[Q] HD2 Android RAM utilization - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I was reading this thread and a question popped on my mind: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765578
As the thread suggests that ramsize is set to 0x1e400000 for fullram builds. In decimal, that would be 507510784 bytes or 484MB (1k=1024). As we know, HD2 has 576MB RAM.
Q1: Why didn't we use more than 484MB while we have 576MB?
Q2: In WM6.5, 128MB is reserved for GPU. Does android not need this reservation? When 484MB is used, there is only 92MB left for reserved use.

Well, HD2 Android is based on WinMo IMHO.

I think Android runs independently and has different memory allocation. On WM6.5, the program memory allocated is only 448MB if I'm not wrong. It's quite different from the Android that we use in these HD2.

afaik, android is NOT based on winmo. it actually needs winmo to initialize some hardware. android is not emulated or run under winmo!
winmo and android surely will have different and independent MMUs.
or am i wrong?

Android uses the full 576 assuming a radio that unlocks it. The problem is that as it doesn't run from NAND, it currently loads it's file from the SDCard into memory. The "loss" of memory isn't lost so much as used by the OS itself as running space.

I didn't know radio ROM has something to do with the RAM. This is new to me.
Wrathlon, you're saying that we are using 484MB because the rest of 92MB has to load Android from the SD?

wm5or6 on ipaq rz1710

hi guys i'm new... i was told about the forum from a friend..
after a research on the forum i've got an ananswered question...
it's possible to install wm5 or 6 on ipaq rz1710??
thank you
i'm sorry if there is another similar question but i haven't find anything using seach function
No, there is absolutely no way to do this.
rz1710 have only 32mb of RAM memory.
WM 5.0 and WM 6.0 needs more memory, because it is using new memory system.
For example on WM 2003 SE I have 63mb RAM memory, but on WM 5.0 only 49mb RAM.
32 - 14 = 18mb
In other words, you will have 2-5 free memory for programs.
thank you guys..

[Android] Expert Hrlp, Please

I would consider myself one who just knows enough to be dangerous when ut comes to installing android on my WM6.1 phone. I have tried multiple versions of android releases but all seem to run slower than desired and I always end up back with WM.
Anyone with experience: which version would you recommend for my phone. Below are the specs. And, by the way, I'm still using the haret.exe; once I finally find a well-working platform, I'll do a full install.
Phone specs:
HTC Touch (verizon: VX6900)
WM 6.1 Prof
CE OS 5.2.19212 (Build 19212.1.0.3)
Processor: MSM7500-400MHz
Memory: 105.13 MB
4GB SD Card
I want a version that runs smoothly on my system and doesn't lag or freeze like a PC from 1992.
Thanks!!

If you want something smooth to use everyday, use one of Plemen's themed donut builds. Or you could even go back to one of the Ion builds. They all work fine.
SenseHero or Tattoo could also work, albeit a bit slower, but more flashy.
I'm currently running a themed build of 2.0.1 from the Kaiser forum.
+1 for Plemen's donut builds - they are all solid as a rock and speedy. They are faster than WM for me, but I am running NAND which is faster.
I got this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=591104 installed on my Sprint Touch and I'm liking it so far. I might actually try flashing it sometime.
The one thing you didn't include in your stats is one of the most important stats for the speed of your haret experience, that is the speed of your SD card.
If you have a fast card (class 6) most of these builds will run well with a haret boot.
If you have a slower card, loading the build onto your NAND will increase your speed and stability substantially.
I would also recommend one of Plemen's donut builds for speed and stability.
Now, here's my second question: In my many attempts with different versions (from what I've read), something changed in my google account where I can't access/download unsigned versions of programs. Is there any way to overcome this without changing my google/gmail login??

Do you mean you can't download apps from the market? (Or at least that you have a limited selection?). If so I would suggest the Market Enabler.
And I agree with the previous posters, thus far Plemen's Donut builds have proven to be the most fast and stable. My preference would lie in his HeroBlend build, if only because I like the darker theme.
Plemen's HeroBlend build
Plemen's Eclair Themed build
Also, this Tattoo build looks really nice, and runs quite fast if you delete the Rosie.apk after starting it up. Too bad it's too big to fit in NAND though, at least for now.
I downloaded market enabler, but I still have missing apps...I've read bits and pieces throughout the net that copy protection on certain files is prohibiting me from downloading them.
Oh, and by the way...the recommended build is working VERY well

If you mean you want non-market apps, go to settings>applications> and allow unknown sources.

