I keep getting this error message when i hit system updates in the about phone section.
"com.android.settings.deviceinfo.CheckUpdate is not available without a social networking account. To create a new account, click "Setup" button"
If I try to load social networking from the applications list, it says i have to setup a social networking account also. But when I go to accounts, it wont let me delete the facebook account (says error) and there is no 'social networking' account in add accounts. This is a really strange error, I'm thinking maybe due to downloading the regular facebook app. I deleted it and still am getting the same error. Not sure if accidently deleted the social networking app but its still listed under the manage applications section.
Anyone have any ideas on this one?
I am having this same problem. When I go into "About Phone" and check for updates, I get a popup message on the screen instantly that says:
com.android.settings.deviceinfo.CheckUpdate is not available without a social networking account. To create a new account, click "Setup" button"
There is a button labeled "setup" and a button labeled "Cancel". When I hit "Setup", nothing happens.
If I go into Accounts on the phone, it shows two sections:
MOTOBLUR Accounts
Other Accounts
MOTOBLUR accounts has nothing under its header, and Other Accounts has my GMail account. When I hit "Add Account", there isn't an option to setup a MotoBlur account, or add my existing MotoBlur account to the phone. Instead it gives me the option of adding MySpace, Facebook, LastFM, Twitter, Email, Corportate Sync, Picasa, Photobucket, LinkedIN, or Yahoo Mail to my MotoBlur Account.
I figured I'd try adding one of those to my MotoBlur account in hopes that it would realize that it lost my MotoBlur account and let me add my MotoBlur account back in. Sadly, this was note the case. I chose Picasa, put in my name and password and got the following error:
"There was an error creating your account. Please try again.
There was an error creating your account. Please try again."
(Yes, it said it twice)
I tried the same thing with Twitter, and again I got the same error message box (and again it said the error twice).
For some background on my setup... I am rooted and have unlocked the boot loader. I also used Titantium to Freeze everything in the "Comprehensive List" on this website:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=972459
I did unfreeze everything I had frozen on the phone, rebooted it, and I get the exact same results...
Accounts lists a header for MOTOBLUR Accounts and Other Accounts, but has nothing under MotoBlur.
When I try to do updates and it says that I need a social networking account and I click "Setup", nothing happens.
When I launch the Social Networking App, it says that I need an account, and my options are "setup" and cancel. When I hit "Setup" 3 in 4 times the app just closes on the spot, 1 in 4 times the phone rebooted just after the app closed itself.
So can anyone shed some light onto this? It seems obvious to me that the problem is that my phone "lost" its MotoBlur account. Is there a way to set one up again without wiping the phone?
DK
I have previously borked Motoblur by freezing something I shouldn't have, and thawing didn't help matters. I'm guessing you'll be doing a wipe and clean install in your near future.
This may not be relevant since I'm running the 2.3.4 build, but I have an app called Social Networking in my app drawer. When I click on it I can add a MotoBlur type account for a variety of social networks. I don't remember if this was there in the stock build. I think I remember a social widget of some sort though. Maybe you could add that to a screen, and it would provide the actual mechanisms for adding the social networking account.
Im getting this too in my rooted atrix, the unrotted i have us fine.

Rooted versus non-rooted shouldn't matter. I was rooted on 4.1.26 and did the OTA to 4.1.57, re-rooted and did OTA to 4.1.83.
There must be a way to have the MotoBlur setup to come up again without wiping the whole phone. There doesn't seem to be an icon for it, but there must be something I can run through a terminal window or over ADB that will re-launch the MotoBlur setup.
DK
I put up a post on the Moto Forums, and a Moto Employee said that there is no way to re-run the MotoBlur account setup.
The thing is... I'm nearly positive that there is a way. I'd find it very hard to believe that the application to setup your MotoBlur account when you turn on the phone for the first time is programmed such that it removes itself after its done. That would mean that its still on the phone somewhere. Right?
I'm hardly an Anroid pro, but I am most definately not a typical end user either. Any advice to point me in the right direction would be appreciated. Since I don't "need" OTA updates until GB is out (unless CM7 or anything good custom ROM beats Moto), I have plenty of time to look around the phone for a solution to this.
DK
if you wipe your phone you will get this option back to add a motoblur account again
there is a 'setup' app in the app drawer for those who want to setup blur later.
If you are on bell search flawless bell update I have a howto.
If you're on att you're going to need to find a stock system.img to push onto your phone.
I've been trying to figure out how to sync my Facebook with my phone, but I think I'm running into a glitch. I go to Settings, Accounts & sync, Add Account. I then click on the facebook button, but then it just shoots me back to the previous page (Accounts & sync). The very first time I did this, it asked me to log into my account, but then it didn't add my FB account and just brought me back to the previous screen. I've looked online for a solution, tried things like uninstalling the facebook app and reinstalling it, but it just does the same thing. Any thoughts?

