[INFO]A New Kind of Lag Fix - Captivate Android Development

A fine fellow named supercurio over on the I9000 boards has found a way to do a FULL FILE SYSTEM REPLACEMENT. It just started beta testing and the results are VERY positive. He's indicated that he is interested in porting it to the other variants, so I wanted to make everyone aware.
This whole thing started in a bounty thread to fix the I/O issues on the SGS, so I was hoping maybe the Captivate community could go over there and throw some cash into the pot to sweeten the deal a bit and show our support for what he's doing- this will also hopefully increase the likelihood of a port =P

supercurio joins the discussion at the bottom of page 6
Of course if you haven't already, and are using one of the current lagfixes you might consider throwing a few bucks Tayutama and RyanZAs way as they've been absolutely instrumental in the process of getting this lag fix movement off the ground in the first place!
Tayutama's Donate Link
RyanZA's Donate Link
And lastly, a little something to get your mouths watering:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tc_PbQe1WVk
Launching and closing some games:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYcRq6ln0fc

This is a huge step in the right direction. In for this !

I'll be following this, as of course, ryan, tayutama zilch and I have been just waiting for a way to replace the damned rfs.

Wow that looks good, can't wait to help test out the beta. I'll be donating as it progresses along. Any word on when the beta will release?

Well right now the I9000 crowd is testing, he had a really limited beta release yesterday. I told him I've got a spare captivate for a couple days if he wants to run any bizarre experiments without fear of bricking, hopefully he'll take me up on it

I hope so, i'm running the I-9k JM1 rom on my captivate right now without a lag fix just cause and it works great! can't imagine the difference this will make.

This sounds like the lag fix I've been waiting for. Once it is out of private beta, and compiled for the Captivate, we need it added to SRE. Can someone get Samsung to add this to stock FroYo and ditch RFS for good.

[SOURCE] Supercurio's EXT4-based "Voodoo"Lag Fix
Picked this from the vibrant forums
Hey everyone,
Seems Supercurio has finally got a beta of his true fix for the lag on Samsung Galaxy S phones. The github is below.
DO NOT FLASH ON A CAPTIVATE until there is a Captivate version. This is posted to developers can take a look at the source code and start implementing it for the captivate.
http://github.com/voodoo-project/lagfix
Hopefully unhelpful or someone else can integrate this fix into his OC\Stock kernels, and we can enjoy our phones without the typical "galaxy s" lag/stuttering.
HUGE thanks to supercurio for all his hard work putting this together
EDIT: lol, guess he hasnt posted the source yet. the ramdisk is available in the download section.
Enjoy! Happy coding!

DO NOT flash this to your captivate. This is based on an I9000 kernel, so all the I9000 problems come with it. Wait for one of our devs to convert it over to stock Captivate.
It does however work using I9000 firmwares- I9000 kernel glitches still apply =P

Nope, just a patched kernel and a script should do it. This is the holy grail of lagfixes, I believe.
A bit early for us, but here is his compiled kernel and source code:

I am planning to flash this to my JM7 ROM once i get home lets see how that goes.

I'm running it from an I9000 ROM atm, but you HAVE to keep the I9000 kernel for it to function, you can't switch back to the Captivate one, and seeing as how there's no revert for this ATM this might not be for everyone
Also Rom Manager doesn't work with this =P

Calls and data work just fine. I'm using the I9000 kernel and a JG8 modem firmware (so I get 850 and 1900 mhz bands), it should still work with the stock captivate modem files too.
Basically you have to deal with reflashing a kernel whenever you want to run an update.zip and autorotate is boned

anilkuj, I'd make the "DO NOT FLASH ON CAPTIVATE" text bold, huge, and red just so people will for sure see it. Otherwise you KNOW people are going to do it.

Yeah I'm running a couple experiments to see how badly people can/will screw themselves up if they do lol

Gingerbread ported to another galaxy

Anyone smarter than me know if we can work off of this at all?

