[Q] Samsung Software vrs HTC - Trying to Decide... - Epic 4G General

How is the software on this phone? I am using a Touch Pro 2 on ATT but I want to switch to Sprint for one of the smart phones. I am trying to decide between Epic and Evo.
I've seen and played with both phones and both seem pretty equal to me. On first glance the Epic feels way lighter and cheaper than the Evo, and I didn't like the keyboard nearly as much as my TP2.
How is the Samsung software? I've never used a Sammy smart phone and I was wondering how their software compares? I've used HTC for the last 4 phones I've owned. With full root can you put HTC software on the epic phone?
Anything else I should be away of in making my decision to switch?

I own all three and currently use the Epic which I just bought yesterday. I use the TP2 for tethering only on an additional line. I can tell you that switching from WM to Android has been fantastic. I was a WM junky and can't stand to use one now.
Initial impressions from EVO to Epic: The EVO is ever so slightly better in quality (build) and the EVO's HTC Sense is more to my liking than the Epic's UI. Other than that, the advantages of the Epic more than offset these and make it my preferred phone.
I don't care what anyone says, there is a huge difference between the image quality of the EVO and Epic. The EVO is bigger, but absolutely nowhere near as nice as the Epic's. Side by side, my wife (who could absolutely care less) preferred the Epic's screen. I didn't care about image quality either, until I had them side by side.

Aria thoughts?

Hey guys, I am going back to AT&T on a family plan so the HD2 is gonna be gone soon. I'm trying to decide between the iPhone 4 and the HTC Aria. I have been a big fan of Android while I've been using it on the HD2 so I'm thinking getting the Aria would be a smart choice, however I was a big fan of the integration with everything that the iPhone had (syncing, iTunes, iPod, etc), so it's kind of hard to compete with that. The iPod feature alone almost makes me want to go back to the iPhone 4, but I'd like to know everyones opinions on the Aria and how it compares with other Android phones.
if you choose the iphone...get the iphone 3gs. girlfriend has the 3gs and my dad has the iphone 4. and i really saw no difference in either one that's worth the extra $100 you'll spend on the iphone 4. i didn't see the huge WOW in the retina display. front facing camera just wasn't another wow for me either. speed..not noticably different. iphone 4 is definitely heavier and bulkier feel.
but don't forget man...no flash on the iphone and adobe and android are already rolling out flash 10.1 this year on the android.
best to make a list of pros and cons of each phone and physically look at it on paper and decide for yourself.
doubletwist gives you everything you get with the iPhone sync/integration (except I don't think it backs up apps).
We have two iPhones and my Aria. The Aria blows them away in every conceivable way. My wife is seriously envious of my phone. You might consider a Captivate, if you are not hooked on the compact dimensions of the Aria.
I've had every iPhone, including the 4, and prefer my aria over them. I, however, would prefer not to be forced to sync my music with itunes. It makes it a hassle when you're at a friends house and want to add some songs to your phone. I had itunes setup so I could sync at home and work and I still had times I wanted to make changes and couldn't. That plus having the 4 without a jailbreak for a couple weeks made me realize I'm not happy with a stock iPhone.
Android has so many features that you have to jailbreak the iPhone to get. That plus widgets and the many ways to customize are what brought me to android.
Compared to other android phones, I would say the aria is right up there. If you'd be happy with a 3.2" screen then you can't go wrong. I feel the build quality is better than the galaxy s phones and that's the only real other choice with at&t right now.
dont get either... get a Captivate, the Aria is a mid range phone... is like having an iphone 3GS but the iphone still better for games... games runs slow in the Aria and some do not run at all due to arias old CPU using ARMv6 instructions... all new phones are coming with ARMv7 and things like Flash and google newest apps only run on ARMv7 cpu. If you do not like the Captivate... the iphone will be the wise choice... If you get the Aria... be prepared to deal with all the restrictions that comes with an old CPU and a 3.2 inch screen. The Aria is only decent if you root the phone and OC the Kernel... and even after that you wont have Full Flash support... if you can wait a month of so and you do not want a big screen device like the Captivate... you can wait for the Motorola MB520, it will have an ARMv7 CPU, PowerVR graphix (for games) and 480x854 3.5 screen...
I wouldn't say its only decent if you root it. I have compared my aria to my wifes iPhone 4 and her captivate both of which went back to ATT. No comparison. Right now if your with ATT its their best phone. The fact they squeezed so much into such a tiny form factor amazes me.