My Legend has less RAM than stated. System info: RAM: 291 MB ROM: 185 MB

Hi all,
I notices something really weird today. I have installed a couple of System Info applications from Market (Android System Info, Quick System Info) on my Legend and these apps are displaying the same thing:
RAM: 291 MB
ROM: 185 MB
Official HTC Specs:
RAM: 384 MB
ROM: 512 MB
WTF??
Did someone else noticed this on Legend too?
I also tried another sys info app called Device Information. It states "Total Usable RAM: 291 MB". WTF?
Please mates, try it on your Legend and let me know if just mine is f*cked up.
Just checked on mine with android system info: I have exactly the same "issue".
Maybe the rest of the ram/rom is allocated to the OS and therefore not "visible".
I assume that these Sys Info applications does not display correct information. I tried some more similar applications and tested on HTC Tattoo also - it seems there are some hardware reserved system resources which are not discoverable by the apps.
Actually the value in /proc/meminfo also shows 291MB. Is there something between Linux kernel and the hardware itself that could take the remaining 96 megs?

I have the same problem.
Do you all have rooted phones or not? I think that if the phone is not rooted, some part of memory is locked.
My phone is rooted and it has 291MB of RAM.
This is because of the limitations of the 2.6.29 linux kernel, used in android 2.1 not the device itself. This should be resolved with the next release.
The memory will be fixed with the 2.2 froyo update?
should do
Android 2.2 users 2.6.32 kernel which supports HIGHMEM support for RAM >256MB
old post I know but I've got 2.2 and apps still report 291mb of ram. I presume the rest is hidden by the system and not anything to do with the kernel not using the memory ?
I'm testing " The NewSense 1.0 alpha 6 " by @ogo2 and it is the same :
ROM : 185.1 MB total
RAM : 291.4 MB total
ahaha:-DDD
did your really think that a problem?)
"i have the same problem"
very funny, thx guys

Do not worry, it should be! memory depends on the ROM

!! RAM Roms Pleaes !!

Why are there no more new RAM builds anymore?
MDJ's RAM Rom is very beautiful, but it has stil the issue that the data isn't working for the dutch vodafone users.
How can we make this work?
I don't want a NAND build on my HD2 because I also runs Primo navigation on my HD2. (This because its a very beautiful navigation)
I want to have a RAM Rom, because it's starts very quick.
Current I'm running the Core_Droid_HD_V0.4_Release_Version, but in this version I saw that it makes temporary files on the SD-card, every time I start this build.
Also takes it's time to boot.
Search the forum, theres a fix for this
The fix is I think only for the RAM build of Darkstone, ant the Gingerbread ROM.

for temp files just uninstall 3d galery and than delete temp files thru file manager.
I also like that rom the very best after this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=881937 Got 2.500 score in quadrant with this btw
I use both of them every booth i use other

Yes, this is normal. It has 576 Mb of RAM but it's something to do with Android, I really don't know why exactly this happens. In the past couple of days there have been two threads about this subject, and there were many more before that, so please search before posting and read those for much more in-depth explanations of what happens because frankly I don't know why.
Physically it has 576MB but in system is available only around 400-410MB (depends on kernel), so everything is as it should be. It has been answered many times
128 for graphics chipset taken at boot, so 410/420 + 128 = 550 so only 26 meg missing, , ,
Here is the detail answer from Rick_1995..
Leo has 576mb ram, the kernel and SPL, IPL map some normal and IO memory for special devices like DSP, AMSS etc.. and some is taken by the kernel drivers such as msmfb (framebuffer), kgsl (graphics), wireless etc.. Depending on which kernel you're using and how the driver is mapping stuff, you can have more or less ram than 403MB, if you're speaking of the Dorimanx's thread, I was telling him about his wrong conversion method and NOT about the amount of ram available to dalvik.
eg. Tytung's older kernels have 411MB available to dalkvik, earlier kernels which didn't map the extended bank properly had ~200MB available to dalvik. If you're willing to take out some drivers or optimise some of them you can have more than 411MB too. Windows phone reserves even more memory to kernel space stuff and has only about 375MB available to userspace in tango.
As for 448MB, the EU version had the rest of it's 128MB from the total 576MB (reserved/blocked ?) by the radio which was later unlocked by flashing a .50 TMOUS radio to the EU version.
It is just like seeing 3gb ram on a 32 bit computer with 4gb physical ram (though here instead of actual ram, the address space is reserved for various peripherals)
