I really, really hate to admit this but... - Epic 4G General

When I got home tonight, I activated my evo because I missed it and wanted to try out some angry birds on it. To make my usually long story short, I hate to admit it but when I reactivated the epic, I think its better for what I want to do with a phone. That's a shame too. My evo isn't getting any love anymore from me. So sad, that was my baby. I really hate to let it go but I've had so many people want to buy my evo, that its surprising. Snce in my area evos are still sold out, I could probably get a little more than what I paid for it. Add to it the rebate, that I haven't sent in yet, and I would be turning a profit on it. Heh, decisions, decisions.
To me, the epic seems quicker but at the same time, sluggish in other areas. I'm sure that when 2.2 comes out, it will make this a better phone and experience. Once the battery has been conditioned a few times, I'd be so bold as to say that the epic might have better battery life than my evo. I can still watch the battery go down on the evo when the epic seems to not need a recharge as often. The htc's battery was conditioned and running fresh 3200 with the "new" battery tweaks. The epic is still outlasting it. I'm not trying to stir the pot, I'm just saying this is what I observed tonight.

If the Evo is from Sprint youre not going to get it, it must be mailed in within 30 days... as far as ccomparisons... eh not a fan of keyboards or samsung though, great phone nonetheless

I agree. As the days go by Im dis liking my evo more and more and loving the Epic. My first big gripe is the feel of the phone compared it seems so much lighter?
Another is the keyboard although I admit I hardly use the slide out but when I do its at those times when I really need a keyboard lol. And thats when its important and its so un-intrusive its 1000% useful
Overall feel of the Samsung isnt as high quality as the HTC but Im such a baby with my electronics it could be made out of glass it would last longer than most people live lol.
But I think it wouldnt fair as well if dropped to the evo who knows Im not going to test that one out.
Anyone want to buy a mint condition EVO? lol

Oh god, your title was misleading. I thought this was going to be one of those I'm returning my epic for this reason blah blah. Anyways great choice, I returned my Evo for this phone and I couldn't be happier. I actually use this phone, instead of flashing roms/themes every day. Everything runs fast on this phone, much faster than the Evo. Although both are great phones the Epic has more potential, imo.

I am returning this piece of junk. The GPS is for crap period. I really don't think a proper fix is coming. Look at the vibrant still no fix. My screen is ALREADY retaining burn in of the dialer and task bar. Screen wobble with closing of keyboard. I need a fully functional out of the box phone. Shame on Sprint and Samsung for releasing it full of bugs. I will not trust the safety of my family with this phone. And do not go tell me to buy a tomtom. A phone should do what it is supposed to.

Maybe you should go get a phone that works out of the box.....because my epic worked fine out of the box no GPS issues, no crashing, no bugs. Outside of the battery life....which is not that bad not much shorter then the iphone 3g its the best phone I have ever had.

Amoled doesn't get burn in, what it gets is dead pixles. I don't have any yet, but the usable life of Amoled is far less because pixles will begin dying off quick as time passes.
If i'm wrong, correct me. I was wrong once before... but that was long ago.

...and getting the thread back on track. I have had my Evo since the end of May and loved it, but I have sorely missed the keyboard. I ordered an Epic over the weekend (thanks to Sprint's wonderful policy of providing full $150 rebates for the airave line)and it's waiting at me for home. I am really looking forward to putting it through the paces. I hope I'm as happy with it as the OP was.

I was tore between getting the epic or the evo, bit I'm glad I got the epic, the screen is so awesome! The evo is nice but samoled puts it its big screen to shame. Im not getting any lag on my epic, cant wait for froyo to come out bc my dad's froyoed evo kicks my ass on browser speed, but once it comes out for epic this is gonna be zoomin

We have already had this discussion before because other users have reported burn ins with epics. They do not burn in the same way as lcd's but they do get burn ins.
Screen burn-in: Unlike displays with a common light source, the brightness of each OLED pixel fades depending on the content displayed. The varied lifespan of the organic dyes can cause a discrepancy between red, green, and blue intensity. This leads to image persistence, also known as burn-in.[68]

Finally back to EVO. My Epic journey :)

