After the last news that they say that in May probably there should promise to be Android 2.2 (Froyo): what do you think that it will do SonyEricsson? Will it update 2.1 (eclair) or to 2.2 (Froyo)?
I think that if it updates Eclair(2.1) it will be an error because Froyo has many progress
Rgds
SE will not update to a system that is not available during the updateprocess...
who says it's unavailable? to you and me, maybe
Yes well.. It's still undergoing production and isn't done.
I bet that the update will be to 2.1: they have started the work on 1.6 and they have released the phone with 1.6 even if 2.1 was already available for months. SE will probably never update to 2.2.
i don't know...i wouldn't be so sure of it
even tho Froyo is "undergoing production" that doesn't mean that they can't be working together with google or whoever's developing it and test it on the way it's being done
if that weren't possible than that would mean that first we'd have to wait for Froyo to come out and then NO phone in general would have it for months until the phones are adjusted, that to me doesn't make sense
it's like saying windows 8 is awailable but none of you can install it on your system until we've adjusted it
if you get my point...

That already, it is logical, but SE has said that it will update 2.1 in September, that's why he was asking about it because it is supposed that in September Froyo 2.2 will have already gone out
X10 will be a constantly the 'last version' phone. We're stuck with 1.6 when 2.1 is out in the wild, and we will be stuck with 2.1 when all other phones have 2.2.

SE's comments regarding upgrades were all part of the below article: can you please tell me where in there Harold de Kort (Communications Manager at Sony Ericsson) states that the X10 will be upgraded specifically to Android 2.1, or where he mentions "September" as a release date?
Major update for Xperia X10 after Summer
In the final paragraph the writer even states specifically that SE hasn't stated which version of the Android SE will be going to with the X10:
Although Sony Ericssn has to make her own interface available for a higher version of Android, the interface will not chage a lot. Sony Ericsson herself does not make a statement on which version of Android the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will receive in the second half of this year and therefore doesn't confirm that it will concern an Android 2.1 update.

The info you are referencing comes from a post on Engadget from late last week which was unsubstantiated rumor from a "trusted" but un-named source who was wrong on in regards to his claim that 2.1 would bring multi-touch to the X10. I wouldn't put any stock in the rest of his claims.

This is not necessarily a bad thing. This means that we will always have a stable and well known platform. If SE would apply the policy to always updated the phone to the second last version, it would be great. But my fear is that, as usual with SE, we will not get too many updates, maybe only one major update and then a minor bug fixing update. Then the phone will be "abandonware"... like the Xperia X1.

perhaps not so much a problem with the X10 - being Android based it will be easier for them to upgrade the base OS.. unless they have a complete change of direction with their own overlay... (which wouldn't surprise me!)

Come on, it was not so difficult to upgrade the X1 from Windows Mobile 6.1 to 6.5, and all the buyers would have been happy. This way, SE has just collected a lot of unhappy or angry customers. Moreover, this has been always the habit of SE: abandon the development of their phone after the release and leave the customers with bugs and issues. I really hope they've changed they strategy.

To my understanding, most WinMo 6.1 devices weren't upgraded to WinMo 6.5. My iPAQ 910c certainly wasn't.
I'm not confident that the x10 itself will receive an update at all. This is my 3rd Android device and my first SE device.
As a result of all the nonsense surrounding MT and colour support I've lost faith in SE already.
I think there xperia line will have upgraded OS's, but I don't know about the X10.
I've never had this much trouble with HTC devices (but I guess that has been down to this forum).

You are right. However, it is not a good way to keep customers. And SE has already a constantly decrease in market share, and I think that the only way to reverse that trend is to build the reputation of a very high customer satisfaction. For smarphones, this means frequent and effective software updates.
Fair enough.
I just think that if they can take so long, to release their flagship handset in first place, and taking their supposed track record into account. Should we really expect 2.1 at least anytime soon?
After taking all those extra months to get the device ready for consumers, they release a device with a substandard input method, slow camera speed and poor in call volume.
Their famed customizations also have issues. Timescape is slow and on occasion I have to press keys several times for the system to register my input (mediascape).
We should be worrying about stability and and performance updates on 1.6 before we consider 2x.
This phone has so much potential but it still seems like a prototype to me.
yea it desperately needs an update. having said that, even though its running 1.6, it DOES have the latest kernel dosent it?
i'm hoping the fact that it comes with a 2 year warranty instead of the 1 year all other phones come with is an indication that we'll get reasonable updates past a year.
also- SE was the first to acknowledge the existance of 2.2, remember? when some guy mentioned the x10 will get 2.x
A Sony Ericsson rep confirmed to me that it will be a 2.x update in Sept.
She also said that their reasoning behind 1.6 was to ensure network compatibility so it could be sold across all networks, but I'm not sure if that makes much sense.
I am pretty sure that the gyus here at XDA will do something for us if SE will not give the right version in time. I had 6.5 on X1 for more than 9 months without any SE involement