First off, the iphone 4 is everything you're saying its not. There is a huge difference between iphone 4 and 3gs, performance wise. The higher rez display looks way better.
Secondly, yes, the iphone doesn't have flash, neither does the aria. And it never will. It doesn't have the cpu instruction set for it.
I say go for the iphone 4, or for android, at least the captivate.

I thought I'd throw a less-absolutist voice into the fray: I agree that the Aria is a great phone, as in "phone."
The Captivate (and either iPhone, but there are lots of other factors involved in choosing one of those) is a better media center, but for a smartphone, the Aria really hits a sweetspot. The Captivate has no pointing device (trackball, pad, whatever... an incredibly useful addition in many situations, and, coming from a g1 and having many friends with blackberry pearls, getting rid of the ball in favor of optical is a major plus, in my opinion... you never have to clean "light") and the Aria does; the Aria -- believe it or not -- has much less lag.
And touchwiz? The dorkiness of the name is only exceeded by the sloppiness of programming and ugliness of design.
But for entertainment, media, movies and such? The bigger screen is better. If entertainment on the go is your thing, don't get the aria. Not that it won't work, it just isn't as good.
As a phone? The larger-screened, higher-powered phones really aren't better. The Aria is unobtrusive. If you could zoom and/or change font size in gmail (you can, I believe, in CM6, but I'm enjoying sense for the moment) it would be perfect.
People love throwing the phrase "mid-ranged phone" around the same way the android disinclined love saying "software fragmentation!"... and neither really means anything. Except for the fact that you can't use google earth on the aria processor, the difference manifests itself in no way other than better battery life.
And is that a bad thing?
Im gonna keep it short and sweet. I hate Itunes but that's me so iphone wasn't an option. My wife has the 3gs can't stand the phone. I know a couple people with iphone 4g they advised me not to get one they regret it dropped calls biggest problem. So I went and compared the captivate and aria at my local att store. Captivate was sweet but damn its freakin huge but beautiful screen . Aria was fast and snappy and for the most part did every thing the captivate did that I needed and fit in my pocket with a pack of cigs, lol. I spent about 2 hours playing with the phones at att . Came down to : I'm not gonna watch movies on my phone. I'm really not into mobile gaming and the arias plays enough games keep me happy. Came down to size for me the captivate was just to damn big. At first I was pissed I couldn't have live wallpapers but after an easy root and painless cm6 froyo rom I got all I was jealus of in small power house off a phone.

Rom : CyanogenMod-v6.0.0-Liberty (FroYo)
I came from the captivate. The gps issues were a deal breaker for me. Now that I've flashed froyo (CM 6) the aria really rocks. Even before that, I didn't regret taking back the captivate.

If you only want a phone... then the Aria is a good phone... if you want a Phone + entertainment device, the Aria is not the right choice... most of the cool games (3D games) do not run in the Aria, even Google earth made by Google does not run in the Aria, you will not have full Flash, and still an old CPU.
And about the 3GS vs the i4.. it is true, performance wise is about the same... just better screen and front camera.

Switching to Sprint from ATT, Evo or Epic?

I am using a Touch Pro 2 on ATT but I want to switch to Sprint for one of the smart phones. I am trying to decide between Epic and Evo.
I've seen and played with both phones and both seem pretty equal to me. On first glance the Epic feels way lighter and cheaper than the Evo, and I didn't like the keyboard nearly as much as my TP2.