I got an EVO right after launch and loved it. I had a problem with the camera not working (defect). Best Buy didn't know when they were getting any back in so I canceled my upgrade and waited for the Epic. The Epic is an amazing piece of hardware. The screen has to be seen to be believed. That being said my first Epic was returned because the capacitive buttons didn't work at all. Best Buy swapped me out without a problem. My second one seemed to to be perfect (aside from the movement of the screen when the slider was closed).
After having it a few days I really liked the screen and the idea of the physical keyboard. However, I soon realized that the honeymoon phase was over when I tried to use the GPS and could only lock 1 sat no matter where I was. Then I noticed that I was getting what appeared to image retention. For example the notification bar left a faint image on the screen when on a all white screen (I only noticed cause I started hiding the notification bar with LaunchPro). Then I noticed that I could also see a faint image of the dialer buttons when on the same all white or blue screen. There are threads on here as well as other sites that detail how and why AMOLED screens have this issue. I guess the Nexus 1 had the same issue.
The keyboard was nice but the buttons were to spaced apart for me. I also didn't like the location of the power button it was awkward. I know that Samsung is "supposed" to fix the GPS but that remains to be seen. In my experience the screen was REALLY nice but if the image retention happens that easily it kinda ruins it for me. It's like the old school plasmas.
I was going to just swap it out again but honestly I expected the same problems. I called Best Buy this morning and told them what was happening and I asked if they had any EVO's and they actually received 1 white EVO this morning. They held it for me and the rest is history.
I have to say that coming full circle back to an Evo really feels great. I know on paper the Epic is supposed to be better and many like me were on the fence but the grass isn't always greener on the other side. The Evo feels better in my hand and it works. I just thought I would share my experience with switching to the Epic.
I was actually considering a switch but the more I read about it the more I want to stay with our evo
Swyped from my cm6
I took the plunge cause I couldn't get a hold of a replacement EVO. I really liked it at first but then all the negatives present themselves. The GPS is a HUGE deal for me and the image retention that I experienced was a deal breaker. I wish I took pictures of the the retention but the only camera I had was on the Epic.
I couldn't believe I found an EVO again. My new EVO came with 2.2 already on it.

This was the reason I returned my AT&T Captivate and switched to the EVO. Samsung claimed that the GPS was fixed in the Epic. Thanks for confirming that I made the right decision.
Yeah I've had my EVO since launch day June 4th, coming from the Touch Pro 2 I was honestly thinking of taking it back with in my 30 days and holding off for the Epic as well. Good god am I happy I didn't now. Even though I'm currently waiting on my 2nd replacement so in all my 3rd one since launch, it still beats all the bulls*** problems the Epic has. I mean image retention? really? The biggest deal breaker of them all has to be the fact that it's a SAMSUNG though. F*** SAMSUNG! HTC for life! I've been nothing but happy with HTC since the 6700, to the Mogul, to the Touch Pro, Touch Pro 2 and now my amazing EVO =]

You know what, I was playing with my friends Epic this past Saturday, for about 4 hours, and I never got a lock on the gps, during those four hours.
meh, aesthetically the evo wins in art design. too sleek, too minimal, light red/chrome accents.... love it.
never liked samsung's cellphone designs or their logo.
would like to have the improved graphics capabilities in the evo though.
The screen issue should have been expected lol. I bet the hardware keyboad would be nice to have but I am getting better with this on screen keyboard. The multi-touch droid x keyboard is nice for landscape and swype is great for portrait.
Samsung still makes crappy phones I guess lol. On another note I have never said I "love this phone" as many times as I have with the Evo. Im afraid to upgrade to the next best thing. I feel like a freaking power house with the Evo. Yeah there are other phones with the same or better specs but man this phone just does it all and does it all well. The FPS is arguably the biggest down side and I havnt had any issues with that yet. I do have it unlocked to almost 60 FPS though with CM6.
Epic Fail
Epic Fail!!
I carry both at all times and love them both...although the evo is my main.
I got the Epic the other day, had it for about 6 days, then returned it today and put myself on the waiting list for a White EVO 4G. I got a free EVO from Google's developer seeding program, and it is starting to have that "white spot" where the B on the soft keyboard is - and it's driving me crazy. Since I was given a complimentary EVO, I cannot have it serviced. So, White EVO 4G for me it is.
The EVO is a one of a kind device. The battery drain and TIME WITHOUT SIGNAL issues on the Epic are a dealbreaker. The GPS sucks, yeah, but it still WORKS. The screen door effect on the screen sucks but oh man is that screen beautiful. The hardware keyboard is good but I found myself using Swype 90% more of the time with the Epic.
HTC makes some solid stuff, and this is definitely a solid phone. The Epic 4G had major creaking issues, instantly out of the box - and that is just inexcusable for a $249 phone. The EVO is better built than the Epic and it costs .. less? Hmm..
Anyhow, obviously we're all different, but the battery drain issues were too much for me.
Im currently in the process of switching to Sprint from tmobile and looking into these two phones. Im coming from the samsung vibrant which should be an easy transition to the epic but i dont now if i can deal with the keyboard. Ive been playing around with my freinds evo alot and LOVE the size. 4.3 in display is awesome. Most people think 4in is just right but im one of those guys that think bigger is better .
Here are my pros for both
Epic
FAR better screen.
Better battery life.
Far better 3d perfromance
Slightly Better processor
Evo
Awsome 4.3 screen size
Better Development support
Dual LED
Better design/look
Leaning towards the evo right now only because im not a keyboard guy.
I would add to your pros list:
Epic
Far better video recording and dedicated shutter button
Evo
Froyo
Sense copy/paste
BTW, battery life on the Epic, depending on the user, is anywhere from a lot better to a lot worse than the Evo. The issue is the SAMOLED screen and the increased power consumption it needs to produce whites. If you watch a lot of video, especially movies with dark scenes, the battery will last a good while. But if you primarily surf the net and those pages are pretty much black text on white background, your battery experience will be worse. So battery life is a YMMV. Some reviewers thought it was better than the Evo, but Anandtech uses internet surfing to gauge battery life, and it was significantly shorter than the Evo when using 3G (but a skosh higher over 4G). The Evo lasted much longer over wifi.

