Apologies in advance if I've posted this in the wrong section of the forum.
I saw RyanZa's OCLF app in the Android Market last night and was stoked because I didn't realize it could be done that way. (Maybe this is actually THE way it's supposed to be done? Shows what I know.)
I just have a few questions and I'm asking them here because all the other threads have outdated info and made me confused.
1 - Just to be clear, running this app roots your Vibrant and applies a lag fix correct? Does it do anything else? It also gives you an easy way to undo the rooting and undo the lag fix?
2 - From the comments in the app market, it sounds like the majority are very happy about their results using this. Is the general consensus that running this app is a no-brainer?
3 - Finally, I read an older thread in the development section and in the "updates" it said that someone else had created a better lagfix that "owns" RyanZa's fix. So, now I'm not sure what "lag fix" is the "right" one to apply.
Thoughts? Comments? And, thank you for any assistance. My phone is still stock and it still just keeps getting better. Getting closer and closer to rooting.

1. Yes, no, yes.
2. I am 120% happy with it. I noticed a BIG difference.
3. Download and run RyanZa lag fix. You will be very happy.
It works really well!
You can root, unroot, apply lag fix, and remove it. The options are great!
Just do it, and be happy!
Thanks for the comments guys.
Are there any tricky parts to the procedure you want to warn me about? I'm assuming that once I download the app and run it there will be an easy to follow step-by-step wizard, but I just know I'll run into something I don't understand. The fear of screwing up my one and only phone is nerve-wracking. <--- newb

I just did this to my phone and the one thing I noticed is that there is no wizard. The need to know the keystrokes for the first step to boot into recovery.
With phone off after first step, hold phone horizontal, press power, volume up and down keys at same time release power key when you see Samsung logo. The remaining steps are straight forward. You do install the features in stages. You'll see when you start doing it. I just did this sitting in a restaurant. Good luck!

It's very easy, and trust me you can't fail at it. Like above said, it's listed in stages. Read what you wish to apply or remove, click on it, reboot, and you're good to go. It's that simple!
It's easy. I just installed it. All you have to do is download EXT2 tools (included with the app) then install the lag fix.
The lag fix is faster and noticeable.
I recommend downloading it

Does anyone know if the font issue has been corrected? Just curious before I do it, I bought a couple cool fonts from the market...
I ran his lagfix, not the market app, I have no trouble applying fonts.

Here's an informative post (Vibrant specific) for Ryanza's app:
http://jjroid.wordpress.com/2010/08/25/one-click-lag-fix-for-samsung-galaxy-s-vibrant/
So, I was rooting (using the OCLF) and I kinda got myself lost between steps and I'm not sure if I'm rooted or not. Is there an easy way to tell whether your phone is rooted or not?
Edit: Nevermind, I went through the process again and I'm pretty sure I successfully rooted since the option to "Root Device 2.1" is now unavailable. Next question, what exactly are these "EXT2 Tools" I'm installing?
Open up the app again. See if "unroot" is an option/enabled, if it is, you're rooted. Another way is to see if there is a new app installed named "superuser permissions" on your phone.

Ah, thank you. Good to know. I assume this is just an app which let you manage what apps/progs have superuser permission... something I should probably never mess with.
Btw, I may not actually understand everything I just did, but I have root on my Vibrant and RyanZa's Lag Fix has been applied.
Quadrant score went from 907 to 2231 in about 20 cautious minutes. Wow, are you kidding?
The fix is great so far, as is this Android development community. Both are highly recommended. Donations are forthcoming. Thanks for having patience with newbs.
One thing I did notice though... I checked the free space and it went from around 1700 of 1900 before the lag fix to about 650 of 850 after. Not sure what to make of that.
Good job on not bricking your phone. I've heard doing this process CAN brick your phone, which makes me scurred poopless!
"Could not copy over data: cp: read error: input output error" Grr. Where are a list of troubleshooting ideas? Nothing happen bad, just didn't stick.

