Moving Apps to SD Card - Nexus One General

I'm using Cyanogen 6.0 RC3 and I was just playing around with moving Apps around.
The moved my Flash Player to my SD card (total was 12mb, now it's 6/6) a couple of weeks ago, and I was bored and moved the App back from my SD card to my phone. Now there's a total of 12mb, but I cannot move the App back to the SD card. I've tried unistalling the App, and I can't seem to move the App back to the SD card.

Try pm setInstallLocation 2 from a terminal, and see if it helps?

Nope that didn't work - what exactly did I just do if I typed that in?

It changes the app install location.
0 = Auto (default)
1 = Phone
2 = SD

I've did that and unistalled the program, and re-installed it. Still under the "phone" memory.
Should I type in the command again, and set it as 0?
/edit
The program I'm trying to move to the SD card is Adobe Flash. I was playing around with the other apps, and I managed to move them to the SD card, back to the phone, and back to the SD card. Maybe there's a bug with Adobe Flash app?

I'm using move2sd enabler on a rooted stock 2.2 N1 and I'm able to move it. I did and found that flash wasn't working on the web. maybe it's just me but it's something to look into.

Tried that, and only a couple of apps could be moved (Flash wasn't there!). It's weird because originally it was on my SD card, and I was experimenting with it and moved it back to my phone. Then after that, I couldn't transfer it back to the SD card
It's 12 MB, which is pretty big so I'd like to swap it over!

that i dont know. i just use a card reader and format then depending on what build im using i wipe and start fresh
same thing happened to me last week on one of the dudes builds. My sd card was ruined. I tried to reformat it and then repartition it but it wouldnt let me repartition even though i deleted the old one. I messed with it for hours, before some one told me that it was ruined. all the transfering of info back and forth fried it i guess. I ended up buying a new one, this time class 6 (old one was class 2) I got it for 20 bucks (8gb) not to shabby of a price! sorry for your misfortune. Good luck

The same thing happened to me about 4 days ago, however Im running cyangones 3.4 Rom not the dudes, tell me ....were you running any themes at the time like the hero theme or any other? Are you using apps to sd as in do you have your sd card partitioned ? Im trying to figure out why this happened to me also, as of right now it has happened twice in 4 days then, I wiped my phone, reformatted / repartitioned my sd card and am not using any custome theme with cyanogens 3.4 rom and it seems to be ok. I only have a few apps right now because I want to make sure it doesnt happen again before I load up my sd card again with apps.
i had no themes and i was using app2sd. but i wasnt using any apps at the time.. just thought i would ad my 2 cents

ok
I reformatted then put files back on G1(including the dudes cupcake 1.3r2(cant give up on the perfect mod lol)) then wiped and Alt-s....only diffrence this time is that i am gonna use appmanager and not put everything on class 2 8 gig so it will not burn out...and hopefully it want destroy my sd card.Thankx to everyone you guys were a big help.
very interesting topic....
same here:
I tried with 3 other sdcards, 2 of them are 100% ok, NO GO, doesnt work anymore. First I thought that my G1 reader has a problem, some time it works, some time not. Im on dudes 12b with apps2sd. The fact that no card works tells me:
- Phone error
or
- Software problem (really strange if this is the problem)
I wipe right now and will tell you if the card works again....
i had similar problem last week when switching from cyan 3.4 to dudes 1.3 i first tried just doing an alt - w and that gave me a lot of errors and force closes so i started over and reformatted/repartitioned my sd. Now my sd card doesnt read when i plug into pc but still works in phone. everytime i want to change/edit sd i have to pull sd out and use an adapter..it sucks cuz the lil sd latch is such a pain to open and close on the g1..
ok wipe didnt anything... really strange thing I can do nothing anymore, card is not readable (in pc it is readable, but not in my g1)....
Config:
Dudes 1.2b
No themes, no extras
APPS2SD, 500 MB EXT Partition
8 GB Class 6 Card
If anyone has a hint for me, any help is welcome.
could this have something to do with apps2sd... this is happening to me as well, and it only started when i switched from jac 1.4 to the dudes 1.3rc1 it works good for about 24 hours sans the bluetooth issue. then the next time i check the phone its all whacked out and says to reformat the card.
Found this, hope that helps, unfortunately I dont have an external reader here:
source: http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f7/unable-to-retain-formatting-on-sd-card-17338/index2.html
Turns out this is no more than an annoyance affecting the 1.5 JF builds. (not sure it's exclusive to those).
Anyway, long story short. The phone will always complain about the partitioning on the sd card and offer to "fix" the problem by re-formatting.
The key to the problem is to reboot the phone after the card has been re-partitioned. This will make the annoying pop-up dissapear and keep the partitioning table as defined.

