First i would like to say thank you to all the devs for their hard work and effort they put into these froyo roms. Let me just say that WOW my phone is 500 times better off than it was on froyo cuz i went back to superd 1.1 man, talk about a major improvement on, speed, battery, look, and stability... i missed my 1.6 and froyo is just overrated lately... but i suggest people go back and see what were missing out on some real speed and improvement..... will someone at least try it, and let me know your results/opinion. thanks
This should be general. Yes I am being bland about it.
I'm holding out on upgrading to Froyo. They are too slugish for my G1 and those roms drain my battery really fast.
I'm on a custom lite version of SuperFast v1.3.3. My battery life on the g1 is averaged somewhere in between 12-24 hours depending on the settings and daily use.
I felt the same way about froyo... overrated... Im on donut as well (supercsdiv4) and im very happy, the rom flies the battery life is good and i can play almost any 3d game i have tried.
there are a few good froyo roms but they are still a bit slow... im gonna wait for a while and see what the devs come out with
Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm, but as the other guy said, this should definitely be in general.
I have a feeling BiffMod and SuperF will be some of the fastest froyo roms, but for now, im sticking with donut.

This forum has been blowing up the last few days with roms and toasts new kernel, it's awesome, but also hard to keep up. It seems like most of the 1.6-2.1 roms are pretty incomplete so far, understandably. Just curious as to which non 1.5 roms /kernels are being used as a daily rom and how fast/reliable they have been.
SOOOO many pages on the darchstar threads, I almost posted this in there, but was afraid it would be swallowed up in the huge abyss and be three pages back and mixed in with the 40 other questions currently waiting to be answered on there.
My daily is gbhil's 1.6 Donut rom. My only complaint is no MMS. Other than that, I love it. It's much better than the stock 1.5 rom (other than the MMS issue). I'm also not a big bluetooth user, though. As I understand it, that isn't working on very many - if any - of the 1.6+ ROMs.
It would be nice if maybe they added a "features" and "not working" to each ROM in the sticky. I think that would go a long way to helping people make a good decision about their ROM choice.
I'd like bt and mms but that rom looks pretty nice. Adding what works/doesn't would be key for the wiki. I have to give credit to whoever keeps it updated though, roms are popping out and changing so fast. I feel like I've been living in a cave cuz I still rock gumbo 1.5b, lol, it's been like 2 weeks.
Most of the ROM's have a what works/what doesn't on the first page of the ROM thread. They haven't all kept them as updated as I would like either, but they're there
can't wait to get a working 2.1 rom.. I'm so sick of the laggy 1.5
As far as a stable and fast 1.5 ROM, try Fresh 1.1 with the addition of gbhil's Gumbo Kernel installed. It's blazing fast, and has good battery life. For 2.1, there is really only one 2.1 right now. I'm using it, and so far I haven't had any problems.

Try the Gumbo 1.5c Bare ROM. It seems to be the fastest of the 1.5s.

Dumb question but how do u install kernels???
The custom roms for some reason do not compare to the speed of the stock rom.
Just update the radio and stay with stock.
Until the evo kernal source gets released.
Otherwise for now, we are using another phone's source, which is for me, slowing everything down.
good for you. ive been with win mo since 2002 and i IMMEDIATELY customize/reg hack those devices as they needed it.. the touch pro2 was the first handset i really didnt need to hack into.. it was built pretty good for me and my lifestyle...
the evo... i see no reason to hack into it at this time. with the way linux manages the RAM and programs under the hood, there is no need in MY case to do anything... it runs just great stock.
so bravo to you sir for going against the grain and staying pretty much stock..

I have to agree.
I use the stock with root rom the only difference is root permissions theres no lag or increased battery drain on my evo
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide
Use odexed damagecontrol rom and set dconfig to equal battery and performance. Tell me that dieabt compare. You can set to battery saver and easily double battery lif too
I think deodexed roms are slower even tho ppl say no they feel it to me
Custom ROMs beat the pants off the stock ROM at everything. Your loss.

