Ok, so it came first thing this morning. I've spent the last few days reading up on the forum, and was wanting to flash a new rom (for the customised screens etc)
Now, I know I'm a NOOB in the biggest sense of the word when it comes to WM but some of the abbreviations in the guides are confusing me, can someone please explain them to me, or excatley what i need to be doing (just until i work my way round a bit!)
I know that there's a noobs guide, and i have read it honest, but i don't wanna be bricking it!
Pwweeease?
Make sure you have windows mobile device center installed on your pc. Connect the hd2 via usb to your computer (with the cable included with your hd2) and wait until windows mobile device center says it is connected.
To put an official rom on your hd2, download the rom and run the .exe included in the package. Follow the steps onscreen and you're done.
To put a custom rom on your hd2, you need to flash hardspl first. Steps are explained in detail here . Basically it involves connecting your hd2 to the pc, running the hardspl .exe file on your pc, and following the onscreen steps. Then that is done, and you will have to run the .exe file included in the custom rom package, and follow the onscreen steps again. To be safe you won't have any bugs, do a hard reset of your hd2 just after flashing the custom rom. Look here how to do that, it is explained at nr. 15. Pretty easy
good luck
if you make sure your hd2 battery doesn't run out (higher than 50% is usually said), and you make sure your pc doesn't shut down or do anything weird while updating, and you don't disconnect the cable while you are flashing, chances are practically 0 you will brick it.
What abbreviations are confusing you?
Cheers for the quick reply mate, i don't wanna come across as a complete knob (although i probably am already!)
TBH, it was things like hardspl and the other one, sspl or something?
If i put a customised ROM on it, is there any way of going back or is that it then?
Also, is windows 6.5.3 worth it? It's new out of the box, so have no idea whats what yet.
What, if any roms would people suggest? Also, do push notifications for twitter and facebook work? I've found already that the stock FB app that comes with it doesn't let you see people's comments on status's etc
All very confusing so far, but I'm still not reaching for the iphone back.....Yet!

best to check what you have got on the device before you start upgrading..lol
when my phone arrived most of the updates from htc were on it already..
Forget about sspl (softspl), you don't need it. Hardspl is "better" (to keep things simple)
Flashing a new rom will delete all your settings, installed programs, etc etc. So backup what you need before flashing (you can use microsoft MyPhone -which is preinstalled on hd2's- to backup certain things).
About going back, yea you can 'go back', in case you can download the rom that is currently on your hd2. It is probably official hd2 rom version 1.48, but of course i'm not sure. But i don't think you would want to go back, there is no reason to. Unless you hate new roms, but you can always find one that is undebatably better and more up to date than the rom you are using now.
Yea windows mobile 6.5.3 is nice and in some ways a little better than 6.5, but it doesn't work 100% correctly with HTC sense. There are some graphical glitches with this on 6.5.3 roms.
I prefer Dutty's 0.3a rom (here) because it is basically the same as your stock rom, but with up to date software, up to date windows mobile 6.5, updated htc sense - and everything works flawlessly for me.
Haven't tried push notifications for facebook or twitter, so can't comment on that. 6.5.3 roms have some graphical glitches with HTC sense. Many other 6.5 roms have other customizations that I don't like.
Forget about the iPhone, the hd2 baby is miles and miles better (yes i've used the iPhone).
if you need more recommendations, shoot
Cheers for that mate. I'm gonna put sprog to bed and give it a go!
You are correct in the fact that it is a stock 1.48 rom shipped on the phone, please excuse my ignorance, this is my first wm phone! I'm an expert on the iphone now though lol!
I did read about flashing with bepe's thing, is that still needed?
Hopefully i'll find some decent FB and twitter apps that does push (I'm addicted lol!)
Umm, then to sort out google activsync again!
"bepe's thing" is hardspl, which is needed only once (ever) to unlock your phone to enable flashing custom roms. So yes, you need to do it when you want to flash a custom rom.
I don't want to be a damp rag or anything but I'd personally use the phone for a week or two before installing any custom ROMs. When I received my phone it was perfect, lasted 2 days easy on one charge (with everything set to auto update) and had no camera issues. I then installed the unofficial 1.48 and now the battery struggles to get 2 days even with most auto updates turned off and the camera developed the over exposure issue. Now I regret updating it and am slightly hesitant to do it again.
Also, most custom ROMs at the moment do not have very major upgrades to them and are usually just very slightly tweaked. I'm waiting for something more worthwhile to be released (like WM6.5.3 with a fully functional Sense) before I go and HSPL my phone. Take a look at this user for an example of what might happen.
But then again I may be acting over cautious and might not be enjoying the full power and epic-ness out of my HD2.

