[Q] Exchange email working with Sense builds only? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

hi Guys, can't seem to find an answer to this and hoping someone would know...can you use exchange email with stock Froyo 2.2 or only with the Sense builds? Thanks for any advice.

OK, how should I say it....
The Sense exchange support is not as good as the native froyo support.
Why ?
Sense can only support one exchange server.
The vanilla Froyo part can support multiple exchange servers, in my case the companies exchange and my private zarafa.
So far, yes, stock froyo support exchange.
greets
dominic

Exchange
I have had it working on ALL builds I have tried (ShubCraft, Bangsters, HyperDroid, FryoStone to name a few) no problems from day one. I recommend getting touchdown from the market if you want to use it seriously, the options are way more advanced and user friendly, the widgets are also excellent. worth the £20.

I haven't had any trouble using Bangsters v1.2. Make are you clear out each entry before you fill in your account information. I found that when I simply completed an entry by adding to what was already three it wouldn't connect. If I cleared each entry and then typed my info into the blank, no troubles. Best of luck.

Ok thanks to all, sounds like I am good to go...but numbskull, seeing as you have tried all the builds, which one did you stick with? I am still on froystone V1 (v2 seems to have issues from what I can read) but am using LauncherPro so don't figure I need a Sense build (although, is the dialer different without Sense?). Heh, hijacking my own thread!

I have finished on ShubCraft STOCK CM6, using ADW. no issues for over a weeks use now, enjoying it. But I am using the r10 kernel from michaprima, a good combo, not th one that comes with shubcraft.

Exchange works also without Sense!
Hi. Exchange works also without Sense! I tested it already on many BUILDS with and without Sense.

Extract exchange support from HTC SENSE?

Hi,
Is there any possibility that you smart guys could extract only the exchange capabilities from HTC's SENSE?
edit sorry guys
1. Wrong section
2. Search Button
3. ... all I am going to say.
Thanks,
There you go. Give it a try.
More politely put no it is not possible but you can use senseui with the normal launcher and have your exchange support.
Or just use touchdown OR motogal and motocal
Widgets
My problem is that I LOVE the widgets. the Calender Widget to be specific. I wish the Android calender would merge Exchange and Google calender information and present it out on a unified calender like HTC does. And I used Modaco's kitchen to dump the Sense UI but that also leaves me without the calendar and mail widgets :-(
Not working
Talderon - I have searched but didn't get a satisfying answer.
InGeNeTiCs - Tried it (adb push), but I don't see any new app..
genibus - If I get you correct, you are saying that the only possible way is using HTC Desire's ROM?

I need to overlay google cal and exchange cal. I am using calwidget which is nice, but I need a full calendar app. (i.e - pick a specific date, and see whats happening in both calendars)
I need to accept calendar invitations from exchange (Push) - motocal can do it only if I happen to navigate to the date and see the event invitation there. there's no way to know you received an invitation, and there's no centralized place where I can see my invitations.
I need to be able to search GAL from the email application. I have motogal, but it's not what i'm looking for. let's say someone sent me an email, I want to forward it to someone in the company. I dont want to go to motogal, search, copy, paste... I want to have the search in the TO field of the wmail app.
I need to search email and calendar..
These are the main problems...
Thanks for the help
Why do people seem to believe that everything can be ported, or "extracted" from everything. Not everything (as sad as this may be to some) can be ported to every single 'thing'. People seem to constantly ask for things from HTC Sense here, but they do not seem to comprehend that HTC Sense requires a specific framework, without Rosie we cannot simply port every minor detail over to the standard Vanilla Android. (From MY understanding, I could be wrong, but this is what I was taught).
Get the Desire ROM, or a imitation, and stop requesting..
This was not directed to the thread creator specifically, though it was to people who are requesting widgets. I really wish people could become a little more educated.. unless me myself is wrong.

You can do all this already, or this is what you want to do?
Let me rephrase my earlier question, I think you misunderstood: What can you currently do that you will LOSE by going to the Desire ROM?

Because that's the idea behind the android OS? That everything is modular. Except that in this case HTC sense is a module for home, and not individual modules.
To the OP: If you want corporate usage, I believe it was pulled from the droid rom successfully. I've seen a few posts allude to it around here somewhere.

Well yes, I know that's the idea behind the Android OS, but not everything can be backported, extracted or whatever as easily as people seem to wish or think..

OHHH sorry I thought you asked a different question.
Actually, I wouldn't mind having a complete sense experience - That would be even better.
But I'm a little afraid to flash the entire Desire ROM because it's still experimental.. isn't it?
I'm currently with Cyanogen so it's not the idea of flashing that bothers me, it's just that specific ROM.
Thanks for your reply.