The stock rom was terribad slow compared to everything else I tried.
I don't see how you came to these results.
Also, HTC Sense is the cancer killing Android.

I don't know what you're doing wrong but I couldn't agree less. That stock rom is a sloppy bloat-ware filled lag fest.
The source may be for another phone but it's for an identical platform. Sure, there is some slightly different hardware but that's mostly taken care of in the board files so far as I understand it.
Either way, take this anecdotal evidence as you will but I first flashed Fresh 0.2. Things got smoother and snappier. More free memory, longer lasting battery, more responsive interface. Then I tried out various Froyos. All very faster, awesome performance. That 30fps/screenlag problem seems more apparent when the OS is hauling that much ass, but no big deal. I tried froyo with a low-voltage OC kernel and put it up to 1.2ghz min/max with screen on, and 128mhz min/max screen off. The performance was amazing and the battery life was even better than ever. Given my moderate usage pattern I could have easily taken this 'charge daily' phone and made it a 'charge every other day' phone. Bugless Beast was also really fast and relatively battery sipping for me.
I don't know where you are coming from man, but all of the hard work from all of the devs here has had immediate positive impact on every aspect of my Evo experience...sure, there are a couple experimental hacks that make some strange **** happen, but it's usually pretty obvious what those are and why.
Now I just put Fresh 0.3 on last night, the performance is top notch. The battery life seemed to drain rather quickly but I also left the 55fps Nova screen hack on all night to test it out, which I haven't been doing. So today I charged to 100% with the stock kernel, wiped the battery stats and I'm going to see how that works. Worst-case scenario it's something in fresh 0.3 and I'll just continue to bounce between baked desert, fresh 0.2 and BB4.
Either you are doing it wrong or there is actually something hardware-wrong with your phone.
Try again man, it works great for me.
i'm still stock myself but i do have root with unrevoked. i don't have a need to use a custom rom yet and i am definately waiting until froyo 2.2 comes before i do as that will be a game changer... i came from a at&t tilt that had a custom winmo 6.5 rom and the evo blows it out of the water, so i am enjoying my stock evo at the moment...
nothing wrong with flashing though to a different rom, its whatever floats your boat, some people flash as soon as they can, others wait and some never do... choice is great...

I rooted mine in the Radio Shack parking lot at 6am, lol.
But I agree with you, do what works best for you.
OK so hopefully my N1 should get to me tomorrow, and I'm wanting to put a ROM on it (think its just running stock 2.2.1 ATM according to the seller).
I'm quite drawn to MIUI at the minute, because of speed and battery life, and I quite like the hybrid iphone/android look, but I have read some comments that this isn't quite an every day ROM just yet, as it has a few issues and bugs.
The other I keep reading about is CM6 but what is battery life and speed like? Is this a more complete ROM than MIUI or am I better off with the former?
Are there any good ROMs I should consider other than those - I am after something that is fast, reliable, and pretty (the pretty isn't essential but is desirable).
I know I could look for myself, but I figured that opinions from those who've tried different ROMs in anger would be very useful.
It really is a personal preference thing. So try them all, that's the great thing about the N1.
I didn't like miui, too iPhoney, but a very nice rom none the less.
CM6 is the rom I use, very complete and feature packed. Speed is excellent but battery life less than others. But with IntersectRaven's kernel I get pretty good battery life
Enomther rom is another good one, with really good battery life. Evil's sense ports are really good too
But really you have to try them, you will find one you like
Best of luck, and welcome to one of the best phones you will ever own

Crazy idea, if you're new to Android, how about using the stock ROM for a while? Even if you're not new, using the stock ROM is a good way to gauge if the phone is solid.. If you put $random_rom on it and you have problems you won't know if it's the phone, the ROM, your apps, etc..

