I have the Vibrant. My friend has the Incredible. I compared the two.
While on paper the Vibrant tops the Incredible in terms of hardware (aside from camera related areas), the Incredible seems to be a bit more snappy. Now I am not saying the Vibrant is "slow", but rather there is noticeable ~.5-1 sec delay when opening messaging, for example, where as the Incredible has none, at all. (I have applied Ryan's lagfix and hit 2.2k on Quadrant... wish Quadrant results would reflect actual performance.)
Seeing as how Vibrant has the better hardware, my guess is it must be Sense UI vs TouchWiz thing. I love TouchWiz (don't flame me) but if it is the one causing my otherwise great phone to slow down... I will nuke the thing.
What do you guys think?
I thought I saw that the incredible was starting to see froyo. Has he updated? That would make a huge difference. If you are seeing lash on the Samsung specific apps. I would say it is likely touchwiz vs. sense thing.

We need a later firmware revision. The one we have isn't very good. Later versions reduce or eliminate the type of lag you're talking about.
Besides that, I don't know what you're trying to prove here
My guess would be it's Touchwiz that causes this but there could also be other factors involved. I have a friend with an incredible and he replaced his messaging with handcent because the lag he was getting from opening the messaging app itself as well as the threads.

Have you applied the "fix" yet? I don't see any delays or lag when I open apps.
if you apply the "lag fix" i'm almost certain you won't be able to notice any slow downs in terms of opening applications.
from the limited knowledge I have of the whole "samsung vibrant lag" it's caused by the way the vibrant processes I/O read/write? it's very inefficient as compared to other phones. the fix is a work around and it literally makes it amazingly "snappy" and fast.
I'm choosing to hold off on the fix for now, people reporting issues and having to ODIN flash back to stock is turning me off.
*edit - totally missed the part that said you applied the lag fix. reading comprehension ftl

The problem is it isn't just on messaging; its pretty much everywhere (except browsing... browsing is blazing fast.)
I have a friend with an incredible its a few months old but I found the opposite to be true. Using her phone made me appreciate the speed of the vibrant, I almost felt like I was back using a G1. my phone is about as stock as you can get aside from running launcher pro instead of the regular home app.
2.2 will only make this thing faster. I use touchwiz to show off my phone. It is a lil choppy but never slow. I think our only competitor when we get 2.2 will be the x but for some reason im not worried.

Me neither. Had it since release. No lag and about 120 apps installed...
Just need 2.2 and I'm golden....
Gps even works good here... lol
After spending more time with TouchWiz's launcher, I can safely say it is the root of a lot lag. Sucks because I really like it.

Are apps opening in lightening speed?
Is there any lag at all?

I can still choose whether I get the Nexus S or the Atrix; a friend in the US buys it tomorrow for me. I was done & dusted on getting the Nexus S (coming from an un-rooted Nexus One) until I took a final look on those specs of the Atrix again. That phone just looks too good on paper to not be good!
Guys, more updates please! Help a guy make up his mind..

Apps opening? - Fastest phone I've own yet...
Lag? - yes. Going from an app like Angry birds to home screen, there's an initial lag. It's annoying. Must be Blurrrrr.
Camera? - Disappointed...iPhone 4 is definitely better.
Let's just say I'm ready to install a custom Rom without all the bloatware and lameBlur. Blur kills the phones IMO.
Not many phones can beat the iphone 4 camera appart from Nokia, but is the camera on the Atrix better than the HTC Desire or nexus s.
Cheers.

Go back to the Nexus S boards then rather than trolling here. You clearly don't have the phone, any anything you state is a matter of opinion, and clearly jealousy since you're on our boards and not yours.
My atrix is fast. I had someinitial lag in the app drawer while using Launcher Pro but it is gone now.

Came from Nexus One. Good upgrade.
Confirmed that with proper account provisioning, unlimited 4G data for $30, and the "phone" apn, upload is either capped by AT&T or HSUPA is disabled on the hardware by AT&T. Tethering plan may increase upload speed but I got no confirmation in this yet.
Otherwise it's an excellent upgrade from the N1.