You'd probably get better answers about TouchWiz in another forum, but I can say that I'm not a fan from what I've seen. It would drive me nuts not being able to change the four shortcuts on my homescreen.
The HTC Evo is CyanogenMod supported which, in my opinion, is a very strong selling point.
The HTC Evo also has Froyo. The Galaxy S phones have yet to be updated. I'm pretty sure they'll be seeing an update soon, but you never can tell.
You'll probably never see a full Sense UI ROM on the Epic.
The main thing that I like about the Epic is the Hummingbird processor. I haven't really had an opportunity to play with a Galaxy S phone w/o a T-Mobile sales person breathing down my neck, so I can't really speak to how much better it makes the overall experience.
My opinion would be that if you think you can live without a hardware keyboard, to go with the EVO.
Sorry if that was a bit rambly... I just woke up.

Advantage Epic 4G
1. QWERTY
2. More powerful CPU and GPU crushes Evo's GPU, no comparison
3. Screen is about 5x nicer than Evo's. To be honest, Evo has a really ****ty TFT LCD screen displaying only 65k colors.
Advantage Evo 4G
1. Feels more like a premium device, very heavy for a phone, nice form factor
2. Roughly the same size as Epic, thinner, but way less bezel, more screen.
I keep hearing about all the pixels you can see on the epic. I like my Evo, I'd say if you want to game or need a hardware keyboard go epic otherwise the Evo is great. Most games are payable with the Evo just with a few slowdowns. Battery life is just slightly better on the epic, like 15 mins or something like that.

i work for sprint, I dont think you can go wrong with either. heres what i think...
Epic
Pros: 4G, GORGEOUS screen, Hummingbird processor really flies when scrolling and rendering, Great KB, and DLNA (instead of HDMI)
Cons: Somewhat bulky even though very lightweight, even though screen is gorgeous, colors are over exaggerated, resulting in some pixelation. 5M/VGA cameras versus the Evo 8M/1.3M combo. Capacitive buttons at bottom VERY touchy and buggy
Evo
Pros: 4G, 4.3 inch screen, HUUUUUGE development community, Android Froyo 2.2 out the box, 8M/1.3M camera combo, KICKSTAND!!, 2 flashes on Camera, HTC Sense blows Touchwiz out of the water (even though I prefer LauncherPro), and lastly Evo comes with Youtube with HQ capabilities
Cons: HTC has capped the framerate of the Evo out of the box because of the HDMI controller. Compared to the Epics constant 60fps, it blows a stock Evo out the water when it comes to anything graphical. Scrolling, pinching and zooming, things like that. The 1GHz Snapdragon core is fast as hell when launching programs and multi tasking and performing operations, but it stinks compared to the Epic when it comes to 3D gaming. Now, with that being said, there are plenty of custom roms and kernels that lift the cap on the framerate on the Evo, letting it achieve about 55fps. Close to 60, but not yet.
Screen on Evo is a tad bigger, but looks sort of washed out against the Epic.
HTC Sense is great for the average user, but its Heavy, slow, and hogs up alot of resources.
Dont get me wrong, the are more pros and cons to both, but to ME, those are the big ones. Which one do I recommend?
I RECOMMEND GOING TO A STORE AND PLAYING WITH BOTH TO SEE WITH ONE YOU..ill say it again....YOU...like better
For me, I already own the Evo, and its an awesome device, the Epic isnt enough of an upgrade for me to ditch the Evo. Furthermore, Sprint employees cant buy the Evo or Epic yet anyways. I only got an Evo cuz I was our stores advocate.
I think if I were in a buyers position tho, and was an average user, or even a more than average user, I would definately pick sadly...the Epic.
Now, if your into hacking and overclocking and tinkering your phone, then the Evo is definately the phone for you. There is so much support for the Evo, its truly unbelievable.
At the end, I LOVE my Evo, hands down the best phone ive ever had. You may not think the same, and coming to an Evo forum is gonna get you some very biased answers on which one is better. Go to a store and try them out for yourself. They are both incredible devices
I don't care at all about games but I am really tired of the slowdowns I've come to expect with Windows Mobile.
For instance, sometimes waiting for a text message to appear or for the home screen to load (5-10 seconds) is "normal" for me. I want a snappy device, with a good end-user experience. Like the iphone.
And I wanna customize it, unlike an iphone.
Edit: Thanks for the recommendation, I'll go in today and play with them again....
This post says it all:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770471
id say go with the touch pro 2 again. haha just kidding, i hated owning the touch pro 2, so slow!!
I had a Touch Pro 2 for a month, it was so slow I couldn't even answer calls on it. Literally it would take 30 seconds to press the "answer call" button and by the the call would be disconnected. Also that conference call feature where you could easily add people to a call simply did not exist (i think it only works on the GSM verison)
I actually really, really like the Palm Pixi after seeing it in person. That thing is tiny [that's what she said] and quite underrated.
I kind of want to ditch my Evo for the Palm Pixi but would mainly miss the Google Maps Navigation. [edit I suppose it probably has Sprint Navigation]
I played with a friends epic, and I was not impressed.
touchwiz looks like kindergarten compared to sense.
it was lightweight and nice display, albeit smaller than evo.