I'm not totally new to android - my girlfriend has an HTC Magic with Cupcake on it, and I've briefly owned an HTC Desire (had a fault) and have had a Galaxy S for the last 4 months (which I'm getting rid of because it's unreliable).... but you do make a good point about the phone, so thanks I may do that, but I'd still like suggestions because I can't see it staying stock for long
Evil D:'s NXSense is pretty awesome!
+1 for staying stock. Once you find something you want to do but stock won't let you, then it's time to go with custom rom.

MIUI is stable and is my everyday ROM based on speed, battery life and stability. If you don't like the default iPhone looking launcher, just use LauncherPro.
Enothemer's ROM is also very nice.
I thought CM6 was the bomb but realised that Enothemer/MIUI had most of what I needed to tinker with anyways. Battery life was horrid with CM6.

I'm using v1.15 of Evil's NXSense ROM, and I absolutely love it! It's fairly stable and the battery life is great -- I routinely can go 48 hours with light-moderate use. I'm particularly impressed with Sense, which is so much better than I believed it could be.
The only thing I miss from stock is the unified inbox for email.
"Fairly" stable you say? :-s
Incidentally I've just read about the fact the power button on it WILL break, is it really that flimsy :-o I was under the impression these things were well built?
Anyway thanks for the ideas, I always thought sense on the htc desire was pretty nice, is this evil d rom better than that?
Might have to get myself swype as I'm quite used to it on the sgs now.

Please don't make it look like MIUI comes from Enom, kthx.
Run the stock rom long enough to learn what it is, otherwise you dont know what you had to start with and wont know what you gained or lost. Its good to keep in mind that most roms will only partly meet your needs and will likely have something in them you dont want where you might actually prefer the stock version over whatever was added. You wont know that if you dont fiddle with stock long enough to see what it brings to the table. If you are relatively new to flashing roms consider a conservative stability first rom like enom to start out.
MIUI is what i'm currently using and i'm really digging it
it's got good battery life and an overall good experience
highly reccomend to use it with launcher pro though, as the iphone look is very ugly/cluttered IMO
if i were you though i'd hold off on MIUI since it does have a few bugs and since you're just getting the phone tomorrow it'd be kinda hard to distinguish if the problem was with your phone or the rom,
on that note, staying stock for a couple days wouldn't hurt but if you're anything like most of us here you're probably eager to get some custom roms on there
anyway i digress, enom's got the best battery life hands down and there's plenty of tweaks and customizations (although not as many as cyanogen's of course) and it's an extremely stable and dependable rom. for me it's kinda like my "go-to rom"
as for cyan's rom, it's a nice rom with an myriad of tweaks and options but i've always had battery life issues with it.
evil's nxsense is also a sweet rom if you're into sense and battery life/stability isn't too bad on it.
actually, any way you slice it, you're gonna have a great rom on your phone! so i say try 'em all and have fun haha
ok so I am somewhat new to roms on the HTC Evo. I have only now rooted my phone and am currently running Cyanogenmod 6.0.0. So far I have no complaints, and I do like how much faster/smoother it runs due to not having a ton of sense applications running and using all of the memory. It is the only rom I have really used other than stock. so I am wanting to know what are some good rom's to try out (and which one is the best out there) and why do you use it or like them. I am also looking to get better battery life and as far as I know I have turned off/done all of the fixes to get the maximum battery life. Thanks again, and I will be looking forward to hearing from you guys. thanks again.
Fresh ROM, because it works flawlessly, stable, and lightweight. Excellent battery life. Relatively frequent updates. 2nd choice is CianogenMod, but it is a little restrictive, and I had a few small problems with it.
wow over 100 views and no one wants to add anything lol. I may have come to the wrong forums.....I am looking for roms, the good, the bad and the ugly. I am currently using Cyanogenmod 6.0.0 and have used fresh 3.3. Other than, that, only used stock. Which roms are good for battery life.....which ones are good for smoothness and speed lol. come on I know there are a bunch of guys with Evo's out there. help out a newbie.
CM6 for my main ! its simple fast stable
AVA9 for a sense rom its pretty flawless ! great battery life !
Fresh ROM ... Hey its fresh what more is there to say
Fresh roms are great, I am currently running Calkulin's 1.4 with riptide theme and love it.

