[Q] MS exchange: don't sync email, only contacts/calendar? - Galaxy S I9000 General

hi,
i'm new to the i9000 and android, just received my phone a week ago. i have an unlocked european version (amazon.de) and it came with firmware JM1. i didn't upgrade to anything else yet, i'm waiting for stable froyo.
i want to automatically sync my corporate exchange calendar but i need to disable the email sync (not allowed to store corp email on the phone). i've searched the forum but didn't find anything related.
some colleagues use a htc desire where they have a setting/checkbox "sync email" (or similar naming) in the account settings whereas i can only find "sync contacts" and "sync calendar".
is this feature missing in the SGS? does some beta froyo user have an exchange account and is this option available in newer firmwares?
thanks,

go into Settings, Accounts & Sync
make sure all the green boxes are checked
sync calendar
sync email
sync contacts

thanks for your anwser!
i posted my message because i don't have this "sync email" option on my phone which i want to disable:
"accounts and sync:"
=> background data & auto-sync are checked
"manage accounts": clicking on my exchange account:
"data & synchronisation"
=> only "sync contacts" and "sync calendar" are here, both are checked. i guess here should be a "sync email" menu where i could disable it?
i did set "email check frequency" (account settings, general settings) to "never", but this does not do what i want (still checks my email if i click on the email app)
best regards,

I would also like to sync only contacts via Exchange.

Exchange Sync features in Android 2.1 OS is quite limited. Hence each phone manufacturers have to make their own email exchange support client. HTC's client is certainly better than what Samsung offered. Motorola also has its own client as well.
The email app in SGS only supports up to 2 exchange accounts max and is very slow syncing emails as well as missing a lot of features.
Ironically, one of the *new* features highlighted by Google in Froyo OS is Exchange Calendar sync support. So it seems even the Exchange calendar sync is not directly supported by 2.1 OS.

@AllGamer
you mentioned your "sync email" setting. may i ask which firmware you are using? maybe we are lucky and this feature is in more recent versions than my stable JM1.
i'm still hoping that the froyo firmware contains a good exchange client
anyone with JPC + exchange here?

No Exchange push mail support after all?!

I bought the phone because it was supposed to have Exchange Activesync support, which i believe is by default a push solution, where new e-mail, contacts and calender appointments are automatically pushed as they are received/created.
However, after setting up the the Exchange account on HTC Legend, the default option was to sync ever 15 minutes ?! That is not push at all!
I then manually changed the option to "sync as items arrive", which by normal logic should be push. However, when this option is turned on, it seems the phone is continuously looping through e-mail, contacts and calendar, communicating over the network all the time. At least that is what it looks like from the animations on the sync screen.
That is NOT what push mail should be - such behaviour would suck out the battery life real quick.
So does anyone here know, is the push mail thing on HTC LEgend just a hoax or what is going on ?!?
Enabling the "sync as items as arrive" should have done the trick. However in some cases it's also necessary to enable the "Data Roaming" option. Have you tried enabling Data roaming?
ps.
I use the default Exchange support as well as Moxier mail to sync two Exchange server accounts. I use Push mail for both accounts and it works flawlessly.
This is a old topic but if it really doesn't work out, try with the stock AOSP/CM6.1 Email.apk instead of HTC's Mail.apk
Reads as "Automatic (Push)" in the settings

Have you looked in settings/accounts and sync under manage accounts ther should be gmail sync. select that and ther should be 3 tabs for contacts, mail and calendar. make sure all are selected. toggling any off then on will do an immedite sync.
Don't know about exchange as I don't use it. does that show as well?
I have under manage accounts - pc sync which works, google which works and twitter which does not work on contacts. comes up with a sync error.
have you tried to compose email using exchange activesync... there is no option to select GAL..... man dell sucks
so, after a lot of google'ing, it seems that android 2.1, without carrier modification to allow exchange cal sync, is missing the option.
exchange cal sync is only available in 2.2
all the more reason why I desperately need 2.2