Actually when I was testing the epic, fps2d showed <45fps. Tested on 3-4 phones in the sprint store.
I have had several Samsung devices. The i760, The Moment etc and EVERY one of them has GPS issues that Samsung "tries" in vain to fix down the road.
It is just frightening how you can count on some companies to make the same mistakes over and over again!
Just curious, does the Epic have that same "cheap plastic" feel that the other Galaxy S phones have? One thing I love about the EVO is its solid, heavy feeling.

Its more solid than the vibrant, but it still feels lighter than evo. I guess its personal preference. Since i got used to the vibrant is feels great. First time i picked up the evo it felt to heavy, and because of its size i could really feel it when I put it in my pocket, but loved how it looked. But after playing with it for most of that day i got used to it and had no problems

the keyboard does feel cheap. didn't like the buttons at all.

I told you so..

just doesn't quite say it.
Like I've said in my previous posts, when it comes to samsung supporting ANY of their phones, well you don't get any. They make buggy phones which have problems after a few days of use, and then instead of recalling or updating kernels/roms, they just totally ignore the customers and run off with the money. The "legal" alternative of scamming.
And they have done the same with samsung epic.
http://www.talkandroid.com/13036-samsung-epic-already-having-issues-on-launch-day/
It's not the issues per say, but it's the fact that they KNEW about the issue, and ignored it. I know evo had some issues from the start as well, but this was usually do to a bad batch and htc didn't know about this until mass release. BUT samsung knew about this issue before they even released the phone.
tl;dr: samsung is a crap company when it comes to phones, they don't support their products, and will screw you over when they get the chance.

no, not really. People are comparing evo to samsung epic, and to me it seems like a right forum to warn everyone about the problems with the epic. I had a chance yesterday to trade my evo for a samsung + 25$. I was thinking about it since my evo has a broken 4g, and the only reason i thought about it was the processor speeds, but after reading that article upon many others, I was re-assured that I will never buy another samsung phone.
my favorite are all the posts of people saying "i bought the phone an hour ago it pwns it is so leeet" now give them a few dys they will be the ones going back and shouting "omg this phone sucks my back button doesnt work ... wth screw you samsung".
I just have to say this....and YES the pun is intended.
EPIC Fail!
Well... I guess this isn't really any different then the screen seperation issue and the light spot on the lcd over the processor and the power button crack on Evo's. I am sure testers ran into all those problems. it is a matter of what is going to cost more; retooling and redesigning a few pieces of the phone and replacing it on 100,000 handsets, or replacing a few thousand handsets that run into the issue.
I'm sure my numbers aren't really in the ballpark, but you get my drift. Every company has to make decisions like this.

I don't buy in the lcd separation bs. I saw people take pictures of claiming about separation and it looks fine to me. If it was separating, then the touch screen wouldn't work as well and you would be experiencing more problems than "dust settling under the screen".
As for the hairline crack on the power button, most of the people that had it, didnt even know about it. Sprint techs probably didn't know about it as well.
Actually, this is a whole other ballpark. You could argue that the Evos were pushed out the door for launch, but Samsung released the first Galaxy S phone in the beginning of June in Europe, and every issue Epic users are running into now were discovered back then. Three months ago. Three months and no fixes for their new phone. They knowingly released a defective phone, will probably never fix it, and will move on to their next phone in January. So long suckers! Oh, and watch this space for complaints about the keyboard Oreo. The only reason this is new is because the Epic is the first Galaxy phone with a keyboard. I mean, you didn't think they'd get that working properly out of the gate, did you?
Sorry for all the FUD, but I'll probably have Gingerbread on my Evo before the Epic gets froyo.

samsung couldn't (and still can't) do flip phones right (had a couple, they would always break; switched to sanyo, i've had that sucker for >4 years and I still bring it out of the box as a backup from time to time, and everything still works on it), why would we expect them to do smart phones any better? they just do not make quality product. burn in on the screens, wow - basically one of your hot selling points is the AMOLED screen, and it has huge burn in problems in less than a month? and they are mass producing these things? no epic for me, and no samsung AMOLED for me on any phone, thanks.
love my evo. no, HTC is not perfect, not saying that at all. but they do make a better quality product than sammy any day, hands down.
Quick off-topic question. I am seriously considering the EVO. However, I need Wifi to work. Are there still issues with poor Wifi signal on the Evo or has this been resolved?
After the froyo update, I went from 2 bars on my couch sitting 20 feet from my router to full bars and I can now go into the bedroom and still get signal. I used to switch to my Diamond and use Opera Mini whenever I was in the bedroom, but that's no longer an issue. 3G signal got stronger as well.
Or was there a different wifi issue you were referring to?
Yeah, WiFi is big for me too and I noticed a while ago it seemed to be better than when I first bought the device. But I thought this was done some time ago. But yeah, WiFi is good.

