[Q] Problem with FlashRec - Hero, G2 Touch General

I'm trying to install the latest version of Ammon-Ra custom recovery but the "flash" button in Flash Rec is greyed out.
I understand this happens when you don't type in the path correctly or have a spelling mistake but neither apply to me.
I place the img file, named "recovery-RA-Hero-v1.7.0.1.img", in the sdcard root and type in:
"/sdcard/recovery-RA-Hero-v1.7.0.1.img" but the button is still greyed out.
I even renamed the img file to aaa.img (and several other things) and typed in:
"/sdcard/aaa.img" etc...
I've tried re-downloading to img and also re-installing FlashRec but it doesn't work...
Using:
HTC Hero (TMobile UK)
Cronos Droid 2.14
FlashRec 1.1.3
Amon Ra 1.7.0.1
What am I doing wrong?

Newer ROMs will not allow FlashRec iirc.
If your ROM has the flash_image binary, use the command "adb shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/recoveryimagename.img" from adb on your pc.
There's an update.zip in the AmonRA thread too.

Thanks, I'll give it a go.
btw, whats iirc?

If I Remember Correctly - google still exists you know!?

Thanks pulsar, I gave it a shot and it worked a treat..

Pre-Rooted HTC, flashed new custom recovery. Cannot boot into.

Hi Guys,
A while ago I used the flashrec app to flash a custom recovery on my unlocked hero which worked well. I'd been using this for ages to flash custom rooted roms etc onto my device.
Today I decided to update the recovery rom to recovery-ra-hero-v1.6.2.img by terminal emulator. (su, flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-ra-hero-v1.6.2.img). This didn't work! When I try and enter recovery mode (hold down HOME whilst booting), it freezes.
I can still get into my rooted rom, and it still appears via adb, but I cannot flash any custom recoveries! When I try to flash via adb I get the wonderful 'downloading 'boot.img'... FAILED (remote: not allow)' error.
Any idea how I can flash the recovery?
Cheers,
Matt
Have you tried using Flashrec again?

5. Download this APK and recovery image and save it to your computer:
http://zenthought.org/content/project/flashrec - FlashRec.apk
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=561124 - Amon_Ra’s Hero Recovery Image
6. Copy them both to your SD card (do NOT put them inside any folders on the SD card, just put them on the SD card itself).
7. Unplug the phone from the computer once they are downloaded to the SD card.
8. Go to the Market and download ASTRO File Manager or any file manager program if you do not already have one.
9. Open the file manager and find the FlashRec apk file and click it and choose open app manager and then install it.
10. When it is installed click Open. Click on Backup Recovery Image and wait for it to finish. If you get "backup failed" response see the text on the right for more details, if the backup is a success carry on to step 11.
a. Installing the correct HTC ROM
Orange UK Users - Please downgrade your ROM version to 2.73.61.5
Generic Hero Users - Please downgrade to 2.73.405.5, or follow the goldcard method if this doesn't work
T-Mobile UK Users – Please follow the "Goldcard" method below
All Other Users - Please follow the "Goldcard" method below
11. Once done, click on the empty text box in the FlashRec program and type:
/sdcard/recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img
(replace exact name as new versions come out)
Then click on the Flash Recovery Image button and wait for it to finish.

I have yes, forgot to say in OP - sorry! It gives the generic 'flashing failed' message.
I think I've narrowed it down to my running hboot 1.76.0007. Am I right in thinking this version doesn't allow non-htc images to be booted?
I wouldn't know about the hboot stuff sorry...
... But I did once read that an older version of Flashrec worked where the latest did not,... worth a try?
http://code.google.com/p/flashrec/downloads/detail?name=flashrec-1.1.2-20090909.apk
Same error - backup failed: could not run command.
I have a android backup which should include the previous recovery image. Is there any way of restoring that from a terminal in the rom or via adb?
I don't think a Nandroid backup covers the recovery... and I wouldn't know about restoring it through adb.
Only other things I can think of are,...
1... Find out how to update recovery through fastboot? ( I once looked into this but dint get v-far)
2... Run a HTC RUU .exe and start from scratch.
I'd go option 2 for ease, 1 if you want to educate yourself.
I think I've already tried number 1 - "fastboot flash recovery recovery-ra-hero-v1.6.2.img" and got an error: "remote does not allow".
Looks like I'm going to have to go down the RUU route. Hopefully I'll be able to restore a recent nandroid backup once it's complete!
Thanks for your help!