What is unofficial 1.48? There is an official 1.48, and most unofficial custom roms are based on a higher rom version than 1.48. I think you're being a little over cautious, I have flashed practically millions of roms on HTC devices and never experienced a problem. The problems you are having with battery and camera are probably related to your custom rom choice and/or your settings.
But you're right that there isn't a world of difference between the stock rom and newest custom roms, the hd2 is a relatively new device. Still, I feel you can't go wrong by updating the rom to a good custom one, and it will be better than the stock rom. Dutty's holy grail 0.3a is my recommendation, but to each one his own.
Slow down mate!
Northerneil,
I know you are dying to get into your device and flash roms like there's no tomorrow. I say STOP, slow down, take your time.
I would get to know how your device works the way it is first. One good thing about this is that if there any hardware problems you can return the device as an exchange without having to undo loads of changes that are NOT warranty friendly.
Next, READ, READ and READ again. Flashing roms sounds quite simple and the process has improved tremendously. The problem isn't flashing a rom; its knowing how to recover if it all goes wrong. Its getting to know the pitfalls and how to get out of them e.g your device rebooting for no reason, which is a problem some serial flashers are having right now.
Welcome on board, hope you heed my advice although I appreciate you are a big boy and can do what you want. However a bricked device can take a long time to fix, even if you know what you are doing, and if you are lvery ucky.
WB
PS: Feel free to PM me if you want to know more about certain functions and abbreviations. You need to know as much as possible before you start tinkering with your device.

By "unofficial" I was referring to the 1.48 405 WWE that was available for download before HTC made it official on their website.
I am still running that "unofficial" 1.48 ROM with the stock settings so I doubt that these problems have anything to do with my settings.
I want to send a HUGE thanks to all the developers and users on the site. I have had nothing but problems over the past week, with my EVO being stuck in some inbetween root and unroot world... I couldn't load the PC36IMG file to re-root, I couldn't get toasts part 2 running to run so i could get those files to run, couldn't get files to flash that needed flashing, etc.... I was stuck only able to use one or 2 different roms, which, while allowing me to have a phone, frustrated me to no end, knowing that it wasn't right. Through piecing bits of info I read in various different threads, i was finally able to do everything that I needed to do to get back to a good rooted state. I can now run any Rom, and have control over my phone again. I am starting to understand ADB a little better, and am no longer intimidated by it.
Only problem I still am having, is the 4g issue... I had a bad Mac address, which I was finally able to run the fix (I couldn't get in before because of the state of the phone), but I still get the (Turning on, scanning, connecting to sprint, turning off, repeat). I know it is only a matter of time till that gets fixed as well.
I decided to thank everyone in a single thread, because it was no one persons help or advice that helped me get through this. It was a collective effort by everyone. I don't want to even TRY to thank individuals, for fear of leaving someone out.
Thanks again....
I was having the 4g issue.. i just reverted back to the DC ROM 3.1.2.. works like a charm for me. I'll wait until the stable Froyo ROMs before i upgrade again.
I was on the phone with T-Mobile Support (611), regarding my HD2 and the issues that I am still having with this device. The rep. stated that T-Mobile is aware of the issues on the phone and that the 1st ROM update did not resolve them all and caused some new ones.
She stated specifically this new update would resolve the issue of the device hanging after you try to wake up the phone...also, the "unreliable data connection" issue is still prevalent (I still have this problem - and I have tried everything I can think of or read about). She stated that there are other fixes that they are working on to resolve with this new update.
I could not get a solid time frame, but she stated that it should be pretty quick, given that they issued the first one within a short time frame after the HD2 release.
Now, I'm not sure if this means an upgrade from 6.5 to 6.5.3, but I wouldn't count on it. I just hope it is released soon. This device is so nice and so awful at the same time. Constantly I experience little nagging issues that make using this device such a hassle.
Have you tried just flashing it to one of these custom ROMs?
No I have not yet tried the custom ROM yet on the HD2. I like the way the T-Mobile ROM are, I just am getting fed up with the "unreliable data connection" BS. Also, the phone (since the ROM update) has been running slow and I don't think that is acceptable with the 1GHz snapdragon on this device. My only other issue is that the speaker phone stops working because T-Mobile added some stupid software to the device. If you dial 611, the software pops up and tries to solve your problem via webpage and stops the speaker phone from working till you restart the device.
While that is a short list of issues, they are major issues in using the device. But I think i will wait till this 2nd update comes out...if it does not resolve my issues, custom ROM here I come!
I belive flashing NRG will solve your issues It did mine.
Which issue did it solve? The data connection issue?
Data and freezing as well not to mention the phone just flies now. flashing a new radio fixed reception issue
well I will give it a try and see if it resolves my issues as well. I figure we have about a month or so before T-mobile releases the 2nd update. I know I will not be able to last that long with these issues. It is just a pain in the a-- to flash ROMs every day...I'm not into doing it all the time. I would like to find a good stable ROM and run with it. It just takes too much time flashing and reinstalling all those programs and changing the settings to where I like them all (too much work).
Like I said it is a shame, i really like this device on paper, but in the real world is just has some serious issues. I thought i would get a year or two out of this device when i bought it, now I am already looking to swap this puppy out. I'm looking to see what is coming down the pipeline. I refuse to go with WP7 (feels like the step backwards with it limitations as compared to WM6.5 - and i don't want a device that clones the iPhone of 4 years ago)
Anyone other suggestion on custom ROMs?
NRG 21911 is very solid and you don't have to flash everyday it has xda uc and pim backup witch will back up and reinstall all your software I did it yesterday in about 20 min. I refrain from flashing during the week. the the first time it will take about an hour just read all you can on it. 670megs free space on device 13gigs on sd and 300 megs of free RAM
I'm downloading the 23121 Cookie Dinik Glass version right now...I'll let you know how it works on my device. thanks for pointing me in this direction, appreciate it!
tmobile rep told me the same thing after I had a warranty exchange, she said to expect the update soon as there are alot of people experiencing problems with the current software. Although to be honest after running Android on my HD2 I dont think I ever want to use winmo again.
are you getting everything to work with Android? i did not think they have a fully functional Android ROM for the HD2 yet
They're all the same...
My biggest complaint is the bad data connection. Paying too much money for crappy connection. I can't even get connection in my lower level of my house. I think every carrier and cell phones all have their own problems. My two co-workers, one with Droid and the other iPhone have similar problems. Droid keeps freezing 2 warranty phone exchanges so far and iPhone looses connection frequently. iPhone guy wishes his would freeze so he could get a replacement. So it's not just me.
Help me please
So i tried to install android, and on gthe web it said i needed to install hpsl well my phone had it set to 2.10 they stated i needed 2.08 or earlier so i did it but the install still didn't work !!! How can i return my phone back to 2.10 and still get my warranty back
android fo real?

