

with 2G and doesn't have 3G network fully deployed (probably fine in Haifa)
there are tons of plans in each company, the best way is to call the companies,
all sites are in Hebrew - sorry but I didn't find English support (I believe Russian and Arabic support is available)
I can't upload the links because I'm a new user sorry,
contact me directly

JASJAR/XDA Exec in Japan

Hi everybody
Compliments for an extremely informative and active forum. 8)
I would like to ask if the JASJAR/XDA Exec functions in Japan - I have gathered that it is W-CDMA (UMTS) compatible and subsequently has the ability to do so. :? Although I am not clear
GSM does generally not function in Japan i.e. even my XDA IIs quad band cannot function proficiently in Japan. Moreover, UMTS does function in Japan- does this permit solely video calls (and not standard voice calls)?
The reason for taking one to Japan - The US/EURO PDA phones are generally more visually desirable/advanced than their Japanese counterparts, unlike standard handsets.
Any information/assistance would be much appreciated.
JASJAR+VODAFONE-JP/Docomo
Hi belloragazzo,
Some of japanese have got jasjar and used VODAFONE-JP USIM(W-CDMA (UMTS)) / Docomo in Japan. Also I have got Jasjar and tested VODAFONE-JP SIM in UK for few days.
I hope this helps you.
tom_hiro225 arigatougozaimas!
A dowmo & thank you for your kind reply; it is extremely helpful.
I will buy the JASJAR before I go to Japan and then obtain a Vodafone JP sim if possible.
Once again thank you for your help.
Matane:O)
Yep, Japan use WCDMA (UMTS 2100) that's used in the JasJar. Can't say I've been to Japan since I got my JasJar, but my old 3G phone worked well over there (same principle, at least!)...
JasJar in Japan
I bought the JasJar in England, and was surprised when landed in Japan to have my mobile connected to Vodaphone system in Tokyo. I have used it few days in Tokyo, quality was very good - and I enjoyed connection also in Kashiwa...
Hope it is helpful for you.
Regards
Yes it works, japan Vodafone and Docomo Foma are operation 3G.
You can use those Operatores SIM.
Thats why many japanese guys are buying and bought Universal!
Also some of 3G supported GSM SIMs from out side Japan, can use those operators services as a GSM loaming!
Thank everybody for your kind advice
I will certainly get JasJar before going to live in Japan on 18th October - I understand that I will have to buy a J phone in order to obtain a SIM card to use in Japan.
Can anybody please suggest which is the most suitable contract/prepaid phone to buy with the sole intention of using the SIM card rather than the phone?
Hi belloragazzo,
Here are some information of VODAFONE-JP.
[Price plans]

[Mobile Data Communications]

[Discount services]

Some of retailer has offered free (or discount) 3G phone.
ex. YODOBASHI CAMERA, BIG CAMERA...
Also you can contract SIM only at local VODAFONE shop.
You might be required some proof when you contract. (ID/Address/Payment ID,Bank acount,Driving license, Credit card, Public bills) same like other countries.
cheers
Thank you for both the links and information, I am much obliged.
I will indeed buy the Vodafone JP SIM 8)
The response on this forum is wonderful; it is an excellent source of information for worldwide travellers.
This thread was just what I needed! I'm going on a two week trip to Tokyo and Fukuoka in March and I'm definitely dependant on my jasjar.
thanks a lot!

How about roaming? anyone know if it would make sense to pick up a sim and roam it here in europe? I have japanese bank accounts already.
Auto Roaming in Japan with Exec
Hi guys,
Does anyone know whether will my O2 Exec work in Japan? I just have a basic GSM mobile plan with Telstra (Australia). No 3G nor GPRS services. They cost too much in Australia! I have auto roaming in my mobile plan but when I brought my Exec to Singapore 3 weeks ago, the auto roaming didn't work. I rang Telstra and they told me that they have already activate my auto-roaming.
Anyway, is there something I'm missing out? Do I need to change any settings on the Exec? I'm going to Japan soon and really wanna to be able to receive calls from Australia. Does anyone know whether is there any setting I need to change in order to activate auto roaming on my Exec?
Thank you!
Regards,
Johnnie