I just did this, it's as easy as clicking the icons and follow the simple instruction. The hardest part is the rebooting step (pushing both the Power & up/down buttons at the same time ). If you can't perform these simple procedures, then your phone deserved to be bricked.
On the serious note, thanks OP for the posting!

Could someone clarify the two things first what are the exact benefits I get out of it. would it take me back to what I had on my nexus --basic android. nd
Secondly would it void my warranty? If so is there a way of getting back to the original factory settings where they would not know?
Lastly there is no way I would be able to do this is there anyway of getting anyone else to do it in person or over the computer By giving me instructions I know there is a list of instructions but I was thinking more along the lines of seeing or speaking to someone

1 - Simply rooting the phone would not give you the same setup that you had on your Nexus One, but it would allow you to get there. By rooting the phone, you are getting complete access to every partition on that phone and THAT is what allows changes to be made to the kernel and operating systems (aka ROMs). Unless you are a developer and know how to create your own ROM, you'd have to wait until one is created for us. Right now I believe there is one called Ice or something to that extent. You can check the Development section for that.
2 - Rooting technically does void your warranty, however there are way to get back to the original stock ROM/settings. There are threads in the Development section as well. As with anything that is in unfamiliar territory, take care and precaution when modifying your phone...especially if you use it on a daily basis and aren't sure of the exact steps to take.
Hopefully this was somewhat useful. Good luck!
Allen, and everyone, thank you
Yes, it does help
You say I can wait for one, or do my own, or use one by ??Ice.
Is that the one that was on the net, namely one like this, created by Scotty also?
http://www.intomobile.com/2010/11/11/root-mytouch-4g-install-custom-recovery/
1. Is that safe
2. Is the "flash" the thing that can get you back to factory settings
3. As far as the ? about getting anyone to take baby steps with you in doing this OR somewhere to take the phone to do it, has anyone heard of this.
Lastly, Allen
did you know anything about the phone locking up after a break, when using WiFi (EDIT: Oops thought I mentioned this in the post above. fwiw, anyone know why I can use wifi over the net quite well, using my browser (not to confuse using the wifi calling app, as one gent thought I meant. But then after a brief break, it locks up. even if I switch back to hspa. I have to restart. any ideas?)
Again, Thanks Allen, and all
If the only thing you know about rooting is "its very very good" then my suggestion would be to not do it just to do it.... do your research first, learn the basics and what its all about, yes there are pro's but theres con's. A simple mistake could leave you with a very expensive paper weight. All I'm saying is there's no need to jump in to it. root was around far before android and wont disappear over night. The only thing that I can't stress enough is research research research.

For a beginner developing your own rom would be extremely difficult/almost impossible... no other roms have been released yet except for the ice one but that is the exact same thing as what you have now minus the stock apps
One problem with using other peoples roms is if you can't read the code you really don't know what your putting on your phone... with XDA a decent amount of us can read code and would say something if we found it malicious but what if noone took the time on that specific rom? unless you can read it that just brings me back to you really never know
So I guess that answers your is it safe question... its safe if you know what your doing... and don't get me wrong I'm not tryin to make it sound scary it'll be a 1 in a million shot to find a malicious file on xda but it could happen
2 flash an equal to install ... as installing a rom flashing a rom

thanks. No, that just about answers it. very well, I might add. I will wait
what i meant, is if there is one that comes out, might there be someone who will walk you thru it, i.e for a newbie either thru chat, phone, or somewhere to take your phone to get it flashed with the new rom
oh ok i see, you would probably not want someone to do it for you because youll need to do it more than once... if someone walks you through it at least you learn how to do it and you'll be able to do it next time (and trust me theres always a next time) if your interested in doing it i pm'd you my aim name and id help you out with it... its really quite simply when its broken down... but like i said before id do some more research on it first and come up with some reason you personally need root access because its importance to other people may not mean anything to you n vice versa.
Just got my shift today, and so far I'm head over heels with it I know I can't give a legitimate review until I've had it for at least a few weeks, so I'll make sure to pop back in after I've had it for a bit. The only complain I have at this point is the volume button placement; I've been accidentally tapping it as I close the slider. I have found a solution though! Get in the habit of placing your thumb a bit more to the right while using the keybboard, OR moving one or both of your thumbs to the top and bottom of your phone before closing the slider.