Rerun apps to SD, uninstall reinstall all listed apps.
I had had this happen also. But I think most of it was my doing. I have a bad habit of not removing device safely after I copy files, I just use the eject button lol.. my p.c. even told me that I had removed usb device before the files were finshed bing prossed.. well whatever happend it didn't fry my card I just had to reformat it and. Run martins great skrip over agin and it was good to go.. I even went to buy a new usb cable just in case lol .. on hero/rosie running smooth ; )

[TIP] Force all apps to SD on FROYO

I ran a cross this little tip to force all apps to be installed on SD.
Unlock move to SD card for existing apps:
adb shell
pm setInstallLocation 2
I'm not able to move installed app on SD, the option "Move to SD card" is greyed... any idea ?
Remember people, apps that need root will not work

I don't think Froyo uses Fat32 for apps to sd not the ext partition.

That brings up an interesting question.........
If this update is for non-rooted phones, how/why should we be concerned if it is partitioned correctly?
Shouldn't it be done with the update.......
how?
Where do you place that command.
As application installation on SD is natively supported by Froyo, I assumed that I don't need to partition the card...

Only my non protected apps have moved from my internal memory (which is good enough for me really).
Re: Force all apps to SD on FROYO
How were you able move them? The option to do that is grayed out for all applications on my phone. I heard developers have to give permission to move their applications to the SD card first.
-------------------------------------
Sent from my Motorola Razr.
I was also only able to move my non-protected apps
So to clarify this, after executing the command all non protected apps will be moved to sd, or do we choose which ones to move from the applications menu. Are we able to move apps back to the phone for speed?
Can we reverse the command?
Thanks

With the abd command? Or on stock Froyo?
Where are the apps being installed in the SD card ?, I see that my internal memory is going down and the apps are installed in the SD card based on what the system says, thanks

FAT32 doesn't support the required permission flags for root apps.
Apps need to be rewritten to support installation to SD under FroYo as it's not just using symlinks as with A2SD.
After initiating the command on the original post you have to click each app and move to sdcard.
A shortcut to reinstall all apps at once can be done in ADB
Code:
cd /data/app
for app in *.apk; do pm install -r $app; done
** Note
I used this for unofficial apps2sd so after switching to froyo using the command should also do the same

Getting a new SD card. Q's about App2SD, Swap

I'm currently running cyanogenmod 5.0.8, and my 8GB A-Data class 6 SD card should be here soon.
I downloaded a program called swapper 2 and it seems to be working. When I get the new SD card should I stick with this program or do the partition method? Does anyone have experience with this program compaired to the other methods?
I also have Comp cache enabled too. Any thoughts on if I should use both or one?
For App2SD I noticed in the settings you can enable it there but its grayed out. I imagine once I put the new SD card in there it will partition the space for it then?
Thanks for the help. If you have any links to some good info that would be great too.
I think the general consensus is that utilizing a swap partition is much more efficient than creating a swap file on fat32, which figures. Just out of curiosity, does your homescreen reload?
EDIT: Just noticed your A2SD question, it's greyed out because you need to add an ext2/3/4 partition. That's for unofficial Apps2SD which is a hack-job, Google has implimented an official A2SD method in FroYo, however the developer has to specify whether you can Apps2SD-ify their app (I assume because their method moves the apk to the sdcard which can be shared with others, increasing the chance of piracy).

Not sure what you mean by 'does your homescreen reload'. It usually does reappear when I exit an app, but sometimes all the icons/widgets are gone and I have to restart to get them back. Although this happened before I used swapper 2 aswell. doesnt happen very offten.

Good to know that not every app can be put on the sd card. I didn't know that. When I get the new SD card and format a ~512mb ext4 partition; will it automatically move the apps to the sd card, will I have to reinstall the apps to move them, or is that grayed out option (app2sd in settings) allow me to choose (rather attempt, if the program allows for it) which apps to put to the sd card?
Thanks!