same thing, getting full bars in two rooms down. About 2 or so bars throughout the house.
After some research I went with the EVO. I have no problems with wifi throughout my house or any other issues with this phone. I came from the Samsung Moment and that phone was a nightmare, no updates to fix the known issues, they deemed it EOL after the 2.1 update. Even with a ROM rooted it was bad. I am half expecting the same with the epic.
Delete this post, I posted in the wrong forum (FAIL).
I purchased the Epic to compare it to the Evo. It really is a great phone, but I think I'm going to stick with my EVO. There were small issues I had that may have been no problems for others, but to me they were dealbreakers. The screen truly does wonders and makes the EVo appear washed out. However, the size is noticeable when compared to the EVO. They realistically could have kept the screen the same size as the EVO had they made the "SAMSUNG" on the front smaller. The email would also never update without a manual refresh, the touch screen buttons are hardly responsive. The email was a big issue to me. However, the biggest deal breaker was the battery. My battery life on the Epic was worse than the EVO. Not a huge deal since Im always near a charger. However, the battery would take hours to charge. My evo could be completely shut down and charge from 10%-100% in about an hour tops. The EPIC took several hours.
That said, the phone is incredibly snappy stock. I would love to see what developers can do with it, but I dont think I have the patience to wait. I'm a regular flashoholic on my EVO.

Epic/sprint rant

Im sorry but i need somewhere to blow of my mind.
Sprint sucks. I hate them. There service is getting worse and worse. I stick with them only because verizon credit fee is alot att has a 2gb dat plan and tmobile only has edge in most places. Sprints idea of service is by havijng no service with 2g and 3g... so there for my battery sucks no matter what phone i get because it is always searching for service.
So what's sprints answer to that? Build more 3g towers so we can get service or how about 2g so we can at least make phone call? No. They added another 4g radio that comsumes more battery then ever and has it in 18 cities originally about 8 and then we pay (which is understandable so they can get more money to build 4g) but is utterly stujpid how they are going about it.. at least tombile lit up most place with hsdpa before releaseing a phone and verizon im sure is going to do the same thing....
Now for the epic.
I had the evo for about a week and i miss the kick stand and stability and the brightness of the screen... i also miss the custom roms but that will take time i know.
What i hate about the epic is the screen is way to f ing bright that i can't look at it at night tikme. It honestly pisses me off. And then we you go to a white screen it gets even brighter. Wtf is the problem with that. I can't use my phone half of the time unoless i tur on a light cause my eyes burn me. Yes its better then the evo but the evo was muc more darker when needed.
I get even less service with this pphone then i did with my palm pre. My hero and my evo. and the phon us buggy as hell.
Im not trying to turn people away from the epic because i love it so much more then the evo. But sprints to fix this bugs fast or samsung.
They also need t fix the f up battery icon that you thbink your phone is fully charged and its really dying. Also the bug when let's say your phone is at 30 percent and you plug it in and leave in and reset it will boot back up at 70 percent. Then you have the phone charger that take 8 years to charge your phone and if you are using it forget it. It wont budge or may even die while charing.
Ill give it time for a radio update and a few patches to see what's good.
Also evo users or people scared to change or can't decide the evo was completely bugged when it first came out and the radio was worse then the epics one so don't think its cookies wth the evo either. They just updated it to tbere idea od pferection.

I understand it's a rant, but you're angry at sprint for expanding a newer service?
I think the bad connection has to do with where u live. Maybe sprint doesn't have good coverage where u live. I luckily an in a good coverage area and although I don't have 4g in my area I'm happy with my service. Perhaps u should call sprint and they will give u a free airrave and maybe that will help a bit.

Sprint is a company..making towers to blanket the entire population is not economical...if anything 4g is good because wimax is cheaper to deploy thus more possibility of getting access once added. We all wish that Cellphone companies were like energy companies where there was only 1 network and you get to choose your provider... unfortunately that is not the case :/
I agree with the person above to get sprint to give you a free 3g airwave.