I agree with your review here I have 5 Evo's at work and own one myself and yesterday just activated 2 Epic's great phones screen is out of this world. That being said depends on if you want a mechanical keyboard or not. I could go either way bottom line is you can't lose with either phone they are both great. I can say for me the Evo is the best smart phone I have ever owned.
As others have said, the best way to choose is to play with both of them yourself. That being said, a friend of mine got the Epic the other day and I went over to show her how to use it and I like the EVO more. It may just be the fact that I'm more used to my phone or just simply personal preference, I don't know. The Epic is a nice phone, but IMHO, the EVO is better. Everyone is different though and you may feel another way. I'm just happy that after being with Sprint as long as I have (about 10yrs) and dealing with the fact that year after year all the top phones have gone to different carriers, Sprint finally decided to offer 2 very good choices.
I work at a Sprint store and a customer with an Epic came in with an image burned into the screen. I don't know how and I havn't read anything else on it but if I know Samsung then there will be at least one major issue.
The main reason to not get an Epic is the other name attached to it - Samsung. They are, historically, horrible with their smartphones. Slow to release updates, slow or never release updates to fix bugs big and small, marginal support for devices out on the market, and just a complete lack of customer service. As a former owner of an Instinct and a Moment, I cannot recommend buying anything with the Samsung name attached to it except their TVs and computer monitors.
I can, without any doubt in my mind, say that the Evo is the best phone I've ever owned thus far. By itself with no root and no modifications, it is a wonderful phone. Rooting it and putting whatever I want on it to expand its potential only made it a better phone. The guys over at SDX will have a heck of a time ripping out TouchWiz (yuck!) and making the Epic better than it is (it's already rooted, supposedly). I won't even be thinking about a phone upgrade again until at least November to see what's on the market or what's coming to the market (especially from HTC).

