Good bye G1 - G1 General

Sadly I discovered my old trusty G1 behind my dresser and found it in a bad condition. The screen is shattered and the hinge is off. This phone has served me good for the past two years but now I am looking forward to the G2.
Anyone else is also looking forward to getting the G2?

I'm VERY excited about the G2! If you wanna get rid of that old beat up G1, message me!

Good bye everyone.

This will be my last post made in the herald section. Why? Because my wing was recently washed and died. I plan on just getting a TP2, so no more wing for me. Im gonna miss our small community and all you guys. I just figure it would make more since to jsut upgrade to a more up to date and more powerful device. Once again goodbye, and keep the wing whooping these newer phones ass! Please keep this section alive.
had to chime in, I just posted my goodbye message too, my wing got washed as well. I am going to get a TP2 as well, when it comes out.. using the G1 now, I never knew just how slow the wing was.

Such a great phone

I love this phone. It is so fast, everything about it is just so quick. Coming from a tp2 its like night and day. This is my first android device and I know I made a really good decision switching OS's.
Anyone on the fence about this phone dont be, its amazing..
Rock on nexus one users...
the phone is great and all, i own a nexus myself. after using it a couple weeks im desperately in need of a switch to a hd2. its different for everyone i guess
The best phone ever. Simple. I wish everything was enabled and I wish it didn't have problems but hey... its the best phone I've ever owned. And this is my 13th phone. again like the op said, if you're on the fence about this phone just pull the trigger and buy it. You won't regret it.

I look forward to your comparative review of the N1 vs. HD2.
I agree, the phone is awesome. There are a few little annoyances but I think I'm still getting used to it.
I never was a big fan of candy bars, but... This phone is sexy. My Dream has everything, does everything that I would ever need. But, this thing is fast, and realllllly pretty.
This is the nicest phone out until the HD3 hits the market.
Congrats to us all, for being the coolest people in our respective rooms.

G2 to MyTouch 4G?

I have had the G2 for two weeks now (first Android phone) and while I dig the phone, I never use the hardware keyboard like I thought I would (Swype is excellent). My camera hardware button doesn't work and Tmo said that I need to send it in for a new one, and the guy said that he would give me the MyTouch 4G if I wanted it. It's tempting since I don't use the keyboard. Any ideas? I know that the G2 is more stock version of Android compared to Sense on the Mytouch, but I like the idea of the slimmer phone. It looks like both have ROMs being developed.
All I can tell you is that I went through five MyTouch4Gs to realize that there are numerous issues with them. I encountered creaking/squeaking buttons and a washed-out display, others have experienced cracked bezels, dust under the display, FFC not centered and more. I really, really wanted to enjoy that phone, but after going through five of them I gave up on it, and went with the G2. Best decision I've made on a phone. Never did I think I would need or use the physical keyboard, but now that I've had it for a few weeks I now use it all the time. It's a wonderful keyboard, and I have no regrets going from the MT4G to the G2.
My advice to you would be to do some homework in the MT4G sections of XDA, to see what others have to say about it. Lots of problems for many, not all, and the one other thing that sucked about that phone is the lack of ROM development. It finally started picking up steam when I got my G2, but it's still nothing compared to the ROM development being done on a daily basis for the G2.
Excellent, thanks for the help. One thing I keep thinking about is how long folks hung onto their G1, and I dig the build quality of the phone too.