Can't install RA recovery onto rogers magic - please help

I am using this website, and am at step 6. Everything up to this point has been going well, but i cannot get the recovery image to copy over. BTW I have the recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0H.img file i'm using. When I type to push the file to the SDcard, it says, the transfer failed because the file system is read only.
How do I fix this? I've restarted the phone, taken the SD card in and out, i've typed adb remount, and nothing is working.
. Open command prompt and go to the Tools folder in Android SDK that you downloaded to create the gold card.
Assuming that you have not changed the file name of the recovery, use the following commands:
cd C:\AndroidSDk\tools
adb push recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img /sdcard/
adb shell
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img (file name of the recovery you downloaded)
OK, i've got that working, now another problem...
cd C:\AndroidSDk\tools
adb push recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img /sdcard/
adb shell
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img (file name of the recovery you downloaded)
7. After the recovery has been flashed, go to the following link to download the ENG SPL for HTC MAGIC 32A (SPL: 1.76.2007)
http://www.4shared.com/file/21114537...07-signed.html
8. Now copy the SPL to your memory card.
adb push update-hboot-1762007-signed.zip /sdcard/
9. Restart your phone using the home + power key till it boots up into the recovery mode.
(or just type 'adb shell reboot recovery')
10. Using the 'Flash zip file' option from the recovery, select the SPL file from the memory card and flash the HBOOT on your phone
Now i've done most of that, but when I restart into recovery mode, it keeps on randomly rebooting even though I don't want it to. I clicked on 'flash zip file' and it just rebooted right away.
Now when I flashed the recovery, the command prompt said that it did it, BUT nothing happened on my phone, it was just sitting there and didn't say it was doing anything. Could this be a problem?
OK i kept trying, and finally i got it to go into 'flash zip file', I clicked on the correct zip file, but right after clicking the screen went black and it restarted.
Does this sound like it worked? How do I check to confirm if it worked and it's rooted?
Ok I did this, and it said ADB is already running in root in the cmd, so i think i'm good!!!
Thanks!
The easiest way to test if the device is rooted is to open another command prompt in the tools dir and type
adb root
If it returns that adab is already running in root, then you're all set.
So as i said, i installed the sapphire recovery, but now i'm reading on the wiki page that you need the HERO recovery file. I need to change the radio, but then it is saying i needed the HERO recovery.
This is so damn confusing why can't anyone get this all straight and not have so many different and totally contradicting methods.
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.p...agic32A_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod#6.35.x_Radios
The wiki here says to use the HERO recovery, but this thread only gives the sapphire recovery for the HTC magic.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530492
Now to clarify i checked and i think i have successfully rooted, but the specs are this.
Sapphire PVT 32A ship s-on H
Hboot-1.76.0008
CPLD-12
RADIO-6.35.08.29
I'm told i need to change the radio now before I can install the cyanogen rom, is this true?
I can't find out what to do because no one seems to talk about the 1.76.0008 spl...
Any help?
OK so more playing and more following guides, I installed the HERO recovery tool (1.6.2), and updated the radio to 6.35.10.18, changed my SPL to 1.76.2007, and have my PVT 32A ENG S-OFF H setup.
I'm confused though, because I did all of this work so I can install the lastest cyanogen rom, but it says it can't use this version of the radio... what the hell?
Someone REALLY needs to fix these tutorials to be self consistant.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=605239
follow this, got it all done, then go here to get the cyanogen mod...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=673394.
What do I do now?? Do I downgrade my radio or just use a different rom?

Here is a link to a test kernel port file for CM 5.0.8 from Brian Crook. This should allow you to run CM using your current Radio. Like I say it's a test port and I haven't tried it but Brian is the one that does all the ports to the Rogers 3.x radios.
http://briancrook.ca/android/testing/
you'll need to download the file bc-5.0.8-6355-ebi1-signed.zip
You would use recovery to flash CM 5.0.8 then flash this kernel port file. After that don't forget to flash the gapps package that should be linked in one of the URL's that you already posted or you can get it here http://kanged.net/mirror/download.php?file=gapps-ds-ERE36B-signed.zip
PLEASE NOTE
Do not change your radio from it's current 6.x version without flashing the matching SPL for the new radio. If you fail to flash the SPL/Radio combination correctly you WILL brick your phone.

Can't get recovery image on my Hero (rooted)

Hi,
last year, I rooted my Hero, then I bought a Desire. But now my girlfriend would like to use my Hero. So I took my rooted Hero and tried to reflash a new rom, but on one way or another, it keeps failing.
I tried to re-install a new recovery, but accidentaly chose CDMA-hero instead of GSM-hero. Now I can't get into a recovery. When I try to boot the phone, while holding Home button, I only get the HERO-logo... I can get into fastboot though.
I remember I just installed a rooted stock rom: HTC Generic 2.73.405.66. Now I'm reading that this rom results in troubles installing a recovery. I tried EVERYTHING:
- flashrec: can't backup my image, can't flash a recovery (button greyed out)
- tried to downgrade to 2.73.405.5 as suggested on the homepage of flashrec
- tried the guide on modaco: http://android.modaco.com/content/h...ng-the-patched-recovery-image-on-your-device/
My situation is now: Hero is rooted, but my Hero doesn't have a recovery image...and I really need one to flash a custom rom on it...
Can anyone help me please?
Greetings,
Why not try this :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4898505&postcount=1
Code:
Copy recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img to the root of your sdcard
Boot into your current custom recovery (boot while holding HOME)
Connect your Hero via usb to your pc/mac/...
adb shell
$su (not required if you have root already)
#mount -a
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img
Change to this on my gsm hero today and easy enough to do via adb.
If above doesn't work. Just downgrade to 2.73.405.5 - use the goldcard method in my guide in my sig. Simple.

euhm, the problem is, that I even can't get into recovery since it crashes and keeps showing the HERO-logo... and I already said that I can't downgrade, the process returns an error 'wrong client id' or something... I don't need the goldcard since my Hero is unbranded.