[Q] EVO to Epic

I have been an EVO user since the day it came out and today I was offered a trade for the Epic. I was wondering what some of the other EVO to Epic users thoughts were? Its mainly the processor and keyboard that are drawing me into doing this trade, what are some of the other benefits of the Epic?
Thanks
The biggest thing to me was the screen. My gf has an evo and it's a great phone. I would have bought it if it was in stock, but then the epic was on the roadmap so i decided to try it. I really like it. I have some issues with the back button like others, but not a big deal. I also have had battery concerns, but i've been making it for around 15 hours on average and that's using the phone, not just letting it idle. The screen difference in the evo vs epic is like my old rear projector tv vs the best lcd tv on the market. This screen makes everything look so good. I still am amazed everytime i turn it on.
Both are excellent phones. My EVO is rooted with a custom 2.2 ROM and I still feel like my Epic with 2.1 is faster overall. I think once 2.2 is released for the Epic, there will be no comparison.
As stated above, you cannot compare the two displays. Every time I look at my EVO after using my Epic, I am dissatisfied with the display. Regardless of the fact that the EVO's screen is a hair bigger, the quality of the Epic's display is NIGHT & DAY better.
I do prefer HTC’s Sense to Samsung’s TW, but that is a small detail to me.
I will say that I seem to have an overall better 3g data experience with my EVO. As of the last few days, they seem to be dead even as far as 3g is concerned, but when I first got the Epic, it was definitely slower in the bandwidth department.
Battery life for me is slightly better on the Epic and when you consider that I use it a lot more than I did the EVO, it’s actually a lot better.
Overall I can say with certainty that I prefer my Epic over my EVO.
I was using a rooted EVO and the epic feels faster at stock than my evo ever has. Anyway, the screen is a lot better, the crappy viewing angles on the evo always bothered me. The keyboard is really nice for emulators and other games, although it takes a little getting used to. Th battery life on the evo is better as of now, but as a long time evo user I can say the epic at launc has far better battery life than the evo did, its taken a lot of updates to get the evo where it is now.
Basically the evo is only better in two ways right now, battery life and GPS performance, and I expect both of those to get better on the epic, and when the epic gets froyo there won't be much comparison. The evo was nice but it is wa outcassed by the epic imo.

You really gotta try it out first. Biggest thing for me is the Camera is way better on the Epic. Panoramic pictures are very neat you have to try it.
I have both the Evo and Epic, and they are both great, the Evo has so much more hacking done to it then the Epic, but i'm sure that will change soon.
I didn't really like the Epic at first, I missed my evo the first two days I turned on the Epic.. I thought i'd fire the Evo back up... but the Epic has really Grown on me. I found a battery tweak that gives me better battery life then the EVO. I'm not looking back.
Like everyone else, I too believe the Epic to be a much faster device overall. Of course, you listed that as a pro as well as the screen.
So beyond that, the camera is also much better. I've been seeing photos of higher quality overall. My EVO photos come out over saturated and the detail isn't as good. However, I find that my EVO performs better indoors as far as sharpness is concerned.
The Epic is also able to play 720p MKV\divx files out of the box without converting them. This is great for me, as I hate having to convert movies for the EVO. They look absolutely gorgeous on the Epic's 4" Super AMOLED screen. The EVO's GPU can not handle high quality movies.
Gaming is a much more enjoyable experience on the Epic. 3D games and graphically intense apps will run at a much higher framerate on the Epic. The EVO's GPU is NOT futureproof at all, as it uses the same processor that HTC has been putting in phones since the Nexus One. If you're concerned at all about 3D games coming out in the future, you're better off with an Epic.
The keyboard also makes for a pretty great gaming experience. Be advised that it is NOT as fast as swype when it comes to texting and emails. The keyboard is spaced kinda oddly which makes typing a bit difficult. But overall I like it. I use it all the time. Also, if your screen is off, you can turn it on AND unlock the phone by opening the keyboard. This saves you from trying to hit that button and then swyping to unlock
I find that voice quality is also better on the Epic. I used to complain about this on the EVO. I had trouble hearing people. However, people also complain that the Epic picks up a lot of background noise. I dont use my phone much when driving but I imagine it would be annoying.
The Epic connects to 4G much faster, and I'm getting better speeds. However, the 3G connection is shoddy at best. You won't see ANYONE praising the Epic's 3G speeds over the EVO.
For me there isn't much to consider. I never use my EVO anymore because there is nothing it can do that my Epic can't... but there is plenty my Epic can do that my EVO can not. But the things that the Epic can do aren't a priority for everyone.
One last thing to consider. HTC has done a great job at getting out updates and fixes for the EVO. Samsung hasn't really done jack for any version of the Galaxy S phones out... including fixing the GPS and 3G issues on the Epic. 2.2 is probably a long ways away... but honestly, I don't think we need it. I only want 2.2 because it apparently fixes the headphone jack for the dock.
Thanks everyone this has helped me confirm my decision to go through with the trade and will be a proud Epic owner by 6 tonight.