Galaxy S with Nexus S kernel - Booting Nexus S Android Gingerbread
Videos are here:
http://www.youtube.com/supercurioxda
What's about this port:
- It uses the Nexus S kernel compiled from sources
- It runs the exact /system image release, we dumped yesterday. (I spent the night of it so it's still the same day!)
Am i French ?
Now you don't have any doubt anymore
Which filesystem ?
This early preview runs on Ext4. no RFS at all, the kernel don't support RFS.
Does everything work ?
Nope, but I must admit I didn't expect such a result.
Don't work: GPS / Voice / Wifi / some Buttons / camera
Work: everything else: like sound, GL acceleration etc
Will it work ?
I think most of it will work after countless hours spent on it.
Is it flashable with Odin ?
That's a good idea <Gregounech>, i think i'll do that tomorrow.
Do you work alone ?
I worked alone to produce this preview, but not to produce the dump yesterday.
Credits go the IRC channel #NSdev on freenode !
What about a team ?
That's the goal. Rendez-vous on IRC so we can produce ports and improve the quality very fast of this.
Is this opensource ?
Everything will be released after i get some sleep!
Edit: for inpatients, I pushed the latest initramfs : https://github.com/project-voodoo/nsonsgs-initramfs

I have been obsessively following efforts at cyanogen forums and this forum... i am pretty on top of things, and i am NOT aware of any success taking kernels/roms/images from GSM and having them work on CDMA...damn right depressing
The problem is deeper than just kernel. There are fundamental issues as to why we're not already on 2.2...
I'd go into it, but this thread isn't about that. Plus, I am not a programmer, so I don't want to overstep my bounds.
It's significantly easier to port things on GSM versions of phones. We likely won't see it until at least Froyo is working on our devices, possibly later. This also shouldn't be in the Development forum...

Well, thanks anyway. I haven't had the device since September.
I just wanted to remind anyone new to Fascinate Modding, that there is NO GINGERBREAD ROM for the SAMSUNG FASCINATE at this time.
So if you are itching to flash a ROM from a different phone. Please DO NOT BE MISLED by this thread and flash Gingerbread for a i9000.

2.2.1 Deodexed Roms - Einherjar Dev Team

First of all, I have a Vibrant not an I9000.
As part of the Vibrant Ragnarok Project, I deodex everyone of your 2.2.1 leaks within minutes. I use them for what I need. But, if there is a market for stock deodexed 2.2.1 Roms over here then I can start posting them. Is there?
Also, I theme these and mod these roms, take a look over in the Vibrant development forum and let me know if you would be interested in seeing the same over here. Just look for the Einherjar Dev Team releases.

It just boggles my mind that the 2.2.1 roms cause the Vibrant to reboot whenever the strength of the signal gets stronger the -70 dbm..

This is a just leaked rom for the galaxy s. hopefully the devs can use it for the vibrant.
well even if not at least we know now that Samsung wasn't lying about March for the euro/Asian markets.
Nice, hopefully we will be able to use this to our advantage?
Also, couldn't we flash this since we now have the kernel that allow us to flash i900 ROMS? If we could just flash those files, then flash the kernel through Odin somehow it might work. Idk though, I'm no dev.

damb, this is so great, im thinking maybe tonight we might have a port for the vibrant, and i wonder if eugene and krylon know about this considering, it just today got leaked, a few hours ago.............. anyways, everyone post on this, lets get the hype going, we want this baby ported ASAP.. always thanks so much eugene and krylon, my brothers of galaxy android
So far from what i've read over there...
Looks like quadrant scores are not improved over 2.2 which is what i'm sure most people are hoping for. It also appears that the screen off animation is not present in the rom. It's also using Touchwiz 3.0 and not 4. Market is broken, and gingerbread keyboard also not included. Looks like an early beta build from what i've read.
**edit**
market is working, they have root access, and they are in the process of deodexing.
So far from what i've read over there...
damn double post. please delete
Sweet, hope we can get some cooked roms soon