Downgrade from G2 to CLIQ

I thought I would share this with those of you on here who are nerdy enough to appreciate.
I got the g2 shortly after it came out, upgrading from the horrendous motorola cliq, which was an upgrade from the original G1 that I had lost in cab. The CLIQ was an experience that convinced me never to get a motorola phone again. For those of you not in the loop (consider yourself very lucky/smart) - the cliq launched with android 1.5 and motorola promised an update to 1.6 - then they said they were working on 2.0 - then 2.1. After literally 9 months of delays and promises and delays they still hadn't released 2.1 and we were still on 1.5 missing out on all the new apps. The dev community was tiny with HandlerExploit and TravisJames doing the rom work and a few sharp guys who rooted the phone and moved on to greener pastures. So i naturally jumped at the chance to get a new device on t-mobile - and the g2 with its "stock android" (and therefore easy updates and potentially more devs) pulled me in more than the vibrant/galaxy s. In retrospect, the only reason time to get a new handset is when cyanogen himself gets it.
Since getting the G2 I've devoted hours to scouring the forums, trying the latest patches and hacks before we had root, installing roms, increasing performance, comparing quadrants with my colleagues with nexus ones and droids, modding, modding, hacking, my g2 was hacked to shreds and put back together by this community into something more than just a phone - it was a powerhouse of AWESOMENESS. in between bouts of g2, i had rooted, hijacked and installed Liberty on my girlfriends droid x. Then I did it again - at my friends bar during a 30 minutes chat about how slow some random guy's droid x. I was officially addicted to the root.
Its worth noting that when I got the g2 I thought about going Office Space on the cliq. Taking it out back and beating the **** out of its evil motorola guts - but I was too happy with the g2 to care about how awful motorola and the cliq had been. In fact I had largely forgotten about my cliq until a few weeks ago when I found it push way back in a shelf. While doing some spring cleaning in my apartment I found the cliq hidden away behind a keyboard and my dreaded tax files. As I was cleaning, I avoided my girl friends death stare and kept that old hateful piece of **** cliq - there was something telling me that it had a place - that despite its evil of motoblur and bootloader bull**** there was redemption to be had for that briq of a phone. I was not ready to say goodbye to the CLIQ - no matter how evil its maker was, it was still a droid at heart.
Then my G2 broke last Sunday. The screen just wigged out and started showing black and white lines. I could still receive phone calls due to turning on the "trackbutton to accept" option in cm7 but that was it. So there I was, with a broken G2 - no ball and chain to the office email, no constant facebook messages, no calls from my girl asking me to pick up a bottle of wine when i'm a block from her place, no text messages interrupting my dinners, but most of all, no phone to flash nightlies and mod - I was understandably a total mess.
I went to the t-mobile store first thing on Monday - they said it was manufacturing defect and accepted the phone without issue. However, they wouldn't give me a new one on the spot - i would have to wait till corporate mailed me a new one.
I went home, dejected, wanted to throw on my headset and listen to pandora - but with no g2 to pair it to. But in the midst of sorrow, I saw the CLIQ. The path to redemption had begun. I went to work - scouring the old forums and Handler Exploits simply-android site. By the end of the evening I was running Cyanogen Mod 6 and had that thing overclocked to a gut wrenching 768 mghz - about half of what my g2 was running at. I stripped down the system/app and system/lib getting rid of every unnecessary app to get the sluggish system to go faster. Finally i was surfing, texting, checking facebook - without wanting to break the damn phone in half.
I ran a quadrant on it today: 362. Not 3620 tegra zone scores - not the 2800 i was pulling on the g2 - no this was 362 MOTO BRIQ scores. My colleague here at the office whose OG Droid is running CM thanks to me is running angry birds and I can barely get Maps to run without lag. I feel like i've gone from a Ferrari to a Model T - but hey, I can still make phone calls and post to FB. I just hope that and my girl's droid x will be enough android to get by till Monday.
Nice story! I feel your pain. There's a Cliq xt waiting to serve backup duty in the event that my G2 meets an early demise. If I ever need to put it into service, rooting will be a necessary step.

Nice read, and my condolences on your loss Hopefully they overnight that RMA to you ASAP.
Before the G2, I was using a $20 prepaid phone right off the shelf. I was super frugal and never thought it would be worth it to dish out the extra coin for the data plan. There's no ****ing going back now.
Excellently composed! I believe you have summed up the feelings most of the community here! I hope you get your replacement back as soon as possible! I too had a dreaded briq, divorced it for a MyTouch 1.2 and arrived here at the G2. Unfortunately I have no backup phone.. All my old devices move to greener pastures where less the less tech savvy roam.

