Is there any way to check why you Dell Streak randomly reboots or shuts down. Sort of like a log of why the phone crashed. Just like you would check on a PC when its shuts down. The reason I ask is because my phone shut down on me and would not start back up until I removed the battery and placed it back then it turned on. I would like to know if an app caused this or something else. Please help
Did you do anything? 1.6 or 2.1 ?
No did nothing. The only app I added that day was streak vibrations. It stopped the vibrating of the back, home and menu buttons. I uninstalled since the power down yesterday.
Sent from my Dell Streak
I think you could install 2.1 to see what will happen if you want.
check your back plate. if the back plate is not securely put in place the phone will randomly reboot. you have to be very forceful when applying pressure to the backplate to make sure it fixs correctly
flumps is right, it's happened to me too, though the back plate doesn't have to be loose, if it flexes enough to break a contact for a moment I think that can do it.
The one time it happened to me the Streak had been in my pocket for a while (in it's leather case but still being joggled a lot) and would not switch on, I had to remove the battery to clear it.
My phone acts same way.

My phone was on a table when I suddenly saw button lights came on. I thought I had a phone call. Instead, I saw Dell logo and it started up. I have 1.6 and not rooted.
:
you can logcat it theres alogcat in the market place that will read logs. (but tends to crash for me far too often)
also you can connect it to your pc and use ddms from the android sdk

I have an o2 Exec and frequently have the problem that the screen goes white and I can't see anything. It tends to happen either when I reopen phone after making or receiving a call (I always have the screen facing in when taking or making calls), or when I open the screen to check a message. I get the feeling that it is linked to the phone app. Its done it since I had the phone, and upgrading the firmware hasn't affected it.
I have found that the best way to get it back is to remove the power and put it back in, or just connect it to power. but sometimes i can spend 10 minutes messing around before it comes back.
Has anyone else had this problem, or know what might be causing it? I don't have any extra software installed other than what it comes with.
Try using it without an SD card for a few days, my Wife had the same problem in her Wizard, turns out if she removes the SD card fault goes away. Regards
cpu
it happens to me with cpuxcsalar installed, removed it, all back in business.
do you have this soft installed?
Rip, I don't have any extra software installed which is what makes it so strange. Gooroo, yes I have a 1Gb SD card in, I'll see how I go with out it for a while. Its certainly something I never thought of. Its a big let down though if that is the culprit.
I'll update this after I've done some testing.
Thanks
I hope your SD is under warranty still, mind you they are getting really cheap now anyway. We only discovered the fault after getting the wifes wizard changed under warranty and then finding exactly the same problem with the new one too. Seemed to happen after the device had gone to sleep on its own, then when waking it up she would get a white screen. Most of the time it was battery out to get it back working again. If she pressed the power button to put it to sleep and then woke it up again it worked fine, and if she let the screen go off and then brought it back again before it had gone to suspend it was fine too. Really weird.
Anyway let us know how you get on
Well I've been running for a few days without my SDcard installed and I'm still getting the same problem. It seems to be definitely linked to the phone app. I usually have the Exec open on my desk, then if I make a call and close the lid to use it like a normal phone, when I open it again the screen is white. Normally, connecting the power, then disconecting it again kicks it back into life.
Very strange!
Sounds like you need a replacement under warranty. You have tried the latest rom, you are running next to nothing in the way of additional applications and you have removed your SD card. I guess you can only try a hardware reset to see if the problem is still there, as O2 are going to ask you to do it anyway. If that fails to sort it get it replaced under warranty.
At first I though it was because of Toms Rom version 2, I ignored it as it happens randomly. It was at its worse when I was at computex first week of june.
Today, I finally got a chance to reflash it with toms updated rom, which is brilliant, very fast. At first I didnt have any power outs at all, but suddenly later today it happened again but this time worse, sometimes it wont turn back on. Id have to do random things like taking out the battery and putting it back on for it to turn on, sometimes, it just wont, id wait a few minutes then it it works and turns back on again.
So im sure it isnt toms rom anymore since no one else reported this issue.
I also though it could be a loose slide, but sometimes when I just try to move the slide around, nothing happens, it wont turn off, pop the slide in and out and in and out and its fine, then a few minutes later, phone is off again. Sometimes in the middle of a call it goes off.
Very very irritating indeed.
Any ideas on what I should do? Has any1 else tried this?
send it to the manufacturer
I have the same problem. I contacted my dealer and they seemed to know how to fix it. I have sent the phone to them, but I haven't got it back yet.
It's definitely a hardware problem, not software
Ok got it, but I need to flash it back to original ROM first or else warranty will be void.
Thanks guys!
Im really leaning more towards this being slide problem, upon testing and testing,
It turns off when:
When I am connected via USB to PC and I slide out, it shuts off.
When I slide keypad back in with its own force (not guided by the hands, just letting it drop), it shuts off.
wow guys the problem is solved! :-D
Big thanks to DaVinci for pointing it out to me, when I tried it, no more power outs no matter how I test it!
Solution: Clean the battery terminals! Thats it. I used a pencil eracer then cotton swab with alcohol.
Saved me a lot of trouble! No all I can do is enjoy toms latest, blazing fast ROM!!!
Yeaaaaaaaaah baby!!
My phone died today and when I got home to charge it, I noticed that after pressing the sleep/power button, the screen turns off and then about a second later comes back on. It does this regardless of if it's plugged in or not. I took it into Sprint and they're going to give me a new one when they get their paws on some. Right now I'm just looking for ANY possible work around to the problem.
I've done a factory reset, added a pattern/code, and installed NO LOCK but nothing can keep the screen from coming back on after pushing the power button...
(I also had another problem with the phone, the camera has a HOT PINK tinge about 85% opacity. I can go without the camera for a few weeks until the new one gets here but any help with that is very welcome)