LOL, you been here for a while too and never post here either, did you feel inclined to do so.... I know I did.
Too bright of a display? go ahead and call Samsung and tell them that the main selling feature of the whole SAMOLED display isn't working for you. They will just tell you to buy a different phone. You do realize the screen is bright on the epic because the screen is incomparable between the two as far as quality right? You know 16777216 colors Samoled equal a more crisp vibrant/"brighter!" display VS a 65536 colors, TFT washed out mess the evo has.
Every carrier has dead spots, Sorry your in one but it happens. I have no service at my house, but neither does att and verizon and I am not at the point where I have a nervous breakdown when the phone has no data service.
On the battery, well working at a Verizon store and I would say 7 out of 10 customer with pda's come in complaining about battery life. I hear the famous "I have to charge my phone every night" complain in my sleep. Big processors, lots of ram, and big screens drain batteries.
While I been on xda I have had two vouge's, htc diamond, htc touch pro 2. Each one of those had a 65536 color display and was hell bent on getting an evo but every time I went to order one it was sold out. Went to a radioshack to buy a router and saw the tmobil galaxy on display and was mesmerized when I saw that display. It was like something I never tasted before, As an HTC fan I never looked into samsung. After seeing that thing, did some research and found it it best it in every way so I bought it, and yes the battery sucks even in good service just like every other phone I have had. Solution, car charger + extra/extended battery, problem solved.
(Hardcore windows user here, who is breaking apart roms that minute the phone comes out of the box I would tell you the EPIC is a great phone. Even with a crappy battery I will recommend this to everybody. Second day with it and cant put it down)
The battery life isn't even that terrible. With google talk + google voice turned on and reasonable usage, I can easily make it through the day without having to charge. I turned off automatic brightness and that pretty much did the trick for me.
Yeah I felt inclined to post cause I get pissed at people that ***** like crazy....lol
Anyways, I got an evo and rarely have 4g,and barely have 3g at my place, but the evo gets better reception than any other phone I've had. And when I go to my cousin's for the weekend it is a dead area with barely any 3g, so what do I do while I'm there, go into wifi. I know he is going to hate paying the extra money for am epic and not getting the full befits. I never ***** and moan about it....ya know why, cause even in 3g I get what ever music I want, when I want for free. My first android device and I can pull in 26 cds in a day without 4g. Yeah ide say I know how to get my moneys worth. And if your wondering, tunee, and swarm coupled with just downloading the torrent file from stock broswer........ Yes I do love raping sprints data.

Its about the same as my rhodium, between 3/5pm have to charge it but I abuse my phone so thats normal.
@ the OP.... No issues on battery indicator/ charging here, even the gps is working fine for me...... Then again waiting for the gps to lock doesn't bother me......u know just like any standalone gps...
This is what i mean by my battery percent it doesnt look like 49 percent and the battery icon looks like 75.
Im not some stupid look person trying to start something im 22. I have been with sprint for 4 years now. Did you see any of my thought process i put.into my thread. It sounded like i have a solid back ground.
And i wish my phone lasted a day. If it did. I wouldn't complain. I have plug it out at 6am and charge it at 11 then plug it out by 2 and charge it by 8 and its alot annoying because of the slow charge.
Don't jump at me like im stupid.

I don't like to say anything if it's not nice most of the time, but seriously? Make up your mind, you hate a lot of the features but you love it so much. I can understand the bad signal pissing you off, I have virtually no signal at my job, so 8 hours of my day i go on random roam signals here and there, but at the same time as someone already pointed out, most companies have dead spots. Period.
Everywhere else I get 4 - 5 Sprint bars. Heck at some spots I have to turn Wi-Fi off to run off of Sprint's 3G cause it's better. Point being, most phones on most companies will do what they're supposed to most places. As mentioned again, batteries can only do so much. Think about what you do with the phone any given day, it's amazing a battery can even do what it can. I can use the phone moderately to heavy and still make it with about 20 - 30% left at the end of the day.
Lastly, do you even know what the biggest selling point of the Epic was? Besides the insane processor, and full keyboard, 4G and other nooks and crannies, the Screen was the biggest selling point. Do me a favor and switch to the Coral live wallpaper, and then play with that for a few mins, hopefully that helps make my point. Try the same on the evo if you can or any other phone without Amoled

The problem is you are making yourself sound stupid. This isn't the place for a crying and complaining thread. Honestly, no one wants to hear it, and it makes you look like a big baby. You are foremost complaining about the flagship feature on the Galaxy S phones (The screen brightness, SAMOLED). You know there are options and settings to control that the way you like? Stop throwing a fit, and acting like a child, and simply put; no one would treat you like one.
I started laughing out loud. What a moron this guy is. Complaining that the screen burns his eyes because it's too bright! Something is seriously ****ed up with your head man. Everyone I show mine to says "WOW that's amazingly bright and crisip, what is it?"
I sometimes wonder about these types of people who will actually type out something so stupid and dumb and then press "post"!
Do they not realize that almost all of their complaints could be fixed if they actually put some effort into them?
1. turn the brightness down dumbass
2. call sprint and get an airave, or go to the store and get one.
Instead they want to come here and waste their time typing it out. 22 years old and sounds like my 12 year old bratty sister when she has pms.
I was thinking about swapping my Epic today for an EVO- it's a great phone, but I am very much over the whole physical keyboard thing. I can type much faster on an iPhone screen than any physical keyboard (probably just my lack of practice on a physical keyboard), and I'm about as fast using Swype and some of the other keyboard apps I've downloaded in the past week.
But I wish the phone was a bit thinner, and I really wish it had more a solid feel when pushing the physical buttons on the side. Because of the slider, when I push the side buttons, it begins to slide on the track a bit, which is to be expected from a slider phone. It just lacks that nice solid feel of the iPhone or EVO. And the 4.3" screen just feels like the right size, whereas the Epic is a tad small in comparison.
The two main reasons I didn't switch to the EVO, besides the current lack of stock, is the battery life and the lackluster graphics chip. I could get over both of them- right now I'm very happy with the Epic in terms of battery life, and the phone flies compared with any other phone I've used, except maybe the iPhone 4.
Not sure if I'll keep the Epic or switch to the EVO before the month is out, but it is a nice phone, and I really can't see people complaining passionately about it- there really isn't that much to not like.