i read on pocetnow that android is being worked on on xda. seen a couple of post too, but there is always some component not really working. is there an official android post where all the kinks are worked out? i would like to switch if thats the case. thanks.
Wow is all I can say about that NRG ROM....it is great! does everything I have been looking for, no data connection issues since last night (I'll report back on this issue as time goes by). It's fast and very stable (so far, but hell I'm impressed), and I did not even use most stable version the 21911.
The UI is great, I love the three pages of app slot, everything is within one or two finger stokes this way. It also gets rid of the apps that I don't want (ie TelNav, etc...) but keeps most of the apps that I do want...I can always install cabs for the programs I want from the official ROM. Plus it has cooked into it all those sweet tweaks and settings. Great work, I'm not even waiting for T-mobile to release the 2nd update any longer.
Thanks gtrplr71 again for suggesting this custom ROM, it's so nice, I don’t even think I will be trying out any other ROMs.
I would not get hopes up of a 6.5.3 upgrade. Could you imagine the Technical support nightmare if they had to troubleshoot 2 different OS versions?
This is one reason I think Android and Linux will really take off in the future.

There's a HD2 Android section in the original HD2 area (euro hd2 section).... but it is a work in progress. There are still a lot of issues and kinks. It will be a while before it works as well as a native android phone. But the progress they've made is unbelievable. It's great having both winmo and android on my phone.

your welcome don't forget to make a backup with pim backup to your sd card and use xda uc once you get things settled. Have fun!
how does the xda uc work? i could not figure that out, when I ran the app it stated that i did not have that file on my storage card...but it appeared there somehow.
Also, the incall record does not seem to work at all. when i lauch it (after I connect or before I connect a call) all I get is a blank lined page (note pad page).
And, is there a list of the added and removed apps somewhere? I could not find it in the ROM thread.
As for the 6.5.3 upgrade from T-Mobile, i don't think it will happen either and right now, after trying the NRG ROM...I don't care. I'm not even going to try the T-mobile 2nd ROM upgrade. Now with Android comes along on the HD2 (fully functional) then i will surely set up a dual boot situation on my HD2. That is like the best of both world.
(xda uc)-you wont notice anything different It will run and monitor the phone for new settings when you decide to flash a new build it will auto run and import settings and apps.