The phone works great, haven't had any lag at all so far. Only been playing on it for 4 hours though! Launcher Pro works great, I have the 3D settings on and the animations don't lag whatsoever. No complaints with the screen. Only thing that sucks is my Worms game isn't working Something about being an unsupported device.
Man I see you trolling on a ton of threads here and as a Nexus S owner myself you really give us a bad name.

Should note that if you look at the reviews out there, the N1 battery life is crap (compared to the Atrix). Also the Atrix (like most newer Android phones) has a proper multitouch screeen. So you'll notice way better typing input immediately.
I will admit.... it's nice that nucentury is at least starting to use SOME punctuation. Not enough, but it's still an improvement from the first post i've seen from him in his other thread.
Besides.... who would even take the advice of someone who thinks that a gyroscope makes a phone that much better than any other device when it comes to gaming? A gyroscope has the same exact flaw as Microsoft Kinect. It's only logical to be used for a certain genre of games. Anything outside those genres, and it's just a useless addition to the phone.
Everything for me is great thus far. Phone is very snappy using LauncherPro also using Beautiful widgets.
Typing is spot on. Nice screen resolution. I would say the phone is overall faster than the Captivate and Inspire.

Anyone else have lag issues when unlocked, rooted, with oc'd kernel installed running at any speed. I mostly notice when coming out of standby mode. Text input on web pages is considerably slow, also loading of web pages. When opening apps it doesn't seem to be affected other than movie playback. Any feedback would be appreciated.....

Same issue here, not sure of any fix though.
this happens to me too but it never lastes more than a min or two.
hmmm i havent noticed this at all. have been overclocked for a little over 2 weeks with only a couple restarts due to theme installs
i mean it isn't something that is super noticable for me but sometimes my keyboard lags for a couple mins but then it gets back to normal. i mean it is expected when you have a device that still hasn't had its "official full" update lol.

Yeah, but compare this experience with stock on the Captivate (cause it's not even close to Serendipity), and that's a whole different comparison
It took a while for good, stable kernels to come out for the Captivate as well. Hopefully Google changes their mind about the source code once the rest of these tablets start coming out, and then we might get some of your fantastic meals for the Xoom too!

No kidding. Flash back to stock Eclair on the Captivate to turbo charge your Xoom.
If you are running performance mode with setcpu and have a min freq above 250, the CPU will drop to 250 when you turn screen off and not go above it.
Simple fix is to keep setcpu on "on demand", but you can also keep it on performance and manually bump the freq up by going into setcpu every time you turn the screen on.

Yea, the only time i lags for me is when i am scrolling via browser or something with a lot of texts / graphics. I would assume a dual 1Ghz would be more smooth than this.

You have something wrong then. I do not have that experience. In fact, if I try to do some intense things like video recording using your Captivate ROM, my phone chokes where my Xoom does not. Granted, the Xoom does lag for me with certain things, mostly certain web sites in the browser including this site, the overall responsiveness has been just as good or better than my Captivate with your ROM.
Perhaps you should be more specific on what you have installed, how your screens are configured, what widgets you are using, etc. so maybe the culprit can be identified. Are you full stock with nothing installed and experiencing this?
I disagree. You have a bad unit or your doing something wrong. Back off the bashing.

I have a relative who works for Sprint and they are going to get the Nexus S 4G in a week or two when it comes out. I am going to take their Epic off of their hands, upgrading from my Hero.
I was just curious how you all liked it? How does it perform, battery, etc...?
And is it as customizable with ROMs as the Hero is? I've had quite a bit of fun with the Hero, I just think its about time for an upgrade.
Let me know, thanks!
I dont know anything about the Hero. But i'm really happy with my Epic. I have it overclocked at 1.45Ghz. The devs that work on this phone have great support for there work(and more often then not, will help even if its not their's) The Custom roms here are stable. I'm running "SyndicateROM Frozen 1.1.0" with the "VisionKernel v1.2" and can't be happier.
I'm fine with mines. But I've always had a Samsung phone so I'd like to try a new phone for once. I get about 12-14 hrs of use with moderate usage, which is more than enough for me. I always have a battery pack with me just in case but I've never had to use it. I've tried many roms. And I think it is pretty customizable like the hero, but not 100% sure.
I love my Epic; I've had it since September and it has taken a ton of abuse with no issues at all. Roms are all pretty good, but I am currently running on a stripped/rooted EC05 and happy as can be with it.
The performance is outstanding on it; I played the benchmark game going back and forth between roms for the best performance but the bottom line is even stock it is plenty fast... sure it can be made faster, but the phone is just plain fast to begin with.
Battery life is not bad for what it is. I can make it through a day without issue unless I am playing games for hours etc. With normal web and phone usage I will be between 60 and 75% at the end of the work day. If I just blast it all day it will be 30-50% at the end of a work day. If I take it real easy it can go about two days.
I was considering going to the Nexus when it comes out, but I'm not sure I can handle losing the hw keyboard... it was the final deciding factor between the Epic and the Evo for me; and while I use swype 90% of the time (I expected to use the HW KB all the time), that 10% where I really just have to use the HW KB really is necessary for me (doing web based tech support/training sometimes getting client contacts when there isn't a computer accessible). For the keyboard alone it is worth it's weight in gold to me, and if some of my clients knew I was getting them through a crisis on a telephone, they would probably say the same thing
So uh yeah... you'll be happy with it.
i hate it
im getting a nexus as soon as its available on sprint

