Hey guys I just wanted to make sure that I preformed the unroot correctly...I don't see the superuser icon anymore...I also applied the lag fix but I haven't gotten rid of it...or atleast not that I know of..you guys think they'll find out about it if I send in my phone for warranty?

Two things you can do to make sure you're unrooted. One, you can simply go into adb shell, type 'su', if you don't get the # sign, you're good.
Also, if you're really worried about it, use odin and flash back to stock. It takes about 5 minutes and you're done. Refer to this link....

Also, I'm moving this to the general section.
Ok thanks

Hey guys, I'm new to the Android community and I'm completely in love with it now that I had the phone for several weeks. Like every other phone I get, I'm always eager to customize it in all the ways possible.
So here is my question, rooting seems simple enough with the great guides you guys have here. However, I've heard that Android 2.2 is right around the corner with new great features. I read that if you upgrade your firmware, it will un-root your phone back to stock.
I'm already hungry to try the new features that a rooted phone can do but I'm thinking that this update is worth waiting for since this phone is new anyways.
Any opinions?
Steps for success:
1. Root phone.
2. Wait for 2.2.
3. Download a 2.2 rom with root.
Were would I find the rooted roms?

In the development section.
Its a file you can find . Its not a rom. Your phone will still get the ota even after you root it. Can't say the same for custom roms

Cool, thanks for the quick responds guys.

Absolutely ROOT. I have some things to do once rooted in the sticky, please let me know if you have suggestions.
Rooting have nothing to do with ota update but flashing a customer rom will.

I'm thinking of rooting. My battery life is a joke. The only thing I miss about Nexus One besides trackball notifications.

Not sure how rooting your phone is going to solve your battery issues? All that rooting does is give you root (superuser) permissions on your phone. You can do this to remove the bloatware that came preinstalled on the phone, run various apps that require root. But I can't think of any way that it's going to allow you to save battery life that you couldn't already do non-rooted.
My only reason to root was for wifi-tethering...
I know the newer version of Facebook is a battery eater. I switched back to the older style and my phone is happy again.
Root is great.
1. Remove bloat apps
2. Remove the annoying T-mobile jingle
3. Root Explorer is fun to play with
I think thats all I've really done so far. Well I should that I've wanted to really do so far.
Rooting isn't working for me otherwise I would have to agree :-(
^ could you give a little more detail, so we can help?
Do you have the update file named update.zip.zip by accident?
I pretty much had the same question. But after a little reading just now I actually understand what rooting is. Helps that I'm familiar with linux! Attempting to root in 5 4 3...

So if you don't have a data plan you can't get the ota update? You must root? Mine is on AT&T with no data plan right now.
Isn't there much more to rooting then apps and root control? I've seen all the custome ROMs people get to customize the phone and theme just about everything.

No I just Have a file named update.zip. I have tried two different methods twice now and once I'm in recovery and go to flash the zip it says it isn't there. I don't know what it is I'm doing wrong.

So I rooted my phone earlier today. It was unbelievably easy to get the whole set up going.
Haven't had much time to fool around with it yet except for several apps that require root access, mainly to flash and back up my data in case of an oops.

Ok so i managed to undo my hacked webtop, but i never unrooted my phone before updating to 4.1.57. Now my phone is updated and it says its on 4.1.57 but it still has super user and that still functions? Does this mean it is still rooted? I thought it was supposed to be removed? I am sort of confused whether this is good or bad? Any input? Thanks
Try to run something that requests for su permission... it wont work....

same here but i didnt have the webtop hack just aroot and tether bypass and i still have all of what i had before super user and t-back up and my bypass for tethering....looks like i am still rooted can get into all files and what not
i did use some root required apps like root manager and they all work?

Can you go to adb or terminal and do "su"? It probably won't work.
A lot of other people were misinformed as well. The old apps are there but don't have root permissions. The Dev section has a dead simple script to run to root it though. You need to undo all mods or flash to stock and then follow their instructions.
I reversed my mods in a few minutes (redexed and reversed WTM) then I upgraded, rooted and deodexed and did the WTM again
oh ok, im not sure how to do that im very new to all this but i will take your word for it, can you help me on how to undo all the mods? Should i just unroot it? How do i redex and reverse wtm and what is wtm im so sorry for my questions .

