White is kryptonite to the Galaxy S! - Vibrant General

You guys weren't joking when you said that the battery drains a "bit" quicker with a white background on there. I couldn't believe the rate at which my battery was being drained, so I set up a little test to see just how fast the juice was being sucked...
I used 3 wallpapers, a pure Black, a pure White and Galactic Core Live Wallpaper (Mostly green, a little purple, a little black). Since it would take too long to do it from 100% to 0%, I instead opted to do it from 50% to 40% for each one of them. With full brightness applied, wifi, gps, bluetooth, no sleep for the screen. I let each one just sit there from 50% until they each reached 40%.
The results blew me away!!!
Black Wallpaper lasted 85 mins for 10% loss. Or 14.1 hours @ 100%
Galactic Core lasted 45 mins for 10% loss. Or 7.5 hours @ 100%
White Wallpaper lasted a mere 20 mins for 10% loss. Or 3.3 hours @ 100%
Over 4 times the rate of black??? Wow!

Wow. I know white uses more battery but I didn't know the difference is so big. Now I know what wallpapers to avoid. LOL

Yea, that doesn't surprise me, not sure why it blew you away...

On a Super AMOLED screen a black pixel is off which takes no power, a white pixel takes the most power, so go figure.

i've been using black.png wallpaper, just because it looks so awesome. SO BLACK

Would you be interested in doing that test again but in flight mode? Just to make sure theres no draining of the battery due to other processes. ( Scuse if youve considered this already )

Help I try to flash black png with the odin and no workee.

No red takes the least besides black on an amoled screen black is off.

So white killed it faster then a live background. wtfo, I didnt see that coming although I do see the logic behind it, but thought the CPU drain of rendering the background would pass the solid white, or atleast be close. Helluva test, thanks for the info.

This is what i use...just black

Great test. Appreciate the findings. Been using black backgrounds for a while and it helps tremendously but didn't know the results would be so drastic

Idea: improve battery life with more blacks

Nexus uses AMOLED display where every pixel produces its own brightness. As far as i know, every black pixel is technically an off pixel. So if we used a black-heavy theme, it may significantly reduce display's battery draw. And since display is a major juice sucker, this may improve battery life.
What do you think?
The added contrast certainly would help the display be more visible during the daylight, too. We all know how artists love those bright white and gray gradients that have earned Apple so many UI design awards, but I'd much prefer to extend the lifetime of this gorgeous display as much as possible.
I always have a black wallpaper in order to save as much battery as possible.

Thanks for spreading the word, but most of the tech people here were already aware of this.
Another tip: I have Beautiful Widgets' brightness widget on my homescreen (so it only takes 1x1 icon) and tap it often so it goes to near darkness (11%) when I'm going to use it for a while (indoors). Saves quite a bit of battery.
Pretty dumb idea in my opinion.
33 hours, 30% battery left, factory battery, on froyo. If you want better battery life, a black wallpaper isn't going to help.

anyway, if infact true black color on the nexus ones screen is the off position then it will save battery. The only thing is, is that it must be 100% true black, dark colors wont do because they still require the same power as many other colors. It has to be true #000000

I was wondering how long it would take someone to get along to the joke I had in my head all day :-D
Thank you, good sir!

Why is my DISPLAY eating 80% of my battery?

So my battery has been great since switching to bangster's build. I loved it. Only thing that confuses me was my "about battery usage" status. It shows that my display is eating the majority of my battery. Any idea?
I'm using the latest tmousa radio. My setting is always 25% dim and no animation. I don't have live wall paper nor any widget that requires constant update.
I've attached a screenshot to show my status.

How did you get that screen? Then I can compare. I'm sure it's correct and probably normal if you think about how big it is. All those numbers are relative to each other. Your screen is going to take up the majority of your battery compared to apps, regardless of what it's set at. I bet if you set it at 100% brightness, the percentage will stay about the same.
Mine has always had similar readings regardless of build
i also got 80% ? even when i turning off the brightness :-D
Mines doesn't ever seem to take as my much but my android system does.

80 percent is pretty high.
These are my stats after being off the charger for about 8 hours. Even if I had my screen on and playing on my phone all day I have never seen dispaly that high on mine.
Maybe the app you're using isn't working correctly on the HD2 (what is that, taskkiller x?)
As long as it's a minor inconvenience like that I wouldn't worry about it...
I was running dark stone's build before this and I remember system taking the majority of the load so I was just concern about my display setting.
I have task killer but not set to autokill. I'm stumped on this. Maybe it is normal since my battery life is better than ever.
Maybe I should post this question in bangster's thread to see if other users of this build experience similar things.

Live wallpaper death?

