Who's attention do we need to get to start getting some love for custom roms on the bravo? I'm wondering if it would be relatively easy to accomplish given the hardware inside is pretty similar to the droid 2 and droid x. I believe it's identical minus clock speeds. Anyway, I would like some stock froyo or gingerbread on this baby to see it really shine. Not to mention 1-1.2GHz.
Yes please. That would be awesome.
Yea....
You know, guys, you cant just sit here and ask for custom ROMs and just hope it pops up somewhere. You have to help too! Make a system dumb of your Bravo and upload it to Mega Upload or something to start off helping...then go around to people and ask someone, for intense on the Defy form because the phones are similar, if they'll take your dump (yea sounds bad LOL) and make some sort of custom recovery out of it. WE NEED PEOPLES HELP if we plan to make this phone AWESOME .
Well, I have no idea how to go about doing that, but would be more than willing to work with people to get the info they need to help them. I'll do some searching on how to get the dump unless you have a link that outlines that sort of thing.
From what I'm seeing people just grab the /system/ directory? I'm in droid explorer but it doesn't seem to allow me to copy it. hmmmm
Ditto, would love to help get some roms for this thing, just need to get me to the right path and I am all over it. Not much of a coder but willing to try.
Have already installed android sdk and Eclipse on my system, total noob to Android.
Have you found out anything on system dump? Probably good palce to start.
YEP!
That is why it's called a system dump! So yea I know I've had that problem too, where it won't let you copy the /system. I recommend the DroidExplorer program.
www.de.codeplex.com/releases/view/50997
Works great for me, IDK if it'l work with the Bravo as good as my Flipout (busted my Bravo, but it's fixable with an SBF or a .ZIP) So anyways please let me know if that works so someone can start developing!
Link gave me server error will try it again later on.
Here's what I have found out so far;
Using Eclipse/ADT I can see my whole system from Eclipse Explorer and watch it as it's running. From here I can push and pull (adb) from here. I have would attach a screen shot but need to wait till I have such privileges.
I could start to actually make system changes from here, but that would be suicidal since I am still new at this.
What I would like to do is download, copy, maybe dd from terminal, not sure how to, my current device rom to an emulator so I can experiment with it (rather trash the emulator than my phone).
If anyone an help with this (haven't figured this out yet) would be of great help.
Also have not investigated yet but Motorola Clig, Shadow, XT800, Kobe (Bravo), Milestone, Droid 2, Droid Pro, and Defy are all OMAP 36XX processors so I am thinking roms from these could/maybe (use at own risk I AM NO EXPERT) work on the Bravo.
As soon as I figure out all the above I am still ignorant in (don't want to brick this phone) I will start experimenting with the roms.
Any help in these areas would be greatly appreciated as it would also be a major time saver, googling for what I have so (which isn't much far) has taken weeks.

Closer look Xt800 and Milestone are the closest w/the XT being the one which would appear to be be best choice. So later this evening will head over to XT posts and see what I can dig up, right now need to go sell some cookies with my daughter.

Maybe sum luck here
This phone will get 2.2 soon, trust me on this! Once it does, someone will grab an SBF (a stock 2.2 Bravo SBF) for this. I think a main reason for this phone not being developed on is because none of these files necessary exist. Hopefully when 2.2 is released some one WILL get a hold of it, an update.zip, an SBF...I think the'll all work. So yea, just some good news. Oh, and don't ask how I know, I KNOW.
someone might already have their hands on the 2.2 update.zip.
I found in the market an app called "android dump". Does anyone know if that will do what we need it to do? And what is the steps we need to follow to get some support for this device? Just upload to media fire? I will go ahead and do that when I get a chance and post back gere when I have done so. anyone with additional instructions ios greatly appreciated.
Already done!
Just uploaded system dump to mediafire. In case you want to know how, just run adb and do the command pull /system.
Oh, btw, heres the link!