Has anyone in other countries got any news that they will see 2.1 soon?
Where did you get this info from?
http://japanese.engadget.com/2010/04/28/xperia-android-2-1/
Ah, reading it again said it wasn't for sure - and was based on an UK announcement ^^;;
I remember i've read somewhere (forgot where) a Rogers rep. saying X10 will get 2.x in September.
So, i assume is true now that 2 sources made the same announcement.
Problem is, we need firmware updates in meantime to fix those damn bugs we have.
September seems likely for 2.x... hopefully 2.2.
However, I would caution believing anything Engadget posts about the X10. They have posted numerous unsubstantiated rumors about the X10 over the past few months, and most have been incorrect.

Yeah, I'm thinking the same. If baseband .16 is released for the X10a before Rogers releases it (which is likely), I'll then de-brand.

SE again take too much time.
We might see other handset makers moving to 2.3 when SE release 2.1 update.
Ya, also just thought of this.....no 2.2 means no adobe flash???
Hope they address the battery issue first it just drains on my x10

I jsut can't believe that we still need to wait till Q4 while others already running 2.1 for some time already. SE really should speed things up a little bit! In Q4 X10 properly will be an out dated phone....
if we have custom ROMs until then I couldn't care less about official updates

I thought about that too but I have since found out that the flash plugin could possible be made available as an app from the market.
See here:http://http://androidandme.com/2010/03/news/adobe-details-flash-10-1-installations/
It makes sense as it was originally understood that you needed 2.1 to run flash and not 2.2 (Froyo).
I guess having 2.2 means it's preinstalled.
Time will tell!
I guess that as 2.2 is not fully released yet, it is difficult for SE to say how or if it could be implemented. I've had SE phones for years and they are always very wary about promising things before they know they can deliever.
But I do agree that in this more open and enlightened age, SE need to engage more with their customer base...
I've always had issues with the Linux community releasing far too many releases far too often..
Very true in regards to 2.2 not being available yet. On the positive side of things SE can very well change their minds and go with 2.2 (if available). At this point they can only promise 2.1 although they should bump the timeframe up. Rogers is coming with the Acer liquid e which is preinstalled with 2.1 so SE needs to take that into consideration and bump the date up at least to june/july.

SE could change their minds but I think that if they have announced 2.1 it will be because they are currently working on 2.1.
Just as SE originally announced 1.6 and they delayed and delayed until 2.x was released. The launch was delayed so much that we all thought 2.1 could possibly ship with the x10. However the reason for the delay was down to bugs e.t.c. I guess they expect more of the same with 2.1.
If they were to change their minds and bring 2.2, we'd be waiting until the end of Q1 2011.
I just hope they are planning to support the device beyond the 2.1 OS.
I think they have said that they will continue to provide updates during the phone's lifespan (whatever that is....) But I guess they want to develop against a stable platform and no doubt don't want to develop against 2.2 until all the initial bugs are ironed out....
Hopefully they will speed up their development cycles, 6 months to migrate to a new baseline is far too long for their flagship device.....

No doubt!
They should have make it into 2 releases for 2.1: 2.1 w/ all existing features/SE apps + bug fixes tested by mid year (June-July time frame) and another one with all those nice and new apps + features in Q4. That way we can be on par with the other (newer) Android phones sooner.
They should hire me as their release manager
On the other hand there is no incentive for SE to keep up the pace for X10 when they will announce newer phones later this year/early next year

Android 2.2 Froyo, UXP & Multitouch for Xperia X10 in Q1 2011

Oh God, I hope that's not your website, because that design is absolutely hideous, the writing is terrible, the site is over-cluttered with ads, and he doesn't even link to the original tweet.
Also: Look at the actual twitter account.
First hint it's fake? The writing is grammatically poor.
Second (more obvious hint it's fake): "Twitter for Blackberry", because he wouldn't use his own products on Android or Symbian
Third hint: It's not a Verified Account
Fourth hint: All the people he's following are Indonesian. Do you think the CEO of a Global Company would only follow a bunch of people from Indonesia?
Anyway, it looks like some ****stirrer trying to stir up some ****. Sigh.
Yeah fake and the website sucks too. My browser stuck
Now that's what I like to call a Suckathon.
Umm there actually is a multitouch update coming out in Q1 2011... that part was not fake.