I've never used AVA9 but you say the battery life is great, is it better or equal to CM6 or fresh?
My personal favorite is Fresh as well, but AVA is a close second and my current ROM.
I want to like cyanogen a lot but without 4G it's pretty useless to me.

ok very cool. I really like CM6 due to it's simplicity but battery life could be better on my end. I seem to get better battery life on Fresh but then again, I am using whatever kernel's come with CM6 and fresh.
I was running Fresh 3.3 from and the previous Fresh 3.xx. I like the sense UI so I tried out AVA 9. Both have been great, super fast compared to stock and battery life has been far better than stock.
Awesome devs and awesome roms I'll just may end up trying them all

He makes damn fine roms I wouldn't say they are the best. But they are dam good
From the fade
So far my favorite is Ava. I am getting great battery life(I have my own thread reporting my battery life) and I actually like sense. I used CM6 but I got kind of bored. I probably didn't use it the way it should, but still. I was not impressed with the battery life either.
am i only one who actually like MIUI rom? there are some problems but i actually like it
EViO by Caulkin is the best, by far.
Currently using CM6 just because I like AOSP android more than sense but out of all the sense roms my favorite would have to be Fresh.
Myn's twopointwo is just sex on wheels, err, evo. More than enough said.
YOu know I have ran a variety of Gingerbread prots including ones from virus, even Cyanogen. But for me these leave so little RAM left and it slows my evo down. I currently run Mikfroyo 4.62 because its just optimized stock.
It would be nice to see a highly optimized stock gingerbread that is official gingerbread+ ginger update.
I know alot of like the sense 3.0 lockscreen. I like that to and its the one reason why i sort of see myself switcvhing back to mikg every other day it seems liek adn more often lol. But As for slow downs idk if its the sense 2.1+3.0 elemnts or its just the sense 2.1 that slows down my phone. But it be nice just to see a optimized stock ginger. I know eventualy this might come out. BUt I would rather see a optimized sense 1.0 with 2.1 and 3.0 elements if ever possible due to performance. For me i get major slow downs. It is just teh phones not the developers because they do everything they can and i support each and every one of their works and each developer even if its a simple mod or tweak they do. Its our phones.
But till then I will start to switch over anf flash to mikg every other day to see about performance and start flashing to a few other gingerbread ones. (trust me i flash alot.. my usb port no longer lets me enter hard drive mode only charge on my evo.also tried other cords as well).
I am going to reprot my findings on each of the roms here eventualy and hopefully. But till then.
It would be c ool to see a stock optimizer developer go to work on the rom.
Also performance tweaks for higher sense versions can only go so far. (also battery life isn't an issue becaus eim going for a extended battery eventualy soo that factor doesnt change my opinion on the rom at this point.
Also im not some disgruntled person demanding things or whatever you might think it is, but im just here stating a few things for me and likely the same for a few others. Like i said i support allt eh developers and used alot of ROMS. its not the software in the case of performance for me. Alot of the ginger bread froms are fast just not as performance wise as the froyo version im running. And i do expect some degradation jsut due to a higher OS but i get slow downs just simply scrolling on every rom I have tried (cyanogen i just dont like teh feel of it soo not much performance wise is the reason why i dont use it just the feel)
Till such time i can see a optimized stock ginger + ginger updates I will experiment and report findings also whenever a higher revision comes out of a selecet few roms since software perfomance tweaks do do some good.
Thanks to all teh developers though for all teh hard work. We all appreciate what your doign and the time you spend on it. :}