The kernel that allows us to flash i9000 ROMs is only 2.2 and 2.2.1 compatible. I'm pretty sure someone would have to build a new kernel to let us flash that or port the ROM over.
The crowds are getting restless over there. They're in an uproar about "this is missing" and "that is missing". One of the complaints is about the gingerbread wallpaper being missing. But these guys forget that our 2.1 devices didn't come with stock 2.1 walls. They instead came with whatever wallpapers samsung gave us. Overall it's starting to sound more complete than the first froyo leaks that we used to have which is reassuring. Some of the guys say that the leak is stable and everything is working on their devices. One of the nice improvements they're reporting is functioning hardware acceleration.
No TV-off?! NOooOoO!

Funny to see their behavior over it when we are just sinking our teeth into 2.2.1. Maybe its a good thing though.. I myself am so pleased with the performance boost of 2.2.1 that I'm in no rush to flash again but of course I'm in the minority on that.

[KERNEL][JVB]TalonDev Hourlies

This is just eXistZ's Talon kernel from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1050206
I was on the TalonDEV IRC channel and we had an interesting idea, that since the development is going so fast over the next few days, it'd be nice to have hourlies. Thus, I set a server up for the i9000 hourlies and the captivate hourlies. These are UNTESTED and UNSTABLE! It may very well break your phone, but these will be the most cutting edge Talon kernels you can get. You are welcome to ask for help in this thread or on the Talon IRC channel (irc.freenode.net #suckerpunch), but KEEP IT OUT OF THE CURRENT TALONDEV THREAD!
You may find the Captivate kernels (date and time stamped) here
If you want to look at the i9000 kernels or the build script, you may find those here: http://talondev.sailerboy.net/
Thanks to ytt3r, eXistZ, and anyone listed in eXistZ's thread.
I get no credit for this, I'm just hosting them and compiling them. Go over to eXistZ if you want to donate anything.
These are built every hour. Cappy is on the half hour, i9000 is on the hour.
Changelogs can be found at the newest commits here: https://github.com/existz/linux_gt-i9000-gb/commits/gingerbread-dev
These are all CWM flashable. Make sure you pick the right phone.
NOTE: If you notice that it takes more then 5-10 min to build (captivate starts at the 30, i9000 at the 00), you should probably use a previous build or wait for the next build. The build environments aren't seperate and the builds may conflict, potentially bricking your phone. I plan to fix this later.

im still skeptical about moving on to ICS for the vibrant just bc i need a phone that works 100% correctly all the time... so im still on froyo.

essentially froyo tweaked in many ways w/ the appwidgetpicker
along with the miui camera, s.gps2 for gps fix, setcpu, and bln
is anyone else flashing any additional necessary files when they flash their roms??

Fishman is good. My needs are different. I need a Rom that is atleast 2.2.1. So the capacitive buttons dont blind me on each screen press. I'd recommend ultimate rom or biwinning with the sense or sgs2 theme. I also use Bali undervolt kernel. If you haven't already test out the modems for your area. For instance for me its KB1.

CM9's 16B is so functional that I put it on my Dad's phone, and he says it's running much better than it did before on Bionix. The only issue he and I have been having is the GPS, which never has worked from the beginning for us anyways, and very minor things (like the menu for toggle widgets is called lockscreens or something).
ICS is pretty awesome. You may want to give it a shot... I recommend the Icy Glitch kernel to go with CM9.

when you say never worked, do you mean it as GPS ideally should? or even to the low standards of how the vibrant's GPS is supposed to work?
personally since everything works 100% as best as it possibly can right now on my vibrant with bionix fishman mod without a hardware gps fix, i'm very reluctant to move onto ICS if the GPS wont even lock within around 30 secs or so like i can get it to do with froyo especially if it is something i need eventually
minor things like menu names i can definitely deal with, but if froyo's GPS works better overall compared to an ICS rom, i see absolutely no reason to make the switch with this phone. if i need ICS that badly, i will get a new phone