BTW i already got jboogie (dev working on defy) and asked him if he had any chance of porting it to the Bravo by just making some minor changes. Look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877058&page=92
without clockworkmod or something we cant even use roms, good thing i just saw this:

this guy is porting koush's work to the bravo!
he needs an sbf though, can we help him?!?!?!
also 2.2 is far imo, its not even on motorola's update roadmap.
It's in testing right now. 2.2 that is.

the man is correct. almost had my hands on it.
If you guys are that close to it then surely you can get an SBF of 2.1??? pretty please?
I am porting Clockworkmod using Koush's bootstrap recovery and am close to a working test but am not willing to test it on my gf's unit without an SBF at this point, she just got it and she bought it on ebay so i am not sure if she will have warranty issues with at&t (probably)
so without and sbf i am looking for someone who has perhaps cracked their screen and is getting an insurance replacement, you can test my work and if it bricks your phone then no one is out anything, it will be sbf'ed at the factory anyways. even a warranty replacement is fine, but there is a little risk but i have never had problems with that. they just sbf the things. not boot them up and look for root lol. plus you already voided your warranty if you want to be techincal when you rooted

I work at att. The bravo is less then a year old so your gf is covered even if it was purchased from ebay. If you brick it just do the exchange by mail safer then in store.
What does the exchange cost because I got mine free as an upgrade phone and unless you have insurance it's my understanding that once the thirty day warranty is over it's all on you.

It has a one year manufacture's warranty on it which will protect against manufacture defects which would cover software failure if they did not find out device is rooted.
Okay so I've got a theory about Motorola encrypted bootloaders like the ones on DX and Milestone. What I'm looking for is definitive information on the droid x lockout mechanism. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone knows of a broken DX to utilize for this experiment please let me know. It involves a hardware based process so a complete functional phone is not necessary. This method has been known to work with RSA encryption so it shows promise. Thank you.
MrKaz
From what I've heard, the "key" so to speak, in burned into the CPU itself. Its my understanding the only true way to unlock the BL is with Moto's keys, which we wont be getting any time soon. Whatever your plan is, I wish you the best. But we've had roughly 20+ of these threads come and go on here with everyone thinking they can crack it, and nothing ever pans out. Its a matter of the right people with knowledge and the right equipment to do the job, but those things have just not come together yet.
Once again, I wish you the best!
You may want to contact @aliasxerog, @_mrbirdman_, and/or @nenolod on twitter as they have all worked on trying to break/circumvent the bootloader. @P3Droid may be knowledgeable as well.
Yeah, I realize there's been a lot of threads on this. Having read a good deal of them I've determined that for the most part the consensus is that it can't be done, or at least not by any brute force means. However, I'm interested in other ways like signal injection and other hardware based avenues. After all, it is a chip and chips have flaws... Maybe I don't know enough to realize what it would take, and maybe being too stupid to understand that it can't be done is exactly what is required...
Thanks for all your input

MrKaz,
+1 to your idea. Hey, who knows what will work.. with all that is going on, I wouldn't be surprised if the one idea that works..is some off the wall idea such as a chip flaw... Go for it man... I say take the idea and run with it.
best of luck
Your idea is one that I have been working on. All that needs to happened is find a way to dump the info to a computer and resign or make a dummy key to patch and inject back in.. unfortunately I have yet been able to inject anything because once dumped and cleared it doesn't regonize still active.. blah DX

_mrbirdman_ & nenolod dropped the ball and jumped ship.
P3Droid is better at BS and espionage than development. I mean, who actually uses tranquility? Or hasn't been bricked by it? Beside, what's been the biggest draw TBH has had to their app? The tether patch? If you were me, you'd be LYAO... LOL
As for @aliasxerog, from what I've seen, I've got very little faith that his efforts will pan out. Unless he stops looking to the above mentioned "devs", and starts working with the milestone guys. Especially yakk, who's probably done the most work on the kexec kernel module(Funny, aliasxerog's src makes no mention. He just says he ported it from the milestone efforts.). Yakk hasn't even released all of his code for kexec, so what aliasxerog is working with is incomplete, and certainly not up-to-date. His source doesn't even compile. Not even on my trusty build system that built the first DX overclock kernel module for Froyo, which jumped off JRummy's DX career(Jared didn't even bother to say "hey, mind if I use the module you built?"). Gotta love the DX devs! They bring so much laughter into my life!

With that said, MrKazman, good luck in your efforts.

Update
I'm getting more and more familiar with this situation every day. I'm also starting to realize what a big problem this is. I've spent a good deal of time pouring over the work they're doing with the Milestone which is kind of the same thing but isn't. Nonetheless I applaud the work they do and donate my CPU to Androinc. After that I've been reading and collecting every Block Diagram, Datasheet, Whitepaper, and post about mbmloader, m-shield, omap, and the like. Yeah, its complicated alright. The fact is though that its just a lock. A lock is a system based on deterrent not prevention. Systems built for mass production have accepted flaws to keep costs down. Chips aren't perfect, code is not perfect. Use the weakness against the system and the lock is picked. The more complex the system the more chances to get in....
Eh, I digress...
Anyone wanting to learn more about this let me know.
The search continues....