WTM = Webtopmod.
I'm not an expert but I'm well versed with command lines and basic programming. Your best bet is to flash everything to stock rather than reversing the mods manually. This will give you a fresh slate to work with.
I presume that you have an AT&T Atrix so here's the link to the thread you need. It has all the appropriate info and I suggest you post any further questions in there. I always try hitting threads and helping everyone out where I can. If I can't get to your next inquiry, I'm sure someone else can help.
I don't go out much but the wife and I are going to a concert.. so next time I'm XDA tonight I'm going to be pissed drunk and probably lipping people off.
(don't drink and post!)
Thanks so much, but last question for some reason the link wont show up?
Try running titanium backup. If that starts then you sir, still have root access
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
yep bongd was right the original apps i had still work but no new ones work,
so what do you guys suggest that i wipe my atrix and reinstall everything? is there anyway to back up with out root access?
the dead-on telltale test:
download Terminal Emulator from the market, open it, and type "su". if you get a #, then you have root.
Hello everybody! I'm new to the forums. I also got a really big question to ask. Well I usually root my phone with Visionary using a TempRoot. Then I updaed my Evo Shift via OTA, or going to the HTC Software update thing and now I can't really root my phone I guess. Is there a solution to root my phone even though I have Gingerbread? If not right now, maybe soon? I really want to use the tethering app to tether to my PS3. PLEASE HELP!!!!
As of now no there is not. And it might take a while before there is one. Idk if your phone already came with the ota update, but if it didn't you could have waited cuz the same day the ota went live there was a rooted version here already.
Just about 2 hrs later it was rooted.Pretty much a fundemental, if htc or sprint push out an ota update it will unroot your phone.

You can use the sprint RUU to downgrade to froyo and then root it, worked for me, I'm not on my computer so I can't link it but it shouldn't be that hard to find. And instead of temp rooting it there's a nice gui in the dev section that will perm root it pretty easily then u can flash the rooted 2.3 update through CWM

I'll try it out right now. If I could find it. BUT I REALLY REALLY APPRECIATE PEOPLE LIKE YOU. No homo
Now wouldn't the RUU thing erase all the data on my phone. Do I need a computer to use the RUU thing?
You will need a computer but if you remember setting up your gingerbread update it asks if you want to back up your device on google..... Use ruu to go back root and flash a rom like cm7 and you can restore your device or you can use titanium backup to... Well... Back up and restore your apps. Also google as you know backs up your contacts. So you should be set.... Anyone else let me know if there is something i missed.

I'm tremendously sorry, but can you walk me through the steps. Like how to use and where to get the RUU. I just don't want to mess up my phone or waste time. Please, I REALLY appreciate your help.

The RUU can be found in the Evo Shift wiki by going to the following URL: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Speedy
Luckily the RUU pretty much walks you through the process itself. You'll need the HTC sync drivers if I remember correctly in order for it to find your phone. You should be all good. Good luck, dood

I have not been able to do tis all day at work i tried 3 different devices and no go im starting to think that its not possible and you will have to wait for a new root.. (which is never a long wait).... Thanks to the fine people here at XDA.

So I know I can Google it, and I kind of did, but is anyone willing to help me out?

No need to google, just Do not use rom manager...
And....
What build is ur continnie on?
That's exactly what I was using Lol... Well I used z4 and then SuperOneClick, the latter tells me I'm rooted, I did it like three times, because I read you have to do it twice... I have SuperUser so, I'm thinking I'm rooted, I gave this a break though, otherwise I'd have downloaded like Barnacle and tried to use that.
It's on what Samsung gave it, 2.1 Eclair, and it's slow as hell. Right now, it powers off following boot, not sure why, but I looked into Odin-ing, lots of dead links, and Windows 7 in Parallels doesn't detect it in Downloading.... Mode, so I think I need a legit PC.... I won't be revisiting this for at least a few days, no rush, but thanks for thee replies!

I suggest reading the forum. There are some different themes, mods and tweaked roms for each build level. Some are complete other not so much so reading is essential so you don't brick your phone.
Here is a good place to start. the Odin file here downloads and is what I use. Some of the links are broken if they are ask and someone should be able to fix the link or get you the file directly. (I have folders dedicated to the two builds I have worked from either ec09 or eg04).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1316769
and another in case you ever decide to take the leap to eg04, the program here is essential for changing softkeys.

I have the tar file if you want me to send you it, then just go into download mode and flash it and you will have cwm.

I just ordered this phone and have some last minute questions.
Should the first thing I do when I get the device be to root it?
Will I loose something if I decide to use it straight out of the box and then later decide to root?
I kinda get the impression that you have to do a factory reset after rooting, am I correct assuming that? If so I might as well begin with rooting.
And lastly, if I root will I be able to receive updates from LG and installing without it messing up the phone?
Sorry for all the questions, even though I've been using Android for several years I really haven't rooted before, so just want to be safe
Anyways, thanks to anyone who wants to teach me and put my worries to rest

If you root you'll lose the opportunity to get OTAs but you can just install them as a stock ROM that's been updated to it.
Thanks for the quick reply! Think I'll have to research a bit more before I make a decision