[Q] MT3G bad recovery flash, stuck

Hi,
I have a mt3g, TMobile. CyanogenMod 6.1.0, ClockWork recovery. Used ROM Managed to flash Amon Ra recovery, since I needed to re-calibrate the battery. It asked me to pick phone model, picked Ion/MyTouch 3G. After reboot:
- Stuck on splash screen if I try to go to recovery
- When booted up - a bunch of force closures, keeps playing a ringtone over and over and...
Everything I tried to do through ROM Manager didn't help.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

Do you still have root? If you can get into ROM manager, reflash clockwork recovery, then wipe cache, dalvik, and run a fix permissions. That should get you back up and running long enough to try again to flash amon ra.
Not sure if the oem spl will let you fastboot flash a new recovery but that's your most reliable bet.
It sounds like it might be time to do a full wipe and reflash anyway. Have you heard of Ohsaka's SuperWipe?
I tried reflashing Clockwork through ROM Manager. It says "root granted", "clockwork flashed" immediately. When I try to boot into recovery - I get stuck on green MyTouch screen forever. Battery pull is the only way out.
I guess the problem is that I cannot get to any recovery anymore. Any ideas?
Do you have fastboot. If so you can flash recovery from there.

Fastboot is a different mode. Boot into hboot (vol down + power I think) and then select fasboot from the menu. Then plug into computer. From a command prompt type:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
The recovery needs to be in your tools or platform-tools folder and named recovery.img for this to work. Otherwise it would be fastboot flash recovery c:\path\to\recoveryfilename.img. Make sense?
Link to Amon_Ra Recovery 1.7 for MT3G 32B. http://www.filefactory.com/file/caa48b0/n/recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0G-cyan.img
Otherwise keep trying with ROM Manager. Might take a few attempts to get recovery to stick, even temporarily. It did for me. Flash once then flash again. There's also an option in ROM Manager settings to erase recovery prior to flashing. Check that and see if it helps.

I appreciate your help.
When I try to flash recovery.img, I get this: error: cannot load `recovery.img`
When I try running fastboot with absolute path, I get: FAILED (remote: not allow). Is there a way to fix this?
Tried flashing through ROM Manager many times - no result.

Interesting... Where are you trying to flash recovery.img and getting that error? What method are you using? Are you sure you have the path to recovery.img correct?
As for fastboot, you need an S-OFF/engineering spl so I guess that's out.
What happens if you use Terminal Emulator?
su
flash_image recovery sdcard/recovery.img
Does that work? Keep at it, you have root so not all is lost. Eventually you will get there.
EDIT - make sure you rename the recovery to "recovery.img" and leave it on the root of your sdcard for my italicized instructions above to work. What ROM are you running? If flash_image doesn't work I need to know which version of the binary to give you.

Problem recovery flashing htc magic

I tried flashing amon ra 1.7 on my 32a htc magic which is rooted using androot using terminal emulayor app.But now when I try to go to recovery pressing home and power I m stuck on a screen showing a phone and a triangle next to it with a !.
Anybody else facing this problem?
it looks like you're back to the old days method...
I tried this on my Desire, and i needed to get "rooting tools"/"root-tools"
within this folder is several files. locate win-recovery.bat and click it.
This pushes you to the custom recovery menu
There's probably a command you can type in the command prompt of your computer, but Im a bit unsure if what it is... but its probably
fsatboot boot "recoveryimage.img" (recoveryimg being the name of the img-file)
you need sdk tools for that, and put the recovery image in the tools folder.
when in command prompt you need to be located in that tools folder to, as you write the commands

What you see is stock recovery.
You attempt to flash custom recovery did not succeed!
Try it once more...
Maybe follow my guide (check my signature) and do step 5/7 only.

That is a fastboot command and not an "internal" command.
For this to work you have to be in fastboot mode!
That command will actually try too boot the recovery image and not to flash it!
It is also disallowed from all newer perfected spls.
The guy wants to flash the recovery using an terminal emulator and hence must use internal commands.
The "flash_image" binary combined with the right recovery image is what he have to use.

Never do the above unless you are sure that the bat file only does what you say it will.
It also for the Desire device which has a completely different layout and procedure.(Nand-lock and all that!)