You should be able to roam on vodafone jp 3G's network. Whether you have a "3G" plan at home or not, remember 3G or umts is really just a different band, vodafone and most telco's will let you connect to umts where ever possable, you only need upgraded accounts and price plans when you want things like video calling. So in short if you home network will let you roam on vodafone jp then yep you can use your universal.
Guys, don't forget that to be able to use your 3G phone in 3G ONLY network you also need to have a 3G simcard.
Johnnie82, that may be the problem with your EXEC, maybe when you decided not to use 3G in Australia you didn't get the new simcard and you are still using old GSM one, which will work fine there, but won't let you to connect in 3G only network.
Hi Ratcom and Rottie,
Thanks for your input! The both of you have made complete sense to me. I think I should contact Telstra and request for a new 3G simcard without the real 3G capabilities. (Telecommunications in Australia are really expensive compare to country like Singapore.) Which mean a new simcard that will allows me to use Vonefone 3G network while I'm in Japan.
Am I right to do that?
Thanks!
Regards,
Johnnie
then it should be fine.
I'm starting a trip round the world tomorrow and I'm gonna check how my Exec is working in Australia and Japan...
Do you think there is a good 3G coverage on Easter Island?
Hi Rottie,
Mate, You're lucky that you're going around the world holiday! I envy you! Anyway, I believe that you will have no problem logging onto 3G network in all major cities in Australia. But I don't think that you will be able to get much 3G reception in the Easter Island. I got a friend staying there and remembered he telling me that they have only normal GSM service last year. Maybe they have upgraded their network now?
Anyway, enjoy your holidays!
Regards,
Johnnie
I was only joking, wasn't expecting even a GSM there.
Thanks

HTC Tattoo India version (No 3g Support)!!

Guys, I just purchased the Tattoo yesterday after checking specs worldwide and on all forums, and today I was going through the box specs it mentions support only up to EDGE. I was shocked and called the HTC helpline and was told that the India version does not support 3G !!!! This is after the store person checking specs. and confirming that it is 3g...Please can anyone throw light on this...I am saddended as I wanted a future proof phone atleast for a cple of years....Also if any developer or inside guy would have an idea whether this could just be a software limitation or even a hardware one...Thanks
yeah.... even i am fooled like that only. i thought 3G is also there before i buy it. the very next day when i was searching for it, i couldnt get that. very sad with the date of auctioning 3G in india coming nearer & you get a blow underneath is not fair from HTC.... too sad
i didnt expect this kind of royal work from internationally well-known company....
Contacted HTC support
I contacted HTC support and to a very long query they answered
"Dear Kashish Dhanjani,
Thank you for contacting our Customer Support Center. We are dedicated to providing you with the best quality service and answering all of your questions and concerns.
To clarify your issue, you stated that: YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO ACCESS 3 G SERVICES IN HTC DIAMOND.
We would like to intimate that, HTC Tattoo is not 3G enabled phone. It is Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz

If the above steps do not resolve your issue, we invite you to visit the support area on our Web site. Please go to: http://www.htc.com/www/support.aspx
Or you can go to: http://www.htc.com/select_country.htm, select your country and then click on the Support tab.

if you have further questions.
Thank you once again for your continued patronage.