You didn't look particularly hard did you? Check down on the Themes/Apps section for this phone. There is a leftover bit from the SE code that was stripped that ends up blocking the addition of a FB account from the official FB app. You have to use another app. Try using the SonyEricsson Life.Contacts beta, or use WATTO's FB Synch adapter (I use the latter, but there isn't an option to synch only matching contacts, just all or nothing).

sign out of the fbook app, so there is no account associated with it, go to manage applications and clear data for the fbook app, no go to accounts and settings and try to sign in

I follow your instructions:
I sign out, clear data, and THEN do accounts-->sync--->add account--->facebook--->sign in---->fb starts up--->i back out of it--->nothings changed in my contacts, and furthermore when I go into accounts: there is still only google synced up. no evidence of any fb sync

For those not stuck on the borked CDMA version, yes, this. Also make sure you have not moved the FaceBook application to the SD card, as that will also commonly mess up the account synch adapters.
Same goes for me. I logged out, cleared app cache, cleared app data, reinstalled, tried to add FB sync account, logged in successfully, facebook opened but no sync account was added.
The only way i figured it out is to use the r800x UK firmware because it uses the sony ericsson base instead of google, so facebook contacts arent blocked.
My two cents, hope it helps

Hey there! Sorry if this is redundant, as I've seen different threads complaining about this kind of issue; however, have not been able to find resolution, so I thought I'd start a new thread to see if someone can point me in the right direction.
Symptoms:
RSS: Newsfeed widgets won't update. I removed the RSS feed subscription and attempted re-add it. The phone was able to detect that there was an RSS feed on the website (tried multiple), but when I hit "SUBSCRIBE", I get, "Error Try again later."
Facebook: The market facebook app works properly. But trying to get facebook to sync (it was previously synced just fine) is unsuccessful. When I try to add a social network via the Social Networking app or if I go to CONTACTS > SETTINGS > ACCOUNTS > Add account, there are two instances of Facebook listed. Before, one of them (the smaller of the two icons) would have the e-mail address box shaded out, but the password box allowed me to enter a password but with no account e-mail address to marry it to. I was able to successfully remove the account via this thread: Can't remove facebook account from my accounts? using SQ Lite editor (this cured it the last time I had a problem), but now when I try to log in with the "other" Facebook icon (this one seems to be linked to the Social Networking app, the other seems to be linked to the Facebook market app), I get, "Adding Facebook account" for about a half second and then, "Error Your request was denied, please try again." Facebook contacts will not sync with phone contacts (though I have sync checked). (I'll get to "what I've tried" after the symptoms)
Can't update the phone:
I go to System Updates under "About Phone" and get (almost immediately), "Check for update is not available at this time. Try again later."
What I've tried:
I've removed the Facebook market app and used the SQ Lite editor to remove the string as instructed. This changed the small Facebook icon within the Social networking accounts to allow me to enter an e-mail address; however, I get the error mentioned above. It doesn't seem to act like it's a bad email/password...it's like there's no connection attempted. Plus, I can log into the Facebook app. I also tried re-removing/logging out of the larger icon Facebook app within Social Networking and then re-trying to log into the other. Failed. Same messages.
Naturally, I did the battery pull, reboot, cache clean, etc.
I am rooted and use Droid Wall and App Quarantine. I also have Root Browser. I attempted to un-quarantine and restore all blocked apps. I had not blocked anything new between the last update of my widgets and the problem starting. I removed all widgets as well to try to give the phone a clean attempt at restoring this. Had had previously been getting offered the new update for the DROID X but did not download it so as not to lose root.
I also attempted to clear data on the social apps. Some would not allow me the ability to clear the data. I also cleared facebook data before uninstalling the app.
I'm trying to find a solution that doesn't require system restore.
Anyone else seeing this or have an understanding what function shares all of these issues?
you can can not update if any stock apps are frozen or edited
you can not update if phone is not activated on verizon
you can try SBFing without data wipe, may or not work
or you can try my stock nandroid, advanced restore>system only

Hello,
I am using a new Galaxy S4 Google Edition and when searching for the facebook app, the actual app does not appear. Facebook messenger comes up, as well as other facebook apps but the official facebook app does not come up. If I put in a search for facebook, not press the search button, and select the facebook app that appears in the drop down, I get the dreaded "can not retrieve information from server" message. I have tried all of the other tips (clearing cache, uninstalling updates, resetting the phone, etc.) without any success. All other apps that I use are fine.
Any ideas?

search via PC in Play Store and install to your phone. simple!
When I sign into Twitter, the app works but I get a notification that asks to authorize Twitter to sync with Social Network. When I tap "Authorize", the notification comes back and there's a bubble on the screen saying "unable to complete the action".
I tried:
- Tried uninstalling Twitter
- I removed all apps from Twitter to reauthorize them
- Hard reset (I just started configuration so it wasn't a problem)
Nothing worked.
Anyone know what I can do?
Thank you
