I have local storage with tons of video files in .mkv format.

Search for CIFS MANAGER (and CIFS.KO for Galaxy S)
Or use this:
VLC Stream + Convert

Has anyone use the built in player or windows media player to play a .M4V file.
HTC website says its supported, but Windows Media reports a problem and the built in player, accessed via albums, does display the file in question. Although it does seem to count it when you use the library selector.
I have posted a question to HTC support who says .M4V isn't supported, see below, but the specifications on the HTC website definately say it is supported.
I really want to know if M4V files are supported by default, but am interested to know if anyone has played this format using other players, such as CorePlayer etc.
Please note I do not want to convert the file from M4V to another format.

Got a Response from HTC
.M4V (Itunes MP4 files) are supported but not if DRM is included.
I have now played one but the full HTC response is below.
Dear customer, M4V files are used for TV episodes, movies, and music videos in the iTunes Store. .M4V files are similar to .MP4 files, both of which are MP4 files. The difference is that M4V files are opened with iTunes player by default. MP4 files are opened with Quicktime player by default. The copyright of M4V files may be protected by using Apple's FairPlay DRM copyright protection. To play a protected M4V file, the computer needs to be authorized (using iTunes) with the account that was used to purchase the video. However, unprotected M4V files may be recognized and played by other video players by changing the file extension from ā.m4vā to ā.mp4ā. M4V files contain DRM and the purchasing users info. It is recommended to use Requiem to remove the DRM and remux this into mkv. About the file in your storage card, when you try to opne in the album viewer not recognized the file and when you try with the windows media player then recognised the file because it have the codec in the data base inside the application. Best regards, HTC customer support team HTC Corp. Global Service Division
I was looking around and saw that the video player does not display the subtitles for .mkv files...does anyone know if it would be possible to somehow enable the video player to be able to display them?

Bumping.
I've got the same question. If the default player doesn't play mkvs with subtitles, is there another player that does so (already tried Rock Player).
I think we're outta luck. I asked this question a while back and got nothing but crickets.
If you absolutely need the subtitles, you could always hard encode them, but it is probably only worth the time if you absolutely cannot do without subtitles.
Nothing on the market right now which will get the subtitles. It sucks I know. There is a player in development that will support it but its not too close to release.

Have you guys tried mVideoPlayer?
It has pretty decent support for subtitles. Not sure if it plays embedded ones in mkv's, but it definitely does support subtitles.
Strange, I recall seeing a thread on Xda that had the same question but there was a guy who posted a picture/screencap of mkv and subtitles playing on a video player. I should have bookmarked that thread.

I've tried this but it didn't work. I extract the subs in .ass format and tried to load it but mVideoPlayer couldn't find the file even after I change the directory.
Try searching for meridian player in the market.

Did you make sure to rename the .ass file to match the .mkv you extracted it from? Make sure the file names match and put them both in the same directory on your phone. mVideoPlayer will load the subs automatically after you open the .mkv. It works flawlessly for me on my Galaxy S.
To view MKV files with subtitles, I've been using MKVtoolnix with MKVextractGUI to extract the subtitles from the MKV container. After the extraction, make sure the subtitle file(.ass, .srt, etc.) has the same name as the MKV file and place it in the same folder as the video. When that's done, use mVideoPlayer to play your file.
Hope this works for you!
I would include links for you guys, but there's a restriction for new users. A quick Google search should help you find the programs you'll need.

the problem with supporting subtitles in .mkv containers...is just that....mkv is JUST a container format, which can contain a myriad of video, audio, and subtitle file formats. And there are several subtitle file formats...
mVideoplayer supports external .SRT subs, so what one can do is use a tool like virtualdubmod or mkvtoolnix to demux subs out of the mkv container and assuming they are SRT, just extract them and name them to the exact name of the MKV file. it's also possible to download SRT subs fairly easily for common videos, but there's the possibility that text timing can be off....
...apparently mVideoPlayer supports .ass as well....
Oh, I just had to place the subs in the same folder as the Video. That worked for me.
Breaking: mVideoPlayer 2.20 updates states that it now supports subs in MKV's. I haven't tried it yet, I'm just now dling it.
Peep here.
Support for subtitles in MKV files, but you need a phone that supports playback of mkv.

edit: more info
Yep, now it is time again for another beta version of mVideoPlayer. This time the big news are subtitle support in mkv files for phones that support playback of these files. (Galaxy S for example).
Full change-log:
- Support for subtitles in MKV files for all Galaxy S owners!
- Toggle subtitle on/off has been replaced with 'Subtitle Tracks' since MKV files may have multiple subtitle tracks.
- Now remembers previous search phrase in all search dialogs.
- IMDb Info accessible from poster search activity through long press on movie.
- Fix for poster search cache showing up in Gallery app on Android < 2.2 devices.