Multi-touch is real and there is another update coming out in Q1 2011... though it isn't 2.2. It's just an expansion to the current 2.1. will probably change our firmware version from 2.1 Update-1 to 2.1 Update-2 or something.
I label this as FAKE
Found on twitter Brazil and linked to "complain here" reclameaqui.com website. I had to use google translate, but it seems some regions may be discussing getting official 2.3 in Q4 2011.
Edit: SE Brazil withdrew statement the next day saying the Arc would have 2.3 and older devices will stay on current Android OS. I was really hoping SE had a change of heart. Instead, they quickly confirmed we are on our own. Oh well, Sorry Guys
Edit March 24, 2011: Sony Ericsson released statement that due to consumer response and development of Gingerbread for the Arc and Play has allowed SE to bring 2.3.3 update to the X10. Update scheduled for end of Q2-beginning of Q3 2011(june/july).
Edit June 15, 2011: SE Brazil releases statement that multitouch will be implemented in the 2.3.3 update, allowing for 3D maps etc. Some people speculate that SE Brazil is talking about dualtouch. However, SE addresses this in the comments saying that SE knows the difference between dualtouch and multitouch.

Regarding questions on the upgrade of the line Xperia smartphone to version 2.2 of Android, Sony Ericsson announced that in 2011 the company will focus efforts on its new line of Xperia handsets that come with the most current version of Android 2.3 from the product Xperia (tm) Arc. The devices that are already in the portfolio company's released so far, will keep the version 2.1 of the Android operating system, updated in December 2010, and it offers unique features entertainment such as video recording in HD, plus access to thousands new applications and a unique user experience with graphical user interfaces richer. ****June 15, 2011- SE Brazil posts on their blog.....
With the update release date approaching, many readers want to know what changes, what changes and what will not happen with the Xperia ™ X10.
Thinking about it, the Preview will make a series of posts about these key points. The goal is to answer the questions as the information is released by Sony Ericsson.
The first point: the long awaited multi-touch will be included in the update for the Gingerbread (Android 2.3). So a lot of apps that already run perfectly in version 2.1 of the system, gain new functions.
For example, Google Maps, you can change the perspective and view of the map even more clearly the projection of the 3D buildings, when they become available in the area that is viewed by the user.
Preview Track for more important points explained, as the changes and what does not change the operation of the X10. Until then.
I think there'll be a message from Sony which says: The information from SE Brazil is wrong, there won't be any updates.
But it would be cool to get that update.
doesn't 2.3 require 512mb ram?
There's a 2.3 custom rom for the X10, so it works fine with less than 512MB.

A long way off. But it would be nice if they confirm that 2.3 is still on the table and being discussed.
Let's see how it ends
I think it's not real
until Nov 2011 we will have cracked bootloader and Android 4.0 LOL :-D
Wow.. I'm from Brazil and I didn't see that.
It really says "We reported that Sony Ericsson will not release the 2.2 version of Android, but the 2.3 which is expected in October 2011" but I think this is 100% bull**** from the PR person just to shut the customer complain down. Most companies does that on this site.
"...but the 2.3 which is expected in October 2011..."
I really, really, really, really doubt this. Like, why such a random month like October? It's 8 months from now till October, so wtf...
Well, you know it took about 4 months to release 435 FW, with crappy Mediascape pinchzooming and calendar...
So I don't surprised if it would take a year to rollout a 2.3 for SEX10. But I would really surprised if they do this ever ))
Amazing surprise
although im becoming happier with my phone every time i use it. I would love to get 2.3 on here.
After analyzing this, I have a conclusion: it isn't real.
I have some points to say that.
1. SE says that X10 running 2.1 delivers a full good experience for the users, so they'll rather to keep it in that way. They'd supposedly have problems developing a 2.2 version (I think that's just an excuse but... meh), so working in 2.3 for X10 means even more problems for them. They just won't make the effort.
2. I think X10 will be supported only until june or july. Then SE will start to work in the possible next Android version (2.4?) BUT only for Arc, Neo and PlayStation phone. But, in case that an update comes in Q4 of 2011 for X10 it won't be Gingerbread for sure, most likely another ROM build version with some improvements.
3. I don't know about any company to be interested on upgrading a phone that originally came with 1.6 to 2.3, no matter if the phone could be capable to run it. SE won't be the first.
So... Sorry guys, but this will not happen. I had the little hope too when I saw the new.
