What to do with my phone now? - XPERIA X10 General

Hey.
I got my xperia x10i from Dubai about 3 days ago. I opened my device up, and to my surprise there was no Market. I searched about and found out that Dubai disallowed the Market app in their devices.
I'm upset at the stores for not informing me about this disadvantage. I would go buy my device from the UK or even Canada if I knew. They won't let me return my device even.
So anyways, I'm asking all you Android smarties if I can somehow make my device into a UK version or any version that includes the Market. I'm willing to root my device or lose all my data. I haven't made too much progress with the phone anyways.
I heard about rebranding the device but I don't fully understand what this means.
All help would be greatly appreciated

Just de-brand it to UK Generic and all will be well again. Search it using Google or start with xperiax10.net, there's an article there about de-branding. Mine did not come with the PlayNow Arena and Auto Internet was grayed out, so I de-brand it to UK Generic. Hope this helps...

Do you mean re-brand or de-brand? Just making sure

Debrand....

follow this tutorial on how to de-brand
http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=195467
on the first step use the UK generic firmware (R1FA016)
after you have you have completed all the steps
then you can update your phone to the latest firmware (R2BA026)with PC companion

Hi Mark,
If you open market enabler and set a custom value of 310260 you should see paid and other unavailable apps in the market.

What do you mean it doesn't support your network? Afaik, what market enabler does is trick the Market app that you're on a specific carrier, ie. Tmobile[us]. So you can then have access to the paid apps.

It's fairly straight forward once you follow the guide (I used the giude on the Modaco site), although I did think I bricked mine when I first did it on my windows 7 64-bit machine (which I think is a known issue with win 7 ), I had no problems doing it on my ubuntu machine.
Fortunately when I bought mine from meteor the desires were unlocked so I didn't need to do the gold card step. Not sure whether they sell them unlocked now but I'm sure they are locked on vodafone, O2 and 3.

Pls, does anyone know how this can be put onto my phone... I just bought this Outright... and it appears to be waste of money atm..
to all that dont have market, just follow the debranding guide found here: http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=195467
be sure to download the proper files for your phone. in the OP's case, its the X10i Generic UK (R1FA016)

the reason why you bought your x10 that doesn't have MARKET PLACE its because Google don't have an agreement or licence to include with the package in your country due to so many reason!!!!
as i mention above the "application" is the only thing that you can enjoy your x10..

I think the equivalent of de-branding for X10 is like changing your region in Samsung Galaxy S (i.e. from XSS to XSG).
I bought SGS here Dubai and was disappointed that I only have SlideME but since I changed my phone region settings (there is a tutorial for this in the SGS-I900 dedicated forums here in XDA Developers), I have now the android market and now I am a download demon... So far no problems encountered... I have read about de-branding as I am trying to help a friend of mine get the Android Market for his X10...
Note: No need to root our SGS I900 to do this useful trick...

X10a Big Difference in 2.1 Global Generic kits-1234-4836 has**Voice Search 2.2**

There is a difference in the x10a Global Generic flashes being used on XDA. After updating to the newest x10i .24, I lost my favorite new feature of my 2.1 unbraned generic Brazil 1234-4836 x10a..**Voice Search system app by google** Voice Search is a must have, once I have used it. With Voice Search, instead of having a magnifying glass icon on my search bar on the home screen, I had a microphone. It also allowed voice search in other market apps like Yellow Pages. It searches your phone, apps, internet, etc, via voice rather than typing. It is surprisingly accurate.
After reflashing the new update .24 x10i a couple times with no success and searching the Market for the google voice search app, I realized that voice search is only available in Froyo 2.2 or in USA 2.1 factory software packages. I used the 2.1 Global Generic kits available here on xda, and flashed back to x10a. The Brazil 1234-4836 was not available, only 1234-4820. When I started up my phone the microphone icon was on the search bar for a couple seconds and then reverted back to the magnifying glass icon. I then realized that the Global package is global not USA, so I went looking for Brazil 1234-4836. I couldn't find the specific firmware. However, I did find out how to edit the default.prop and build.prop files with Root Explorer and change the brand from 1234-4820 to 1234-4836, and then use SEUS to repair the software from here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-828163.html
I followed the instructions on that link, edited the files, repaired with SEUS (it will say you have the latest software, but it will change it), started up my phone and Voice Search was back!!!! You will know it worked when the phone starts up, language will default to Portuguese(Brazil) rather than Espanol(Mexico) and it will say Proximo upper right corner.
So, there is a difference in the packages..If you speak English, this is a must have especially since there are no plans I have heard of to update 2.2. I don't know how well other languages are supported yet. Check google voice search on internet to find out more.
not quite sure which version do I have but trust me LAM has voice search and it came with predefined spanish (mexico)
Not saying it isn't available elsewhere, just saying the firmware provided on xda is 1234-4820, which does not have voice search. Nor does the x10i new update.

You can just download the voice search application from the Market, the problem with this is that the application isn't called voice search, the name depends on your language.. Go to 'my downloads' , search for Google Maps, then hit 'more application from this dev (or something similar)' and search for something like voice search, this will also give you the microphone on the 'search' widget and keyboard.

+1 from me
There is co-pilot which costs $5 US and one for UK and Europe. But they say 2.2, and only limited support for searching things like contacts. Voice Search does all and it is free, and plans for supporting more languages.
My point is still all generic global x10a kits are not the same. Unless SE gives us another upgrade to Froyo or Gingerbread, you won't have it.