Is Epic your first Android phone?

If you are unhappy with the phone, is it because of the phone or Android?
Epic popped my cherry. I was waiting for a wp7 device until I heard it was 2011 for sprint. Android as a os is better than I expected. The samsung half of things has some rough edges but I knew that going in.

My smartphone path started with a Motorola Q9C which got me addicted to a physical keyboard. Next was a HTC Mogul, then a Touch Pro which I held on to forever until the Epic. As ready as I was to move off of the Touch Pro there really hadn't been anything with a physical keyboard until the Epic that tempted me.
There are some things I miss about Windows Mobile, and one or two things I don't like about the Epic, but the good outnumbers the bad.
I went from a Vogue, to a Diamond to a TP2. However, this isn't my first Android rodeo exactly. I'd toyed with it off and on on all 3 phones. Most recently I was running the increasingly-polished 2.2 build on my TP2. It was still missing a few key features, but had been my full-time platform in the final month I used the TP2.
I also recently went back and installed the fully native Android that runs off internal memory on the Vogue so my daughter could have something to play with for games/apps and movies on trips, etc. It doesn't have a data plan though so once the TP2 Android build gets close to the level of maturity the Vogue has I'll likely do the same thing with it as it at least has wifi and a much better screen.
I definitely fall on the power user side of things, but I've curiously had no itch whatsoever to root my Epic or try a different shell/launcher yet.
See the sig.
Ya its my first and I love android! I've had winmo 6.1 and 6.5 on my mogul, tp, and tp2 now epic!! Android is where its at! Ha

I just finally upgraded my treo 700p and went with the epic.
What can I say...
WOW.
Just upgraded from my old Mogul that I've had since launch. I'm still learning my way around Android, and don't want to pay for any UI apps until froyo drops. So far, so good, though I liked the Mogul's keys better.
I started out with the HTC Hero, then went to the HTC EVO (shortly took it back cause it was definitely not worth the money... worst phone I've ever used), shortly after I traded my defective Hero in for the Samsung Moment while waiting for the Epic. The Epic is by far the best phone I have ever used!
The Epic is my first Android device. Came from a Blackberry Curve that was my first smartphone. I definitely miss the workhorse BB but I love the Epic. Battery on the old Curve was awesome compared to the Epic but I never really go to long without having a place to charge so it's not an issue. I swore by BB for email and messaging but the lack of a decent web browser really sealed it's fate. Even after I saw the new OS 6 I wasn't impressed. I don't think I'll ever go back to a BB. Android is far easier to use and much more customizable. And it's not locked down in a black turtleneck.
I started vogue, to diamond, touch pro, then issues with that went into a tp2, got evo gave to my girl, got epic ... typically HTC. Has been my thing I do like the epic but there are times where I find myself thinking... why did I pay this much for this again. I may be spoiled but I was honestly expecting a bit more. Maybe its the somewhat shortage of development or perhaps my inability to motivate myself in learning all the quirks of android since I spent three years learning the winmo cooking roms and all that.... overall 8/10 on epic but 4/10 on samsung brand overall....

I upgraded to the Epic after having a Sidekick 2008 for like 2 years and let me tell you: no comparison. I have experience with kernel and the source code so this whole Android whatchamadoodle works out a whole lot better for me. Loving the Epic, loving Android ;-)
The epic is my first adroid phone and I'll be an android fan for life as well as a samsung fan. I came from an instinct to the epic. I love this phone and I love this platform. I just wish the battery life was better.