If this is anything like any other locked software, it's based around asymmetric encryption: Motorola HQ has a super-secret key that they use to encrypt their bootloaders, and they put the decryption key on every device, so that only things that are encrypted with their key will be decrypted correctly. The only way we're going to get the encryption key is by sleeping with the CEO of Motorola. It is - by design - not on the device.
The only way to replace the bootloader would be to replace the decryption key with one of our own or by bypassing it completely(using a buffer overflow or something similar).
As much as I want to believe that this can be done, its close to impossible and honestly not worth the persons time to try it, they did a good, well great, job of locking this thing down but ill say that liberty actually makes this feel like a new phone.

Hey all, I talked to koush and he said he was ok with me porting his Droid2/X/Pro bootstrap to the motorola bravo.
Basically it will work the same way as on those devices, you load the bootstrap app on the phone, and reboot into recovery. the phone reboots and clockwork mod then loads and you can install .zip's (like the gb keyboard, etc) do nandroids, install rom's etc.
you cant install custom kernels because of the locked bootloaders on these devices, this is the only drawback.
I am going to need some testers and even better if someone could get me the SBF file for this phone that would be so awesome. Its gotta be easy to find, its been out for a while and its an old software 2.1-update1 that i think is the same since release. Please let me know!
if you want to follow my work or help my github is :
https ://git hub.com/bandroidx - put the space back between git and hub i cant post links either
This should work with 2.2 so even if it drops soon, that is a ok. That wont make this project any less important, we need a way to get a custom recovery booted no matter what.
Update 2/19/11 - I hope to have a testable version done by the end of my long weekend (have off monday) will need testers very soon so keep in touch if your serious about testing. Anything I release will be a confirmed working on atleast 1 device (my gf's) build hopefully.
4-20-11: In final development, release imminent.
Ok i am almost ready for testers. You will need android sdk tools w/ adb and your phone must be rooted.
I need to finalize a few things, a sbf would really help, doesnt someone work for at&t and can get this?
Sent you a PM, but I can't tell if it actually was delivered. Please let me know if you got it. I am interested in testing my Bravo, but naturally, have some reservations. Thanks.
i am so limited by this 10 post thing, hopefully i get out of it fast.
i am trying to test it on a bravo emulation i got going in the simulator too, its being problematic but my gf has a real bravo for me to test on
an sbf would be nice, anyone?
i am asking some people for a sbf, maybe i can see about making a system only sbf like they did for the dx, that might work too.
MODERATOR please approve me so i can post in dev forums! argh!
I have talked to some people about an SBF and havent found anything yet. Someone must work for at&t or moto and can get this, all their stores have it probably to reflash phones.
But until then I need someone who is willing to risk bricking their phone because they are sending it back for warranty work. Yes it could void your warranty but I have never heard of this, we bricked a **** ton of droid x's before we had an sbf and had no problems.
Even better would be someone who is sending it to insurance to rpelace it because of a broken screen or something, that would be a great test unit.
So ask around, find someone for me, I should have a working test very soon.

Thanks, I am not sure how At&t is but with verizon they have tech support in the stores so someone can bring a bricked phone in and get it fixed (or replaced) while they wait, etc. Does AT&T work the same way? In that case, you could contact someone at the store and get it with a good story to the tech guys. they usually are underpaid and younger kids at vzw and will easily obey any request from corporate imo. I am fairly sure this how most sbf's get out, unless its from like an inside engineering dept or from the manfucaturer themselves but those are problably more rare.
Thanks a million if you can get this that would be great. Otherwise i think we need to hope for someone with a broken screen ,etc that is getting a replacement. I would not want to brick someones perfectly good phone with no way to recover. It happens, even with the best testing and coding.

I think I know a way to get it. Now att does warranty exchanges is they send you a new or refurbished device and you send the broken one back to them when you get it. However, there is one store in my state that doubles as a warranty device exchange center. Basically if you don't want to wait on your device in the mail you can get it replaced there. I think that would be the only store that would have the files. I just need to think of a good excuse for them to put it on a flash drive for me or to email it to me. I think they would be more about to do it if they new I worked for att and I had a good enough excuse. I'll let ya know what I can find out.