Glad to hear you're liking it so far! I've had mine for two days now and I'm proud to say I'm also head over heels.
I didn't think I'd be able to stand running Sense again, but it really flies on this phone. Volume placement doesn't bother me. Only thing that does is bloatware (man HTC really put a lot on this one!) Most of that is already gone, however.
I was looking around and it seems like there is no permanent root yet. Did you temp root and remove the bloatware? What are the downside to temp rooting over per rooting?

Yes I did.
The only downside I see is use of what root users deem necessary apps doesn't stick on reboot. Well, that and the obvious lack of rom selection.
S-Off is just a whole different game. I'm used to using fastboot commands, etc.
We'll see permaroot before too long and I'm sure we'll have great rom and theme selection after that.
Sorry for the stupid questions, but what exactly is a ROM? I'm still pretty new to the whole Android scene ;( S-off and Fastboot Commands as well

Think of a rom as a modified, sometimes heavily, version of the phone's operating system.
You'll see AOSP roms, that's Android the way Google meant it to be.
Sense roms, modified versions of HTC's releases.
I would give you a few great links but I'm on phone at the moment. I'll get them to ya a little later.
Haven't temp-rooted my shift because I thought I read that any bloatware you remove will come-back after re-boot. Can you comment?

I've seen reports of both.
Everything that I have removed has stayed gone. I haven't rebooted, but my phone has dies, so that's essentially the same thing.
I'm waiting for perm root and some healthy ROM development before I go back to the Shift. I thought thse things were like roted within 2 weeks of thier release though?
@Nmott93 - I've gathered a small collection of links to better guide you through your questions than I myself can in words.
You'll notice most users in these forums are extremely helpful. I think the biggest pet peeve is when people ask questions that are all ready answered in the op. Don't worry about them though!
Permanent Root or Temporary. Which is for you?
Custom ROMs for Android Explained: Why you want them.
What S-Off Is and How To Gain It - Doesn't apply to our phones, yet, but great read.
AOSP: Android Open Source Project - Home Site, lots of information.
Cyanogen(mod) - The most popular non-stock rom on any phone that I've had, still, not for everyone.
I hope that these links are informational for you, and I've got plenty more saved away if you want anything else!

Alright guys for over a year now I have been trying to decide if I should root. I have seen some positives about rooting but not a good enough breakdown to want to jump on board. Now that the new update is rolling out, I'm again at this crossroad. So I ask, what advantages are there to rooting? What do I gain over sticking to stock? Overall, just convince me why I should root and go to cyanogen...thanks in advance

1) Tethering
2) Titanium Bakup to backup apps
3) Notification power widgets (many ROMs have them now)
4) AdFree to block ads!
5) Faster / Better battery life (overclock/underlock/undervolt/etc.)
6) Nandroid Backups
7) No bloatware
8) Screenshots (minor, but some like it)
9) Blazing fast updates (CM7 been up with 2.3 since January)
These are basic for all custom ROMs, but there is just the utter speed and smoothness to CM7 especially, and has tons of great features over stock baked right into the ROM.
If you root, you don't have to go to CyanogenMod. Tons of people do because it really is an awesome AOSP ROM, but there are other choices too. Rooting gives you that choice. I personally just run CM7 because its so great, I have flashed a lot of ROMs and not found anything better.
I just use the stock GB rom with the Virtuous V4 kernel so I can OC. Does everything I need. Use Titanium to freeze a few things and its very fast.
If rooting and s-offing the phone was not a 5 min process I would say ya you need a big ass breakdown. Dude its so simple. Just do it. And even if you don't like it go back to stock. Just try it!