I don't understand what course of action we have here, only we can hope that this is an OS limitation they actually haven't limited the hardware, may be some advanced members can throw some light on this?
hi kashish, its evident from their reply that its EDGE enabled phone only. i hope its not limited by OS. infact hardware itself is not there i guess... how did u come to know that its just an OS limited functionality??? i have no idea.... even i am curious to know the answer because i too own a tattoo just like u....
one doubt i have, what if i flash my tattoo with European ROM's??? will that enable 3G function on my tattoo according to you ???? just curiosity..
we will never knw!
Hey...i dont think we;ll know after flashing unless we get 3g in india! i guess we've been dealt a sour deal..which city are you in? we can go try to raise hell at the HTC service ctnre or something....
i am placed in bangalore... i dont think we can do much about it. more over, they have not quoted anywhere on their asian site saying that, its 3G. even i saw specifications on gsmarena.com & went straightaway to buy it... i dont know about u.
Let me assure u that, if u think that we can do something about it, i will give u company. where r u placed in India???
No 3G in Tattoo
Guys,
I have also been a victim of this and after purchasing the tattoo i came to know there is no 3G... Let me also tell u that the indian version of the HTC Diamond also did not have 3G...
Sitting back and when i started to think.. I went to the htc website and made a bit research.. Going to the European Tattoo site it shows me
HSDPA/WCDMA:
Europe/Asia: 900/2100 MHz
Up to 384 kbps up-link and 7.2 Mbps down-link speeds
and in US its a bit different (P.S. Tattoo is not launched in US yet)
Different regions have different ranges (Refer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UMTS_frequency_bands)
As all are aware that 3G spectrum is not yet finalized in India, I feel that HTC did not take a risk of assuming a spectrum and releasing a 3G radio for it but instead played a safer way of removing the 3G radio from it. so when in the future when the frequency bands are finalized, chances are there for HTC to sell alone the 3G radios which can be inserted onto the Tattoo.
Any comments on my hypothesis are welcomed..
Ram
I think the 3G limitation is a software one, and not a hardware limitation. If you look at the model number for the Tattoo, A3232, it's the same for the Indian as well as other versions. So I'm assuming that the hardware is the same. So i hope that with the much rumoured Android 2.1 update to the Tattoo, 3G capability is brought back.
is the 3G service really a software based one???? now BSNL is offering 3G service in India. why cant we see their 3G service if we do network search then ????
what if we flash our ROM with European tattoo ROM, then shall we get the 3G icon on top of our main screen ??? as we have noticed that icon in youtube videos of tattoo being used in foreign countries???
i am curious to know the answer for this...... pls sheikh.....
TBH, I really don't know for sure if the European ROM will enable 3G. I'm only guessing that since the hardware is the same, the 3G service has been disabled in the Indian ROM.
BTW, yesterday, I played some YouTube videos using my EDGE internet service, and they worked just fine.
thanks for ur timely responses sheik.... i really appreciate that u have shared ur knowledge with us...... keep up the good work bro. i will again disturb u for more knowledge if the situation demands.... pls dont feel bad, ok?????
No problem!
more victims!!
very slyly HTC has released the much celebrated Tattoo, not once it was mentioned that this isnt same as the rest of the world. The tattoo sell for the same price in the UK..we arent exactly a very rich nation comparatively to get a stripped down product at the same price...the phone is awesome...but i really thought it had 3g, any calls to the HTC support comes back with the same response 'sorry to inform you.....' I sincerely hope the limitation is a s/w one!!! any android experts might be able to confirm.....
another victim!
It is really sad, I was also ignorant of this. I am waiting for 3g service at my area to test it.
hi guys, today when i was searching for some settings, i found out that htc tattoo indian version is 3G capable..... i have the proof also...
i will upload it for you those who dont believe in my words....
Wowy!
Please do so fasttt!!!! i am glad...i hope its true!

Great news.. please do share your finding
go to settings> about phone> in that look for baseband version.... there 3G is mentioned.... i hope its the same which says that tattoo is 3G enabled...
did u get a chance to try it out?
Hey the baseband version goes like this
13.29.55.13G_etc...
the pessimist in me says it also looks like 13G....the specs on HTCs India website says its EDGE whereas the same specsheet for its UK website says its 3G/HSDPA....
I think the best way to do it is to pop a BSNL/MTNL card in it; which i tried doing although but given MTNLs history they might not have implemented 3G in the area I was trying it.
but you could have had checked with BSNL's 3G sim and should have trid it whether 3G works or not.....
moreover this EDGE what its displaying in our tattoo is network type which the operators are offering the technology of service for us.... once they get upgraded to 3G, then we can say it for sure that whether its 3G enabled or not....
anyway sorry for disappointing you guys.... i was also as enthusiastic as you were while buying & until i came to know about this news..... hope for the best.... if there is no 3G in tattoo...no worries.... always google nexus is there no..... cheapest one with all the features... we all here can get one piece for their own from our relatives / friends..... not a big deal right ?????
just chill guys... why to break our heads for this 3G ?????

Anyone Used a TMOUS HD2 in Asia or Europe with 3g?

I understand the bands. The confusion is that TMOUS uses 2100 up and 1700 down (or vice versa) for 3g, so some think that it can't handle the Euro and Asian 2100 up and down. There's no clear specs that I can see where 2100 is a standalone for up and down for 3g data.
I've read threads here from supposedly knowledgeable people saying that it can and can't work. That is why I'd like someone who has actually tried it rather than guesses and speculation.
I hope you're right and thanks for the info.

I'm with you and I agree the labeling is somewhat inconsistent.
However, the consistency I've seen in any official docs, including the manual and FCC is if they list 1700 in the official specs, it's FDD-IV AWS (1700+2100), and if they list 2100, it's FDD-I (1900+2100).
In fact, there has never been any official docs that explicitly list what the up/down frequencies are so you can definitely take it as Band-I and Band IV.
Band-I can be used with most Asia/Euro carriers
I hope you guy's are right. I'll feel much better when someone actually uses a TMOUS HD2 in Europe or Asia with 3G an reports back.

remember that the G1 works in europe fine with the 3g. us g1 has been used in europe so i don't see the HD2 being any different. if not call htc and tell them you will be traveling abroad with your HD2 and will it work in europe with 3g.