epic is my first android phone. I came from the iphone3g and was just getting sick of apple's closed system policy in general. It's a great gadget when it's jailbroken, but it's a ****ty phone. I was going to wait out my contract and go to whatever the best android phone was going to be on the market, but the month leading up to the release of the epic saw nearly daily dropped calls and complete loss of data on multiple occasions. So anyway, had it since launch and have been very happy since. (Just wish my damn screen wouldn't wobble )
Nope, first Android phone was the G1, which I had for a little over two years. Love Android and got hooked on the modding community. I'm mixed on the phone, the processor and stuff are great, keyboard and battery life could be better.
Started with the mogul -> vogue -> diamond -> evo -> epic
I gave the evo to my sis.
Cons:
I do miss some of the features from the evo, ie kickstand/hdmi out
bit bulky, I don't really need the keyboard and would have preferred a keyboard-less like the fascinate but sadly we don't have that option.
GPS issue is horrid compared to my experience with the other phones.
Some quirks here and there like the capacitive button placement is different.
No dock that I know of.
Pros:
good graphical performance and pretty snappy.
the color saturation/contrast is great
keyboard is a very good when used.
I like the notification screen control panel at the top. Better than having to use widgets.
Overall:
Satisfied. The epic is not perfect but I am happy with it. It was a significant step up from the diamond but more of a sidestep from the Evo. If they addressed all my cons, then it'd be the nearly perfect phone for me; but until then the epic will suffice.
My first android phone was the intercept then I saw the epic and switched

My 1st Android phone was a dark dark time in my life. Unfortunately in a moment of stupidity, I impulse bought the Moment without reading up on it. That phone made me want to die inside every time it rang. Sprint burnt me on the 30 day thing (long story) so I was pretty well boned. I hated Sprint, Samsung and Android because of that horrific piece of hardware.
After 5 Moments I couldn't stand it anymore and I picked up the Epic (at retail pricing) shortly after it came out and was completely impressed - until I found out that phone freaked out when uploading. Not wanting to get burnt again, I returned my 1st Epic. I loved the phone otherwise but that upload problem was a show stopper.
Low and Behold - Sprint and Samsung actually fixed the problem with DI18! After the torment I went through on the Moment I really wasn't optimistic but holy hell, this new one works! Maybe Samsung/Sprint learned something from the Moment. I was so excited to have a working Android w/ keyboard on Sprint I actually bought 2 of them to rid my wife of her aging blackberry as well. It's a little bulky, but I always wanted a palmtop computer.
My 1st Android experience was a colossal clusterfudge, but the DI18 Epic won me back. I'll be destroying the Moment with extreme prejudice in mid to late November. I'll be sure to catch it on video to share with everyone on the Moment forums.
First smart phone was a palm pre. Liked many of my wife's phone a htc hero features. Bought me a htc evo. Later I saw the epic and passed on my evo to the wife. Had a ipod with ios which is simular to a iphone ios and I must say that android is a lot better. I love android!
Epic is my first Android phone and I couldn't be happier. Also still have and use my Palm Pre but even overclocked to the max, the stock Epic is so fast. I like lots of the aspects of the Pre but the Epic is digital crack for me!
Have used I Phone 3 & 4, Evo & Droid with friends and they too agree the Epic is way faster and sexier. No phone is perfect but this phone is damn close.

New Phone, Evo or Epic

Hey guys coming from and incredible and I love it but I have to switch to sprint and would like some input on these two phones. I know the general info so I was more looking for developer style info such as roms and speed with said roms and just general developer support.
Here is what I have so far.
Epic
Faster
Better Screen
Gorilla Glass
Better GPU
Same battery life
Slide out keyboard.
Bigger SD card included with phone. 16 vs 8
Evo
Bigger screen
Stand
HDMI out
Better Developer Support?
More Rom's
Better 3G 4G performance along with wifi hotspot active connections.
What am I missing for some reason I feel like I should go Evo even though its dated, the slide out keyboard isn't a must for me but I feel like it would be nice.
I hate the amoled screens personally. Looks to oversaturated imo. I don't like slide out keyboards either. Not saying the epic isn't a good phone as I've never owned one, but I wouldn't trade my evo for one. So my vote would be the evo.
Thanks I am kind of thinking the same thing the HTC phones are great and I have had really good luck with my incredible with roms. Does the TouchWiz samsung thing good or how does it compare to Sense?
I own and evo and my friend has the epic which I rooted and setup...... go with the EVO. It's simply better and the community support on XDA as least is better for the Evo.
Evo, but you wouldn't consider the Shift? Shift would be a better bet than the Epic. Slightly smaller screen, people are saying the keyboard is better though. Know you said that wasn't necessarily a deal breaker but worth a mention.