nexus s will blow the epic away.. but as far as an upgrade from a hero.. you'll like it.
The nexus s is the same damn phone just with nfc and gingerbread which we wll be getting soon. I had to get a seido extended..I don't care what people say or what rom they use I couldn't get more then 6ish hours having the phone on with setcpu and not even using 4g or really playing music. I came frpm the htc hero. I love this phone! The development isn't quite as large but the phone's hardware is amazing. The hero had lag in many places and the epic pretty much has none. The epic's GPU is basically the strongest on the market (atleast for sprint, until the evo 3d comes out), so any gaming will work great on the Epic.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
I agree with many of the previous post. The Epic doesn't have as many roms as the hero no true cm rom yet, but it will blow your mind! Very fast stock. My battery on stock, using the hell out it with screen as bright as it gets is usually 8 hours maybe a lill more. On custom roms 10 plus heavy use. Phone is a champ and handles anything thrown at it. You will have the equivalent of the nexus s because they are the same phone I know people holding the s now. The screen alone is amazing and upscales the worst video you can play. All in all you are very lucky to get this upgrade and despite some heads clashing this community will reach out and help you each step of the way myself included. Need anything pm me no hesitation!

The Epic has excellent hardware. The stock software, on the other hand, ranges from a joke to a nightmare. Plan on putting a custom ROM on it to get the most out of the unit; I run SyndicateROM and the phone performs far better than it did on any of the previous stock ROMs.
I'm very happy with the phone itself, however.
I like it a lot ever since cleaning it up. That's the key to the whole thing I think.
The only issue that I have with my Epic is the Build quality. I feel that Samsung cheapened up the device to the point that it scratches it self from opening and it can be loose. That stuff aside it is an amazing handset and well worth the money.

You're going to love the phone. The keyboard is the nicest you'll ever get on a phone, its really fast and the screen is going to blow you away. I'm using a custom rom Syndicate Frozen and I have had no problems at all compared to stock.
Samsung Epic 4g
I agree with most of the posts in here so far. I love my epic and it is really easy to customize. Personally, I had to make the switch to custom roms not only because of performance increase, but mostly for the battery performance increase. I would get 6 - 8 hours tops on stock off one battery, now I average about 18 hours. It feels weird not carrying my extra battery with me everywhere now!
The devs here are amazing and support their roms very well. Hats off to you guys!
My only problems with the epic are:
1. semi-sketchy opening mechanism. I've had 2 epics and both of them had/have a loose feeling screen after being used a while (to be expected I guess)
2. Lack of fm radio - there are apps to "fix" this though, and I guess I wouldn't really use it that much anyway
3. Lack of tv - out. This is being worked on, but I can't stand the fact this was disabled.
enjoy your new epic!
I haven't come across a ROM yet that improves battery life when the device is being used.
They may help the phone idle and sleep more efficiently but cleaning up the stock ROM does the same thing.
My two biggest improvements came when I froze System Update and removed SNS.
I am a serial ROM junkie BUT I am still in the sidelines on this one. Having read through most of the posts I still can't see what going to the beta Gingerbread achieves. Does it do anything better than the stock 2.2 which is so stable?