True, but I think the HD2 uses a different radio that is part of the Snapdragon chipset, I may be totaly wrong, but that's why I'm so dubious.
Good idea, I never thought of calling HTC. Although, I think I recall a post by someone doing that before the phone came out and the HTC rep just recited the supported bands instead of giving a definitive yes or no to 3g working in Asia/Europe. Nothing like real world use from someone actually doing it I suppose. Some of the reps at these companies know less than we do about their own products, lol. Either way a call to HTC can't hurt, thanks for the suggestion.

Thank you. I'll be looking forward to hearing your response.
I called HTC customer support and the rep told me that Asia, Europe, and the US are on different "networks", so we will not receive 3g outside the US. I'm pretty sure the rep has no clue. To be honest, if the rep told me it would work I would still not feel relieved, they seem to not know the most basic of things about their products.
We'll just have to wait till someone here reports back.
Since US HD2 has band 1 and 4 UMTS, it'll surely work in Europe and Asia (except in band 8 area).
Hi,

I sent an email to HTC regarding 3G and this is what I got:
"Thank you for contacting HTC.
With reference to your query, normally HTC HD2 does support 3G network. However, since this is an US local customize phone, we would suggest you to contact with HTC US for double check. You can select the country for US to drop them an email to check that.

[Q] 3G in China

Hi there guys!I want to buy an unlocked G2 and use it in China.I'm wondering whether I can make it fully working 3G connection in China.Band of Unicom in China is 1900 and 2100.Thanks a lot!
quick answer: no
G2 is aws (1700)
i believe unicom uses 2100 for 3g

Until someone disassembles the phone and looks at the power amps, there will not be a clear answer. However, I think the FCC documents are pretty conclusive. I think you should just play it safe and get a Desire Z. That is sure to have 900/2100 UMTS radio.
Yeah, but It costs so much to get a Desire Z from Europe.I'm still a university student in China.I can save a lot by asking my friend to buy G2 from America and give me when he's back.I think I'd better give up htc and have a look at the others.

Oh,I can't wait any more.I lost my cellphone 4 months a ago,so I need a new one to replace my 5-years-old motorola. We shall meet M9 in November, and M8,which is a WM phone, doesn't appeal to me.I'm still confused about AWS.It is said it works on 1710-1750 MHz and 2110-2155MHz.Unicom in China works on 1940-1955MHz(UL)和2130-2145MHz(DL).So we can find they have the same frequency at 2100MHz.Why can't they match each other?Do they have to have the same band on upload and download?
OK

New Zealand Thread

There are two specific Kiwi issues I would like to discuss.
Does anybody know where to obtain a stock ROM for the I9000 from Telecom New Zealand? I believe there is only Eclair, but would like to be proven wrong. I may require this in case of any warrany issues and to reset before upgrading to Gingerbread (at least I am led to believe this).
Which modem are you using (again Telecom NZ) on your custom ROMs? I have tried a few and I am currently using JL2. I had to flash this separately while using Darky's ROM 9.3, which worked fine in some parts of town but not at all in others (I presume it could not handle the 850 band).
Many thanks in advance