Evo switchers are you satisfied?

I just want to know if you are happy about giving up your Evo and getting the Epic or if you regret the switch? Also please tell of any other experiences you've had with it so far
Yes. I still miss Sense sometimes but I calmed that itch with launcherpro full and fancy widget. It doesn't give you the full sense experience with core apps modified but its good enough for me. Hardware is amazing compared to the evo
Better screen
Better camera
Better hd video recording
Cpu/gpu amazing!!!!
I thought I was not gonna like the keyboard but it was so useful for my university classes (I even coded some c++ homework assignments on the epic and ran it on my schools computer)
Gps is still a downer... it works but unreliable
Overall, I don't regret the switch
Yes, but I miss the 4G speeds I had on my EVO and HDMI. Had more resources with HTC dev team too.
I was one of the people that got the HTC EVO 4G on the day it was released... man was that a big mistake. Honestly, it was one of the worst phones I've ever used. I hated the build quality, it was super flaky. I actually went through 2 EVOs within my first two weeks or so because the USB port stopped charging.
Of course, yeah at first when I got the EVO I thought it was cool and all but the coolness wore off pretty quickly when I started to see all the many flaws it had, to name a few, the FPS cap (FINALLY fixed), build quality, very laggy with HTC Sense UI, things like that. I eventually took the phone back because I actually paid full price so that I wouldn't use up my upgrade and it definitely wasn't worth wasting my money on. After having an EVO, I really started to look down on HTC. They used to be the only brand of Android phone I would ever get, but now I won't touch them ever again. I went back to my HTC Hero and after that went semi-bad I traded it in for a Samsung Moment just to not deal with HTC anymore.
Once I heard about the Epic 4G I was stoked, I thought this phone is gonna beat the **** outta the EVO... I was right, I am so glad I switched! The only thing I wasn't looking forward to with the Epic was having a built in keyboard and I rarely ever use it, ever, but I guess its still nice to have on occasion. Don't believe when people say, "If you want a hardware keyboard, get the Epic, if you don't get the EVO...", I didn't want a hardware keyboard but I still got the Epic just because the hardware overall is much much better!
Anyways, sorry for the long post but yeah, I switched from the EVO and I will never look back.
Still have the EVO but it sits on the shelf now. I haven't looked back either. Screen is so much bigger on the EVo, but camera and video capture is so bad on the EVo The keyboard is nice though I don't use it at times. Epic very satisfied
I just made the switch and don't regret it one bit. When this phone gets froyo it is going to smoke the evo. With baked rom this phone is amazing compared to evo.
I have not used my keyboard once yet but it will be nice with snesoid and etc.
Overall very happy with my switch.

Yes. Epic currently has an upload speed capped at 150 kbps. I have an evo and an epic right here and I just did a speed test on both.
Evo: 1570/646
Epic: 1404/116
Other than that, I generally prefer the epic. Less laggy, even after the evo's 30 fps cap fix. Better gpu. Screen is slightly smaller but less washed out. I don't even use the keyboard for typing usually but it's great for games. The only other things better about the evo are community and vendor support. And the kickstand of course.

i just switched from the evo to epic. seems pretty good so far. screen diff noticable though, colors better. update in a week.
it sucks at home i usually top out at 600 but around town or even at my buddies down the street we top out at 1.7mbps

I'm more than satisfied with the Epic. I had the Evo for 29 days, so I got a good impression of the device and its faults.
The smooth responsiveness of the Epic is great compared to the Evo, which was laggy at often choppy (using menus, scrolling apps list etc). The Evo had touch response lag also, the Epic does not.
The screen on the Epic is also a nice improvement over the Evo. Being .3" smaller is worth the brilliant colors and black blacks of Super AMOLED goodness.
Gaming on the Epic is also far better than the Evo, everything just runs smoothly, and it's responsive. The Evo always felt like it was struggling in 3D games, and the touch input lag made some games un-enjoyable.
Having the keyboard is not a major deal for me, but it's nice that it's there for certain situations. I use Swype most of the time.
Battery life is better also.
The Epic has its faults too, but to me, they are less egregious than the Evos.