Awesome let me know, that is def. a good idea. On a phone that has been out for so long and the SBF is for released software so even though they dont let them go out in the wild openly, they are quite available. [mbm] was surprised that its not out yet for a phone released that long.
Some other good news just incase, i talekd to p3droid again and explained what i was doing in better detail and he is going to try to find this for us. He said he will shake the tree and see what falls out or something to that effect. But its at&t and not vzw, so def. still try to get it if you can without getting fired!
Just never admit you want it to release it or that you released it. I will help you release it to cover you and insulate you further if you want. I will load it up on my french seed box
Ok good news people, I have made great progress on this and hope to have a testable copy ready as soon as this weekend! If i can spend enough time to work out a few things then I could have it ready to test sunday or monday. I am working out ways to test it as safely as possible.
Tenfar who ported CWM to the Defy is helping me on the project, we have found the phones are more alike on the inside than anything else, so his help has been invaluable and thanks to him this is really looking to be something that will work out.

I have a testable apk but it hasnt been tested yet. I am unable test it on the emulator but am working on other ways to test it.
the good news is i built the whole thing with help from the guy who ported CWM to the defy which is very similar and he thinks it looks good.
basically waiting on a sbf or someone with a device going back for replacement that can boot into the os and run an app (broken scren probably would be good)

I have a testable copy that is using code confirmed working on the defy so should be good.
If you want to try it, there is some risk of bricking or needing sbf (which we dont have) but it should be recoverable in most scenarios because of the way the hijack works, all you need is a rooted phone.
if someone goes wrong it should go back to normal on next reboot.

I'll be happy to test the sbf and report back

Well, no real need to thank me. I just start projects and hopefully someone else comes along and finishes them! Great job. Thank you. I look forward to flashing this on my kid's Eris.
Oh sure, now you tell me
What are the differences between the old kernel and this one. Also will this be okay to flash on GSB?
Sent from my ERIS using XDA App

Congrats!
Is this based on the recent HeroC/DesireC sources, or the older s0be based sources?
Are the updates on github or some other repository site?

Yeah, me too I had been working on the breber github source and finally got a bootable ERIS that I could adb into and captured a dmesg as well. Only thing lacking (small issue), is that none of the buttons worked I had an idea on a fix but lost my dev box and am waiting on a replacement MB to continue.
Question is, how different is the source tree for this kernel from the breber github source? When I used the breber source, I did change many kernel options to build many items as modules (ipv6 etc...) I've used the stock CM7 as the base w/ many mods for our older phones, and was able to reduce the size of the kernel image fairly significantly. Bootup was a bit quicker, but main idea was to remove some options that are rarely used, but still make them available as modules.
I've not tested this kernel yet, but I had to make a lot of mods to the defconfig etc... to get breber to work. 2.6.35 gives us some nice features, such as auto memory compaction / defragmentation etc... In the short time I was able to use it, it appeared to run better than the .29 we've all been using.
has it been a few days yet?

Yes, finally I just got it up and running end of last week and have been playing catch-up. I use this box as a mailserver for my domain, so it spent the first 10 hours processing over 49000 messages.
Funny timing though, just compiled .35 and was getting ready to flash it. At this point, I have no idea where I left off Maybe I'll smoke the Eris next....
as long as we get a download link soon
I was hoping we might hear some updates for the people working on this...
It would be a big help if those who have gotten it to boot would post their source so others can help get this to a stable point without having to repeat work. I'd like to see Eris development stay alive even as many, including myself, have moved on to more powerful phones.

sounds good to me. I do have my box up and running, just haven't had much time to mess with it. somewhere along the the line, I screwed up my Conf, but I'll get it. It boots, but I've messed up the mtd enumeration, so no init gets started.
Just as an fyi, I'm using breber's github source with the arm 4.4.3 eabi.
Well, the good news is, I'm running 2.6.35 now. But.... the bad news is that it's on a new Moto Razr. However, I'll still be tinkering with the Eris in my spare time.
I've rooted the Razr, but I'll tell you. Getting recovery on it's a booger. Also, the battery is sealed in (I'm sure the 2 small screws at the top allow a lift out and disconnect). But, kinda got nervous for a sec when I tried to boot into recovery and got nowhere with no easy way to pull the batt. Overall, liking the phone a lot.
Now.... If only I can dig up my working config. I have a cloud based backup system that versions stuff. Need to go through and see if I've got something there.