I believe JL2 is the correct modem to use. Do you have a Telecom SGS as the Vodafone one obviously does not support the 850mhz band that Telecom requires. It is possible that the rom/modem combo you are using disables the 850mhz band which would explain why some parts of town aren't working. I'm pretty sure there is a way to enable it if your hardware supports.
As for the thing about the stock rom, I think maybe you should ask people on the Geekzone forums - http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=97&topicid=62267&page_no=323
telecom froyo
I have the telecom froyo release even though it has not been released officially.
i got it from Modaco,(i think cant quite remember), if someone could tell me how to post a download link i can put it up here. Also i have a rom which makes it relly easy to get 850Mhz back. Im at work at the moment so cant post that yet either.
Im using JVE modem with multi csc which works great in new zealand, JVE good for battery too.
pm me if your interested.
Choice one.
Keeping all the New Zealand info in one thread for neatness.
I've just moved in New Zealand from UK. I have UK SGS I9000.
Which New Zealand network would you recommend getting a Sim Card for?
Should I switch my ROM to a New Zealand based one? Hoping to use the free SatNav software too (is it called Navigon or something?), in case this makes a difference on ROM choice.
I've been told that 2degrees is the cheapest network.
Are there any hardware / software limitations on which network I should choose with a UK unit? 850Mhz band availability?
Love to hear your thoughts...
Thanks
Mike
Welcome to NZ. The network will depend on your location: 2 Degrees is cheap but has low coverage in rural areas, Vodaphone is ok in cities. I am with NZ Telecom, they get a bit of flak for problems they have had in the past. However, they are investing huge amounts and have the best rural coverage. Please be aware that your phone will have to use the 850 band in some areas.
I recommend the JL2 modem (ROM kitchen) and Darky 9.3 with Voodoo kernel.
Navigation for GPS use.
I'm with 2Degrees and they're cheap. But as a poster above had mentioned, the coverage outside big cities is limited, especially for data. This of course will change with time. Plus I'm a big supporter of NZ owned businesses.
Vodafone is a horrible company to deal with. Plus they have a lot of network issues everywhere in the country.
I have heard good things about the XT network (Telecom) in terms of speeds and coverage. If I wasn't on the tight budget, this is what I would choose in NZ. I hope this helps. :>

Just a quick correction, coverage is fine as the device roams on Voda when out of zone. So if there's voda coverage, there's 2degrees coverage (data is not as cheap though).
I'm using CM7, JPM. All seems fine.
Hello from Hamilton.
Thanks for the advice.
I'm probably going to be mainly in the Wellington region, so should have reasonable coverage on any network. Glad to hear that 2degrees has roaming on Voda though.
Will my UK I9000 SGS have 850MHz band available in the hardware? (sorry if this is a silly question). Will it be used if I have the correct firmware? Is 850MHz band used by all networks in NZ, or only for some networks?
All of the networks appear to be quite pricey for data. Who are the most cost effective for data? I'll be looking for either PAYG or Monthly Sim Only deals.
Thanks again for the great info.

I presume you're talking about 850MHz 3G and not 2G.
Vodafone and 2degrees have 900MHz 3G.
Telecom has 850MHz 3G.
I think your UK i9000 supports 900MHz from what I have managed to find out.

Telecom New Zealand
ive got an international i9000 that i bought before work (telecom) stocked them - so I cant get staff subsidy on my cell heh - I have 2degrees - because of the data pack and living in town - it was bad coverage where i lived out on the west coast at murawai - but in town i have no issues - even in the middle of the telecom borg cube building - i get my 2degrees data and voice coverage
I cannot recommend anyone to you - but I have converted some of the telecom staff i9000's to darkyrom's The theory is that version of the rom supports the 850mhz band - I guess I find out tomorrow with one of them
About backing up your factory rom - root the rom is the minimum first step and then you can make an odin image out of whatever is on the phone.

dunno if that link will be visible or not...
have fun
Thanks guys.
I've gone with 2 degrees for now on a simple pre-pay sim and all looks good. I'll see how much I use it and maybe get an appropriate monthly contract if needed in the future.

Quick further question...
Which CSC code do New Zealanders have? Should I, stick with my generic UK code, or move to a NZ one? What do you use and recommend?
Does which CSC I have affect my ability to use Navigon for free?
(I forget what my current CSC code is, but I noticed my Google Market is now priced in NZ dollars already, but they want to charge me for navigon download, which I thought was free over here. Ultimately I'll deal with Navigon, in the Navigon thread, and ask about CSC here... Just wondering if there is any implications of what makes a better CSC.)

If you've rooted your sgs then try using this app called GPS AIDS from the market. Its very good, i usually get a gps lock in 5-10 seconds indoors with a cold start.

Yea, I've been using that app for a while now.
It is very good indeed.
But I would like to improve it more by chaning gps pool through this app actually.
I was wondering whether I should use NZ server for gps or worldwide one...
Set to oceania.pool.ntp.org using FasterFix or other suitable apps.
Has anybody gone 2.3.3 yet? If yes, what about the modem performance on the XT network?

O rite. From what i remember there's only 3 or 4 to choose from(europe, north america, i mite be forgetting one). The results i posted above were for the europe pool. so i reckon anything better than that would do.

Sorry, I cannot answer that with certainty. I do not believe that there are vast differences. I have tried Asia, North America and our version Oceania. I am however, very unhappy with the GPS performance, in particular the length of time to get a fix. Needleess to say, I have followed most guides and tried various fixes. I am, however, limited in changing modems as I rely on 850mhz band.