Really? The battery life is BETTER? how is that possible. If you use the phone (epic) normally at all it barley lasts a full work day and it certianly wouldn't last into the afterwork party time which is when it's VERY important!!

try a different kernel.
My Epic easily lasts me all day long.... but for those times when I'm doing heavy duty movie watching or game playing, I keep a spare battery handy. Small and easy to carry around.
It definitely lasts longer than the EVO's did, even with a different kernel.
So far I'm much happier with the Epic than I was with the EVO....... but I'm a speed freak and the EVO's processor was just too outdated for me.

Why are questioning what he said about battery life? Are disappointed that he said the battery life is better? You seem to really not like the EPIC. So take it back. Why do you keep the phone? Are you here just trolling to be negative or are you here to contribute to the community?
I got the evo on release day. It was my first smart phone. I thought it was bad ass. I dropped it in the toilet and then my problems started. I called sprint to issue an insurance claim. I told them I lost it. They told me I didn't have insurance on the phone. After fighting with them for a a week about it they told me they if I signed I new 2 year contract I cab get another evo as I upgraded again. They also credited my account 150. I couldn't find another evo any where. Then I found out bout the epic. I haven't looked back yet.

I got my evo on 6/12, just picked up my epic 9/25. It was long enough for me to realize that while the evo is quite baller, especilly coming from the G1, it was undercooked.
We all know the problems it had/has. The one that gets me the most though is having all that power and still having to cap the framerate. That, and the insane compression of mms images, but that's a sense issue.
So far I'm REAL ****ing happy with it. I really missed a good hw keyboard. The screen and camera are mighty impressive and touchwhiz isn't nearly as offensive/intrusive as sense (its more like a theme imo) when you get adw on it.
This thing is going to set the standard once it receives 2.2.

[Q] Rooted Evo vs Rooted Epic

I searched through the forums quite a bit and even good but have yet to find anything specific. I'm not sure which phone to get since I can not find a rooted comparison.
Please read about my HTC Hero and my original thoughts here:
jpklink.blogspot.com
Main Points:
Weight and size are not an issue: Glass screen is a +
Price is not an issue.
Standard Mini USB charging is a +
Battery life is not so important.
Texting Speed is 100% most important item - my hero can not keep up with my fingers and it is beyond frustrating.
I know this is the Epic forum so I can't say I don't expect you to be bias, but it would be nice to hear anything at all. Just wanted to hear how the phones compare as BOTH rooted devices with all speed benefits.
As of now the epic has an issue where it will miss keys on the physical keyboard every so often. Txlexting speed is also very important to me (I have an epic) and I have been dissappinted with the physical keyboard to say the least. That being said, the evo does not even have a physical keyboard and you could use any keyboard from the evo on the epic. The app "Smart keyboard" is the best of all that I have tried. The screen on the epic is also substantially better than the evo. The evo gets updates before the epic because it is an htc phone so that is always something to consider. Good luck.

If you fancy yourself with modding then an Evo is a clear cut winner. There are much more Roms, Mods, and source codes are always released first for HTC phones. Samsung has a history of not really supporting their devices. Epic is no exception. And if you look at the news today in the Android world, signs point to Samsung focusing on supporting Windows 7 phones in 2011 while Android will slowly move to the back seat. http: //phandroid.com/2010/11/22/samsung-focusing-more-on-windows-7-in-2011-but-will-it-matter/

Yeah you can tell how tarded they are by them having the hottest phone on the planet and neglecting it.
MLHickey:
Actually, I completely forgot to mention, I don't know that I would use the keyboard much anyway. I guess if it was there, I may start to use it, but I like the touch screen keyboard, I'm quite fast with them. In fact I still use T9 a LOT, especially while I'm driving. So as far as the keyboard goes, not a huge pro/con for me. When I mention texting speeds, I just want the phone to be able to keep up with me. My experience with the HTC hero is bad in the sense that I'll be waiting every few words for the phone to catch up so I can check for errors before continuing to type.
imwillzillla:
Those are some really good points! So if I root the Evo with a custom rom, the speeds will be comparable to a rooted epic? And how come HTC stuff comes out first/sooner? Just because the phone has been out longer?
Windows 7... ew. Those are definitely some good points. Do HTC updates and that matter much if I'm installing a custom ROM?
Thanks guys.
Note: I heard the Evo now comes stocked with something that prevents it from being rooted and still today they've yet to break it. Any truth to this?