I'd love to root, but until there is a 5 minute solution it just doesn't seem worth it...

If he's on a G2 and on 2.2 the root really does only take about 15min start to finish. If he's on a DZ and has to downgrade etc. it can take much longer of course. On top of that, even if it takes an hour to do, its definitely worth everything it gets you.

Took a while to get root only because I have a crap sd card but it was definitely worth it!
Don't bother with the guides in the dev section, follow the wiki guide and it will be easy.
Basically its:
- Get MiniADB which it much easier to work with
- Follow wiki guide.
Done.
If you wait for a 1 click solution you learn nothing. At least you learn how to use ADB and the basic commands because you will need them when you change roms/kernels/radios.

If you are doing it using adb depending on your internet connection downloading the android sdk can take a very long time. There is a way to do it with out adb (check the dev section) which should take about 1 hour including the time it takes to read the guide a few times and make sure everyting you need is set up correctly.

An interesting article came up today which made me curious about the best way to disable CarrierIQ while causing minimal impact to my phone - I run a fully stock EI22 update from the Google zip.
Even if Sprint uses it in the spirit of the software, it grants them more opportunity to view into my personal life than I care to share - I am ashamed of nothing but I don't feel like broadcasting either, ya know? I know it's been there since our late Froyo updates, but now that we're on Gingerbread, and not likely to see anything further for quite some time (if ever) I would like to do something about it.
Is basic root enough to get in and turn it off or is it more problematic than that? I don't want to get pointed at any custom rom's or anything else - I've had a good experience with my stock gingerbread and want to keep it. I just want the minimum steps needed to remove/disable CarrierIQ.
Currently you need to flash a ROM that comes with no CIQ. I believe there is a stock ROM that includes it. Let me see if I can find it.

I was attempting to locate that same thread to reply with, but the forum search mysteriously disappeared. lol
Wow, there's no way to rip it out even with root access and a shell prompt? That's a damn shame, thanks for the info though everyone :]

Yeah, even if you get into the UI and turn it off, they can turn it back on, from what i understand.
Going to show some newb factor here: what's a 'deodexed' ROM? The thread provided above is a nice kit on how to remove CarrierIQ but makes some assumptions about starting point (such as having CWM and a deodexed ROM). ClockWorkMod I know about, but not familiar with the other term.
Are there any that keep the stock look/feel/experience intact?
--edit--
Found a good URL on the deodexed question, if anyone else wants the gory details:

Note to self, don't read (or rather SKIM) forums replies when tired. This post nailed everything I was after and a couple tidbits extra. Thanks!
So,
I am obviously behind since I just got this phone. I am also rusty when it comes to all things root, being on Verizon/Samsung phones for a while now so I didn't have the options.
I am just curious, I have read through a lot of threads but I can't seem to find anything about one click root. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrLR003Mn-Y
Has anyone used this? more importantly, has anyone used it on build MMB29Q?
Thanks

Would not trust it.
There's a lot of simple tuts here on XDA for rooting.

Yea, those have always been garbage and hasn't really been one since pre-kitkat. I mean, you might find one on some bootleg phone..but yea.
Checkout @Heisenberg's root guide. Point's you to all the files you need. Takes like 10 minutes at most, when you have all the files.

No need for that, those things almost always cause problems. I have a guide that contains everything you need:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206928
I'm in a similar "boat" as the OP. However, I have never rooted before. How much difficulty will I encounter using the aforementioned tutorial on a Macbook?

It's essentially the same. The commands are the same but I believe you need to prefix them with something extra. Just look up a tutorial on how to install the Android SDK on a Mac, and if you search "Mac" in the thread you'll see instructions on how to prefix the commands.
Thanks for the replies guys. I'm excited about being able to root and flash custom roms again...it's been a long time.

Here's a thread we kinda have going for OSX users. Couple other alternatives are suggested in there.
I outlined what I did earlier in Heisenberg's thread, all with OSX 10.10.5.