I feel the same way. My atrix is my only phone so I will just watch here with interest but wait for Motorola to do it's thing....I hope.
Of course it is fun to play with, but I have gone back to 1.83. It is my only phone and the rom made for Hong Kong phones is just to buggy for every day use IMHO. They have made great progress in removing a lot of the bugs, but it is just not ready for prime time yet. If I had a backup phone I would be all over it, but as it will be coming soon I believe. I can wait.

I've been using 2.3.4 since it was released here with tutorials on how to install. I used _unknown's method. I have seen no real benefits, other than having an unlocked bootloader and a recovery I can boot into anytime I want. However IMO it is stable enough to use daily... battery life is about the same, and my phones been on with no restarts for a little over 48 hrs. The only way to appreciate all the work these devs have been doing is to try it out yourself
And I would like to thank xda for hosting a forum with an endless amount of useful knowledge for all the smart phones I've had in the last 2-3 years.

Just want to know, is any of the software improved / faster or better?

Speed test wise is a bit better but this thing is such a beast its hard to see it. Camera app had a real overhaul and I love it! Battery, like above poster , seems the same. Software being gingerbread is more about cosmetics and I'm very happy in that regard ... it's pretty sexy I'm back to using launcher pro + for now but the moto-blur UI looks great. So good in fact I just started using LP+ recently. That's a big statement being as I slapped gingerblur P-ROM on the day I purchased the ATRIX!

Pretty much this for me, if they get the fingerprint scanner working I'll be a happy camper
the only bug i have noticied with the phone is that the FP scanner doesn't work, and the FFC appears sideways (but is normal when videochatting to the person on the other end).
the build is noticeably faster and smoother for me for animations, especially the 3d-cube and cylindrical app transitions on Go Launcher EX. the screen transitions for open-close and vertical-horizontal are pretty nice too since froyo lacks them. once i installed all the 'fixes' that devs have come up with, i see no reason to go back to Froyo, as I can live without the FP scanner for now, and videochatting with the FFC is fine. oh yeah, and i freakin LOVE the CRT shutoff animation.
oh yeah, and the new battery use meter system is pretty freakin' cool.
I moved back to 2.2.1 from 2.3.4 since I had horrible battery life on the HKTW 2.3.4 beta build! Other than that, I have to say it is way faster and smoother than 2.2.1!
speed, battery life, those were arbitrarily the same for me..
two of my fav noticeable improvements are:
1.) ability to clear notifications from your bar one by one instead of having to clear them all.
2.) being able to boot straight into CWM w/o a charger
3.) finally fixed the slow market download speeds!!!
2.3.4 is insanely fast compared to stock. Once you take the tome to fix the small bugs it's a really good everyday rom.
On 2.3.4 I get almost the same battery life with push email and no battery conservation as I did in 2.2.2 with everything turned off. There is no wakeup lag or random pauses like before. At first it seemed like it drained battery but After a couple days when my battery had calibrated itself this were normal.
So far the only bugs I have are the funky front facing camera and I can't sync my exchange account.nmy phone no longer heats up as much as before.
I am running launcher pro and havent disable blur yet and it's super fast. For comparison 2.2.2 with launcher pro and no blur was still slow.
It's completely changed my views of the Atrix, except for the screen.

3.) Did they, seriously?! Side by side on the same game download & on the same router, my (beloved) N1 used to download at least 3X faster.. Now, that's an improvement if they fixed it!

They did indeed. When I'm on wifi now at home I get full 1.5 MB a second market download speeds where as before I swore it never went above 250-300 kb / sec. Even on 3g the market finally takes advantage of the full bandwidth. I had to test downloading big game apks as regular apps kept finishing before I can even check the speeds

No Exchange syncing = one less push email account. That's probably why battery life seems the same for you. Mine is noticeably worse.
Unless you didn't use Exchange push in 2.2.2, in which case forget this post.

I didn't use exchange or gmail push, or even fetch in 2.2
Right now my battery is 10% lower at the end of my work night following my same usage habits. 2.3.4 seems to be much more efficient with memory management as well.
I can do without fingerprint scanner and the front facing camera, this ROM is definitely better than 2.2 froyo. Now I feel like I own a dual core phone.I am unlocked and can't wait to flash an American optimized ROM!