So I can play Avi files no problem on the Tab when they sit on my MicroSD card, but why can't I play them over my LAN?
I use EStrong File Explorer to browse to my file server on my home network, but when I tap the avi file it says it can't play that video file. Anyone know why?

Because it doesn't no how to handle a file that needs to be streamed. Try AndroStream Pro
Streamin avi/mkv via subtitle support.
That's the biggest loss in terms of apps compared to IOS. Air Video (for Iphone) is doing this extremely good. There are lots of Android users demanding its developer to support it for Android as well but no developments yet

For some reason I cant get very many of my avi movies to play. .are you using the stock movie player?
Yup, stock movie player.
Can I do a modification to enable it after it's rooted?
I tried to play .wmv files with floor model but I have no luck.
I have a lot of ripped DVDs in .mp4 (480p) format, but I also have several .wmv files downloaded. The size will drastically increase if I re-encode to .mp4 without degrading quality.
i think its in /etc/media_profiles.xml in bottom of file, change to "yes" and save back.
remember to have system r/w
MKV
You can attempt to convert the files to MKV.
The system by default does not play back this file source but there is a player called Mobo Player available on the market.
I have done a few mp4 720p conversions to mkv 720p and I am pleased to say they worked while not being to to big (average size is 1-2gigs per 1.5hrs)
I have read reports that Diceplayer handles mkv files. You might want to give that a try.
Hello Friends If Your Looking For A Video Player to Play all types of Video
Check out MX Video Player and also don`t forget to download the codec for those video ,been watching all types of video on the go .peace
I have a bunch of movies on an external hard drive connected to my home PC.
I want to be able to play the movies on my A500 whilst connected to the TV elsewhere in the house (over wifi)
I've played with clearfi with no luck. Is there an app that will allow me to do this easily with just a few clicks ?
Cheerz
I use PS3 Media Server on my PC and Bubble UPNP on my A500. Works great.
Thanks. I'll give them a try later. Will it play .avi files ?
I'm running off Thor's ROM, but I've had no issues streaming avi files via upnp.
The easiest method is BSPlayer, it actually lets you view movies from a shared folder rather than UPnP. You might have some lag with large files, but it does the job better than trying to get UPnP functionality to work 100% of the time.
There are a lot of options for streaming from PC. The easiest I've used so far is ES file explorer and MX video player. Just go to LAN in ES and stream via smb. MX streams/plays all the formats I have thrown at it.
If you have a custom rom with a kernel supporting cifs, you could try cifs manager. It create a shared folder on a specified location. It works great for music too. I can even scan my network shared music library with the stock music player (or other) by creating a shared folder on the sd-card.

For movies, I also recommend MovieBrowser HD, a nice front end that scan your movie library and fetch covers and descriptions, opens with your fav movie player.

Same here, es file explorer and mx or dice works great.
I'd second Diceplayer in a heartbeat if I could actually buy the full version. The trial played everything I threw at it including 720p avi and mkv files.
I just used File Manager HD to browse to folder and BS player to stream, very easy.
I tried a VLC app and it worked pretty well. Just make sure its not the remote app.

I was going to buy the full version but its saying the account is locked or something?
I'm going to spend this weekend trying all the suggestions - thanks
I ran into the same issue. I ended up giving BS Player a shot and it handled 720p mkv and avi files like a dream. Granted, it was playing them off an external HDD, but it's definitely worth a download.
Yes I think that FM HD is the best for LAN connection over wi-fi and xm player. But mx player cannot read subtitles from network drive.
Serviio for the pc (dlna server java software) and skifta on your A500.