I do feel your pain! I recently traded my Vibrant for my G2, and as I had no previous trade history on XDA, I had to send my phone first. The week with my cliq xt was interesting! First thing I did was rooted it and got 2.1 running on it. It still wouldn't play Angry Birds, but it was enough droid to get me through the week.
Thanks for the story. I have a Cliq too, which I finally got tired of in January and picked up a G2. If it wasn't for the devs like HandlerExploit, Travis James, toxigenicpoem, J_r0dd, adlx, sudoadam, kb7sqi, and others, I would have dumped it long before. Most of the devs were walking away from it, so I figured it was time to move on. Although I follow csolanol, br3ttu, and ngiordano on Twitter and see they are still working hard on it, getting CM ported over (CM4Morrison).
Motorola really screwed up on that device. Worse off though are the international Cliq users and the CliqXT users. They're stuck on 1.5. What a debacle.
I chose the G2 specifically because of the manufacturer and the dev support. Will probably be running this device for some time, love it.

If this phone dies, my backup is an old Palm Centro. And if that fails, it's back to the Samsung D407. So, I take *really* good care of this phone.

I had my N1 stolen a month ago, and now I'm on my old TyTN 2, with android flashed onto it. Can't wait to pick up my new DZ when I go to the states next month. It's already at home waiting for me.
To round out this story...
I just sold that CLIQ for $100.
You're lucky you've even got that. If my G2 ever breaks and I can't send it in, I'm stuck with an old Samsung T349. But that was a pretty good story there.

As someone who's been looking to get rid of his Cliq XT but never got around to it, you're a more forgiving man than I. haha
my wife and i both have g2s, the spare is the new motorola cliq in the closet lol
Heh, my Cliq is in my night stand collecting dust. I haven't touched it since I got my G2 about four months ago.
I may break it out though as the guys over at Simply Android have ported over CM7 for it. Curious to see how it runs.
Wow. That story almost matches mine. My G1 crapped out on me, the dev community for the Cliq is tiny at best (with Handler and j_r0dd doing all the work), but my G2 still works and I abuse the f--k out of it. I was thinking of getting either the G2x or the Sidekick 4G next.
Oh, I still use the Cliq...just to make sure my laptop can still read Motorola devices.

Hello All!

Well I just wanted to say Hello and Introduce myself I have been in the Android scene for a little while now With my HTC ARIA Before that I had a dual boot Win Mo and Android on my HTC Fuze. Both great phones and mad with really good quality. Tomorrow I am going to pick up a Dell Streak since Best Buy mobile only has it for $50 with new 2yr agreement. Can't pass that deal up. So I will hopefully be more frequent on this fourm like I used to back in my Fuze day. I can't wait to have that big azz phone in my hands tomorrow. It's going to be awesome!
You're going to love it.
Best phone I have ever had!

fyi, there's a dell sreak syndrom effect and currently there's no cure yet. Once you get hooked to the massive 5" screen you don't want to go back to anything smaller and currently there is no similar screen size phone in the market. You're warned !!! You'll love it and enjoy it !!!
See my signature for some Streak references.
Welcome.
Hello!!!! Welcome to the club!
well I got the Dell Streak today. I fell in love with it at first site. Most people that I showed it to gave me a "HOLY ****, That's a phone" answer. . Updated it to 2.2 and it is a lot cooler. I miss the tablet setup from the 1.6 but oh well. I will most likley root it one of these days but I am going to play with it for a couple days just to get used to it. Moving from an super small HTC aria to this huge phone will take a little getting used to but man it's so much better than any phone I have ever had!
Welcome. I just got my used Streak 5 about a week ago. It's the best phone for the money I could have ever hoped to get, particularly for what I paid used.
It has a few minor cosmetic issues, but the screen and every functional component make me glad I bought it.
I got rid of the Stage UI and switched to ADW launcher and the Ray dialer, as I found the default dialer horrendously ugly, and I'm super pleased.
You'll have a great time.
'em in luv with my streak tooo.
got my streak some cloths from here, l00king sexier.:]

i have 2 questions :
1. is outterbox commutter worth buying, right now m having skins on it from above link (m really confused on this one , as buying outter box and getting it shipped to my country india will probably make the cost to 40+ $.)
2. How bestbuy gives a 300+$ device for 5$ , is it kinda contract like at&t or something?