Yeah I mean when it has to redraw everything when it gets kicked out of memory. It used to happen every time I excited an app on CM5 and CM6 (nightly build), but now that I've added a 32mb swap file with swapper2 (it doesn't like my partition :'( ) they've all disappeared.

The ext/hackjob method will let you keep any apps on SD
I'm not sure if it will move them for you, but you can physically move the files yourself. It's just a couple of commands in the terminal in a reboot (wont get in to it now, it's 3AM and I'm tired, so I'll probably get it wrong ).
I would like to say that I've always used a partition. In the case that swap kills my SDCard, I would like it to be a certain fraction of the SDCard that dies, not a block here and a block there. I think that's more ocd, though.

Gingerbread and stock free Internal Storage

I returned my Nexus One to the stock shipping image.
I had 106MB of free internal storage.
Updated to 2.3.3 with the file linked from this thread and now have 90.99MB free internal storage.
No Google account synced, bone stock. Is this the normal amount or should I be looking somewhere to clear up more space?
Funny, I had around 30 before the update, and after, I had 45. I noticed that Adobe Flash was moved to the SD card for me. I was pretty happy.
Mine also increased. Also going through my biggest apps, moving them back to phone, then moving them back to sd card yielded some gains (guesssing Gingerbread is able to store more on SD card than Froyo).
Saved a few megs between skype/dropbox/documents to go.

connect your phone to computer, run ADB shell.
type "pm setInstallLocation 2"
almost everything will be moveable.
Thanks to Rusty.
After installing Gingerbread I did a factory reset and did not restore my old apps automatically. I had around 160MB of internal storage. Right now I have 118MB left after installing some apps.
The new A2SD api is epic, I have Flash, Firefox and Google Earth taking up less than 300Kb between them

Agreed. It is so awesome!
So, what does "pm setInstallLocation 2" do, exactly?
As far as I understood, it moves Flash to SD - even though you cannot manually do it via the App Manager.
What about the other Apps? Will it also move those to SD? And what about the apps (e.g. Angry Birds) that are already on SD? Will it optimize those? From what I saw, when moving Angry Birds back to phone and back on SD manually (App Manager) I gained >1MB from that alone. Will the "pm setInstallLocation 2" do this for apps like that as well?
It sets the default install location for your apps to the SD card (0 = auto, 1 = internal storage, 2 = SD card).
Also it enables almost any (PayPal, I'm looking at you!) existing installed app on the phone to be transferred over the the SD card
I moved a few back and forth, with no change. Looks like it's only flash for me.
There are still many apps that cannot be moved to SD. Facebook, twitter, maps, gmail, to name a few. I hear with CM7 you can even move those.
System apps you've updated are stuck on internal storage.
I tend to stick the updated versions back on /system.
So removing the updates, say to facebook, would allow me to move it to SD?
No, you'd need to remove the original copy in /system/app for that.

you should go thru all your existing apps, even ones already on the SD card, and move them back to phone storage, then back to SD card. a google employee twittered this tip, and its a good one. most apps will get optimized and use the new system to take up even less space.
I did that... but once more, on the "pm setInstallLocation 2" - would this move "all" apps (save for some exceptions) to SD? Even the ones I would not want on SD (like widgets)?
It won't move anything that's already installed. Just enable you to move them as you see fit.
Anything new installed will go straight to the SD card though, so if it's a widget or LWP you'll want to move it to the internal storage manually.
Would this be an option?
1) "pm setInstallLocation 2"
2) Move Flash and others to SD manually
3) "pm setInstallLocation 0"
The last should prevent any future installs to go to SD (unless intended by the app designer of course) so no problems with LWP or widgets, but finally being able to move Flash...
Maybe I'll just try it out
It would, however I think it would also remove your ability to move apps that haven't been given the OK by the developer.
Yes, but I wouldn't have that option without the "pm setInstallLocation 2" in the first place. And "pm setInstallLocation 0" would just save me from unintended trouble later on (an update on BW would be enough otherwise to move that to SD...).
And the moved apps should stay there even after the "pm setInstallLocation 0" step I hope.

You don't.
Covered many times.
The /sdcard/ path does not map to the actual SD card so trying to store apps on SD does not work.

Today has already brought "when will we get multi touch", "can't move apps to SD card" ... I think all thats left is "I bought an A7 and my wife left me, will installing DexterMod fix this?"
Which version will save my marriage? 1.3 or 1.4.x? Or FW?????
For a laugh, read my post on the OT thread.