Ok so i've downloaded a live wallpaper called shadow galaxy from the market. Probably one of the nicest wallpapers ive seen but it will literally kill my battery in 8hrs. I mean man...
Shouldn't the wallpaper go into some kind of standby when the screen is off so that it doesnt eat at the battery?
I mean approx 8hrs from 90% to dead and not even touching the phone is nuts. I went to sleep and it was at 7% when i woke up!
That's the reason why most people go with the standard wallpapers instead of live ones. It's just not worth it.

Battery life is the most important than after "does it work?" in a mobile phone/smartphone to me.

I've used Photile Pro for weeks and my battery doesn't seem to drain any faster than from normal use with a non-Live Wallpaper. Coding does make a difference and not all of them are horrible on your battery.
I used to use solar winds and usually got decent battery life with it. It was the only LWP that wouldn't kill my fone. Give it a try for a few days.
I use live wallpapers because everytime I turn the screen on my to my phone i jizm almost instantly. I then use the jizm as a screen cleaner. This is why I like to use the live wallpaper!
Haven't run into a badly coded LWP in a while, I'm using Flurry Live and it doesn't affect my battery at all

You may still get good battery life while using a live wallpaper but there's no doubt you'll get even better without it. Even the best of them still take load on the battery, after all, they're background running apps.

Screen comparison: Charge vs. Fascinate

Spent some time playing with a Droid Charge today at a VZW store. Setting both Charge and my Fascinate to max brightness, it was fairly evident the Fascinate gets brighter. Now then, looking at fine pixel resolution on text and edges, the Charge is clearly better with SAMOLED+. And the 4.3" size is awesome. Anyone else notice the brightness went backwards?
I haven't gone to a Verizon store lately, so I haven't seen Super Amoled + firsthand, yet.

Screen filter rocks! Use it all the time.
Only issue I've found is that prior to community ROM and otb kernel, the phone soft button backlights would scale brightness to match the screen brightness. They don't anymore, they just stay super bright, so you have to block them to keep them from blinding you at night.

Longest you've kept the display on?

Hi folks,
Just to see how the use of the phone is like here, what's the longest you've ever kept the display on continuously and what app/game were you running?
Cheers.
For me it's got to be close to 10 - 12 hours. I may have turned it off a couple of times in that period to use the restroom or eat, but you can assume it's almost constantly on.
I was using the studydroid app, and then intermittently surfing the web.
played a very slow round of golf (behind 3 80-yr olds) which lasted over 6 hours.

Lawl, I'm surprised that the battery lasted that long.
Just watched "The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo" on my flight from LAX > NYC... was planning on watching a second/third movie but was too afraid of killing my bat and not being able to access hopstop when we arrived =/ That sure was not the case! I had over 70% battery left even after using it to surf/listen to music at the airport before our flight...
Love this battery! Using stock LC1
I have average 3 and half hours of display time in regular day. Using note from 12h-16h on full battery to about 10%.

About 34 hours (plugged to ac adaptor). For online webcast. It has not touched for about ~34 hours. Standing on a shelf with a running Safari browser (stock browser) at flash online translation of video conference. Wifi on, screen always on with SwitchPro widget.
6-7 hours, while playing/observing chess on ICC App. the setting was to stay the screen on which comes as an option in the application itself,it was on battery but didnt notice how much was left after the session as it was already past five in the morning
Couldnt get to sleep, since wife was in the mood of high toned snoaring,
Have any of you experienced the burnt in yet? Look carefully!
34 hours, that's a record so far for continuous use!
If I'm using the stock battery, I can only get about 7 - 10hours max. But since I use the hyperion extended battery, I can usually get over 14 hours. Hyperion battery last longer than I can lol. Keep in mind studydroid doesn't drain nearly as much battery as watching a movie or playing a game.
I would make sure you guys are using launchers that hide the notification bar or apps that have the option to hide the notification bar. Otherwise you will have terrible burn out on the top of the screen.
Also try to rotate the phone from right to left when viewing in landscape as that will help prevent burn out.
If you don't think your amoled screen can burn out do an LCD test and take a look at the blue screen test....Then you'll see why you should not leave static images on the screen for long periods of time.
Samsung Screen Test:
type this into the phone dialer and press on the blue and green.
*#*#0*#*#*
The burn in is not permanent. Due to the volatile nature of AMOLED in terms of obtaining burn-ins, I'm fairly certain you can download clips to flush and reduce the burn-in's persistence.
After a while, just use the damn phone and enjoy it. Stop worrying.

Browsing the internet is taxing on the cpu, it changes frequency constantly etc. When you are watching for example a movie, the cpu stays at a constant, lowest possible frequency and consumes less power. Thats why tests on engadget usually show 6-8 hours of screen on time.

The burn out of the amoled pixels is permanent. They slowly fade until you can clearly see ghosting of the static image on top of an active screen. This has happened with my galaxy s and sII. So to prevent pixel wear avoid static images on amoled screens.
