I realize that if you start typing with the hardware keyboard on the home screen it will automatically enter what you've typed into a search. However I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed the following: When typing a text message if I end up (accidentally at first, and now every time I purposefully do it) pushing multiple keys at the same time toward the middle of the keyboard various, apparently random things happen. For example it may start a search, it may cause the screen to go back to my list of conversation, or even all the way back to the home screen. Try it for yourself and let me know!
i tried and nothin weird happens. perhaps u are hitting the back, home or search keys on the side of the keyboard, or maybe u have a defective keyboard.

I definitely made sure I was only pressing the very center buttons. It seemed to happen only with the "ghjb" keys, but you have to press them at the same time, multiple times. I wouldn't be extremely surprised if the keyboard is defective though...
there is a menu in the settings that has "shortcut" key commands... you can go edit this list and/or delete them so this won't happen.

I turned all of them off and that didn't change it either. I played around with it some more and found a pattern, so if anyone else would care to try this and report if it happens to them that'd be awesome...when in a conversation in the messaging app, if I hit "g" and hold it down then push "h" it brings up the menu that would normally pop up if one hit the menu button (it also types those two letters into the box for text). If I do the same thing but add "j" at the end, it functions like the back button (again typing those three letters, which end up being saved as a draft). Holding down more letters is a little harder, but doing so has actually caused the phone to freeze to the point that the battery must be taken out. Probably heading to exchange at store tomorrow.
I'm not having the aforementioned issue, but I am having the issue of typing fast on the keyboard and the keyboard skipping keys that I know I have pressed. I think it may be due to the sensitivity of they hardware keys - in that I am not hitting the ones that are skipped "hard enough". This has been confirmed by a few of my friends with Epics, but it's a minor issue and is resolved by merely typing "harder".
Anyone else?
i tried to replicate the issue, but couldnt. Try exchanging ur epic and see if u still get the issue

Same here, I came from the TP2 and I didn't had to press that hard, it kinda bugs me also.

Hi all,
I need some urgent feedback from you good folks as I have been given until tomorrow to decide whether to send back my T-Mobile MDA Vario.
On the slide out keyboard, if I press the space/sym button lightly in the center it clicks once and if i press slightly harder it clicks a second time...
Is this meant to happen? Does anybody elses do this?
Haris
PS. If I press the button on either side there is only one click
Mine makes a sound like it's clicking twice but actually only does one click.
Thanks for the prompt reply sunseaker!
When you say 'does' one click, do you mean in the software? So you only get 1 space in Word even though you're hearing/feeling 2 clicks?
Yeah,so do I.I feel it was twice. But actually,it's only one space appeared in word.
That's what's happening with me, you can feel two clicks in the center but one if you press on either side, just one is showing in word.
So all Wizard Keyboards behave like this? At first I thought it may be something like a two function button ie. light press for normal space harder press for something else.
I looked in the manual for some kind of explanation but there's no mention of it...
If they really are all like this (keep the feedback coming pls) don't people find it really annoying to feel a double click happening on a frequently used button when all the other buttons function normally? (ie. click once)
The reason you get two clicks is because there's two of those little contacts below the space key - the reason for that, in turn, is that the key is pretty wide. These two contacts are on the same 'paths', though, so there's no differentiating a spacebar press on the left from one on the right.
The reason you only get 1 space is because, normally, if you press in the center in such a way that you happen to 'click' both left and right, it will be in such a short interval that the repeat is ignored. Try pressing any other key, such as a letter key, really fast (so not 'click click', but rather 'c-click') twice - it will also only enter the letter once.
It's not too annoying for me, as I either press it on the left or on the right, depending on which thumb happens to be nearest the key
Cheers Ze!
I thought it might be something to do with 2 contacts under the space bar.
Since this is not a fault (design fault maybe ) I'm happy to aim my thumbs to the corners and will rest assured that I don't have a dodgy Vario
Thanks to all that replied - I can keep my new toy!
is there a way to disable the oddly placed send key that sits between the "R" and "T" keys? my big ol thumbs go crusing on emails and I end up sending emails before I am done. thanks for any feedback
i do the SAME thing- and i don't even have fat fingers...
I do that **** all the time. haha. and I have fat fingers.
I hear ya! anyone know how to change that?
does anyone use these buttons? seems easier to just touch the screen.. of course my dumb luck I would want to press the button and hit the "R" buttton instead. im glad to hear its not just me.
Happens to me too. I searched the registry for "send" but nothing interesting came up.
lol, done that a few times myself...getting a reply reading "wtf???" before you finish, and re-send is what...(shoutout to all famliy guy fans) "grinds my gears"
off the top of my head you could try AE Software's AEKMap which allows you to reassign buttons from the hardware keyboard.....but by doing so you might disable the two softkeys altogether. You can even figure out what registry entries are edited from changing the hardware keys by using a registry editing app that you control from your pc-scan before and after. I'm too lazy to try it out, maybe someone else could see if this is a possible solution *nudge* tadevinney *nudge*
Virtual keymapping would disable the soft keys all together, so that wouldn't work.
*bump*
This is the only major annoyance I have with my wing that still does not have an acceptable solution. My fingers are quite tiny and I still hit that damn softkey instead of the T half the time. There's another thread about this and they suggested typing the message before typing the recipient but this does not work for me as I'm almost always replying to a message instead of starting a new one. Surely one of you geniuses on this wonderful forum will figure some way to fix this.... PRETTY PLEASE!?
unfortunately, the function appears to be hard coded into the sms program, so there's no way of fixing it, unless whoever makes that software recodes it.
What about disabling it for all programs? I mean I never use it for anything. It's just as easy for me to lift my thumb a few centimeters and tap the on-screen soft key instead. Personally, I'd rather do that and not have to worry about hitting it accidently. And I'm hoping, since you were able to remap keys from herald to wing, that it should be possible to remap just that one to do nothing. Of course I don't really know what I'm talking about.
I can look into it... well, the virtual keymapping I did universally affects that key on the phone ... so I don't know how it will affect the phone ... but I can mess with it and see what I can come up with. I don't know if I would be able to disable it, but maybe I can remap it to something other than "send"
I'll see if I can look into it whenever I have some time.
I have a question on how to make this phone better... I've never used the iPhone really, other than to jailbreak it for my fiancee. Now that I have the Vibrant, I noticed ridiculously difficult it is to place your cursor in a particular spot. You can't use a stylus, there's no "magnifying glass" like the iPhone has, and there are no arrow buttons on the on-screen keyboard (as there was on my HTC Touch Pro 2). Basically, it'll take me 5-6 taps (or more) to get the cursor where I want it.
Is there any app or hack that can fix this?
If you are using samsung keyboard, then keep pressing the "123" button until more controls shows up, theres cursor control.
You can flash or wait for froyo release it comes with a cursor
Thanks to both of you. The 123 option is a PITA, but it's something. Good to know that Froyo is gonna have a cursor. Thank goodness....

