Who is your Carrier? - Touch CDMA General

When you flash your phone with a generic build, do you install your carrier CAB? Even if you don't - who IS your carrier?

Hey Nu,
I am moving this thread to General as it serves no real purpose in dev. If you are trying to make a metric of who uses what carrier, just make it Generic... it will be easier on you

Well, I am keeping it carrier generic, but I figure if I have lots of Sprint users like myself, then I can always put out a Sprint Specific one, or multiple specifics, since it doesn't take TOO much time.
No problem relocating the thread. Sorry, I wasn't thinking when I posted it!
Nu

I have yet to install any carrier CABs simply because they all seem to just 'work'.
I am with Bell (Canada).

The biggest issue comes with MMS and Internet. If you are not using any of these, you will see no difference regardless of the carrier that you use.
Edit: The PRL comes in the carrier cab, so my statement above is only half right...

HTC magic e911 update rootable

i just recently got a htc magic with the e911 update just wondering is this is rootable ?
I'm just wondering, have you searched?
Answer is No.
Ok so I got my shiney new HTC Magic from rogers, for f*cking free thanks to that deal that enabled dream owners to get the magic for free. I harassed for a month an a half. But I am loving it, I'm using it as my main phone. But I can't find anything on rooting the new update for the damn thing. Is there even a name for this update. I'm glad I signed that waiver for dream owners. Cuz if I did it for the dream, I would have a useless peice of ****. So as the first guy asked, where is the root?
I have search and i am unable to find a straight answer.

Straight answer: No.
If the update becomes rootable, it would be clear.
but I red that there was a work around like we have to make sure we have the same radio as the new update so like that rogers won't know we are rooted users and dont get the data cut off is that true or it's just bogus?

You need a rooted phone to get the work around. If you update to the newest update then there is no point in trying this loophole since you have the newest SPL and radio that they want you to have.
The newest update is not rooted.
If you have a Rogers Magic with the new update and ARE NOT using it in Canada on Rogers (ex: in US on ATT), can you change the ROM to a rooted ROM or am I just SOL on Wifi Tether?

That doesn't make much sense -- if the newest updated ROM (1.76.0010 for ROGERS) is not rooted, what makes you think you can change the ROM if your not in Canada? It's still the same unrooted SPL.
If you try using WiFi tethering, you are going to get billed up the ying yang with charges with roaming and tethering charges if you don't have a tethering package.

That is what I was asking, just didn't phrase it right. I've switched to 32A Magic from a MT3G to have 3G bands for AT&T. So far not impressed with this Rogers ROM, almost makes me want to deal with EDGE again just so I can use a ROM that I like. Thanks for your answer.

No problem. Just make sure you watch out for the tethering, heard some bad stories with ROGERS + tethering.
There are so many topics about this now.. you'd think Rogers would do something about it.
What could Rogers possibly benifit from "locking" this phone like this. Kinda takes away from the 'open-sourceness' of the device.

ROGERS just wants you to have their ROM with their applications. That is really all it's about. ROGERS says "we have to test out updates to see if they work with our network" but we all know it's bulls--t; you can flash any ROM and you still receive phone calls, SMS, MMS, internet and still get 3G with no additional billing or problems with your phone.
All they really want is to lock you down so you can't unlock your phone (therefore taking your phone to other providers). You bought the phone from ROGERS, ROGERS wants everyone to know that you are with ROGERS.
Im pretty sure HTC are the ones who locked it when they made this firmware update. Rogers didnt make the update.

Not really, it was probably at Rogers request. If carriers are going to do stuff like that (which they are entitled to), then HTC or Google should make unbranded versions available for people who want the phone, but aren't on that network.

ROGERS is the only one to have the 1.76.0010 SPL for a reason; paid for the SPL and branding on the ROM. They keep implimenting newer systems to try and block out non-ROGER ROMs. They want to lock it down, HTC didn't have to, they have no reason to.
You know what, come to think if it, ROGERS probably knows about the .29 kernal bypass for rooting and are reluctant to update to the newer kernal.
Food for thought!