I was just trying to find out if there's a possibility that I wouldn't have to go through this, because all I need is proper exchange support.
Thanks.
Curiosity.
Without a Rooted Incredible I assume I can't install the sensemail.apk on the incredible?
I tried and the app won't install although both are HTC Sense UI's?
Verizon seemed to have downgraded the HTC Mail to only one screen option. I wanted the screen widget that showed the messages in a list not by individual pages where you flip through them to read the headers(single page).
I also tried the extracted widget from the HTC Desire ROM and it didn't want to install. said it was an application error.
Any hints? or just wait for the root?

HTC Apps on CM6

I've had some problems getting HTC apps working in cm6 latest nightly.
I get my apks from DC froyo.
First I tried an easy install which failed.
Then I moved it to the system/app folder and chmod and chowned to make sure the permissions and owners were the same as stock.
Right now the HTC internet browser opens but force closes.
How can I get it working?
Aren't the HTC apps tied to the Sense framework? If so, I don't think it'll be possible to get them working on a non-sense ROM.
I could be completely wrong.

No you are not completely wrong. You are completely correct. Sense is deeply integrated into Android. It's not like there are just some added libraries. The source code that compiles into the framework.jar and framework-res.apk, etc are directly modified by HTC. This means Sense is no mere skin. It is a complete integration into Android. Regardless, without this framework HTC apps will only run on Sense phones. Some can be ported over but it's a difficult process so most likely the apps you want will not be ported over. Out of curiosity though, which apps are you trying to use on CM6?
If you want Sense, go back to Sense.

Use DC.
Can't use HTC apps without Sense. Please check the FAQ in the future.
if you provide the applications you're trying to run, perhaps alternatives can be suggested for you.
I personally like the HTC Tip Calulator widget....
and the HTC Notes....
But you can't use them on adw.
I don't want an app shortcut, I want a widget.
I prefer AOSP thankyou very much.
I just like the option of having some apps that I got used to.
HTC_ime for example. The keyboard.
Even though I use swype.
The camera app which pwns the stock.
Got flashlight and car panel working.
FM radio and weather would be nice too.
There were some nice Widgets but the only one I miss is the clock.
Any porting tips?

i liked the HTC keyboard as well. I'm assuming that you did your due diligence and found this did not work? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7429254#post7429254
4G and FM Radio is not working in CM6 yet.
this is listed in the CM6 OP.
i'm not sure what HTC browser your talking about. perhaps try installing Dolphin HD browser.
last nights CM6 build incorporated a new camera app and deathray (er...Flashlight app w/ widget). just get the nightly build and flash over what you have...i wipe 'cache' and 'dalvik cache' ...you loose no settings.
i use 'MyWeather' but then, i don't care for weather widgets. have you even looked on the android market for this? maybe try browsing from a computer on a site like www.appbrain.com
i use digital clock widget to provide my time date...many folks praise Beautiful Widgets.

tips...
- everyone once in a while...copy a nand backup onto your pc (ie: what if you SD card gets lost or borked?)
- read the entire forum for the ROM you're playing with
- use the search function liberally. (both on xda and google)

Thanks for your post, but.
This isn't about anything specific, i simply want to know how to get apps ported, without the java source.
That said, I AM using dolphin, but I prefer the copy-paste that I can only find with HTC sense, I was hoping the browser on stock sense would help.
I've come across that thread, and use Swype without much issue, but having no trackball () makes me wish I had some arrow keys.. Not available in that thread.
Since my OP I have customized ADW and i'm quite pleased with it overall.
Now I just want to be able to use any app I wish. Regardless of alternatives!
Beautiful widgets is good, but has no analog clocks last I checked.
I do use it either way, but again, this isn't about anything specific.
I want to unlock apk's so they work anywhere. Any rom. Not just with HTC apps, but even the touchwiz apps!
Don't care about 4G, and i know that there are bugs being worked out with CM6 but i'm following it closely. On the 8/11 nightly build right now.
Finally, I read too much. I know a lot more than I put on..
Been "playing" with android roms since Dream (especially CM).
The problem which I have won't be solved by simply looking around for a version of the APK that works.
I want to know how they are being ported/unlocked .
If you can help, then thankyou very much!
Otherwise, I don't need your irrelevant tips. (No offense intended)

try Beautiful widgets, the weather clock is very customizable. costs a couple of bucks, but totally worth it if you miss the clock.
i've tried the azure, but it's almost unusable without htc's stuff (no smart dialer, facebook and twitter integration with contacts)
in my opinion azure is the best.i am getting best performance than any other rom.
i don't miss htc sense ui........i am using better widgets and some twitter and Facebook widgets i manage to get my nostalgic feeling of htc sense..........so my opinion to go for azure rom...........