I couldn't the 123 option to work. When I press the 123 button, I get four pages of symbols... no directional cursor movements. What am I doing wrong?
If you are using the Swype keyboard, drag your finger from the Swype info button (bottom left corner) to the SYM key (next one to the right). Several cursor control options there, plus a few other handy items.
Also, if you didn't know, dragging from the Swype info button to the "F" key will switch the keyboard into a number keypad.

You need to hold 123, not just click it.

Awesome. Thanks for the help. It's exactly what I needed. Will hold me off until Froyo.
Alternativelly you can use the HTC_IME (which is the HTC keyboard) and set the volume buttons to work as up and down. Pretty handy when you want the cursor to skip a few characters. Though indeed the lack of cursor buttons always visible on the keyboard is kind of irritating especially if you come from an HTC.

I actually went through the process of installing the HTC keyboard, which I loved on my Touch Pro 2. It was laggy as hell and basically unusable. I also did not notice any directional arrows.
I've been meaning to try that keyboard again, since I did the one-touch lag fix. I'll do that right now.
**EDIT**
I can't find the option to use the volume buttons to move the cursor. It's also nowhere near as fast as the Samsung keyboard. Not sure why, but I have to seriously slow down my typing to get it to recognize each key press individually. I was hoping it would be better once I did the lag fix. I guess it's a separate issue...

Hmmm I do not have any lag issues with the keyboard.
Have you tried Calibrating it? That option is in Settings (within the program, activated by long pressing the language toggle key)>Text Input>Calibration tool.
Unfortunatelly, indeed, there are no directional arrows in the layout.
The option to set the volume buttons is in Settings (again, within the keyboard itself)>User Interface>Volume Keys.
EDIT: I don't really have any opinion about the default samsung keyboard as it does not support my language (go figure lol) so I have never used it.
Hi,
I have noticed a weird problem with my Iconia A500's keyboard for some time. It seems that I can't hold any key pressed anymore; when I do it looks like the key gets pushed only once. E.g., if I hold the 'g' key, instead of multiple g's appearing only one gets written down. That would't be that much annoying but it seems I can't activate caps lock anymore (when I hold it so it activates it does exactly the same action as when I click it briefly, that is capitalize only te next letter) , the smileys key (it justs inserts ' ' no matter how long I press it instead of displaying te smiley menu) or backspace (now if I want to delete a sentence I have to press backspace once for every letter -- very annoying!!). Also, sometimes, when I'm typing, a certain key remains highlighted.
I am running stock 3.2 Android on the tab but I think the problem's there since 3.1, maybe even before that, I don't think I have noticed it right away and that's the problem, I don't know what really caused this. Maybe it was an Android update, maybe an app update, a virus or a wrong setting.
Thing is it doesn't seem to be a problem with the screen because it's working just fine anywhere else, like games that require multiple touch. Could corrupt keyboard files be a probable cause? Can they be replaced?
I would be really, really grateful if you could give me any advice on this little annoying problem of my tab.
Thanks,
GriGGer
Are you 100% sure that when you long pressed that it would repeat the character (also am I understanding what you wrote correctly?)?
So far every keyboard that I have tried between both my phone and tablet will either do nothing or it will give you some alternate characters like the long pressing the 'e' will give me a '3'.
Do you remember using a different keyboard at some point?
I think your confusing your A500 with another device???
I just tried every keyboard I have installed on my tablet(stock Android, Thumb keyboard, XT9 keyboard, and Swiftkey) and none of them will type multiple letters with a long press on the key. I don't think I've ever seen a keyboard that would do that. Most of them will give a choice of alternate letters/symbols/etc. when you long press.
It seems I have realised what the problem actually was. I didn't think it had any connection with Accesibilty, as the touch and hold delay setting was set to short, but it seems that if I disable Accesibilty completely the problem goes away. Now the alternate characters work as intended. Problem solved!
hi, i discovered kinda weird problem while using fpse, I am kinda relying on its options to quickload/quicksave and on n10, I cant bring this menu up... I though itll be "as usual" by holding recent apps button, but it just dont do anything... friend of mine told me to look for softkey mods, but 99% are just removing them/adding them to phones which have hardware buttons, could someone point me to any mod/another solution which would help me bring apps menu while there is no actual button in app for it and youre depending on hardkeys/softkeys?
solved: partly my idiocy, partly htc/samsung transition, its on back button while holding

Some custom versions of Android can also force the menu overflow key to always appear.