It only works with the 2.6.29 kernel and it's a slim chance of it happening -- It's basically just brute-forcing root access. Magic 32A has the 2.6.27 kernel and does not have this bug allowing root access.

there must be some change or why would they post it dated 15/03/10 ???

there is no changelog from htc's site. it's just a small "updated" t-mo uk ROM, still based on the very first 1.43 ROMs. i wont call it an update at all. FYI, this so called update has been made available in xda for a long time now. i've downloaded it and compared the Hash, and they are 100% identical.
omg!
if this is the update i've waited 3 months for then heads are gonna roll!
is it actually the exact same rom as before?
what the hell was the point in it?

It's not even an update. Its the exact same version number that I have on my original ROM T-Mobile HD2 - ROM Version:1.43.110.2.
And yes, I still have my original ROM. It works okay for what I do, and want to stick with official ROMs if possible. Maybe in the future if T-Mobile don't give a real update, or I hit serious issues, but for now I'd like to keep my warranty intact. I'm aware I can re-flash it easily back to the original ROM (even more so now that ROM is officially available to download) - however my concern is over times when I get a fault which means I cannot re-flash it.
i'm on the original t-mobile rom and find it suitable. the only real change ive made is to revert back to the windows messaging set up, not htc messages.
how many people on the original rom have had problems with HTC messaging?
The disclaimer says:
* This is a generic software update. Any additional software or settings provided by your mobile operator or company will be lost. If you require this customization, please contact your supplier first before upgrading.
This may 'unlock' t-mobile from their current position and allow them the HTC rom upgrade path.
Has anyone tried this?

Interesting point, however I suspect it's a standard disclaimer they put onto their ROM downloads. Would be interesting though for someone to confirm?
Well, someone try and download it using their S/N and try flashing. Worst that happens is it says 'Incorrect Vendor ID'

I don't even want to think what the reaction on there is going to be once they actually announce it.
Ah, no, they'll mark it as solved, and no-one will be able to post! Good stuff, eh?
I tried it just incase it was generic but that was a a massive waste of time, as far as I can see this rom is identical to the factory version.

Well I asked a question earlier today about receiving an HD2 and wanting to know how i find out if its a TMO usa version. There is no TMO branding on the phone, but when i start it up with my TMO sim in it..it says choose network. I have a choice of TMO or something else..dont remember..started with a T i think.....So..what version phone do I have ..and why was my thread deleted? in the first place. I think I have a legit question.
thankyou
settings tab - about phone - hardware info-flash size.
if it says 1024 its a tmous however more direct hints are.... is it from t mobile usa? does it have red and green start and end buttons? if no, then its not.
yeah ok it says flash size is 512. So this isnt a Tmo usa version. It was given to me today from someone at HTC, so i didnt know what version it is...so it works with my TMO sim..but no 3g I assume....
So is there a serial number or something so I can find out exactly what model I have?
thankyou

look in the back of the phone, if it doesnt have the nextG/Telstra branding below the battery cover, then it's a T8585. If it does, then it's a T9193. And like others have said, TmoUS version has a big-ass T-mobile logo right below the earphone with green/red call/hang-up buttons (not to mention flash size of 1024MB).

Goodbye G2

Unfortunately I have to say goodbye to my G2. I haven't had it very long and I couldn't even use it for its full potential but after about 4 hours each day a lot of reading and a lot of trial and error I think my device has an issue.
My G2 was unlocked with an unlock code and I've tried doing everything to get it to work on another network however I've failed. Now its time I move my G2 onto someone else who either lives in the states or well you know the rest.
It was a solid device - except for the annoying hinge.

I don't understand what you are saying at all. First you say you can't get connected to the network. Then you say it works, but not with 4G speed since your carrier doesn't support it. Sounds like a carrier issue, not a device issue.
Just making a call or sending a text (using any non T-Mob SIM) will verify the phone is SIM unlocked (you can just text yourself to test). To get the data to work (if it isn't), you may need to manually enter APN settings into the phone. That's what I had to do to get the data working on the US AT&T network using a Bell Canada branded Desire Z.
There have been a lot of problems with unlocking the Vision, particularly the G2, using unlock codes.
Much better is the "gfree" method which is free and doesn't need any codes entered. It also gives you some other useful stuff, like full radio S-OFF, as well as SIM unlock. Several people had big problems with their phones after using unlock codes, and that was sorted via gfree. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=855764

Could you give some examples of the problems people were having with their phones after unlocking with a code?
I've unlocked my Desire Z to work on Rogers with an unlock code, and I have some concerns about my phone now. I'm not sure if they're issues related to unlocking, or just functionality limits of the phone itself.
Thanks.