Having a current generation phone is quite a change. I am enjoying my gnex a lot and since it doesn't need much modification, I still get to spend a good bit of my dev time with the eris .
Maybe we can talk workshed into messing with this .35 kernel again when you find that config...or he might be burnt out for awhile on the frustrations that are the kernel porting and the tbolt as a whole.
I know some people have asked about porting AOSP to the Fire TV. It's probably still a long way off, but I have managed to get it to start booting and have the boot animation display. Some stuff crashes early on, and then later in the boot, other things crash because that first thing is missing. And then it just constantly bootloops... but it's a start.
Spectacular!
My main goal is to get a full-fledged modern Linux OS with access to running my Android apps inside a window while having real-time access to Linux and all of its programs.
Thanks rbox! You're awesome! That's exactly what i wanna in my box.
I think that you can enable the "donante" in your profile, i would like to donate to reward your wonderful work!
I too would like to donate.. As well as test.. Willing to capture and submit log files. How are you booting this ROM? Unlocked boot loader on the way?

I enabled the paypal donate in my profile but it seemed a little tacky to me to have it on all my posts. So here is a donate link.
As for how I'm booting this, right now very haphazardly. In the end it will require an unlocked bootloader but jcase is the one that has to provide that. Technically, it does work with the stock kernel and I am playing around with some ideas for booting into recovery with the locked bootloader. But hopefully jcase will be able to provide the unlock soon.

IMO, it seems like jcase has no interest in releasing it. He's already said he doesn't care about the community. Just does what he does for the challenge, and I guess publicity. I could go on with more to support my theory, but don't want to come across a complainer, as no one owes us anything.
Agreed, no one owes us anything.. That said.. Jcase wherever you are.. I would like to send you 25$ (US) too. I do not ask for support.. Just the means.. The knowledge. Thanks again everyone.

he also seems to be a man of few words, so its possible hes still waiting on amazon to fix the security vulnerability before he releases it, thats the last thing he said here before he went silent, either way tho, good job RBOX, and everyone else helping.

Very, very true. E-publicty ruined that guy. Its awesome to see someone still working on this box though, gj Rbox hopefully your work will lead to greater things in the future.
So it's booting all the way. I'm not sure why there is a black bar on the right side.

I'm actually booting it off my network right now with NFS and loop mounts. I suppose I could use a similar method to boot it from USB. I'm thinking about creating a system based on 2nd-init which some phones with locked bootloader use. Hopefully the unlock will be released before I have to do that though.

Good luck. A rescue stick for the aftv would be mighty handy.
I've worked on 2nd init for some Motorola phones back in the day.. The trick is finding a script that is not in /system that runs from init early in the boot process...
FireTV + AndroidTV
I know it is a basic question, but theoretically if you get the 2nd Init working, we could port an AndroidTV ROM into the FireTV and use it as such, right?
At the end the remote control has also the Voice functionality.
Just wondering or am I missing something?

It depends on the sourceness of Android TV (probably not open source), the availability of a system dump, and the hardware compatability. I'm not sure what you are saying about the remote control... but it doesn't have "voice functionality", it has a microphone and the system software has the support for the voice.
It seems that unlock won't be released from Jcase:
https://twitter.com/TeamAndIRC/status/505926495835922434
(it's about Kindle HDX, but it's the same case as FTV).
So... Help us rbox kenobi, you're our only hope!
Who or what exactly is responsible for the prevention of the unlocker getting released?
Wouldn't it be a middle finger to their consumers if Amazon was actually the cause of this trajedy?

Seems I was finally able to get TWRP to display on the screen. Unfortunately it was only for a second and then it crashed and rebooted. But I'm making progress. Unfortunately I had some family issues to take care of this weekend so I didn't have as much time as I had hoped.

Of course Amazon is the "cause". They don't want you unlocking it, hence the reason it's locked in the first place. Unfortunately it looks like the DMCA is preventing the unlock from being released.

You may not need an unlocker.
As a simple test unpack recovery, modify icon_error.png, repack, dd to recovery partition and reboot recovery.
I'd be interested to know if this works on releases other than 51.1.0.2