Froyo offers contact-linking out of the box which basically means any app can add information to your contacts. The official Twitter and Facebook apps synchronize contacts and with 2.2 you can select which ones to link (just like with Sense on 2.1 ROMs).
If you tell me you need Sense for this then I'm quite sure you didn't even try.

Thanks Ali ba for these explanations. I can understand makaze because I also tried a froyo rom, not azure, maybe a couple of months ago and I went back really fast to myprevious rom because I missed exactly these two things, facebook contact sync and smart dialing.
Like makaze , when I saw these problems, I thought it was because the sense absence, and I didnt search a lot for a way around, they just were 2 very important issues. But if you say facebook contacts syncsworks, I wil try azure tomorro!! by the way, does anyone know how to install a smar dialer like htc's? with that it would be just perfect
I like a clean rom, what I need I can install myself, when I buy a Computer, I also format it and reinstall it without the software of the pc maker.

I have same issue such as you , no life without sense !
try zeam launcher
http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/tools/zeam-launcher_guca.html
Syncing with facebook and twitter is working fine here, lets not give out false information to anyone reading this. Facebook integration is supported fine in Azure ROM (and others)!
I am going to give it a try... I guess that if we want to have the last version of android, now and in future releases, we are gonna have to get use to live without htc sense
i've installed both facebook and twitter but haven't really noticed much of an integration (eg. people photos not downloading, unable to browse their albums directly via phone like in htc's friendfeed, see status updates when opening contact...). but then again, the biggest drawback is that there is no smartdialer and i still can't understand why an smartphone operating system does not include this by default (we're not in 2001)

[Q] Apps I can remove if I never want to use sense UI again?

Hello all. I have searched and have found some info on this but not sure if I am missing anything so I wanted to ask. My scenario is basically this.
I have Myn's Warm RLS4 installed on my rooted Evo with Riptides clear froyo V9 theme flashed as well. I do not use sense as my interface at all, I use Launcher pro plus. The only thing I want to keep from sense is the dialer and the applications that allow my facebook pics and info to link to my sense contacts (Friendstream and/or Facebook for HTC sense I believe is responsible for this I believe)
Does anyone have experience in what apps I can remove safely and still keep the social integration provided Sense?
I want to freee up more space for memory and apps as well as not have things load from sense into the memory banks if I am not using them. I see a bunch of sense widgets installed that I will not use anymore so I assume I can remove those, but I am just afraid of losing the contact/social integration that sense provides.
If anyone has done this before and can offer some assistance or maybe a link that I have not found yet I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance for any responses!!

Just FYI, the official Facebook and Twitter apps offer contact integration/syncing. In AOSP it's the way native social integration works. It probably works best on a AOSP ROM and might not even work on a Sense ROM so YMMV.

Thanks for that info. I was not aware that I could achieve the same contact integration functionality with AOSP. I would love to use an AOSP ROM instead but none of them have functioning 4g and 4g in my area is wicked fast so I find it really hard to give up, LOL

Exchange, Froyo or Gingerbear

Hello guys.
Just to share with you my experience (for what it worths).
Exchange with Froyo: works charmly
(I tried under stock ROM, Android Revolution HD - 4G 3.3, LeeDrOiD HD v2.2.3 )
Exchange with Gingerbear: doesn't work !
(I tried under Android Revolution HD - 4G 4.0 beta4, LeeDrOiD HD 2.3.4 Beta, RCMix HD v5.9.1 Blazingly Beaming GingerBread)
What it happen is this: no way to connect to Exchange server. I then complete Exchange setup under WiFi, anyhow connection and/or security certificate errors do arise on when I shift to mobile network.
It would be interesting to see if there are differences among different version of Email.apk of Froyo vs. Gingerbear.
See you !
Ciao
I am running CM7.0.2 on my DHD, since i updated to Gingerbread my exchange wasnt working properly with the native email.apk, the setup was ok but the app stopped receiving mail randomly and required a phone reboot. Eventually i installed touchdown.
Hopefully that since the final gingerbread for DHD has been leaked maybe someone can get the mail app from that one and make it available for flashing.
Sorry...just wanted to say...Gingerbear? lol!
Works perfect!
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Maybe it's a stupid question: I was reading this:
http://laur.ie/blog/2010/09/exchange-2010-sp1-sync-with-android-froyo/
Could it be possible to pick Email.apk from Froyo and overwrite the same in Gingerbear ?

Well...I'll try..I cross my finger
It works with CoreDroid !

It took a while, several attempts, but at the end it works !
I personally had to use enhanced email to make it work
market.android.com/details?id=com.qs.enhancedemail
The app is quite pricey but works OK, I still have some issues with sync, but don't need to reboot or anything like that.