Sorry if I confused you. Let me explain the issue I'm having, when I put my carrier SIM card into the device it asks me to put a SIM card in the phone and it will say "Emergency Mode", the part where I said "It works but it doesn't have the "4G" like speeds was a previous response to the thread where someone asked me if it worked on my carrier and thats why I said "It works but it doesn't have 4G like speeds".
I don't think its carrier because I've asked a few people on HowardForums and they did the GFREE method and loaded a custom ROM onto the device and it still didn't work.
I'm going to go and get some service on my account and I will see if it works - maybe it isn't working because I don't have service?

[Q] When can we get the OFFICIAL 8107 update from AT&T

Hi guys,
Does any body know when can we get the OFFICIAL 8107 update for the AT&T Focus?
But without changing the operator,
I mean official from ATT, please advise,
Thanks in advance
Best Regards

I'm in New Zealand with an AT&T focus, I got that update two weeks ago I think, maybe longer.

If you have the phone from AT&T then your ROM carrier is AT&T and you will get the 8107 update when AT&T releases it. That does NOT depend on the current carrier. Your phone's IMEI is in the AT&T database, so when Zune checks for update it looks in your phone in the registry for the OEM carrier, which is AT&T. There are ways to change that in the registry, if you're interop unlocked. Read here.

I know all what you are talking about, I'm pro,
I think it is better to wait for the official ATT update than changing the registry, may be ATT has different and better radio version,

I think it is better to waiti,

No problem, glad to assist as we're here to help.
I wouldn't bet on AT&T update being better . Actually, if anything, the AT&T updates have "worse" numbers for Radio (and not only) compared to the Rogers, as you can see in several places across the forum, for example here.
Shortly:
Radio Software version: 2103.11.8.1 (AT&T)
Radio software version: 2124.11.9.3 (Rogers)
However, AT&T seem to mod the ROM specific for their network, and while that might be good locally, I doubt it's good overall. But I can't really tell...

Wait?
Waiting for ATT is like waiting for world peace. Good luck with that. I normally wait for the carrier updates but did not with 7720 or 8107. I used the cab sender method, not the registry change method. In either case, you are getting updates off the Microsoft servers.
Thanks for the clarification,
I think I'll change the registery to my operator Vodafone Egypt and get the update

to be honest with you, I don't trust this method,
flashing a ROM or updating via Zune is preferred,
any way thanks for reminding
sounds like those guys at AT&T don't care about the updates I emailed them about it this what i got back
"I have reviewed your account and the most recent software update was released on 09/27/2011. This was the Windows 7.5 update. If you select settings on your device then phone, it will show you which Windows version you are running. When updates come out for your device, notification will be sent to your phone advising you to update your phone. Unfortunately we are not notified in advance of when new updates are coming out. You can also contact Microsoft at 1-800-642-7676."

This response is not that ATT does not care, it's that they are the last to be notified of updates and the last to know if they are actually going to push the update out; sometimes they wait and skip over an update to have a more significant release. They will not divulge any information until the update is actually released. The only way they will give any hints of an update is if there was a major flaw or demand that customers were looking for ie mango has multitasking custom ringtones, nodo copy and paste. There has been multiple handset receiving official 8107 updates. ATT although the premier carrier for WP7 probably will either wait for the next apollo update or release 8107 offical update about 2 to 4 weeks after the other major carriers (T-mobile) release theres. The reason is they usually incorporate ATT specific features or software with the microsoft update and that ATT is slow in pretty much everything they do haha. You can update with official 8107 update by branding your carrier to rogers through registry edit for the samsung focus. I do not like using cab sender method either.
well i'll wait for them to release it because last time i edited the registry i had install the 7004 roms