I just need to start off by saying you guys are awesome! I'm actually enjoying my phone for the first time since I got it the first week it came out. Keep up the awesome work!
Main concern is that when the screen times out in either my Froyo or Eclair Roms, I cannot get it to wake up. Anything I press will initiate the back-light and nothing more. I've pressed several times using each button and nada, I have to pull the battery. All issues occurred prior to installing the latest zImage, running the task29 and formatting my sdcard.
Additionally, I've noticed the Camera Flash doesn't work in either Rom and no picture is shown in the Froyo build. Other then that, I have found no issues. Mild delays but that's probably attributed to the Class 2 card and early Android builds. No real concern here. None of these issues occur in the Windows Mobile environment.
So I pretty much put everything I am using in my signature. I have the Froyo build in \Android and the Desire files are all in the root of the SD. I have task 29 the system and used Panasonic's SDFormatter v2.0 to wipe the SD. I have nothing installed but exactly what I have listed in the signature. I haven't even copied over the Transformers movies. My issues are consistent even if I haven't set up any account information or anything. I'm not complaining and I've read some others express similar issues but haven't figured out an answer. So that's about it. If I find any answers to my few issues, I'll post here. And again, I'm freakin excited for the development of the Android Roms and NRG's WinMo Rom has never let me down. I just prefer Android but like having both options. Thanks for all the help and if there's nothing that can be done right now, well again, I'm not complaining... Stay at it Chefs, you guys are awesome!
OK I didn't think to try a different zimage but I used the July23rd one and my screen timeout issue is fixed. Now to resolve the no camera issue in my Froyo Rom and I'm set. The other issues are fairly minor and will likely get worked out in time.
Does your zImage charge the phone, too? I'm facing the same problem, sometimes the screen doesn't come on and at other times it's unresponsive even if it does.
Look around, the newest zimage causes this for some ppl. Chill for a new zimage release.
Hey guys.. I love Android. I've ran so many different rom's and CM6 Nightly's n such on my Nexus One and I really love the phone. I love this HD2 also tho.
I've been using the HD2 with DarkStone FroYo for the last 10 Days or so. I must say I LOVE the HD2. It's a great phone, I love the screen and it's size, but hard buttons all being one piece of plastic was a bad move but thats about it.
Basically here's my issue. I have screen freezes that are a few seconds, or up to 10 allll day long. sometimes it will freeze and wont go into sleep mode for up to a minute (at least a few times a day) I lose my Data signal at least 10 times a day also. Sometimes it comes back, other times I need to Toggle Airplane on/off and my signal will come back.. Basically it's very smooth and awesome, then just craps. and this is extremely often and very random and it's starting to get very irritating. I wanna go back to my Nexus. I've also tried SkinnyEVO and had similar problems.. Are there any ROM's that are smoother and more stable, screen freezes and data drop-outs are really starting to irritate me knowing I wouldn't have these issues on my N1.
Should I wait for Nand to get going, should I try a few more ROM's. Is there fixes for these issues? Any info or suggestions would be great. I'd love to use this for a Daily phone, but in the current state it's a hard call.
Man Try MCCM 1.6 with updating kernel hastarin 8.5
it doesn't freeze at all.
everything work no bugs at all.
camera with zoom , face detection.
it is an awesome build
which radio u have and wim mobile u got ?
Darkstone has not updated his build for quite some time. Definitely try an updated build with latest kernels before giving up on the ole HD2. The touchscreen freeze has been eliminated with the newer kernels. I've been using the Motodroid build which has very good performance with the best working camera; no green tint, full 5 mp with working wide screen mode and shutter sound is selectable (which I have not found in any other build).
I don't know what MinMo build. I'll check, but I have the latest Kernel for the HD2. Kernel 2.15.50
I'll check what WinMo after work. Thanks for posts. I'll report back later
Do try a newer build, like the others said. I upgraded mine to hdone and replaced the kernels and i have yet to have my phone screen freeze. When i was using every other build with the old kernals, it froze all the time. Don't give up on your hd2 yet!
I think you have hit on 2 major issues the first screen freezes has been pretty much solved with the latest kernels with the g sensor fix. So try Hastarins 8.5 or mdeejays latest.
Second the data problems still exist but has been much improved with Letamas Ril Wrapper and other ppp tweaks ,see Letamas thread. if you try one of the newer roms they might have all above already in, so worth a try before going back to nexus.
I've been following Android on HD2 since August, and I've gone from all your problems and more to almost none (touch wood: my phone has begun to freeze today after three weeks of no problems - I'm hoping it's an installed app issue).
They are getting better and better and it's only battery life which remains an issue (for me).
Everyone's going to have different results depending on Radio/Location/Operator, but personally the MDeeJay Sense Revolutions (both types - Froyo and his other one), have worked very well for me, on Energy ROMS (currently the barebones one).
I can't promise Android on HD2 will always be flawless, but your two biggest gripes are certainly solvable on the right combination. (I hope!)
Change your SD card to a Class 6 and let us know.
Give up on the HD2, go back to the Nexus, send me your HD2
Scan my signature for my setup - I find it the best after changing at least 15 builds, 7 WinMo ROMs and 4 different radio combinations.
PS I am really stubborn guy, so that tells you that I've tried all possible combinations with above count of builds, roms, radios - and so far this one gives me what I want: HD2 with the Build that is smoothest and more stable than any Android phone I played around with so far... including nexus one
Thanks for all the information posted here guys. I appreciate it. I'll try mdeejay's latest and see how things go. (all of mdeejay's are Sense UI) I want stock Froyo
Another question. Can I copy everything from my Android Folder, to a New Android Folder for the new ROM I'm about to try, and have everything be exactly how it is now on DarkStone, or will that not work?