I thought about the thunderbolt but its got no support we don't know if its rootable yet do we? I don't mind going with Verizon but I hear you can use verizon towers with sprint and its less money and has 4g.
I just switched from epic to evo and here's my deciding factors...
The slide keyboard makes the phone feel cheap overall. Others say its a general Samsung thing with cheap feeling phones but I prefer the weight and solidity of the evo. And I don't use the keyboard but for emulator gaming.
My eyes seem to take a liking to the evo screen more than samoled.
And the development seems to be way ahead of epic, granted time on market...
like someone already said, the shift seems like a good compromise of the two. i know it has an 800mhz processor as opposed the the 1ghz that the epic and evo both have. But its the same processor as the T-mobile G-2 and it is just as fast as my evo.
The Evo. I switched to the Epic a couple months ago from the Evo. I realized it was a bad choice in about 2 days. The keyboard on the phone won't get all the input that you type in. And I type fast, so this annoyed me greatly. Though, the camera on the Epic was better than the Evo's. But still, Evo > Epic. The Samsung UI is also kind of crappy. I love sense so much more, that is why I had to switch back to the Evo.
Ok well it seems like the epic is out as most people think other phones are better or suggest other phones all together.

what kinda of phone are you on now?? I know one could wait forever just waiting for the lastest and greatest are always around the corner. But seeing the phones coming out of CES now sprint should have some details about their next flagship phone for this summer at CTIA it might be just worth waiting
I have the incredible now and to tell you the truth it works great, just need a phone for private use and want to go with Sprint I won't be able to make it to the summer and really don't do much with my phone but email and some utilities like wifi stuff work typing things.
Evo all the way!!!!
Evo, the wife got an Epic even after I kept tellin her to get the Evo. More for the keyboard. Touchwiz sucks, can't believe it didn't even have a flip album like sense. Little things like that you take for granted. Hated how the keyboard would always slighty open while holding it with one hand. And to me the camera didn't work that well. She ended up gettin the Evo and me one to for Xmas Sprint employee.

I have both, got my Evo on launch day, got my Epic a month or so ago. Needless to say I am using my Evo again. Epic is a great phone and a great performer but I enjoy the Evo more personally. You really need to use both and see which sticks out for you but I would go with the Evo....in fact, I did.
Definitely go evo. Much much better dev support and more importantly much better support from htc as opposed to the no updates from samsung.
EVO.. is best choice.. for me.
you ask in an evo subforum... get X answer
you ask in the epic subforum... get Y answer
this may not be a good way for you to help you make this choice.
it can all boil down to ...
HTC vs Samsung
htc wins .. silently brilliant
I was in the same boat ...
EVO has better build quality, better design, no extra free space on top or bottom of the screen, better screen (IMHO) .... Feels premium device. Oh yes huge development support here at XDA.
EPIC has better GPU, Keyboard (which I don't care for, may be big deal for you), SAMOLED (which I think isn't suitable for browsing and reading).
I am VERY happy with my EVO. Get an EVO root, Flash ROM, throw a speedy Kernel in and You won't look at the EPIC again.
Just wanted to put my two cents in.
I was in the same boat as the OP not too long ago.
From a performance perspective, I expected similar results from both, even though epic has the faster processor (how much faster...?). The previous phone also had a keyboard that went mostly unused 95% of the time. Software wise I expected both to be similar as both are based on the same OS.
I later found out the evo does indeed have much better development support at this time. Epic being a newer product is still catching up I suspect.
But overall, 2 reasons why I went with the evo
1) larger screen
2) price - got this for $110 OTD during the holiday promotions.
And actually, #2 was really the final deciding factor.