[Q] Multiple Google Calendar Sync

I have 4 different google calendars... Birthdays, Class Schedule, Assignments, and my regular personal Calendar. I want to be able to sync all of the calendars with WP7 but everywhere i've looked says it can only be done by syncing the calendars to outlook, then syncing outlook to the phone.
Has anyone figured out a way to do this without syncing it to Outlook? I already have an Outlook calendar for work and merging the two and not being able to differentiate them would just be a big mess...
Setup a google mail account (for each account of course)
Go in those accounts to settings > sync settings > and tick the option "calendar" where you will also find the option for mail and contacts
All the calendar items will appear in the calendar of WP7. Or at least, this is how it works for me
Edit:
Somebody might put some additional notes to this, as i have no idea if the calendar that is used is automatically the outlook calendar?
depends on if u haave a google account for home and another for school like some colleges use the google apps domain to host their email and calendar ervvices you can set this up by going to settings email and accounts then add an account hit google and enter your full email and password even though it says username that threw me off the first time too so im just telling you now

[q] want to migrate to android, but want to keep hotmail (full html) please help!!!

I am tires of WINMO 6.5, and WP7 is not what I want. The only thing is that I can't give up my hotmail, and NO I don't want POP3 version, and the exchange trick won't show me attachments..... not html etc.
I want hotmail to behave like any an regular email client.
As of now this is how I am setup on winmo 6.5:
1. PH#s (contacts with PH#s) + Calendar = Gmail, synced via microsoft exchange (I do this because I use Google voice)
2. Email (Hotmail) + Email contacts - synced via windows live email client
Any advise will be greatly appreciated. Also... I would like to combine somehow all my contacts in one directory that will be synced somehow between gmail (for google voice texts and calls) and hotmail (since I use this all over my PC's and add contacts from different locations. Can I do all this and use ANDROID?? Please help!! Thank you!!! - Peter
lol you already have the right parts. Just finish adding your contacts to Gmail. Sign in to your Gmail account as your Google account on your Android phone and you can automatically sync your Google calendar and Google contacts. You can even auto sync your contacts so that as soon as they're in your phone they'll be added to your contacts. If you're worried about all your email only contacts showing up in your dialer, then you usually have the option to only show contacts with phone numbers.
Gmail (as with most e-mail clients) supports HTML.
You've just reminded me what a PITA WM6.5 was. It was workaround after workaround to get the last workaround to work. There's a reason Microsoft dumped the old "Windows Mobile" name and start fresh. 6.5 compared to ANY modern smartphone software is just dumb. Sorry for the rant, I think I was getting flashbacks @[email protected]
In Gmail you can add your hotmail, yahoo and others through an interface(PC only). When you have your gmail account open in a browser(PC) click the gear in the upper right corner and select mail settings. Then select accounts and imports tab and it's the second option. Super easy as I have done it. As for mail, there is a @mail app built into android. Just google hotmail android and you'll find pop3/imap/exchange settings everywhere. And I do believe that @email android app is HTML viewable.
There is no reason at this point to keep that old 6.5 phone, jump over to Android and you'll totally forget you ever had a lesser phone.
But.. still if I add Hotmail via exchange, it wont let me view attachments... Pop3 is not the way to go, since is not a complete sync with the server (I check Hotmail from different PC's and add/remove contacts constantly. Pop3 won't sync that)

So does this mean I will switch from Hotmail? And when I reply to an email received at hotmail will show my gmail as sender? Again, I don't want to switch from hotmail. All I want is an "email client" for android that fully suports hotmail with 2 way sync. I hope you understand.
P.S. looks like my post shows up twice. How do I delete the other one?
Thank you you guys for your help!!!
I believe "Enhanced Email" for Android does what you're looking for. It can use Exchange ActiveSync and has an option for HTML email.
Also, if you want to sync Gmail and Hotmail contacts, try Soocial.

[Q] Email Configuration Questions

Hi There!
I want to configure my wife's Defy so she can get email from her gmail account.
I don't want it to be pop3, as I don't want to remove any of the messages from her gmail account, as she also gets her email via pop3 on her Desktop Outlook?
I see 2 different gmail options on her phone, is it an option to get some form of sync'd account or perhaps is Imap the only other option?
Cheers
You might have to enable IMAP in your Gmail account preferences, but you can also use POP3 and configure it to not delete the messages on the server.
Also from my experience the default mail application works better than the gmail one which is slow and doesn't always show latest messages to me.

Yah I am finding it hard to believe there isn't some form of activesync syncing option.