Titanium backup is your friend there. google for the wiki and read up on how to backup and restore.
Oh and if you don't like Sense, that's fine, just install whatever launcher you want, press the home button and it will ask you what launcher to use, tick the box for "use this by default" and sense won't come back to bug you. You can also remove the lockscreen slide by deleting the "HTCLockScreen.apk" via adb.
Just also to backup what others are saying, later builds like the one in my sig are far more reliable and useable, I get no data drops or any of the other problems you experience currently.
I know how titanium and all that works, thanks for trying to help though.
I just figured since everything is in the Android Folder, couldn't I copy it to another Android1 folder and boot to that build, and everything be there. but if not. It's ok. I'll just titanium backup everything instead.
I'm thinking about trying out BiffMod 1.2

You need to change you're SD card. I had gone through the same problem with A-Data class 4 sd card...but large waking times randomly spoiled the whole android experience....so much so that I gave up android...
But ever since I went back to replacement 16GB samsung SD card (which is ironically class 2) things have improved...and the phone wakes up instantly..
Also upgrade the kernel to hastarin v8.5.1 of ur build..it just solved all Data issues for me..maybe it will work for you too
I'm using the stock 16GB Class 2 Samsung that it came with. I have a 16GB Class 10 in my Nexus if we want to compare. but I'm not sure how large the SD class will really change things. Maybe a little.
I came to the HD2 from a Nexus.
I love my nexus... but wanted a larger screen.
Originally I had all the issues you commented... Id already sold my N1 so I really had to work on the HD2 working how I wanted it.
After flashing different roms, radio's, androids and kernels Ive finally landed where I am happy and in just the recent weeks with the tweaks the devs have done to their kernels my phone is rocketing and would never go back...
Only thing I do miss is the trackball and its colored notifications.
OP, you asked about overwriting your files, here's what I did...
I backed up my whole SD Card to my PC, so that I had my full working phone backed up just in case.
I then overwrite the contents of my old Android build with my new Android build, ignoring the data.img file.
Then re-booted, and Voila! EVERYTHING (apps, settings, wallpapers etc) came back, but my ROM was faster and smoother and upgraded.
This was switching from one ROM-maker to an entireley different one (both were Android 2.2 though).
If this had failed, I could have wiped my SD card, and made a choice between trying a fresh new Android, or using my SD Card back-up. If I'd had to go fresh, I'd know my Google Account would hold my contacts and purchased app settings. The AppBrain app is also useful in this regard.
Have fun!
im in a similar situation. i got me a secondhand nexus one, to try how android runs on a native device. i walked around with it for some days now, and i think im soon going back to my hd2, cause I CANT GET USED TO THE SMALL SCREEN ON THE NEXUS XD
really. not.
android on the hd2 runs almost as smooth as on the nexus one, i dont even cared in choosing the right build for my hd2, i just picked froyostone, and thats it xD
so yea, in the end, the only thing i really love on the nexus one is the awsome trackball, with its different colours :3 omg i want that on my hd2... ;(
i was having the freezing problem when i was using energy rom with the stock sd card when i flashed to the newest tmobile rom all of my freezing went away so if you have that problem try the newest tmobile rom it worked for me