Great news. I've been leaning towards the evo... looks like it's decided. Thanks again MLHickey.
Last note is, should I wait for early 2011 in case HTC releases something crazy. I mean, I can live on my HTC hero a few more months if I need to.
Just thought as an epic owner Im obligated to reply. The choice is a hard one, but the epic is faster, a better screen (even if slightly smaller) and since its basically stock android doesnt need roms like cynagen to be super fast and its only slightly thicker then the evo. You also get better battery life on the epic.
As for the keyboard, its really not that bad, and a keyboard is better then nothing at times when touch typing just isnt working out as planned.
I had the same hard decesion and luckily when I was visiting home a few weeks ago I got to play with my parents evo. Don't let the benchmarks fool you, the epic is much faster, plus that screen, you get size shock from the evo, but color and contrast shock from the epic. Plus you can install htcs awesome on screen keyboard on the epic. Its the best of all worlds in my book. The evo will have faster updates though, but really.. updates are almost superficial because by time android 2.2 is unsupported should they stop there you will likely be getting a new phone. Gps might or might not work better on the evo, some epics are fine, others aren't.
Just my 2 cents.

I'm not tryna sound biased but u gotta be kidding me.. maybe ur gf's usage is much higher.. honestly 4 of my friends have evo's and whenever we're chilling on either of our houses, they fight over the charger.. although my epic is rooted and has custom rom+kernel and their evo doesn't but even b4 i rooted mine i had much better battery life..
The keyboard on this thing is not great, but it beats having none. WPM will not be high with this keyboard, although accuracy is not bad. Still, coming from a Hero, I really like having a keyboard now.
The main gripe is Samsung's poor support, small ROM, and the gps on this thing.
If you text a lot, this should still be your choice as it is faster than virtual keyboards.

Lets be a smarta$$ about it.
Anyways.
No. I have asked about the Evo's battery life and I quite frequently hear it hardly makes it through the day from people who DO own them. I've had mine unplugged with moderate use and plenty of calls since 7am and its at 40% right now at 11PM. Now to be fair.. my Epic is rooted with the battery sucking processes from Sprint/Samsung cut out, the Evo's i've heard about are stock. If both were rooted you'd probably cut similar results.
They both have 1500MAH batteries, they will both be roughly the same if you cut the fat out of each I imagine.
As for the screen, yeah the colors are not as accurate, but you're not going to notice, they have a cooler look to them which bothers the heck out of graphics designers and the like heh heh but really.. it's still stunning in comparison to the evo, but thats just MY opinion.
You really need to go into the Sprint store and play with both as much as you can.... you really can't go wrong with either of them and their pro's and con's split pretty evenly.
1) for the keyboard issue..try disabling Swype and use the hardware kb.
2) Epic even with the custom roms we have is doing fairly well...I mean take all the custom roms on the EVO and the Epic and you'll notice there isn't too much difference...most of the advantages EVO had was gotten from the Nexus One which hopefully we will get from the Nexus S.
3) You can do a bunch with custom roms on the EVO to make it run smoother but It'll never run as smooth as the epic.
4) The colors can't be more accurate on the EVO because its only 64k colors..if anything Droid X has probably the most accurate colors...but since EVO is only 64k colors it won't be accurate...the Super AMOLED tends to be mroe blue because the blue dies out the fastest...over time it balances itself out...on my device though if I set it to 100% brightness its white as I lower the brightness it turns grayish..but thats what lowering brightness is suppose to do...
5) Yeah.. texting while driving is bad...
6) Battery life varies by your usage..overall though if you configure it best you can on both devices Epic will win.

You really need to go into the Sprint store and play with both as much as you can.... you really can't go wrong with either of them and their pro's and con's split pretty evenly.

i had to read that twice, he wasnt talkin about you only having two cents... he was referring to owning both phones... just kinda seemed like u took that the wrong way...
Personally, I never got to actually play around with an evo but I will say these things about my epic:
The keyboard, though sometimes annoying, is a great bonus to have for those who text/email/im/fb/whatever a lot. And you can bring the htc keyboard over to the epic as well.
The battery life on custom roms/kernels seems to be better when compared to most evo scenarios (I don't have an evo so don't quote me)
The color temps can be fixed using voodoo color.
The phone DEFINITELY responds better to user input than the evo, hands down (probably due to the evo having so much bloat, and also due to the better built cortex processor)
Updates on the evo happen more quickly, this is very true. But our devs have done a great job fixing MOST of our major issues.
This is a big one that people seem to be failing to mention. The new froyo modems seem to FIX gps PERMANENTLY. I've been running wifi on my epic for days without a reboot and gps is on hot start (not using the cold start workaround) and every time I get a full lock within seconds (using gps status).
All in all, I love my epic and the way it runs thanks to our community, but if you want a more reliable manufacturer (and a community that isn't chock full of spoiled brats who's parents bought them the phone), go with the evo.
If you can deal with the slower updates and the forum nonsense, go with the epic.

Lol!
I think more kids end up with an epic over an evo just because of the keyboard. Look son it has a keyboard so you can type fast! "OMG L33T AHH! SWEET!" lol..
I wonder how many kids actually are on these forums when I was 12 I wasn't looking for ways to hack my cell phone... then again when I was 12 I think that Motorola "flip" phone that looked like something outta star trek was the most popular one for being so "portable". lol
uhm no, thats why there are sidekicks.. i doubt u will c a kid with an epic or evo..