Everything is stock.
Mine had a similar problem when I was on 2.1 I would charge the phone overnight and at some point in time the phone would turn the screen on and not turn back off. Or sometimes it would sitting on my desk and just randomly turn the screen on. After I upgraded to 2.2 it stopped. I never could figure out what was causing it to wake.
Are you using ChoiceDialer+? There is a known bug where the screen will not shut off after making a call with ChoiceDialer, though a reboot does fix it.
Recieved my HD yesterday, and this is the symptom of the issue:
When the phone reaches its screen timeout (whether its 30 secs or 10 mins) period it the phone turns off completely. It is not possible to then turn the phone back on using the power switch or any other way. The only way the phone can be turned back on is to take the battery out and put it back in.
Initially i thought maybe it was the battery and somehow it didnt have proper connection with the copper contacts. However if i turn off the screen timeout off completely then the phone stays on and doesnt turn off. So as long as the phone doesnt go into power save mode or screen timeout its fine and stays on. Its also not the power switch as the switch works fine other wise.
I rang HTC support, spoke to some clueless call centre lady who tried to tell me it might be a proximity issue. I dont think it is as i dont have any issues when making or receiving calls. The problem is for some reason screen timeout causing the phone to completely shut down. I have searched on a few forums and cant seem to find anyone else with this issue.........FML
Forgot to add, i have also done the following:
- Reset to factory default
- Checked for udpates (get a message saying my phone is up to date)
- Made sure phone sim cover and battery cover are properly secured
Nothing has worked so far

So the switch turns the phone off and on again, or just off?
switch turns phone on and off any other time but after screen lockout kicks in it doesnt do anything, i have to take the battery out to turn the phone back on.
In a normal scenario if i want to power the phone down and then power it back up again then it is fine
Hope that makes sense
It really sounds like a software issue.
Is your DHD branded or unlocked?
Maybe try install some of the custom roms from arround the forum.I use LeeDroid 1.2 and it works like a charm.
Go to "ROM Development" thread. There are a few HOW-TOs on the top. There is always a risk u mess things up but it's small and from how it sounds, u don't have much of a choice anyway good luck
Its a branded "Orange" phone from the UK. I think im just going to return it and get a replacement and if i still have issues then ill try your suggestion thanks. Really disappointing, Desire HD seems to be riddled with issues.
I'll be using my Samsung Focus and all of a sudden, I'll see "slide down to power off" I slide up (of course) but the phone shuts off a few seconds later. When I try to turn it back on, the white SAMSUNG shows up for a few seconds then shuts back off then back on. It takes a few tries for me to actually get the phone on and working, but it always shuts down eventually. If anyone has experienced this problem and fixed it please let me know! I'm leaving for college very soon and need to get this fixed. Thanks!!!

We need more details about the phone:
HW Revision (1.3/1/4)
ROM: stock/custom
OS version
What you're describing is symptom of power button being continuously pressed. You might need to clean it or change it.
I have the latest update on the phone and it is stock. How would I go about cleaning the power button or changing it?

I don't know of any specific video for repairing the power button, unfortunately.
However, here is a thread on repairing the screen, which gives you an idea how to open the phone. Keep in mind that if you do open it, you lose your warranty so if you want to keep it, don't open it.
Here and here are other 2 videos on opening the Focus, hope this helps.
I will watch those videos and see if I can learn anything from it. I might just have to get a new phone Thanks for the help!
Blah
I have the same problem, and it seems related to the battery life going really low. im ordering a new Battery, tell me if anything improves with yours.
Id like to report that getting a new battery has completely resolved this problem, even at low charges.