I understand that the roms are not the same. However the app you are referring to (text to speech, search in different places etc, microphone on the keyboard, microphone on the search widget, microphone everywhere where there is a search option) is just downloadable from the market. Atleast is was for me (i'm using global generic firmware), so you'll have it, even if SE doesn't give us another upgrade...
Google Voice Search is NOT downloadable from the Market.
http://support.swiftkey.net/discussions/download-issue/632-google-voice-search-not-found-in-market
Try and download it from appbrain and it will tell you it is not available for your phone. It says it is for 2.2. I agree, you may still be able to download it, but Google Voice Search was not included on the Global x10a or x10i kits, because it is still only a USA or Froyo 2.2 app. Sure you all can find other ways to get the app or something similar, however you can do that with most any app and a few dollars. I prefer my OS to have all available options. That's why we are all on the edge of our seats for every update..
If you are an AT&T customer, like myself, and you came here for the 2.1 update because our lousy carrier wouldn't give it to us, then the 1234-4836 kit is the most similar to what we would have gotten. As a matter of fact with the 1234-4836 kit (build date Oct 23, 2010), there is an blank AT&T widget on the home screen, that is not present on the Generic Global flash offered here. I am sure when the 0.24 update is available for x10a 1234-4836 there will still be voice search. For the recent update for X10i it still is not an option.
The point of this thread still remains that there are differences in updates. Voice search is an upgrade in technology, which I am happy to have standard in my handpiece and thought others would enjoy. This is for the other AT&T-xda-unbranded 2.1 X10A users who were wondering which Generic is the best for their region, and maybe xda-developers would like to use the ROM with the most options.

Hey, agaentJBM,
If you do the service menu (H,B,B,H,B,H,H,B) and go to the software menu,
what are the SI codes presented?
I updated the prop et al, files with the new number since I don't feel like installing Voice again, but I never updated via SEUS.
So when I go to the service menu I see:
Phone software: 1227-4612
File System: 1226-2253
S1Boot: 1225-9698
ETS: 1234-4836 (What I chg'd)
Customization: 1239-1165
I'm curious if the 4 other SI numbers are different and if that would mean that SE could change SEUS to use a different number or combination of numbers to prevent updates.

Rogers Branded Arc Thread

Finally picked up the Rogers Branded Xperia Arc this morning. Unlocked it through the htccode.com folks.
In the box, there's the requisite charger and cable, HDMI cable and a set of headphones. It also includes a 16GB microSD card. BTW, the phone is running v181 of the software.
Overall, the phone is pretty unique. It feels quite light for its size and the curve in the back doesn't feel too weird. The screen looks quite sharp, but I haven't had a chance to play around with it that much! BTW, looks like the SE skin isn't too intrusive (unlike Motoblur) but I don't think it's as good as HTC Sense. BTW, there is the option to enable WiFi hotspot (a key requirement for me)!
I've attached some pics below.
Got it rooted with Gingerbreak! Installed the apk on the SD card, installed it and then ran Gingerbreak with no issues.
Anyone other Canadians with Arcs on this forum?
Got mine this morning as well! Was first one in the store when it opened Device is amazing!
Ya, the phone is great. So glad the root came out right before we got the phone. Lol.
Aside from being able to use the phone on other networks, what benefit does the unlock give?

I got rid of the bloatware using Titanium Backup. I would like to get rid of the Rogers boot logo, though.

If you're rooted, you can always use Titanium Backup to strip out some or all of the bloatware.
Not a perfect solution, obviously but it's better than nothing.
edit: I really need to start refreshing pages before using the quick-reply box...
Now that Rogers has released the LT15a, any word or info as to whether we can buy it online somewhere and have it shipped to the USA?

Yes, there are a few online sellers for the Arc. SN Traders Online (I'm not endorsing them) is selling it for close to US$800 - check out the howardforums marketplace for more online sellers.

You need to Flash a generic ROM to get rid of bootscreen.
I'm new to Andriod "Smartphone" as you can tell from how many post I have.
So, I bought out the phone.
There are things I need to remove "bloatwares" from Rogers and other apps.
So, rooting the phone gives you access to superuser and I see that apps can be removed.
Here are some of my replies with questions.

Yes, it was already inside the phone.
Anyone know if bestbuy or futureshop sell the protective screen for this phone..or any other store would? Not online order.
Didn't it come with one pre-applied?
@Step666 It did but it's one of those factory temporary plastic cover that has a tab. Our package is not the same with EU release extra contents.

germany: not yet...
just checked it!
What if you have a phone with unlocked bootloader: it won't update: OTA bricks the phone, PC companion gives an error.
So not for users with a unlocked phone eh?

relock your bootloader and do the update or wait for the ftf file for the flashtool
I'm on world generic and also no update yet
No update on AU Generic Xperia Arc either.
If this is any similar to the X10 2.3.3 update we will have to wait 2-3 days before they start being released for download.
I wonder if this is on Android V2.3.4, kinda doubt it though as it would say otherwise.
how about root status as well? will we lose them?
I have unlocked bootloader, how can I check?

I have and i haven't
It's not on EMMA yet for Nordic Generic...
Usually SE announces updates online a few days before they start appearing on the update servers... It's good to hear they're really working hard on the software though!
I really wonder what they mean with 'new themes' for the homescreen... Perhaps we get to replace the default blue in all the menus?
And stereo recording? How, the Arc and Neo only have one camera on the back?
And oh yeah, since this brings the features from the September lineup (Mini, Mini Pro and Ray) to our devices, I also expect we'll be seeing native CRT On/off animations!
This firmware might also be 2.3.4, but I'm not sure... It's coming soon in any case.
Maybe they can use both the mics ?
(Doesn't the camera use the mic for sound input?)
Stereo audio,have two microphone
